Sweet Sounds Return: Calgary’s Beloved Children’s Jazz Artist MUSIC WITH MANDY Unveils ‘Sugar Rush’

0

Calgary-based Music with Mandy, the charming children’s jazz artist, is back with her latest single, “Sugar Rush.” Mandy Morris, the creative force behind Music with Mandy, weaves her magic with warm vocals and light-hearted compositions.

The inception of “Sugar Rush” in April 2020 coincided with a moment of uncertainty. It unfolded when Mandy faced a temporary halt in the production of her previous album, “From My Head to My Toes.” Undeterred, Mandy, was determined to turn a setback into something sweet, as she collaborated with the imaginative 7-year-old prodigy, Graham Smart, over Zoom. Together, they crafted a musical tale centred around the irresistible allure of candy, inviting listeners on a whimsical adventure into a candy store filled with sugary delights.

Performed at various festivals, “Sugar Rush” captures the essence of boredom, hyperactivity, and a sugar crash, creating a delicious treat for audiences of all ages. Mandy’s bright performances bring the lyrics to life, with kids in the audience mirroring the story’s emotions.

Mandy is passionate about connecting children and their families with music, and “Sugar Rush” is another of her stories through song that helps young children navigate their emotions indulging in a music high that lingers long after the last note fades away.

JUNO Award Nominee Jazz Singer/Songwriter ALEX BIRD Caps 2023 with 100,000 Streams

0

Alex Bird is a JUNO nominated jazz singer, songwriter and actor in Toronto, ON. Alex and his band “The Jazz Mavericks” are working on an entirely new chapter of the Great American Songbook; they are pushing the boundaries of a beautiful tradition and bringing it into a new era. Bird’s original debut album “Whisky Kisses” (Oct 2020) received reviews, awards, airplay, and distribution around the world.

Following that momentum, Bird and The Jazz Mavericks released their second album, “You Are the Light and the Way” (Nov 2021). Bird and songwriting partner Ewen Farncombe wrote 12 new originals, and the album was recently nominated for Best Vocal Jazz Album at the JUNO Awards (2022). The album was made possible thanks to the generosity of the Canada Council for the Arts.

Alex Bird and the Jazz Mavericks are quickly becoming an in-demand band.

Alex literally grew up with the classics. As a young boy he was taken to hang around the Toronto Jazz scene, and had the opportunity to see and meet many of the greats along the way; Tony Bennett, Diana Krall, Ray Brown, Oscar Peterson, Mel Tormé, Ray Charles…the list goes on. Without even knowing it, his musical training developed, sitting around at smoky Jazz clubs into the wee small hours of the morning.

From One Legend To Another: Jay Douglas Pays Resounding Tribute to Dennis Brown with ‘The World Is Troubled’

0

In a world where treasured vocalists are born, covering a legend’s classic isn’t for the weak. More so a recreation of Dennis Brown’s reggae classic– an artist once christened by Bob Marley as one of the greatest reggae singers out there. And yet Jay Douglas’ re-embodiment of “The World Is Troubled” is a timely homage to the original.

Toronto-based singer, Douglas comes full circle with this new release, since first taking on the stage in Jamaica years ago as a teenager. From that point, the JUNO-nominated and award-winning Canadian Reggae icon has found a lane in the fusion of a wide-variety American repertoire that includes Jazz, West Indian rhythm, and blues. Where he remains an underrated, multitalented, and legendary artisan.

Douglas shares what every person could wonder– recording Dennis Brown’s archetypal song.

“I’ve always been a big fan of Dennis Brown and his music,” he says. “The Crown Prince of Reggae was a kind man who would give you his last dollar if he saw you needed it. He had a great R&B style and did wonderful renditions of many Rhythm and Blues classics like Ben E. King’s “Spanish Harlem”.”

This latest single “The World Is Troubled” from Douglas is a reflection of what humanity has metamorphosed into. The singer interpolates the original song’s message of “the world is troubled, but not the people of this world.”

Especially highlighting these specific lyrics, ‘The world is troubled and living ain’t easy’. What are we doing for our grandchildren, the next generation?”

The remake features conscious artist Tasha T, who has vowed to keep targeted messages in her music. At just the 2:00 mark on the song, Toronto-based singer, Tasha readies herself to deliver powerful vocals as she sings, “I wonder if you know what is going on every day, so much to do and so much to say.” She continues to assert herself, “Let them not set us apart, the greed is tearing us apart.”

Jay Douglas reached out to Kingston-born drummer Lowell Fillmore, known by his moniker Sly Dunbar to collaborate with on the song. “He said he was on the original track,” he explains “so he got together the same guys that recorded the original.”

Douglas continues to inspire and enthrall audiences with his gift ever since debuting over 45 years ago. In “The World Is Troubled,” the continued attempt to impart imperative messages to listeners is achieved so well. The spiritedness from the musical production is felt and will motivate listeners to make a change.

The Rolling Stones Singles 1966-1971 Vinyl Set Coming February 2, 2024

0

ABKCO Records will release The Rolling Stones Singles 1966-1971 on February 2. The limited-edition set includes reproductions of 18 7” vinyl singles and extended play records by “The World’s Greatest Rock ‘n’ Roll Band,” as originally released by Decca, London Records and ABKCO Records. The collection serves as a second volume and companion to The Rolling Stones Singles 1963-1966 (ABKCO, 2022). All tracks were remastered by 13-time Grammy Award-winning engineer Bob Ludwig, and the discs are manufactured by Third Man Pressing in Detroit. The set, replete with period-correct picture sleeve art, will also come with a 32-page book containing extensive liner notes by Stones authority Nigel Williamson, as well as rare photos and ephemera, plus a set of five photo cards and a poster, all housed in a hard-shell box.

The Rolling Stones Singles 1966-1971 spans a crucial period in the band’s evolution, when their move towards the experimental and psychedelic sounds of “We Love You” and “She’s a Rainbow” gave way to the rootsy, blues-based rock of “Honky Tonk Women” and “Wild Horses.” Also during this time, guitarist/founding member Brian Jones was replaced by Mick Taylor – the first lineup change since the group’s founding. Amidst the stylistic shifts and tumult between ’66 and ’71, the Stones racked up seven Top 10 singles on both sides of the Atlantic, including four Number Ones.

“Paint It, Black” topped the charts internationally in 1966. Its eerie tone and sitar line played by Brian Jones sounded nothing like what the band had previously recorded. Singles 1966-1971 contains both the US and UK versions of the 45; the latter’s B-side “Long Long While” is a rare non-LP track. Other rare B-sides in the set include “Who’s Driving Your Plane” from the US Top 10 hit “Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing In The Shadow?,” and “Child Of The Moon” from UK #1 “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.” Stones collectors will also take satisfaction in the mono mixes of “We Love You” and its flipside “Dandelion” (1967), which both contain a reprise at the end with an ode to the other track. These are both exclusive to the single release.

Released in August 1968, the picture sleeve for the “Street Fighting Man”/”No Expectations” single depicts protestors being brutalized by police. After the Chicago Police Department ravaged anti-war protestors outside the Democratic National Convention later that same month, the Stones’ US label withdrew the single, making it one of the most sought-after collector’s items in the band’s canon. The Rolling Stones Singles 1966-1971collection faithfully reproduces that controversial record art, and also includes the 1971 UK maxi-single version of “Street Fighting Man,” with “Surprise Surprise” and “Everybody Needs Somebody To Love.” While not technically a Rolling Stones song, Mick Jagger’s “Memo From Turner” from the Performance soundtrack is included. Originally released as a single in 1970, the song features slide guitar by Ry Cooder, and its B-side “Natural Magic” is a Cooder instrumental.

While every track on The Rolling Stones 1966-1971 box set was recorded in the time frame suggested by its title, some of the records were originally released later. “I Don’t Know Why,” “Out Of Time” and the stereo mix of the 1969 #1 hit “Honky Tonk Women” were 45s that came out in 1975-76, around the time ABKCO issued the Stones rarities album Metamorphosis. “Sympathy For The Devil” was remixed separately by The Neptunes and Fat Boy Slim in 2003 and originally released as part of a Super Audio CD at the time – it exists here as a 7” vinyl record.

ABKCO Records is home to catalog of The Rolling Stones from the band’s inception to early 1971. This includes the albums The Rolling Stones, England’s Newest Hit Makers, 12 X 5, The Rolling Stones No. 2, The Rolling Stones, Now!, Out of Our Heads, December’s Children (And Everybody’s), Aftermath, Got Live If You Want It!, Between the Buttons, Their Satanic Majesties Request, Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed and Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out! The Rolling Stones in Concert. ABKCO Films is home to Charlie Is My Darling – Ireland 1965 and The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus.

Russia Puts Pussy Riot’s Nadya Tolokonnikova On The Terrorist List

0

As of today, Russia has added Nadya Tolokonnikova, a prominent member of the protest punk group Pussy Riot, to its terrorist list, sparking widespread concern and criticism. This move is seen as an alarming development, considering Tolokonnikova’s history of advocating for political and social change through activism and art. Pussy Riot gained international attention for their fearless performances challenging the Russian government, and Tolokonnikova’s inclusion in the terrorist list raises questions about the state’s approach to dissenting voices. Human rights advocates and supporters of free expression should be continuing to emphasizing the importance of protecting individuals’ rights to peaceful protest and artistic expression, and the decision to label Tolokonnikova as a terrorist reflects a broader trend of tightening restrictions on activism and dissent in Russia, and must be seen from the international community – especially those in music – as nothing less than censorship and dangerous actions from the Russian government.

Tolokonnikova has released this statement: I’ve been vocal about sending aid, humanitarian and military, to Ukraine since day 1, I stand by this today. A year ago, I announced a gallery show called “Putin’s Ashes” and I was added to the wanted list. Last week, I announced a Hollywood production of my story and they escalated their review of me – a terrorist.

Yesterday Biden said “If you’re being celebrated by Russian propagandists, it might be time to rethink what you are doing.”

So in that same way, if Russia calls me a terrorist, I must be doing something right.
I’m happy to show republican congress members what it means to have a spine, and to stand up for freedom, and for Ukraine.

Putin’s Russia is a terrorist state, there’s no reasoning or negotiations with them. My friend and comrade Alexey Navalny, who was poisoned by a nerve agent in 2019, has recently gone missing in Russian jail where he serves his 19 year prison sentence – we don’t know where he is for 7 days. It’s a military dictatorship, as real as it gets.

Damian and Stephen Marley have written and performed a multitude of singles together over the last two decades – including the most recent collaboration, “Cast The First Stone” from Stephen Marley’s new LP Old Soul. The brothers wrote/produced/performed on the anthemic Grammy-winning reggae classic “Welcome To Jamrock,” in addition to timeless compositions like “Medication,” “Grown & Sexy,” “All Night,” “It Was Written,” and, of course, “Traffic Jam.”

Stephen Marley, the acclaimed 8x GRAMMY Award-winning singer/songwriter/producer, marks a momentous return with the recent release of Old Soul, his first full-length project in seven years, available now in all formats including digital, CD, standard black 2LP vinyl, and a limited-edition double LP vinyl in stunning translucent yellow and green discs. This much-anticipated album, released by Tuff Gong Collective/UMe/Ghetto Youths International, boasts a star-studded lineup of special guests featuring music legends including Eric Clapton, Bob Weir, Jack Johnson, Ziggy Marley, Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley, Buju Banton, and Slightly Stoopid.

Multi-Grammy-winning talent Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley is a highly acclaimed Jamaican singer, songwriter, and producer. He is the youngest son of the revered legend Bob Marley. His musical style fuses reggae with elements of dancehall, hip-hop, R&B, and rock, crafting a fresh and modern sound that is uniquely his own. Damian was the first ever Reggae artist to win a GRAMMY AWARD outside of the Reggae category. The acclaimed 2005 breakthrough disc, Welcome To Jamrock, won a GRAMMY AWARD for Best Reggae Album, with the New York Times naming the track “the best reggae song of the decade.” In 2010, Marley teamed up with Nas and brother Stephen Marley for his Distant Relatives project and went on to partner with Skrillex for their groundbreaking track “Make It Bun Dem,” which Rolling Stone called “a monster mash-up of dubstep and dancehall.” Which went platinum with over 1 Million copies sold in the United States alone. Following the track’s success, the reggae superstar released his fourth studio album, Stony Hill, resulting in his third GRAMMY AWARD for Best Reggae Album. In September of 2022, Marley released his fifth studio album, The Kalling, which went on to win Best Reggae Album at the 65th Annual GRAMMY AWARDS. Most recently, “Jr. Gong” released his rendition of the famed George Harrison track, ‘My Sweet Lord.’. The track got the stamp of approval from George’s beloved wife, Olivia, as well as the George Harrison Estate. Damian is the co-founder of the renowned Welcome To Jamrock Reggae Cruise, which is gearing up for its 9th annual.

Stephen “Ragga” Marley is a world-renowned singer, songwriter, and producer whose work has earned no fewer than eight Grammy Awards. Born into a musical family, Stephen is the child of reggae legends Bob Marley and Rita Marley. He began singing professionally at 6, touring the world with his elder siblings Ziggy, Sharon, and Cedella in The Melody Makers. In 2008, he released his first solo album, Mind Control, which won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album. His subsequent solo albums include Mind Control Acoustic, Revelation Part I: The
Root of Life, and Revelation Part II: The Fruit of Life. Stephen’s first new full-length album in more than seven years, Old Soul, was released on September 15 via Tuff Gong Collective/UMe/Ghetto Youths International. The new album is a departure from his previous Reggae repertoire, showcasing more of his bluesy, acoustic soul side, as evidenced by the first single, “Old Soul.” Stephen is also an acclaimed producer, working closely with his brother Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley on the massive crossover hit Welcome To Jamrock. In addition, Stephen continues to champion charitable endeavors centered in Jamaica as a co-founder of the Ghetto Youths Foundation, along with his brothers Damian and Julian Marley.  In 2017, Stephen established Kaya Fest, the annual music festival, which features special guests and rare family performances, all with the larger purpose of raising awareness around the benefits of cannabis, guided by the mantra “Education Before Recreation.”

My Next Read: “What a Fool Believes: A Memoir” By Michael McDonald and Paul Reiser

0

A sweeping and evocative memoir from the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, Grammy Award–winning, platinum selling icon of blue-eyed soul Michael McDonald, written with his friend, Emmy Award–nominated actor, comedian, and #1 New York Times bestselling author Paul Reiser.

Doobie Brothers. Steely Dan. Chart topping soloist. Across a half-century of American music, Michael McDonald’s unmistakably smooth baritone voice defined an era of rock and R&B with hit records like “What A Fool Believes,” “Takin’ It to the Streets,” “I Keep Forgettin’,” “Peg,” “It Keeps You Running,” “You Belong to Me,” and “Yah Mo B There.”

In his candid, freewheeling memoir, written with his friend, the Emmy Award-nominated actor and comedian Paul Reiser, Michael tells the story of his life and music. A high school dropout from Ferguson, Missouri, Michael chased his dreams in 1970’s California, a heady moment of rock opportunity and excess. As a rising session musician and backing vocalist, a series of encounters would send him on a wild ride around the world and to the heights of rock stardom—from joining Steely Dan and becoming a defining member of The Doobie Brothers to forging a path as a breakout solo R&B artist.

Interwoven with the unforgettable tales of the music, Michael tells a deeply affecting story of losing and finding himself as a man. He reckons with the unshakeable insecurities that drove him, the drug and alcohol addictions that plagued him, and the highs and lows of popularity. Along the way he relays the lessons he’s learned, and that if he’s learned anything at all it’s that there’s often little correlation between what you get and what you deserve.

Filled with unbelievable stories and a matchless cast of music greats including James Taylor, Ray Charles, Carly Simon, and Quincy Jones, What a Fool Believes is a moving and entertaining memoir that is sure to be a classic.
