Rocker KYTLY Critiques The Artifice of Modern Dating with Arty “Modern Life”

0

In KYTLY’s “Modern Life,” relationships are plastic, feelings are synthetic, and fun is like doing whippets – euphoric, but fast fleeting. The rock-meets-lo fi artist’s new single – available now – is a scathing yet also somehow gentle critique of, well, modern life.

There’s an early-2000s ‘height of indie’ vibe to the song, conjuring bands like Chicks On Speed and the bedroom-made sensibilities of Le Tigre. But it’s also wholly current.

“Modern Life is a song of the times,” KYTLY points out. “Disposable relationships. Replaceable feelings. Sensationally driven. Dopamine-rushing lifestyles. It’s a self-effacing anthem for modern dating and the disingenuous process of becoming ‘fast friends.’”

There’s also the sense that this is universal, and it’s a phenomenon that can’t exactly be tied to one country or culture:

Here he goes again fast friends

He’s got a girl in Italy
He’s got a girl in Japan
She models on the runway
He plays drums in a rock band

Here he goes again fast friends

The song rolls along with a careening punk-rock lean, but its lo-fi recording aesthetic and sweet vocals imbue it with an element of avant-garde, and sadness and regret. Meaning, it hardly does anything to glamourize the “fast friends” mindset.

The road of life is full of twists and turns. It’s easy to get lost. Go off course. Find yourself somewhere unintended. But if your sense of direction is keen and you keep your eyes on the horizon, you’ll get back on track eventually.

That’s where KYTLY finds herself these days. More than a decade after debuting with the acclaimed but short-lived indie-rock outfit The Caraways – and following years of navigating the curves, hills and valleys of existence – the bewitching vocalist and multimedia talent returned in 2022 with her long-overdue (and tellingly named) album Detours and Exits. She’s continued to record, hence her latest single “Modern Life.”

Rock Prodigy Avalon Stone Transcends Youth in Raw and Emotional Sophomore Single ‘Harder’

0

Ever feel trapped in your thoughts, yearning for childhood innocence? On her stunning sophomore single, “Harder,” Kitchener, ON’s Avalon Stone sings with a world-weariness that belies her 20 years—and makes it land with a raw, emotional force that explains why she’s already a respected not-so-elder stateswoman of rock in Canada.

Avalon Stone’s hard grungy alt-rock ballad ‘Harder’ is a deep dive into the struggle against mental confines, intrusive thoughts and innocence lost.

Getting up in the morning, my mind doesn’t stray from the bed
Fear, it paralyzes and it occupies my head
Because once I’m awake, there’s no excuses left

It’s getting harder than it used to be, Stone laments. Days getting longer, all I do is sleep.

The rhythm section of drummer Wes Bartram and bassist Donovan McKinley marches inexorably forward in half-time while Caleb Bourgeois’ melancholy guitar chords reverberate through a vintage Echoplex, laying the foundation for Stone to really go in for the kill:

So don’t you tell me that some things are easy to change
Cause I don’t see no other way
It’s getting harder than it used to be
Than it used to be

A clever, clear-eyed reversal of the “It gets better” trope? Not every performer has the moxie to pull that off. Stone, though, is no ordinary 20-year-old. Lighting up audiences since she was 11, she’s played more than 300 stages in Ontario and the U.S., from bar gigs to festivals drawing audiences of 15,000 and up. Having led her own classic rock band for nearly a decade, she emerged as a solo artist with the arrival of her 2023 single, the polished and defiant “Forget You” to international acclaim.

The slower yet even more arresting “Harder” (written with collaborator Joe Jacobs and produced by Juno Award-winning Kevin Dietz) shows us a different side of the artist, perfect for those darker winter months. Avalon shares, “I always knew ‘Harder’ would be the January release. It’s a time when many struggle with depression, and I wanted this song to be a companion during those tough moments.”

Filled with raw emotion, nostalgia, and a killer guitar solo, “Harder” may be achingly mournful, but it never feels like a dirge, thanks to the way her voice grabs every single note by the scruff of the neck and shakes it until the stuffing comes out.

Stone delves into the emotional complexity of mental health struggles, capturing that feeling of being trapped in your own thoughts. The song mirrors Avalon’s personal experiences and offers a raw, unfiltered exploration of depression and innocence lost. “Every one of us has experiences that teach us hard lessons” contemplates Stone, “and a lot of the time we get stronger because of them, but sometimes they really knock you down and you feel like you can’t get up again.”

When it comes to life beyond the footlights, Stone has already been around the block enough times to be a sage source of guidance. Between family tragedy and getting into the music industry at a young age, she has had more than her share of hard lessons. What counts is that she also knows how to leverage it, both for herself and for everyone else. “Harder” is sobering in its disillusionment, but it isn’t cynical or fatalistic. Instead, the ending is open to interpretation and adds depth to the song, offering a realistic portrayal of mental health battles. “It’s about being real and not sugarcoating the struggles. Sometimes you’re not okay right away. Sometimes the intrusive thoughts are winning, and you don’t have the energy to fight them. Sometimes you find it in you to break through and carry on.” says Avalon, reflecting on the song’s impactful message. “I’m not here to tell my fans how to feel, I’m here to tell them it’s okay they don’t know yet.”

With its grungy sound, heavy blues undertones, and a soul-stirring guitar solo, “Harder” showcases a perfect blend of Avalon’s musical roots and her contemporary alt-rock edge. The song’s narrative is further brought to life in its poignant cover art by Lucky Seven Photography, featuring Avalon trapped behind a symbolic clear plastic barrier – a striking metaphor for mental confinement.
So, the song might be called “Harder” but it will help you feel less alone on a cold, dark winter night.

A prelude to Avalon’s highly anticipated album “Chained,” set for regular releases throughout 2024, promising a blend of nostalgia and innovation, weaving raw emotions into alt-rock anthems.

Deep Purple To Release Super Deluxe Edition of Machine Head

0

Deep Purple unleashed one of the best guitar riffs since the invention of rock and roll with “Smoke On The Water,” a song dubbed the Beethoven’s 5th of hard rock. Since its 1972 debut on Machine Head, the song and the album have left an indelible mark on music, inspiring countless bands around the world.

Warner Records and Rhino honor the album’s enormous legacy with a comprehensive version introducing new mixes and previously unreleased live recordings. MACHINE HEAD: SUPER DELUXE EDITION will be available on March 29 as a 3-CD/LP/Blu-ray.

Highlighting the collection are several different versions of the album, including new stereo and Dolby Atmos mixes by Dweezil Zappa. The 1974 quadraphonic mix and a newly remastered version of the original album are also featured, adding depth to the extraordinary set. Zappa’s newly remixed stereo version of “Smoke On The Water” is available today digitally. Listen HERE.

The Super Deluxe Edition also contains two captivating live performances. The first, recorded on March 9, 1972, at the Paris Theatre in London, captures the group’s unrivaled stage presence during the “Machine Head Tour.” The second, previously unreleased, was recorded in April 1971 at the Montreux Casino in Switzerland. The band planned to record Machine Head there that December, but the venue burned down right before the sessions began, an event immortalized in “Smoke On The Water.”

In the aftermath, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, keyboardist Jon Lord, singer Ian Gillan, bassist Roger Glover, and drummer Ian Paice relocated to the nearby Grand Hotel (empty for the winter season) to record the album. Despite the chaos, the band managed to create its most successful album ever, topping the U.K. album chart and cracking the Top 10 in the U.S., earning a double platinum certification in 1986.

The previously unreleased Montreux concert promises to be a highlight for fans. The audience recording covers songs the band recorded prior to Machine Head, including “Child In Time” (from 1969’s Concerto for Group and Orchestra), “Speed King” (from 1970’s Deep Purple in Rock), and “Strange Kind Of Woman” (from 1971’s Fireball ).

The new Dolb Atmos and 2024 mixes provide fresh and immersive perspectives on this classic album and were made by Zappa using the original tapes. In the liner notes, Zappa says: “It’s one of thoserecords where I think, ‘How did they come up with this?’ It’s got classical influences in the guitar and the keyboard, but then it’s got the blues and there’s little bits of funkiness And you have this singer who has the most killer voice. All these things come together in a way where it doesn’t sound like commercial music, yet people got really excited about it. It’s a fascinating recipe.”

My Next Read: “Dear Catherine Wheel: Bonkers Letters To U.K. Indie Artists With Genuine Replies” By Derek and Dave Philpott

0

For close to a decade and a half the Philpotts have been getting under the skin of musical artistes. Picking up on glaring errors in their lyrics or sometimes getting completely the wrong end of the stick (perhaps to irritate things a little further) they totally misunderstand the meaning of ‘poetic license’.

Hundreds of missives have landed on the real and virtual doormats of musicians, worldwide. In return, these lyrical legends have exercised their right to reply, correcting and sometimes confirming the authors’ summation of what went wrong… or right.

In this book, enquiries were aimed directly at U.K. Indie bands.. These included Adorable, The Bevis Frond, Bis, Catherine Wheel, Crazyhead, Cud, David Devant and this Spirit Wife, Flowered Up, Fuzzbox, Goodbye Mr. Mackenzie, The June Brides, Ned’s Atomic Dustbin, New Fast Automatics Daffodils, The Nightingales, The Orchids, Paris Angels, Pele, Salad, Senseless Things, The Soup Dragons, Spacemen 3, Swervedriver, Talulah Gosh, That Petrol Emotion, 3 Colours Red, Thousand Yard Stare, The Telescopes and The Woodentops

‘Dear Catherine Wheel” is the result.

From Will Arnett, Crave Announces New Original Adult Animated Comedy Series, SUPER TEAM CANADA

0

Crave announced today a 10-episode order for the new, half-hour adult animated comedy, SUPER TEAM CANADA, its first commission of an animated series. The Crave Original series is produced in partnership with Thunderbird Entertainment’s Atomic Cartoons (Max’s YOUNG LOVE), and Will Arnett’s Electric Avenue (SNAKE OIL, TWISTED METAL), and is currently in production with a premiere set for 2025.

Created by Canadian Emmy®-winning writers, and brothers, Robert Cohen (HBO’s SOMEBODY, SOMEWHERE, THE BIG BANG THEORY) and Joel H. Cohen (THE SIMPSONS), the animated comedy focuses on the exploits of six, little-known Canadian superheroes trying to save the world from evil giant robots, an unemployed octopus, and needy hardware store clerks. The stakes are high for these stereotypically underdog Canadian super-unknowns, who are called in as Earth’s last resort when all the other superheroes have been destroyed.

Today, The Tragically Hip are proud to be announced as the Record Store Day Canada 2024 Canadian Ambassadors, releasing an exclusive standalone live album, Live at CBGB’s, on Record Store Day. The global celebration of the culture of independent record stores takes place this year on April 20, 2024, as it has annually for the last 17 years. This announcement marks the first of many moments this year for The Tragically Hip as they celebrate 40 years as a band.

Live At CBGB’s features nine live songs that were originally recorded on January 14, 1993, from the legendary New York venue CBGB’s as The Tragically Hip launched their third studio album, Fully Completely, in America with a private event from the intimate space. The band performed the record in full, omitting a few tracks that didn’t fit the bill. This concert recording will be available on April 20 for the first time as a 12” pink vinyl with a limited run of pink cassettes at participating record stores in Canada and the US.
