Brighton punk trio Self Torque strike hard with new single “High Temperature Serpent,” out now via Sugar-Free Records alongside a volatile new video. The track barrels forward on San Diego garage rock muscle, laced with old-school hardcore snap. It is relentless by design. No soft edges. No breather. Just pressure, distortion and bite.
“The idea behind this song was just to be heavy all the way through without any “nice” bits. A reflection of the subject matter. This is a character assassination of the worst person you know. You want everyone to know how much they suck because they are so good at playing everyone,” says vocalist and guitarist Gabriel MacKenzie. The message lands like a lit match in a dry room.
The single drives toward the band’s debut album, ‘A Brutal Nadir,’ out now via Brighton indie Sugar-Free Records. Recorded at Brighton Electric, the record was produced and mixed by Mark Roberts, with additional engineering by Alex Gordon. It opens with “Wicker Incident,” expands into the spaghetti western sway of “Del Shannon,” and includes lead cut “(All The Things I) Wannabe.”
Self Torque rose from the Brighton DIY circuit, forged by MacKenzie alongside Luke Ellis on drums and Jay Cross on bass. Their live shows lock tight and detonate fast. ‘A Brutal Nadir’ moves with grit, melody and nerve. It hits with force and refuses to blink.
