Beyoncé, Pink, Meg White, Joan Jett, Suzanne Vega To Be Featured In The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame’s Newest Exhibit: “Revolutiary Women In Music: Left Of Center”

0

From Beyonce to Joan Jett, and Siouxsie Sioux to Queen Latifah, the matriarchs of music are set to take center stage at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s newest exhibit “Revolutionary Women In Music: Left of Center,” set to open to the public on March 8th, 2024.

Spanning multiple genres, decades and generations, these musicians have challenged traditional gender roles; created inclusive, supportive communities that are respectful of women’s diverse experiences, identities, knowledge, and strengths; and empowered women to realize and embrace their authentic selves. The work of these women continues to not only tear down boundaries in the music industry but to shed light on social injustice throughout the world.

The exhibit, curated by the Hall’s VP of Curatorial Operations, Shelby Morrison, along with the Director of Curatorial Affairs, Amanda Pecsenye; which will be the first of its kind at the museum, will feature artifacts from the Rock Hall’s vault and never-before-seen items from the artists’ private collections including the entirety of Natalie Merchant’s “Ophelia” video costumes; Christina Aguilera’s tour wardrobe from her “Stripped” world tour’s “Beautiful” performance; along with pieces from Liz Phair, Queen Latifah, Anni Defranco, Sleater-Kinney, and many more.

“As the saying goes, well-behaved women rarely make history – and revolutionary women have often used music and lyrics to take action, convey truth, and call for change,” said Morrison. “For generations, women have fought against socially constructed gender norms to obtain equal social, political, and economic freedoms, and this exhibit, which has been decades in the making, will tell this story in a way that has never been done before.”

“Revolutionary Women In Music: Left of Center,” will fully open to the public on March 8th, 2024, with a Rock Hall Night’s special event dedication taking place the night before on March 7th, from 6pm – 10pm that will feature live performances from some of the women featured in the exhibit including Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductees, and other special guests such as Lisa Loeb and Shirley Manson of Garbage; along with trivia, a DJ and much more. You can find more information about this event at: https://www.rockhall.com/events/Revolutionary-Women-in-Music-rock-hall-nights

My Next Read: “Life’s Too Short” By Darius Rucker

0

Raised by a single mother in Charleston, South Carolina, Darius Rucker founded Hootie & the Blowfish with three classmates at the University of South Carolina in 1986. What began as a party band playing frat houses and dive bars quickly became a global rock pop phenomenon through their Diamond-certified debut album Cracked Rear View, featuring the era-defining hit songs “Only Wanna Be With You,” “Let Her Cry,” and “Hold My Hand.” Later, Darius would also chart a pioneering path as a solo Country music artist, with the Diamond-certified hit “Wagon Wheel,” plus timeless anthems such as “Alright” and “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It,” while sharing the stage and a mic with the likes of David Crosby, Al Green, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Adele, Taylor Swift, and more.

Nearly 40 years into his illustrious career, Darius tells the story of his life through the music that made him, including songs by everyone from Frank Sinatra and Stevie Wonder to R.E.M., KISS, Prince and, of course, his own music with Hootie and as a solo artist. He recounts the unlikely ascent of his band and wild tales of his road-hardened life—one filled with stumbles, missteps and battles with demons, but ultimately resulting in triumph. LIFE’S TOO SHORT is the story of a man, his music and his life; a page-turning memoir that is raw, real, hilarious and deeply emotional.

Positive energy will flow from a lineup that’s indicative of a diverse cultural mosaic, connecting listeners of all ages through the unifying power of music.

Let’s check out that overflowing buffet of skills:

JESSE ROYAL is a Grammy-nominated, internationally acclaimed singer/songwriter/performer/recording artist from Kingston, Jamaica. Renowned for his numerous 21st-century reggae anthems—including “Modern Day Judas,” which rails against bad-minded people, and 2015’s “Finally,” which was written in recognition of the long overdue decriminalization of marijuana in Jamaica—this Rastafarian chart star is one of the island’s most charismatic young talents. His debut album, 2017’s Lily of Da Valley, hit #1 on the U.S. Billboard Reggae Album Chart, and his eagerly awaited follow-up LP, Royal, dropped June 11, 2021. (Both albums were released by Easy Star Records.)

Through vivid storytelling rooted in the belief of a universal truth, his music carries a message of hope, strength, love and consciousness. Over the course of his career, he’s been blessed to collaborate and create with some of the world’s most respected artists, musicians and producers, including Sean Paul, Vybz Kartel, Stonebwoy, Protoje, Chronixx, Noise Cans, Steve Aoki, Damian Marley, Major Lazer and many others.

Not just a musician, Jesse Royal is also a father, a community activist, a thought leader and a global citizen guided by his spirituality and sense of righteousness.

THE HUMAN RIGHTS have become one of Canada’s most beloved and respected independent reggae bands since coming together in 2007 around one of the true lions of the Toronto reggae scene, Friendlyness (Big Sugar, Culture Shock, Truth And Rights). In 2014, Tréson joined the band to create a uniquely powerful two-man vocal frontline that delivers roots reggae, soul, R&B and dancehall vibes—all backed by the propulsive rhythm section of Tyler Wagler (bass) and Eric Woolston (drums), plus Canadian reggae legend Dave Jackson on keys, two blazing guitarists and the Declaration of Human Rights horn section.

The band has played over 200 club and festival shows across Canada, and recently toured the United States for the first time to a fantastic response. They’ve released three full-length albums, with a fourth on the way in late 2024. The Human Rights have performed at major Toronto venues like Roy Thomson Hall, the Sound Academy and Harbourfront Centre, as well as major events across Canada, including the Calgary Reggae Festival.

Their songs have become staples on reggae radio shows everywhere, and on CBC Radio programs like Big City, Small World. Fans of the Trailer Park Boys will know them for their version of the Boys’ theme song that’s featured in the movie Don’t Legalize It.

Canadian R&B-fusion/dancehall artist OMEGA MIGHTY has an eclectic sound, switching between Jamaican patois, sultry vocals and an energetic rapflow with confidence. Her 2021 EP, Me & Youforia, put her on the map with its winning exploration of genres like R&R, dancehall, Afrobeat and pop.

Born to a Jamaican father and British-Bajan mother, Omega cherishes playing records at home as one of her earliest memories. She started in music early, training in classical piano at the age of 4, then added singing at 6 and dance at 9. Growing up in Toronto, known as the most diverse city in Canada, Omega was exposed to a rich and varied culture that’s helped shape her sound. She’s since been seen gracing the stages of various festivals, including the RBC Canadian Open, Canada Day Vancouver, Riverfest and AfrowaveTO, opening for acts like Flo Rida, Fefe Dobson and the legendary band the Wailers.

Inspired by ’90s R&B and new age music alike, Omega draws influence from artists like Rihanna, Wstrn, Doja Cat, Missy Elliott, Brandy, Stefflondon and Vybz Kartel. She’s proud to wear multiple hats, acting as singer/songwriter, producer and creative director for her energetic live performances, which spotlight her smooth vocals, vibrant movement and militant aura.

KAIRO MCLEAN says he was born to play music. Obviously, it’s something he’s always gravitated to: He started playing drums at age 3 and guitar at 6. And in 2022, at the ripe age of 15, he became the youngest person to ever receive a Juno Award, for his EP Easy Now.

A true connoisseur of all aspects of reggae, rock-steady and sound-system culture, he takes his cues from greats like Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, Sugar Minott and Peter Tosh. All this and more makes Kairo a phenomenon to keep an eye on as his star continues to rise in the Canadian music scene.

Referred to by many as “the future,” JOSHUA LUCAS has been striving to preserve authentic Jamaican and Caribbean culture through music and DJing. Since he started on his path at the tender age of 9, his position as one of Canada’s most talented DJs has continued to be reinforced as he delights crowds at clubs, parties and festivals alike. He’s blazed a trail in Toronto music and entertainment, taking on a role as a cultural preserver of authentic music and culture via his DJing, live performance, event promotion and music production.

With his family’s record collection as inspiration, Joshua had decided by age 3 that music was his favourite thing. By the time he turned 9, he had begun DJing and playing drums and piano. In the years that followed, he continued to refine his skills; he even created his own production company, Avalanche Productions A/V, in 2012.

His sound selections, versatility, mixing skills and knowledge of the music began getting attention from a growing fan base around Toronto and attracted some of the industry’s heavy hitters, like Jones and Jones Productions. That led to Joshua’s first appearance at the JAMBANA One World Festival at the age of 15. Famous Jamaican actor and comedian Oliver Samuels was so impressed by the performance that he heaped accolades on the young selector.

Joshua Lucas has shared stages with many international artists and deejays, including Shabba Ranks, Yellow Man and Marcia Griffiths, Metro MediaSound, Stone Love and Dr Jay De Soca King. His career has not been limited to the reggae community, as he has spread his talent to the soca scene through Jamal Magloire’s Toronto Revellers Mass Band. He plays at corporate events for companies like Bell Canada, Revera Living and CIBC, and he’s regularly booked for weddings, private events and school events for a variety of school boards.

Joshua continues to preserve and promote reggae culture through his events “Skanking Sweet The Spirit of Reggae Music,” the throwback party “Carnival Inception” and “416 & Park.” Joshua has lately expanded his endeavours to live streaming through the Twitch platform, and to sound clash culture through the newly organized National Soundclash League.

MC BONDÉ is a Zimbabwean-born actor and a multi-award-winning emcee/host who has been in the entertainment business since 1995, DJ’ing/MC’ing events, parties, concerts and weddings in North America, Europe and Africa. He has been an MC/host at over 250 weddings and over 3,500 events/concerts worldwide.

He made his acting debut in the Nollywood feature film Clash (#ClashTheMovie), which was released by Diamond Pictures Inc. Canada and streamed on Netflix from May 8, 2021. (The movie features “first lady of Nollywood” Omoni Oboli and actor Pascal Atuma, who also directed.)

MC Bondé was a radio host on CHRY 105.5FM (now VIBE 105.5FM) and G98.7FM (which later became Flow 98.7FM Toronto). One of the shows he hosted on G98.7FM and Flow 98.7FM, The African Groove Show, represented a first for the community: a program on commercial radio dedicated to African music and entertainment. The show won multiple awards in the 11 years it was on air.

MC Bondé is a freelance voiceover and the host of Interactive Buzz on Feva TV (www.fevatv.com), a show in which he interviews entertainers from all over Africa.

Presented by Brampton on Stage and The Jones & Jones Group, and graciously sponsored by TD, this edition of Flavours & Vibes will begin with a preshow mix-n-mingle at 7 p.m., followed by the show at 8. The Polygon Gallery Presents The Landmark Exhibition ‘Velvet Terrorism: Pussy Riot’s Russia’

0

The Polygon Gallery is pleased to present Velvet Terrorism: Pussy Riot’s Russia, a survey exhibition of the feminist art collective, from March 22–June 2, 2024. Drawing from more than a decade of activism, the show features documentation of Pussy Riot’s actions as assembled by member Maria Alyokhina.

“This exhibition highlights Pussy Riot’s courageous spirit and tenacious advocacy of human rights, while offering a graphic narrative about Russia’s recent history,” says Reid Shier, director of The Polygon Gallery. “Pussy Riot’s international impact has been growing since they performed in Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in 2012, and the survey demonstrates the urgent relevance of their activism, particularly as they raise awareness about the war in Ukraine — which has now been waged for close to two years.”

Pussy Riot is a protest and performance art collective that produces provocative and politically engaged performances, music, and videos. Formed in Moscow in 2011, the group has become an iconic symbol of opposition against Vladimir Putin’s Russia. The collective has received the LennonOno Grant for Peace in 2012, the Hannah Arendt Prize for Political Thought in 2014, and, most recently, the Woody Guthrie Award in 2023, which recognizes the spirit of resistance through music, literature, dance, or other forms of art.

Through videos, photographs, testimonies, song lyrics, and reflections, the exhibition offers a rich account of Pussy Riot’s non-violent actions as well as the reactions of the Russian authorities. Through their work over the years, Pussy Riot has transformed the repressive apparatus of an authoritarian state into a creative partner, boldly playing with fire.

In addition to the exhibition, Pussy Riot will stage a performance of RIOT DAYS in Vancouver on March 22 at The Pearl. The concert, based on Alyokhina’s memoir of the same name, combines music, theatre, and political action. The award-winning show has been performed more than 200 times worldwide.

Velvet Terrorism: Pussy Riot’s Russia was originally presented at Kling & Bang (Reykjavik). Created by Maria Alyokhina and curated with Ragnar Kjartansson and Ingibjörg Sigurjónsdóttir, the exhibition has been shown at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Denmark and the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe’s “Live In France: The 1966 Concert In Limoges” Set For Record Store Day Release

0

Sister Rosetta Tharpe was a pivotal figure in American 20th century music, though until recently her legend had languished in semi-obscurity. The pioneering gospel/blues singer, extraordinarily gifted electric guitarist and proto rock ‘n’ roll star has been rediscovered of late with a well-deserved induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018 with Alabama Shakes’ Brittany Howard doing the honors. Thereafter, her influence at the dawn of the rock era on none other than Elvis Presley was acknowledged with a searing portrayal by Yola in Baz Luhrmann’s 2022 Elvis feature film. All of that posthumous notoriety has earned her the title “The Godmother of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” with her undeniable influence acknowledged by rock cognoscenti everywhere.

This coming Record Store Day, April 20, will see the release of a limited edition 2-LP set (also available on CD and digital download on April 26) titled Live in France: The 1966 Concert in Limoges, a 21-track album of newly discovered and previously unreleased performances recorded on November 11, 1966, at the Grand Theater in Limoges, the city in west-central France best known for porcelain production.

Having been accepted and celebrated by audiences in France and throughout Europe, she toured the continent relentlessly in the ‘60s. Her 1966 performance in Limoges was in fact her third concert there over the years. It was captured on tape that night by the Office de Radiodiffusion-Télévision Française (ORTF) and discovered seven years ago by Zev Feldman, the archivist Stereophile dubbed “The Indiana Jones of Jazz,” and who was recently profiled in The New Yorker, for his uncanny ability to uncover heretofore “lost” music recorded decades ago by seminal and critically acclaimed artists. Feldman found the Limoges recording while doing a search of the INA (Institut national de l’audiovisuel) France archives and realized he had discovered something very special: an audio document of the formidable American gospel great playing solo, accompanying herself on her electric guitar. Feldman commented, “Sister Rosetta Tharpe has been a towering and trailblazing figure in music even decades and decades after her passing in 1973, and her influence is still being felt to this day. This recording has never been released before and I consider it a very special time capsule of a document that transports you back to a wonderful performance in the mid-1960s in France.”

Feldman worked tirelessly to put the music he’d discovered in a setting befitting the brilliance of the artist and the significance of his find. To that end, Live in France is offered in a lavishly packaged set with rare photos, meticulous art direction and voluminous liner notes by Tharpe experts as well as commentary from contemporary musicians who are in awe of Tharpe, her talent and ongoing legacy. The album is being released on Feldman’s new imprint Deep Digs, in partnership with Elemental Music.

The set features a lengthy essay by Tharpe biographer Gayle Wald, author of Shout, Sister Shout!: The Untold Story of Rock-and-Roll Trailblazer Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Wald wrote, “Sister Rosetta was the first guitar heroine of rock & roll. Her heartfelt gospel folksiness gave way to her roaring mastery of her trusty Gibson Les Paul Custom, which she wielded on a level that rivaled the best of her male contemporaries.” Also included are descriptive notes, translated from French by Jean Buzelin, author of Sister Rosetta Tharpe: La femme qui inventa le Rock ‘n’ Roll. He chronicles her exhaustive touring in Europe and her special relationship with French audiences. Her influence on British guitar players including Keith Richards, Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton is widely acknowledged with all the overmentioned having seen her perform when she toured with Muddy Waters and other American blues greats. There is also a heartwarming narrative by Donna Rhea Hamilton (grandmother of Tedeschi Trucks Band drummer Isaac Eady), at whose childhood home in Tullahoma, TN Tharpe was a house guest when she came to town – by Greyhound Bus – to perform at the AME Church there in the late ‘60s. She recalls Sister Rosetta as a “sweet, sweet soul, down to earth just like normal people,” and helping her mother cook for the family.

Beyond those exhaustive notes are comments from Susan Tedeschi, ZZ Top’s Billy F Gibbons, Shemekia Copeland, Henry Rollins, Brian Ray and Bonnie Raitt who wrote, “Rosetta was one of the most beloved and influential artists ever in gospel music…and she blazed a trail for the rest of us women guitarists with her indomitable spirit and accomplished, engaging style. She has long been deserving of wider recognition and a place of honor in the field of music history.” Susan Tedeschi also offered, “I don’t know of anybody really who plays exactly like she does, but I can hear her influence in people from Little Richard to Elvis Presley, to Clapton, to Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, a lot of different people. You can hear her in their playing, so when you hear that rock and roll thing, it really kind of comes from her.” Billy F Gibbons commented, “As a guitarist I have to celebrate her six-string slingin’ . . . nobody had done anything like that before and is due a debt of gratitude for being the soulful pioneer she was.” Shemekia Copeland commented, “If Rosetta had been a Mister instead of a Sister, she would have been as famous as Little Richard, Chuck Berry or even Elvis. In fact, she inspired all of them. She was that original. And she’s an inspiration to me every time I perform. Sister Rosetta rocked!!!!” That assertion was seconded by Henry Rollins who stated, “Sister Rosetta rocks absolutely.”
