Country/Americana singer-songwriter Carlene Carter has just been announced as a headlining act on Transatlantic Sessions Tour 2024, taking place across the UK between February 2 and 11. The intercontinental lineup celebrates the rich music traditions connecting Scotland, Ireland and the US.
First conceived as series of live music television productions in 1995 for the BBC, Transatlantic Sessions has since expanded into a ticketed touring event all over the UK. This year’s nine date trek begins in Scotland on Feb 2 at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, before heading to Edinburgh and winding its way south through the English cities of Gateshead, Buxton, Bristol, Liverpool and Birmingham, culminating on Feb 11 at Royal Festival Hall in London. In addition to Carlene Carter, Transatlantic Sessions Tour 2024 will include progressive Irish folk singer-songwriter Joshua Burnside, Gaelic singer Kim Carnie, Canadian folk duo Allison de Groot & Tatiana Hargreaves, and a house band led by Aly Bain and Jerry Douglas. Transatlantic Sessions alumni from previous years include Alison Krauss, Béla Fleck, Emmylou Harris, Guy Clark, Iris Dement, James Taylor, Joan Osborne, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Rufus Wainwright.
Carlene Carter has been releasing music for more than four decades. The daughter of June Carter Cash and country star Carl Smith, and stepdaughter of Johnny Cash, she became a singer in The Carter Family at 17. With the release of her first several albums, she established herself on the edgier end of the country music spectrum, having recorded in England with Graham Parker’s band The Rumour and Nick Lowe’s Rockpile. Working with producer Howie Epstein (of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers), Carlene Carter became Nashville’s homecoming queen of 1990 when her rockin’ “I Fell In Love” topped the country singles and video charts, and the album was named one of the year’s 10 best by Time, People, and Stereo Review. Award nominations followed for the Academy of Country Music’s Top New Female Vocalist, and Best Country Vocal Performance, Female (for the I Fell In Love album) at the 1991 Grammy Awards. Her dynamic personality made her a natural as VH1’s first country video hostess with her own daily hour, The Carlene Carter Show, and she had another smash hit single and video with “Every Little Thing,” from Little Love Letters, in 1993. She has been releasing albums and touring steadily since and was prominently featured in Ken Burns’ Country Musicminiseries in 2019.
In advance of Carlene Carter’s departure to the UK, Paramount+ will premiere June on January 16. Directed by Emmy® Award-winner Kristen Vaurio, this feature-length documentary about country singer-songwriter June Carter Cash features rare and never-before-seen archival material that reveals the extraordinary life work of a monumental woman and her iconic entertainment career. Featuring interviews with the star herself, as well as family members, including daughter Carlene, as well as friends like Dolly Parton, Reese Witherspoon and Willie Nelson, June shines a spotlight on the history of country music and the mark the Carter and Cash families made on the genre.
