VAN HALEN Are Releasing Expanded Edition Of ‘For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge’

0

Van Halen’s ninth studio album, For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, debuted at #1 and stayed there for three weeks during the summer of 1991. It was the third consecutive #1 album from singer Sammy Hagar, guitarist Eddie Van Halen, drummer Alex Van Halen, and bassist Michael Anthony.

An Expanded Edition of the album is arriving this summer from Rhino, including a newly remastered version of the original, along with previously unreleased audio and video (INSERT HYPERLINK) footage from Van Halen’s December 4, 1991, concert in Dallas, Texas.

FOR UNLAWFUL CARNAL KNOWLEDGE (EXPANDED EDITION) will be available on July 12 and includes two LPs, two CDs, and a Blu-ray. You can order it here.

Fans who pre-order the collection from Rhino.com will have an exclusive bundle featuring the release and a set of four 7” singles, including “Poundcake” / “Pleasure Dome,” “Top Of The World” / “In ‘N’ Out,” “Right Now” (Organ Version) / “Man On A Mission,” and “Right Now” (Guitar Version) / “The Dream Is Over” (Instrumental Version).

Originally released in June 1991, For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge was an immediate success. It reached triple platinum certification and earned Van Halen its first Grammy® Award for Favorite Heavy Metal/Hard Rock Album. Producer and engineer Bernie Grundman expertly remastered and cut lacquers for this edition, ensuring pristine sound quality.

The Expanded Edition includes previously unreleased alternate versions of “Right Now” and “The Dream Is Over.” The main attraction, however, has to be the previously unreleased concert footage from Van Halen’s December 4, 1991, performance in Dallas. Captured during the “For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge Tour,” this electrifying show is a powerful example of Van Halen’s unparalleled stage presence.

The show’s setlist mixes new songs (“Judgement Day” and “Poundcake”) with songs from 5150 and OU812 (“Best Of Both Worlds” and “Finish What Ya Started”). The band also played “Panama,” a hit from its time with singer David Lee Roth, plus two of Hagar’s hits, “I Can’t Drive 55” and “There’s Only One Way To Rock.”

In addition, the Blu-ray includes the official music videos for “Poundcake,” “Runaround,” “Right Now,” and “Top Of The World.” Finally, the remastered album is included in the set as a double LP, featuring an etching of the Van Halen logo on the fourth side.

Tom Wilson to Receive Allan Slaight Humanitarian Spirit Award

0

Canadian Music Week is pleased to announce legendary musician Tom Wilson will receive the 2024 CMW Allan Slaight Humanitarian Spirit Award during a special presentation at the 23rd Anniversary Jim Beam INDIE Awards, on June 6, 2024 Danforth Music Hall in Toronto. Tickets are currently on sale and can purchased here.

The CMW Allan Slaight Humanitarian Award is presented annually to a Canadian artist, duo or group, in recognition of their social activism and benevolent support of humanitarian interests and causes.

The 2024 Jim Beam® INDIE Awards will feature a diverse array of Canadian artists, celebrating the spectrum of talent within the independent music scene across 19 categories. Hosted by Jamar McNeil of CHUM FM, the Jim Beam® INDIE Awards will include performances by: Tim Hicks, nominated for Country Artist/Group or Duo of the Year; Finger Eleven, nominated for Rock Artist/Group or Duo of the Year; the winner of the 2024 Jim Beam National Talent Search; and more to be announced soon.

Tom Wilson is a celebrated Canadian musician, famed storyteller and visual artist. The Tom Wilson Bursary was established in 2020 to support year one Indigenous students from Ontario secondary schools completing an undergraduate program in any faculty. It was established to help bring honour, love, respect and shine a light back on the culture Tom was introduced to later in life, and to honour the charitable nature that Bunny Wilson, who raised him, embodied throughout her life. This award is dedicated to empowering the next generation of indigenous people that will lead us into the future.

Wilson’s memoir Beautiful Scars, published by Penguin/Random House, has become a national bestseller. In his memoir, Wilson reveals the impact of discovering his Indigenous heritage. Shane Belcourt’s 2022 documentary film Beautiful Scars received a Canadian Screen Award nomination. The world premiere of the musical adaptation of Beautiful Scars was staged in Spring 2024 by Theatre Aquarius in Hamilton.

Musically, Wilson is best known for his work with Blackie & The Rodeo Kings and Lee Harvey Osmond, the latter receiving a 2020 Juno Award for the album “Mohawk”. In 2023, Wilson was appointed as a Companion of the Order of Canada.

In 1989 Wilson became the founder of the popular rock band Junkhouse. The band quickly grew in popularity and in 1993 signed a recording contract with Sony Music Canada. Lead by Wilson, Junkhouse skyrocketed in the 90s, producing three albums before disbanding. The style and success of Junkhouse has been an inspiration to many young Hamilton, Ontario artists. Wilson recorded his first solo album Planet Love (2001) for Sony Music.

It was also during this time that Wilson started dedicating more of his time and energy to his second passion, painting. His art show “Beautiful Scars: Mohawk Warriors, Hunters and Chiefs” premiered at the Art Gallery of Burlington and his work “The Mystic Highway” was commissioned by CARAS for a 30’ x 30’ reproduction legacy piece adorning John Street in Hamilton. The painting pays homage to the rich history of Hamilton musicians and performers from past.

In 1999, as a result of their shared love and admiration for one of Canada’s great musical treasures, the late Willie P. Bennett, Wilson along with Stephen Fearing and Colin Linden formed what would soon become the highly acclaimed roots music supergroup Blackie and the Rodeo Kings.

The Rodeo Kings have produced ten albums and have toured throughout North America and Europe. While Wilson created solo albums, Planet Love and Dog Years (2006), it was with his collaboration with producer and Cowboys Junkies founder Michael Timmins that he found and settled into a new voice. The result is Wilson’s genre defining, alter personae Lee Harvey Osmond. “Acid folk” was born in an old garage off Clinton Avenue in Toronto. With Timmins production and Wilson’s baritone, LHO has become the soundtrack and the voice for the art of Tom Wilson.

Each year, Slaight Communications and Canadian Music Week awards an outstanding Canadian artist, in recognition of their contribution to social activism and support of humanitarian causes. Previous CMW Allan Slaight Humanitarian Spirit Award recipients include Digging Roots, Abel “The Weeknd’ Tesfaye, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Gord Downie, Arcade Fire, RUSH, Sarah McLachlan, Chantal Kreviazuk & Raine Maida, Simple Plan, Bruce Cockburn, Bryan Adams and Nelly Furtado.

ABOUT ALLAN SLAIGHT: A pioneer of rock and roll, Allan parlayed his entrepreneurial flair with his knowledge of radio to create Canada’s largest privately owned multi-media company, Standard Broadcasting Corporation Limited. An inductee into the Broadcast Hall of Fame (1997), the recipient of an Honorary Doctor of Commerce from Ryerson Polytechnic University (2000), appointed a Member of the Order of Canada (2001), the recipient of the Walt Grealis Special Achievement Award (2005) for his contribution to the growth and development of the Canadian music industry, Allan has also maintained a lifelong interest in conjuring.

The Animals Release Early Catalog In Dolby Atmos For 60th Anniversary Of “House Of The Rising Sun”

0

On May 17, ABKCO Music & Records will release five albums by Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees The Animals in the Dolby Atmos audio format for the first time ever. These include the British rock band’s first four US full lengths The Animals (1964), The Animals on Tour (1965), Animal Tracks (1965) and Animalization (1966), as well as the 22-track career-spanning collection The Animals Retrospective, originally released in 2004. Every title will come out simultaneously on the streaming platforms Apple Music, TIDAL and Amazon Music. This will happen 60 years almost to the day of the recording of their intercontinental chart-topping single “House of the Rising Sun” on May 18, 1964.

Developed by Dolby Laboratories in 2012, Dolby Atmos® is a patented technology that is a leap forward from surround sound. It goes beyond the ordinary listening experience and puts you inside the song in a spatial way, revealing every detail of the music with unparalleled clarity and depth. Grammy-nominated recording engineer Kenta Yonesaka helped mix The Animals albums in Dolby Atmos® with the utmost attention to detail. Yonesaka has worked with a wide range of artists including The Rolling Stones, Buddy Guy, Mark Ronson, Mariah Carey, Pharrell Williams and Kendrick Lamar.

“The idea of hearing our earlier work in Atmos spatial audio, it’s like stepping into a whole new dimension for me,” said The Animals frontperson Eric Burdon. “It’s like rediscovering the magic all over again. I mean, we poured our hearts and souls into those recordings, and now to hear them brought to life in such an immersive way, it’s like a dream come true. The quality and depth of the playback experience, it’s everything.”

Formed in Newcastle by Eric Burdon from the ashes of the Alan Price Rhythm and Blues Combo, The Animals were known for their hard driving, R&B-influenced sound and became a hit-making machine on both sides of the Atlantic right out of the gate. Their self-titled 1964 album includes the #1 US and #1 UK charting “House of the Rising Sun,” and was made in an era when they were “the most important and successful British export after the Beatles,” as asserted by Rolling Stone’s David Fricke. Despite its title, their February 1965 follow-up The Animals on Tour contains studio recordings and features the Top 20 single “I’m Crying.” Animal Tracks was released just six months later, in the same calendar year. As was customary for American versions of British records, hit singles were packed into it—“Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” (originally recorded by Nina Simone the previous year), Sam Cooke’s “Bring It On Home to Me” and the Mann/Weil-penned “We Gotta Get Out of This Place,” the latter of which became a de facto anthem for U.S. Armed Forces G.I.s deployed to Vietnam. 1966’s Animalization, released during the band’s final year of existence, saw original producer Mickie Most replaced by Tom Wilson (Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, the Velvet Underground, The Mothers of Invention). There is no shortage of Top 40 material, from “Don’t Bring Me Down” (written for The Animals by Gerry Goffin and Carole King), Ma Rainey’s “See See Rider” and the Animals’ re-imagining of a prison work song originally recorded by American folklorist Alan Lomax, “Inside-Looking Out.”

Spanning the years 1964-1970, The Animals Retrospective contains all fourteen US Top 40 hits by The Animals and late ‘60s lineup Eric Burdon & The Animals, including “When I Was Young,” “San Franciscan Nights,” “Monterey” and “Sky Pilot.” The set is capped by the 1970 smash hit “Spill the Wine” by Eric Burdon & War.

My Next Read: “Don’t Tell Anybody the Secrets I Told You: A Memoir” By Lucinda Williams

0

Lucinda Williams’s rise to fame was anything but easy. Raised in a working-class family in the Deep South, she moved from town to town each time her father—a poet, a textbook salesman, a professor, a lover of parties—got a new job, totaling twelve different places by the time she was eighteen. Her mother suffered from severe mental illness and was in and out of hospitals. And when Williams was about a year old, she had to have an emergency tracheotomy—an inauspicious start for a singing career. But she was also born a fighter, and she would develop a voice that has captivated millions.

In Don’t Tell Anybody the Secrets I Told You, Williams takes readers through the events that shaped her music—from performing for family friends in her living room to singing at local high schools and colleges in Mexico City, to recording her first album with Folkway Records and headlining a sold-out show at Radio City Music Hall. She reveals the inspirations for her unforgettable lyrics, including the doomed love affairs with “poets on motorcycles” and the gothic southern landscapes of the many different towns of her youth, including Macon, Lake Charles, Baton Rouge, and New Orleans. Williams spent years working at health food stores and record stores during the day so she could play her music at night, and faced record companies who told her that her music was not “finished,” that it was “too country for rock and too rock for country.”  But her fighting spirit persevered, leading to a hard-won success that spans seventeen Grammy nominations and a legacy as one of the greatest and most influential songwriters of our time.

Raw, intimate, and honest, Don’t Tell Anybody the Secrets I Told You is an evocative reflection on an extraordinary woman’s life journey.

How Art Exhibitions Are Becoming the New Concert Venues

0

By Emily Mollown

Gone are the days when all the boundaries among the presences of different arts were submerged: the definition of an art gallery exhibition as a visual event is out the window. Again and again, galleries and museums are morphing into vibrant, multifaceted spaces that rival even the most buzzing concert venues. It marks a more significant flow into a culture of the sensorial and from a static relation to artwork into a dynamic, immersive event. This is how art exhibitions are making way for the new hubs for live music and performance, in the same line as the old famous concert venues we have known.

A New Stage for Entertainers

Traditionally, the reverent spaces of art exhibitions are places of hushed tones and contemplative silence. However, forward-thinking new artists and curators are breaking further away from these norms in integrating live performances that accompany and interact with the visual pieces. With this, art venues become a stage where musicians, dancers, and performers transform the space into a playground with the surrounding paintings and sculptures. For instance, performance art has resumed another burst, often bridging the gap between the static and kinetic, provoking audience participation in the same way that the vibe of a live concert would.

Interactive Spaces Redefine Engagement

Art venues are transforming into interactive environments where the audience becomes a crucial part of the art itself. These spaces invite visitors to engage directly with the installations, creating a unique experience that blurs the lines between observer and creator. Here’s how these interactive setups are redefining the engagement at art exhibitions:

  • Sensorial Participation: Installations equipped with motion sensors or touch-responsive surfaces allow visitors to alter the art through their actions. For instance, an artwork might evolve its colors and shapes as people move around it, making each visit uniquely tailored to the audience present at that moment.
  • Augmented Reality (AR) Experiences: By using AR technology, exhibitions offer a layer of digital enhancement that interacts with physical art. Viewers might point their smartphones at a painting to see hidden stories or animations unfold, adding a dynamic narrative layer to the static pieces.
  • Soundscapes: Some exhibitions integrate spatial sound installations, where the soundscape changes depending on where the viewer is standing. This auditory interaction complements the visual elements, creating a multisensory experience that immerses the visitor completely.
  • Collaborative Creations: Certain spaces encourage collective participation where visitors contribute to a developing artwork. This could involve adding a brushstroke to a large canvas or manipulating digital interfaces that project collaborative art onto large screens.

These interactive features not only enhance the depth of artistic engagement but also attract a broader, more diverse audience. They transform traditional gallery visits into dynamic, participatory events that resonate with the communal spirit of concerts, making each visit a new discovery through abstract paintings.

The Blend of Visual and Auditory

As the line of distinction between these various forms of art becomes less defined, so has now the sensorial experience of the multiple forms of art. Exhibitions for modern art would often incorporate an audio expertise; in this case, music that accompanies the visual experience. Curators are working closely with composers and musicians to create an original soundtrack that reflects both the visual nature of the art and the mood it creates. The marriage of two of the senses now allows an experience that almost rivals the sensory overload experienced in a concert.

Becoming More Human

Art exhibitions are ever more regarded in a way much like a cultural event; people gather for something other than the art itself to meet, interact, and celebrate. They are indeed getting to be community cultural staples, much like it is for a concert. As it now stands, openings at art galleries and museums are social events turned into happening crowds when as much for the community as for the art.

This is huge in an era when screens so heavily mediate social interactions, and it offers a real-world counterpart to digital socializing.

Marketing of the Experience

The marketing of art exhibitions has also borrowed a lot from concert marketing. With today’s vivid imagery and other eye-catching visual pieces, social media campaigns can be truly interactive, with popular influencers selling galleries as the space one should be seen at. All of these promotional strategies used by galleries are not merely a matter but tools for attracting a new base audience, indicating a changing perspective of the public about these cultural events.

Sustainability and Accessibility

Another reason the art show is that the new concert is sustainable and accessible. Art galleries are strategically positioned in urban centers, which makes them accessible to a wide audience without the need for long-distance travel. This proximity to urban dwellers not only increases foot traffic but also reduces the carbon footprint associated with traveling to more remote concert venues. Moreover, these spaces often repurpose existing buildings, blending cultural heritage with modern art forms while preserving architectural history.

This practice not only conserves resources but also enhances the aesthetic and historical value of the area. Additionally, many galleries are adopting green initiatives, such as using energy-efficient lighting and promoting zero-waste events, which further solidifies their role as environmentally conscious cultural hubs. These efforts make art exhibitions not just centers of cultural enrichment but also exemplars of sustainable practices in the arts community, offering both convenience and a reduced environmental impact.

Looking Forward

As we look to the future, the trend of art exhibitions evolving into spaces that rival concert venues is likely to continue. The fusion of art forms and the breaking down of barriers between them cater to a contemporary audience that seeks more from cultural experiences than passive consumption. This evolution is not just about providing entertainment but about creating a space where art in all its forms can be appreciated together, offering a richer, more engaging experience.

Art exhibitions, once quiet places meant for solitary reflection, are loudly declaring their presence as the new cultural arenas, echoing with the sounds of music, the movement of dance, and the vibrant chatter of an engaged audience. In doing so, they are not just redefining what an exhibition can be but are also reshaping the cultural landscape itself.

SiriusXM Signs New Exclusive Podcast Agreement with Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s Dirty Mo Media

0

Today, SiriusXM announced a new, exclusive podcast agreement with Dirty Mo Media, the multimedia content platform of NASCAR Hall-of-Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr. The deal brings both exclusive advertising and distribution rights to Dirty Mo’s impressive slate of programming to the SiriusXM Podcast Network, as well as unique opportunities for exclusive-to-SiriusXM crossover events between Dirty Mo and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. Earnhardt Jr.’s own podcast, “Dale Jr. Download,” will begin airing twice a week on the SiriusXM NASCAR Radio channel starting in early June. Additionally, the two companies will collaborate on several special event broadcasts throughout the year, including at the Daytona 500.

“This is a great day for our company,” said Earnhardt Jr. “This agreement allows us to continue producing the shows we want to produce and telling the stories we want to tell to an audience that values our brand of originality, passion and candor.

“This also brings my relationship with SiriusXM full circle. I first started hosting my own show nearly two decades ago on XM Satellite Radio. We did it for a couple years. Since then, nothing has changed other than I’m now a married father of two, I don’t race as much, XM is called SiriusXM, and I am bringing an entire media company back with me.”

Founded in 2013 by Earnhardt and executive producer Mike Davis, Dirty Mo Media emerged as perhaps the most influential platform in motorsports thanks in large part to Earnhardt’s rise to podcast prominence. In addition to building the podcast network, the company created and produced the TV/streaming series “Lost Speedways” in which Earnhardt visited and explored abandoned race tracks across America. Dirty Mo Media is now involved in the newly announced documentary series on Dale Earnhardt Sr. by Prime Video and Imagine Documentaries.

“One of our main areas of emphasis over the past year has been increasing our collaborations and expanding relationships,” said Davis. “A lot of that is simply knowing who we are, what we are trying to be and where we can be most affective. For Dirty Mo Media, we are a relatable, personality-driven brand of content creators and documentarians. Combine that with the reach, resources and credibility of SiriusXM, this relationship will produce fruit and serve our fans well.”

SiriusXM Media, the company’s advertising division, gains exclusive global ad sales rights to Dirty Mo Media’s slate of sports podcasts, including “Dale Jr. Download,” “Actions Detrimental with Denny Hamlin,” “Door Bumper Clear,” and more. These podcasts join the SiriusXM Podcast Network’s growing stable of sports programming, which, alongside SiriusXM’s incredible sports radio lineup, allows marketers to reach more passionate sports fans at scale. The SiriusXM Podcast Network reaches 1 in 2 podcast listeners in the US each month.

“We are very excited to team up with Dale Jr. and the team at Dirty Mo to bring several of the leading NASCAR podcasts into the SiriusXM Podcast Network,” said Sarah Van Mosel, SiriusXM’s SVP of Podcast Strategy.  “This not only bolsters the strength of our podcast offerings, but the addition of the ‘Dale Jr. Download’ to the SiriusXM NASCAR Radio channel enhances the programming available to our SiriusXM subscribers. This is another great example of the unique ways SiriusXM and talented creators like Dale and his team can work together.”

Dirty Mo Media joins the unparalleled lineup of podcasts and media companies represented exclusively by SiriusXM Media, including: “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” and the complete Team Coco roster; SmartLess Media and its hit show “SmartLess” from Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, and Sean Hayes; Ashley Flowers’ audiochuck and its chart-topping “Crime Junkie;” Crooked Media and its flagship “Pod Save America;” and many more; in addition to SiriusXM’s own award-winning shows such as “The Mel Robbins Podcast” and “How Did This Get Made?”

Podcasts play a central role in the new SiriusXM app, which features transcription, playback speed adjustment, key moment markers, auto downloads, and an expanded library, with more to come in future releases. With discovery at the heart of the listening experience, SiriusXM offers a new platform for Dirty Mo’s hosts to engage and connect with fans and listeners.
