Author M.D. DUNN Launches New Bruce Cockburn Book, ‘You Get Bigger As You Go: Bruce Cockburn’s Influence and Evolution’

0

Sault Ste. Marie native, musician and author M.D. Dunn is celebrating the release of his sixth book, You Get Bigger As You Go: Bruce Cockburn’s Influence and Evolution. You can get it on Amazon and Indigo now.

Bruce Cockburn has enthralled audiences with his insightful lyrics and innovative guitar playing for over half a century. Hit songs like “Wondering Where the Lions Are,” “If I Had a Rocket Launcher,” and “Lovers in a Dangerous Time” are just part of the story. In You Get Bigger as You Go: Bruce Cockburn’s Influence and Evolution, musician and writer M.D. Dunn takes the reader on a humorous and obsessive quest to track Cockburn’s significant cultural footprint. Interviews with producers, musicians, activists, fans, as well as Bruce’s career-long manager, the legendary Bernie Finkelstein, and with the enigmatic Cockburn himself form the core of this critical assessment and appreciation. In these conversations, Cockburn and friends celebrate a life of music and social engagement.

You Get Bigger as You Go: Bruce Cockburn’s Influence and Evolution is the perfect beginner’s guide to the music and the artist, and a fun addition to any fan’s library. Photographs from archivist Daniel Keebler span decades and show Cockburn in his natural habitat, on stage and in studio.

Author M.D. Dunn’s personal journey with Cockburn began when he was just fourteen and happened upon a cassette copy of Cockburn’s sixth album Joy Will Find a Way. Though the cassette contained few clues regarding its origin or creator, Dunn emphatically states that absorbing that album as a young guitarist “changed my life.”

“The mysterious, wise voice of the singer” he recalls, “landed like a message from the universe.”

Dunn first interviewed Cockburn for Canadian Dimension Magazine in 2014. “It seemed to have went well,” he recalls, “because further opportunities to interview Bruce for print followed.” By 2016 he had amassed a number of short pieces reflecting on the meaning and significance of Cockburn’s now legendary song catalog. This creative inspiration led Dunn to embark on a reconsideration of Cockburn’s holistic life and legacy, which was even more vast than he had previously known.

“The driving question behind this book is: how does music affect us?” says Dunn. “Music has the power to change people. What influence does music have in our daily lives? I applied these questions to Bruce Cockburn’s music and cultural presence to produce what I see as a beginner’s guide and critical appreciation.”

M.D. Dunn has performed original music for over thirty years and released nine albums. His poems and articles have been widely published. You Get Bigger as You Go: Bruce Cockburn’s Influence and Evolution is Dunn’s first book of nonfiction. Previous poetry titles include Ghost Music (BuschekBooks, 2010), Fancy Clapping (Scrivener Press, 2012), and Even the Weapons (BuschekBooks, 2014). He lives in Sault Ste. Marie, where he teaches writing at Sault College. Find him online at www.mddunn.com.

XOCÔ Unleashes ‘Maculelê’ Performance From Toronto’s Lula Lounge Concert

0

XOCÔ jumps onto the stage like a superhero with dance moves that will make your head spin, performing “Maculelê” live at the legendary Lula Lounge, taken from the recently released self-titled album (Lulaworld Records).

This song is named after the traditional percussion rhythm and warrior dance which is also the great grandmother of Brazilian Funk. The scene of fiery fusion is effortlessly captured by visionary videographer Elton Luz and his team who secure the explosive live XOCÔ energy at every turn as he liberates the audience to be themselves and let loose!

These movements of protection and revolution are customarily performed with machetes or sticks- tools from the sugarcane plantation fields and are especially sacred to and revered by Traditional Capoeira practitioners.

XOCÔ infuses his “Maculelê” version with lyrics celebrating imagery of the natural world and saluting Jurema and Orixá Oxóssi of Candomblé, the indigenous and Afro diasporic spiritual traditions respectively.

This live rendition from the XOCÔ album will leave you breathless, notably when the song refers to a “tidal wave” and offers an onstage powerhouse performance to match.

The roaring crowd screams from the dance floor “Mais Um! One More!” giving XOCÔ and his band a standing ovation while demanding their return to the stage!

By the end of last encore of the show an audience member rushes over and exclaims:

“That was the best Afro Brazilian concert I’ve ever seen in my life!”

XOCÔ is notorious for giving memorable live performances anywhere and at the drop of a hat but because Lula Lounge is his favourite stage in TKaronto, he made sure this never before seen live footage will never be forgotten!

XOCÔ, aka Traditional Capoeira Mestre Sérgio Xocolate is a spontaneous and dynamic movement based performer so often not facile to film but was captured with effortless ease and grace by visionary videographer Elton Luz and his team with special shout out to cinematographer Gui Morilha, who calmed the chaos with his steady cam close ups blending in seamlessly and almost becoming a member of the band with his filming fluidity.

Speaking of which, XOCÔ’s formidable live band is made up of Zeca Polina, a star in his own right, rocking out on electric guitar and vocals; world renowned percussionist Anita Graciano on drum kit, playing so hard she smashed through several sticks; while magnetic, buoyant and upbeat vocalist Giovanna Galuppo held it down on the electric bass; with multi instrumentalist Alfredo Alves’ percussion precision and laser sharp focus which didn’t allow him to crack a smile once until the final bow; then finally Suzanne Roberts Smith facilitating the flow of the evening with traditional percussion while keeping an eye out in the crowd for baby Julu being passed around from friend to friend.

When not donning traditional Caboclo de Lança regalia- one of the principal symbols of Pernambucana Culture (as the only known lineage holder and representative in North America), XOCÔ was adorned in a hand painted wardrobe by Afro Brazilian artist and designer Salamandra.

The concert was not only bold in colours and vibrant in tempos but also politically lively with XOCÔ using his platform to call urgent attention to social inequities in Brazil: from criminalizing and torturing poor, black and indigenous folx due to the corruption of the justice and prison systems, to saluting and invoking the Indigenous Nations of Brazil and honouring their territories as well as celebrating Indigeneity worldwide to finally screaming for us to wake up as the Amazon continues to burn!

Then at the end of the live rendition of “Capoeira Blues”- XOCÔ sings passionately acapella until his voice trembles while holding up his Berimbau instrument above his head in reverence and defiance explaining: “The Berimbau Saved my life!”

How fortunate that it did!

This live concert is not mere entertainment but an activist war cry, a cultural celebration and all in all one heck of a timeless piece of art.

Myk Gordon Unveils Soulful Americana Vibes With Latest Single ‘Brand New Love’ From New Born To Be Album

0

Vancouver singer-songwriter Myk Gordon has released his latest single “Brand New Love” in anticipation of his forthcoming album Born To Be.

The guitar and drums-driven track features an air of steady feel-good rhythms with complimenting harmonies. In true Americana style, Gordon’s earthy voice drifts in and out of solid guitar features, leaving listeners with a medley of genres, including the styles of blues, roots, and punk. “Brand New Love” talks of the trials of love and of brighter horizons. Gordon explores the idea of moving forward, dreaming of love, and the kind of love one can offer.

“I can give you healing love
The kindest touch
The beauty of…”

“Brand New Love” comes as the album’s second single after the recently released title track “Born To Be.” In the album’s first single Gordon questions:

“Aren’t we, aren’t we ever free?
Aren’t we, Aren’t we born to be?”

The single is accompanied by a well-thought-out music video that pays homage to Bob Dylan’s 1965 promotional film for “Subterranean Homesick Blues.” In his video, a range of different individuals are featured, aimed to represent the universal longing for freedom.

Between the song’s featured powerful guitar riffs, Gordon creates a fictional story and speaks to the struggles of surviving life’s obstacles and shares it through well-crafted lyrics and commanding vocals.

You can expect no less in his soon-to-be-released album. Gordon’s decades of songwriting experience shine through the tracks, and so too does his expert grasp on the Americana genre. Listeners can expect exceptional harmonies, a dynamic and lively sound, and featured members of Neko Case, New Pornographers, NRBQ, and Mavis Staples.

Gordon travelled to Portland to record the full-length album, Born To Be, and it comes as his second collaboration with multiple Grammy Award-winner Steve Berlin of Los Lobos.

The singer-songwriter’s comprehensive skill set is spread among other pursuits aside from his musical career. He is a psychotherapist, a 6th dan Aikido teacher, and an internationally recognized author and scholar. Still, nothing stops him from his pursuit of writing and performing great music. Unsurprisingly, the well-seasoned artist has set foot on concert stages across the globe and performs across festivals, and now his latest masterfully crafted body of musical work will soon be yours.

“Brand New Love” is out now and the entirety of Born To Be are both out now.

Rocker KYTLY Critiques The Artifice of Modern Dating with Arty “Modern Life”

0

In KYTLY’s “Modern Life,” relationships are plastic, feelings are synthetic, and fun is like doing whippets – euphoric, but fast fleeting. The rock-meets-lo fi artist’s new single – available now – is a scathing yet also somehow gentle critique of, well, modern life.

There’s an early-2000s ‘height of indie’ vibe to the song, conjuring bands like Chicks On Speed and the bedroom-made sensibilities of Le Tigre. But it’s also wholly current.

“Modern Life is a song of the times,” KYTLY points out. “Disposable relationships. Replaceable feelings. Sensationally driven. Dopamine-rushing lifestyles. It’s a self-effacing anthem for modern dating and the disingenuous process of becoming ‘fast friends.’”

There’s also the sense that this is universal, and it’s a phenomenon that can’t exactly be tied to one country or culture:

Here he goes again fast friends

He’s got a girl in Italy
He’s got a girl in Japan
She models on the runway
He plays drums in a rock band

Here he goes again fast friends

The song rolls along with a careening punk-rock lean, but its lo-fi recording aesthetic and sweet vocals imbue it with an element of avant-garde, and sadness and regret. Meaning, it hardly does anything to glamourize the “fast friends” mindset.

The road of life is full of twists and turns. It’s easy to get lost. Go off course. Find yourself somewhere unintended. But if your sense of direction is keen and you keep your eyes on the horizon, you’ll get back on track eventually.

That’s where KYTLY finds herself these days. More than a decade after debuting with the acclaimed but short-lived indie-rock outfit The Caraways – and following years of navigating the curves, hills and valleys of existence – the bewitching vocalist and multimedia talent returned in 2022 with her long-overdue (and tellingly named) album Detours and Exits. She’s continued to record, hence her latest single “Modern Life.”

Rock Prodigy Avalon Stone Transcends Youth in Raw and Emotional Sophomore Single ‘Harder’

0

Ever feel trapped in your thoughts, yearning for childhood innocence? On her stunning sophomore single, “Harder,” Kitchener, ON’s Avalon Stone sings with a world-weariness that belies her 20 years—and makes it land with a raw, emotional force that explains why she’s already a respected not-so-elder stateswoman of rock in Canada.

Avalon Stone’s hard grungy alt-rock ballad ‘Harder’ is a deep dive into the struggle against mental confines, intrusive thoughts and innocence lost.

Getting up in the morning, my mind doesn’t stray from the bed
Fear, it paralyzes and it occupies my head
Because once I’m awake, there’s no excuses left

It’s getting harder than it used to be, Stone laments. Days getting longer, all I do is sleep.

The rhythm section of drummer Wes Bartram and bassist Donovan McKinley marches inexorably forward in half-time while Caleb Bourgeois’ melancholy guitar chords reverberate through a vintage Echoplex, laying the foundation for Stone to really go in for the kill:

So don’t you tell me that some things are easy to change
Cause I don’t see no other way
It’s getting harder than it used to be
Than it used to be

A clever, clear-eyed reversal of the “It gets better” trope? Not every performer has the moxie to pull that off. Stone, though, is no ordinary 20-year-old. Lighting up audiences since she was 11, she’s played more than 300 stages in Ontario and the U.S., from bar gigs to festivals drawing audiences of 15,000 and up. Having led her own classic rock band for nearly a decade, she emerged as a solo artist with the arrival of her 2023 single, the polished and defiant “Forget You” to international acclaim.

The slower yet even more arresting “Harder” (written with collaborator Joe Jacobs and produced by Juno Award-winning Kevin Dietz) shows us a different side of the artist, perfect for those darker winter months. Avalon shares, “I always knew ‘Harder’ would be the January release. It’s a time when many struggle with depression, and I wanted this song to be a companion during those tough moments.”

Filled with raw emotion, nostalgia, and a killer guitar solo, “Harder” may be achingly mournful, but it never feels like a dirge, thanks to the way her voice grabs every single note by the scruff of the neck and shakes it until the stuffing comes out.

Stone delves into the emotional complexity of mental health struggles, capturing that feeling of being trapped in your own thoughts. The song mirrors Avalon’s personal experiences and offers a raw, unfiltered exploration of depression and innocence lost. “Every one of us has experiences that teach us hard lessons” contemplates Stone, “and a lot of the time we get stronger because of them, but sometimes they really knock you down and you feel like you can’t get up again.”

When it comes to life beyond the footlights, Stone has already been around the block enough times to be a sage source of guidance. Between family tragedy and getting into the music industry at a young age, she has had more than her share of hard lessons. What counts is that she also knows how to leverage it, both for herself and for everyone else. “Harder” is sobering in its disillusionment, but it isn’t cynical or fatalistic. Instead, the ending is open to interpretation and adds depth to the song, offering a realistic portrayal of mental health battles. “It’s about being real and not sugarcoating the struggles. Sometimes you’re not okay right away. Sometimes the intrusive thoughts are winning, and you don’t have the energy to fight them. Sometimes you find it in you to break through and carry on.” says Avalon, reflecting on the song’s impactful message. “I’m not here to tell my fans how to feel, I’m here to tell them it’s okay they don’t know yet.”

With its grungy sound, heavy blues undertones, and a soul-stirring guitar solo, “Harder” showcases a perfect blend of Avalon’s musical roots and her contemporary alt-rock edge. The song’s narrative is further brought to life in its poignant cover art by Lucky Seven Photography, featuring Avalon trapped behind a symbolic clear plastic barrier – a striking metaphor for mental confinement.
So, the song might be called “Harder” but it will help you feel less alone on a cold, dark winter night.

A prelude to Avalon’s highly anticipated album “Chained,” set for regular releases throughout 2024, promising a blend of nostalgia and innovation, weaving raw emotions into alt-rock anthems.
