Global pop powerhouse Zara Larsson has officially released her highly anticipated new album, ‘Midnight Sun’, which is out now via Sommer House and Epic Records. The album was preceded by the bittersweet single “Crush,” a track that masterfully serves up dancing through the pain as our heroine details the exquisite torture of catching feelings for someone while already in a good relationship at home. Written by Larsson with Helena Gao and producers Margo XS, MNEK, and Zhone, the song evolves from soft tones and a shuffling beat into something driving and determined as Zara pushes back temptation and commits to a decision, singing: “Then it hits me like reality, I can’t lose him to a fantasy. It ain’t heartbreak, but it still hurts enough. Oh baby I’m crushed, it will never be us. That’s why they call it a crush, it will never be love.”
The full 10 track set of ‘Midnight Sun’ ripples with confidence as its storytelling bursts with truth and vulnerability, plumbing the depth and growth of the 27 year old’s artistry and journey over nearly twenty years in the public eye. This era kicked off with the confident and rowdy single “Pretty Ugly,” whose gloriously messy music video, directed by Charlotte Rutherford and choreographed by Zoi Tatopoulos, was nominated for an MTV Video Music Award for “Best Choreography.” The album’s transcendent title track, “Midnight Sun,” also became a viral hit all summer, earning cosigns from everybody from Renee Rapp and Kylie Jenner to Ariana Grande and Halle Berry. With the full album available out now, Zara is unafraid to show all sides of herself: lovestruck, wistful, ambitious, cocky, flippant, and uncertain, often in the very same breath.
