Montreal’s Musical Maverick YA NO Makes a Sensational Comeback with Mesearch: A Genre-Defying Debut Album

0

Montreal-based YA NO is turning heads with his debut album Mesearch, out now. After over a decade-long hiatus, Edmund Lam has redefined his musical artistry and sound and has come back to the Montreal music scene as genre-defying artist YA NO.

Formerly a member of electro pop duo Hexes & Ohs, Lam’s musical comeback consists of a melting pot of genres, with indie pop at the core, fused with alternative R&B and rap influences. YA NO pulls influence from artists like Mac Miller, Toro y Moi, and Frank Ocean. Mesearch embraces musical diversity with its tracks making leaps from electro grooves to smooth soulful R&B to syncopated rap rhythms.

Before its release, the 9-track record was a project of nearly two years in the making. The creation of Mesearch began during the pandemic as a venture to cure boredom and explore what new sound could come of making music again. The album was produced, written, and recorded entirely by the multi-instrumentalist himself. “[I’m] very happy I found a new voice with the best music I’ve ever made,” he says. Lam made his musical debut as YA NO at the end of 2021. The name originates from Canadian lingo where “yeah no” means no and “no yeah” means yes.

Alongside the album, the bedroom electro artist released a music video for his single “Too Much.” Inspired by 90s magazines and fashion ads, the video pairs the synth-pop single with complimenting visuals. Lam teamed up with video director Fedya Vinkovetsky to produce the ingenious video which features an all-Asian cast in celebration of Montreal’s vibrant Asian creative community.

The debut full-length album has come as a success, leading YA NO to sign with an independent music publisher. The artist presented his pandemic-inspired album to a few contacts in the industry and ultimately started a bidding-war between publishers. YA NO signed with Third Side Music in 2023, undoubtedly with a plentiful electro-filled future ahead.

Critically Acclaimed Toronto-Based World Music Artist Vandana Vishwas Releases “Kabeera – The Thinker..” Album

0

Vandana Vishwas, the critically acclaimed World Music artist from Mississauga, Ontario, is set to unveil her latest musical masterpiece, “Kundaliyaan – 1,” from her upcoming album, “Kabeera – The Thinker….” – releasing 11 October 2023.

“Kundaliyaan – 1” is a significant milestone in Vandana’s illustrious career, showcasing her unique fusion of Indian poetry and contemporary musical arrangements. Her new single is a compelling exploration of the poetic genre known as ‘Kundali,’ rooted in Hindi poetry, characterized by its complex metering. Vandana delves into this elaborate form, inspired by the timeless verses of the great Indian thinker and poet, Kabeer Das. In “Kundaliyaan – 1,” Vandana creatively weaves Kabeer’s profound insights with the enchanting Raag ‘Ahir Bhairav,’ creating a musical tapestry that unravels deep truths in an expressive and captivating manner.

Vandana’s forth album “Kabeera – The Thinker…” which is set to be released on October 11, 2023, pays homage to Kabeer Das’s wisdom, encapsulating his penchant for minimalism combined with universal love and compassion, which are the essentials of Indian culture. The making of this album was a labour of love for Vandana, who meticulously selected eight of Kabeer’s most powerful poems, including the iconic ‘Kundaliyaan,’ to create two distinct compositions—’Kundaliyaan – 1′ and ‘Kundaliyaan – 2.’ Each track capturing the essence of Kabeer’s profound philosophy.

Throughout the creative process, Vandana collaborated with her musical and life partner Vishwas Thoke, who contributed with his guitar skills and musical flare.

“My creative process in making this incredibly fulfilling album led me to some outstanding poetry by Kabeer Das which I had to narrow down to eight,” said the 2017 Best World Music Video award winner. “It took me months to select these eight tracks including carrying ‘The Complete Works of Kabeer Das’ everywhere I went – coffee breaks, long drives, vacations… even river cruises.”

The making of this album began with the release of ‘Mann Lago’ as a single in 2021. However, the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the production of the full album. Vandana was determined to complete the remaining tracks but faced a shortage of funds. Fortunately, Vandana secured partial funding from the Ontario Arts Council, which enabled her to complete the record.

Vandana is a celebrated World Music artist who transitioned from a successful career in architecture to pursue her lifelong passion for music. Despite facing a challenging medical condition from early childhood, Vandana displayed remarkable musical talent, earning a degree in North Indian Classical Vocal music, and becoming an All-India Radio artist during her teenage years.

When Vandana and her husband Vishwas moved to Toronto, it rekindled her love for music. She released her debut album, “Meera – The Lover…” in 2009, which marked her entry into the North American World Music scene, earning critical acclaim and several awards. Subsequent releases like “Monologues” in 2013 and “Parallels” in 2016 continued to garner recognition and accolades, with the latter album achieving significant chart success and earning her awards, including the Marty Award by Mississauga Arts Council, Toronto Independent Music Award for World Music, US Independent Music Award as well as nominations in Canadian Indies, KM Hunter Award for music by Ontario Arts Council and more.

Jam Band Road Waves’ Latest Single ‘Frog Rock’ Leaps Into A 10-Minute Musical Adventure + Announces Fall Tour

1

How many songs do you know about a frog on a rock? Not even Kermit sang about the simplicity of hanging out on your pad, but the latest single from Ontario-based jam band Road Waves strays no further.

“Frog Rock” is as advertised, outlining the story of a frog who can’t wait to go to his favorite rock and enjoy everything it and its surroundings have to offer. In typical Road Waves fashion, the bouncy tune lasts for nearly 10 minutes, with loads of captivating melodies and harmonies interwoven into the consistently positive and upbeat sound.

When he wrote the song, Road Waves vocalist and guitarist Ji Sharp said its playfulness was a way for him to cope.

“I wrote ‘Frog Rock’ with the intention of bringing more lighthearted fun into the world,” he explained. “As life became increasingly dark and challenging for me, I felt compelled to create something that had a no hidden agenda or profound message – although one could argue that the absence of such is a statement itself.”

Turning to light to shield from darkness, Sharp penned lyrics that infuse a child-like wonder with nuances that adults can appreciate.

“Hoppin’ in the trees, and bouncing on the canopy
Sittin’ on the forest floor, waiting for my morning feed
Glistening in the breeze, Diptera in the atmosphere
Lots of things to eat, I finally found my place to be”

That was intentional, Sharp said. He wanted to make something that anyone could find solace in.

“While many musicians choose to write songs about love or heartbreak, I wanted to create a story that could be enjoyed by everyone,” he said. “From toddlers to the elderly, I aimed to craft a tale centered around an endearing frog who simply wants to revel in his time on his little rock.”

One day after Road Waves released ‘Frog Rock’ on Spotify, the streaming platform added it to its editorial playlist, “Modern Jam Bands,” and in three months, the song has amassed more than 15,000 streams and 3,000 views on YouTube. Perhaps Sharp’s plan is working.

Road Waves is about much more than streams, though. Since its founding in 2014, performing live has been central to the band’s identity. Over the last five years especially, hitting the road has been regular for the group, extensively touring across Canada and the United States with energetic, soulful, and funky shows that consistently push the bar.

When the pandemic forced worldwide shutdowns in 2020, Road Waves began doing concerts over livestream and used video to stay in touch with the fans they would usually interact with in person. Near the end of the 2020 summer, the band successfully engineered a social-distanced drive-in concert, further testament to the energy it puts into delivering live music for its listeners.
“Our shows are built on a philosophy of playing from our hearts and open minds, making for an exciting journey with a huge sound,” the band said. “The synergy with our audience is apparent from the start, and each time a song is played, it grows and develops as a better version of itself – much like the living being that is music.”

Road Waves is on tour now, traversing across the Eastern Time Zone in Canada and across the border this fall, hitting a wide range of spots in Ontario, New Brunswick, Maine, Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, and Ohio.

Renée Catrine Blossoms with Her Second LP ‘From The Garden’ – A True Alternative Gem of Lyrical Talent and Mesmerizing Melodies

0

Brooklyn-based artist Renée Catrine has released her latest album From The Garden. The record comes as Catrine’s second LP and follows the musician’s true alternative style all while bringing lyrical talent and head-bobbing melodies to her listeners.

The 11-track album bounces between gritty up-beat rock tracks and soft emotive ballads. From The Garden kicks the door down right from the start with drum-heavy tracks and impressive guitar riffs that take the spotlight from time to time. In this latest release, Catrine experiments with opposing styles and tempos. As the album goes on, it becomes more orchestrated with moodier ballads coming through, one of which is completely sung in French.

This latest record is meant to reflect the abundance of moments we experience and how they differ from one another. Catrine compares this energy to a garden with many shapes and colours which transforms from day to day and is never captured in the same way.

From The Garden’s anthem “Enough” showcases the album’s themes of reflection and perseverance and captures the record’s main message asking listeners to contemplate what is truly enough.

The heights we could rise
If we dared just to begin
How far we could run
If we dared just this time to believe
We were enough

More than the lyrical talent, “Enough” is also made of moving melodies that gradually build up. The single tastefully combines steady light drums and an escalation to string additions and eventually beautiful yet commanding horns.

“The Closing,” the record’s delicate closing song, was thoughtfully placed with the hope of leaving listeners with a sense of peace and comfort as the song trails off. The tracks that make up From The Garden were created in Brooklyn, with the exception of “Les Laurentides” and “Winter Town” which were written in Quebec City.

Having spent most of her life surrounded by music, it’s clear that Catrine’s musical background prepared her for From The Garden. Her talent is showcased in the skill diversity and deliberate musical choices that make up the album. This bold release exudes playful and fun energy while remaining deeply emotive and moving. Pulling inspiration from bands like Arcade Fire and Coeur de Pirate, Catrine’s alternative pop-rock style shines through.
