The Last Beatles Song “Now And Then” To Be Released November 2

0

Together and apart, The Beatles have always had a talent for the unexpected. And now, 2023 brings one of the most anticipated releases of their long and endlessly eventful history. “Now And Then” is the last Beatles song – written and sung by John Lennon, developed and worked on by Paul McCartneyGeorge Harrison and Ringo Starr, and now finally finished by Paul and Ringo over four decades later.

“Now And Then” will be released worldwide at 2pm GMT / 10am EDT / 7am PDT on Thursday 2nd November by Apple Corps Ltd./Capitol/UMe/Universal Music Canada. The double A-side single pairs the last Beatles song with the first: the band’s 1962 debut UK single, “Love Me Do,” a truly fitting full-circle counterpart to “Now And Then.” Both songs are mixed in stereo and Dolby Atmos®, and the release features original cover art by renowned artist Ed Ruscha. The new music video for “Now And Then” will debut on Friday, 3rd November. More details including global premiere plans will be announced.

A 12-minute “Now And Then – The Last Beatles Song” documentary filmwritten and directed by Oliver Murray, will premiere on 1st November. The film’s global online premiere will be hosted on The Beatles’ YouTube channel at 7:30pm GMT / 3:30pm EDT / 12:30pm PDT. This poignant short film tells the story behind the last Beatles song, with exclusive footage and commentary from Paul, Ringo, George, Sean Ono Lennon and Peter Jackson.

The story of “Now And Then” begins in the late 1970s, when John recorded a demo with vocals and piano at his home in New York’s Dakota Building. In 1994, his wife, Yoko Ono Lennon, gave the recording to Paul, George and Ringo, along with John’s demos for “Free As A Bird” and “Real Love”, which were both completed as new Beatles songs and respectively released as singles in 1995 and 1996, as part of The Beatles Anthology project. At the same time, Paul, George and Ringo also recorded new parts and completed a rough mix for “Now And Then” with producer Jeff Lynne. At that point, technological limitations prevented John’s vocals and piano from being separated to achieve the clear, unclouded mix needed to finish the song. “Now And Then” was shelved, with a hope that one day it would be revisited.

Cut to 2021, and the release of “The Beatles: Get Back” docuseries, directed by Peter Jackson, which astonished viewers with its award-winning film and audio restoration. Using WingNut Films’ MAL audio technology, Jackson’s team had de-mixed the film’s mono soundtrack, managing to isolate instruments and vocals, and all the individual voices within The Beatles conversations. This achievement opened the way to 2022’s new mix of Revolver, sourced directly from the four-track master tapes. This led on to a question: what could now be done with the “Now And Then” demo? Peter Jackson and his sound team, led by Emile de la Rey, applied the same technique to John’s original home recording, preserving the clarity and integrity of his original vocal performance by separating it from the piano.

In 2022, Paul and Ringo set about completing the song. Besides John’s vocal, “Now And Then” includes electric and acoustic guitar recorded in 1995 by George, Ringo’s new drum part, and bass, guitar and piano from Paul, which matches John’s original playing. Paul added a slide guitar solo inspired by George; he and Ringo also contributed backing vocals to the chorus.

In Los Angeles, Paul oversaw a Capitol Studios recording session for the song’s wistful, quintessentially Beatles string arrangement, written by Giles Martin, Paul and Ben Foster. Paul and Giles also added one last, wonderfully subtle touch: backing vocals from the original recordings of “Here, There And Everywhere”, “Eleanor Rigby” and “Because”, woven into the new song using the techniques perfected during the making of the LOVE show and album. The finished track was produced by Paul and Giles, and mixed by Spike Stent.

Paul says: “There it was, John’s voice, crystal clear. It’s quite emotional. And we all play on it, it’s a genuine Beatles recording. In 2023 to still be working on Beatles music, and about to release a new song the public haven’t heard, I think it’s an exciting thing.”

Ringo says: “It was the closest we’ll ever come to having him back in the room so it was very emotional for all of us. It was like John was there, you know. It’s far out.”

Olivia Harrison says: “Back in 1995, after several days in the studio working on the track, George felt the technical issues with the demo were insurmountable and concluded that it was not possible to finish the track to a high enough standard. If he were here today, Dhani and I know he would have whole-heartedly joined Paul and Ringo in completing the recording of ‘Now And Then’.”

Sean Ono Lennon says: “It was incredibly touching to hear them working together after all the years that Dad had been gone. It’s the last song my dad, Paul, George and Ringo got to make together. It’s like a time capsule and all feels very meant to be.”

Excitement and anticipation for “Now And Then” has been building since June, when Paul first teased “a new Beatles song” in a media interview. Finally, on Thursday, 2nd November, “Now And Then” will be shared with the world as it was always meant to be heard.

This last instalment of The Beatles’ recorded history will be followed by new editions of the two compilation albums always seen as the definitive introduction to their work.  Since their 1973 debuts, 1962-1966 (‘The Red Album’) and 1967-1970 (‘The Blue Album’) collections have ushered countless listeners of all ages, from all parts of the world, into lifelong Beatles fandom. Expanded for their new 2023 Edition releases (out 10th November), the collections together span The Beatles’ entire recorded canon with 75 standout tracks, from their first single, “Love Me Do”, to their last, “Now And Then”. The collections’ 21 newly-added tracks (twelve on ‘Red’ , and nine on ‘Blue’) showcase even more of The Beatles’ very best songs.

In recent years, several 1967-1970 tracks and a few from 1962-1966 have received new stereo and Dolby Atmos mixes for The Beatles’ Special Edition album releases, including Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (2017), The Beatles (‘White Album’) (2018), Abbey Road (2019), Let It Be (2021), and Revolver (2022), as well as new stereo mixes for The Beatles’ 1 (2015). All tracks not also featured on those releases have been newly mixed in stereo and/or Dolby Atmos by Giles Martin and Sam Okell at Abbey Road Studios, aided by WingNut Films’ audio de-mixing technology. Both collections include new essays written by journalist and author John Harris.

INXS Returns To Sydney To Celebrate A Momentous Occasion, Reaching Over 4 Billion Streams Globally

0

INXS band members Andrew, Tim & Jon Farriss, Kirk Pengilly, and Garry Gary Beers came together for the first time in six years last week for an intimate lunch event in Sydney, Australia, hosted by Universal Music (Australia) and Petrol Records, to celebrate their incredible contribution to the global music industry by reaching an astonishing milestone of 4 billion streams.

“It’s truly mind-blowing that our music has been streamed over 4,000,000,000 times – and incredibly humbling,” Tim Farriss reflects. “I’m grateful I’m not the one tallying them all! Our success can be attributed to crafting amazing songs as a band that’s grown up together, made a pact, and devoted our lives to performing them. This achievement truly demonstrates the enduring relevance of our music to this day.

A special acknowledgment was also made to Michael Hutchence and Petrol Records Chairman and Founder, the late Chris Murphy, who guided INXS’ music globally for decades and ensured INXS continued to evolve and generate new audiences for years to come.

Andrew Farriss shares, “As we celebrate this monumental milestone of 4 billion streams together, we all acknowledge that it’s a feat that would have made Michael incredibly proud, as it does for all of us.

Forty-six years ago, on August 16, 1977, The Farriss Brothers, a band that would soon be renamed INXS, played their debut gig at a house party in Whale Beach, Sydney. Since that day, INXS has sold over 70 million albums worldwide, making them one of Australia’s biggest-selling music acts of all time.

The band has a long list of milestone achievements they have accomplished in the past decade alone, including INXS The Very Best album, surpassing its 581st week on the Australian ARIA Top 100 album chart, which equates to over 11 years in the Top 100 – the longest stay of any album in the current top 100.

Each band member received a unique award crafted by Aboriginal artist Timothy Cook. His artwork features circles to symbolize the moon and the pwanga (dots), representing the japalinga (stars).   The artist and this particular painting were chosen for the achievement award due to their connection to Full Moon Dirty Hearts, which is on the cusp of its 30th anniversary. For more information on Timothy Cook’s work, click HERE.

“Michael’s absence is deeply felt by all of us,” Andrew Farriss continues, “and it’s a common thread and sentiment that’s vividly captured within the pages of Calling All Nations, which serves as a testament to the enduring love for and of our fans.” And that’s not all – the band are set to release INXS – All Juiced Up Part 2, a collection of nine strictly limited-edition color vinyl 12” records. The follow-up to All Juiced Up, a limited-edition remix CD/Cassette that accompanied INXS’s 1994 multi-platinum-selling Greatest Hits album, All Juiced Up Part 2 features remixes of “Need You Tonight,” “Listen Like Thieves,” “New Sensation,” “What Your Need,” “Suicide Blonde,” “Original Sin,” and many more from the band’s illustrious career.

The band, spurred on by their revered long-time manager Chris Murphy, were always proponents of the 12” version, and they even released a collection of their mixes ‘Dekadance’ as far back as 1983. Murphy had the incredible foresight to see that a rock band with a strong presence on the dancefloor could take the world by storm. He was proven correct and ensured they always worked with the world’s hottest remixers throughout the band’s lifespan, including Paul Oakenfold, Basement Jaxx, Francois Kervorkian, Peter Lorimer, and many more. The title itself, All Juiced Up, also came from Chris Murphy. All Juiced Up Part 2 was remastered at Abbey Road and will only be produced for a one-time limited edition color vinyl run. The first volume of three will be available on November 10, followed by the two remaining sets being released in 2024.

Virtually all of the tracks on INXS All Juiced Up Part 2 have been deleted and unavailable in some cases for decades. As the collection builds, there will be surprises in store for even the most hardcore INXS fan, and when it is complete, the reverse of the nine 12” records will form a giant image of the band in their prime. Pre-order All Juiced Up Part 2 HERE

As if that wasn’t enough –  the band recently celebrated the anniversaries of Kick (October 12, 1987), Shabooh Shoobah (October 13, 1982), and Listen Like Thieves (October 14, 1985) and will be celebrating the forthcoming 30th Anniversary of Full Moon Dirty Hearts (November 2, 1993) with a Dolby Atmos mix by Giles Martin that will be released on November 3, along with the HD remastered version of the innovative Album Visual from 1994 celebrating each song visually.

Feist Announces “The Multitudes Finale Tour”

0

Today, Feist announced The Multitudes Finale Tour, which will feature the 11-time Juno Award winner performing in the round with 360-degree immersive sound. The production was conceived by Feist and developed with artist/filmmaker Colby Richardson, artist Heather Goodchild and Artistic Producer Mary Hickson.

Multitudes – Feist’s sixth full-length album and first release since 2017’s critically acclaimed Pleasure – was released on April 14 via Interscope Records. The new songs were largely written during an intensely communal 2021-2022 tour of the same name, which was hailed as a “work of genius” by the Toronto Star. The run included a three-night stand at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium. After the tour, Feist retreated to Northern California’s Redwood Forest to record the album, which she produced alongside Robbie Lackritz (Peach Pit, The Weather Station, Bahamas, Jack Johnson, Robbie Robertson) and Mocky (Jamie Lidell, Vulfpeck, Kelela), who had partnered with her on 2011’s Metals.

The official video for “In Lightning” captures Feist’s joyful performance of the song at the water’s edge on a deserted beach. She directed the video with Julia Hendrickson and Sara Melvin. View HERE. The New York Times’ Jon Pareles said, “She sings about lightning as illumination, as power and as revelation; is it ‘in lightning’ or ‘enlightening’? The track begins with clattering drums and banshee vocal harmonies, then veers between hushed contemplation and a brawny, Celtic-flavored stomp.” Pitchfork observed, “Feist talks of keeping her energy intact in a hectic world as strings zip by like a bug zooming in your ear…It all retains the common feeling in her music of pieces falling together, each element getting its own space to shine. The queen of controlled calamity has officially returned.”

Multitudes took shape soon after the birth of Feist’s daughter and the sudden death of her father. Amid meditations on mortality, connection and the frenetic state of the human condition, the album ultimately radiates an ineffable sense of hope.

Green Day Shares ‘The American Dream Is Killing Me’ From Forthcoming ‘Saviors’ Album

Global rock superstars Green Day – Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool – have returned with a fiery call to action on “The American Dream Is Killing Me,” the first single and opening track from the group’s 14th studio album Saviors, releasing January 19th, 2024 via Reprise/Warner Records – pre-order HERE. The band debuted “The American Dream Is Killing Me” and “Look Ma, No Brains!” off the new album live last weekend during their triumphant and electrifying Las Vegas, NV, takeover, consisting of a sold-out surprise show at the 800 capacity Fremont and back-to-back headlining performances at When We Were Young Festival.  Listen to “The American Dream is Killing Me” and watch the accompanying music video, directed by Brendan Walter and Ryan Baxley, HERE.   There will also be several exclusive vinyl versions of Saviors available including neon pink with neon green splatter, and black ice with hot pink splatter, with most in very limited supply and pressed only once.

“The American Dream Is Killing Me” was one of the last tracks written and recorded by Green Day for Saviors. “As soon we cut it, we said, `Okay, that’s going first,’” says Billie Joe Armstrong who describes the new song as “a look at the way the traditional American Dream doesn’t work for a lot of people — in fact, it’s hurting a lot of people.”

Recorded in London and Los Angeles, Saviors is the latest powerful collaboration between Green Day and Grammy-winning producer Rob Cavallo, whose notable previous work with Green Day includes two of the band’s most iconic albums, 1994’s Dookie and 2004’s American Idiot. The record comes just ahead of Dookie’s 30th anniversary – celebrations have already begun with the release of a massive deluxe edition of the album and a surprise show in Las Vegas where the band performed Dookie from front to back to a sold-out crowd of superfans.

Alongside the track the band has unveiled a film noir inspired black and white music video featuring Green Day in the midst of a zombie apocalypse. The killer video was directed by Brendan Walter and Ryan Baxley and shot in Los Angeles.

Green Day will also be performing this Thursday, October 26 as part of Amazon Music Live’s concert series, and on November 19, the band is heading up north to headline the Twisted Tea Grey Cup Halftime Show for the 110th Grey Cup at Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton, Ontario.

Formed in 1986 in Berkeley, CA, Green Day is one of the world’s best-selling bands of all time, with more than 75 million records sold worldwide and 10 billion cumulative audio/visual streams. The five-time Grammy Award-winning Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees released their breakout album Dookie in 1994, which sold over 10 million and achieved 10x Platinum Diamond status, is widely credited with popularizing and reviving mainstream interest in punk rock, catapulting a career-long run of #1 hit singles. Entertainment Weekly calls Green Day, “The most influential band of their generation,” while Rolling Stone attests, “Green Day have inspired more young bands to start than any act this side of Kiss, and that doesn’t seem to be changing.” In 2004, Green Day released the rock opera American Idiot which captured the nation’s attention, selling more than 8 million copies in the U.S. alone and taking home the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. Mojo declared “It’s exhilarating stuff, the kind of record that sets new parameters as to what is possible from a punk rock’n’roll band in the 21st century.” In 2010, a stage adaptation of American Idiot debuted on Broadway to critical and commercial acclaim. Released in 2020, Green Day’s thirteenth studio album Father Of All… debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Album Sales Chart and #1 in both the U.K. and Australia. Pitchfork declared, “Green Day’s most fetching and youthful songs in ages. The trio sounds reinvigorated, more like hungry newcomers staking their claim.” In July 2021, Green Day embarked on The Hella Mega Tour (w/ Fall Out Boy & Weezer). The global tour included 29 sold-out stadium gigs – including renowned venues like London Stadium and Los Angeles’ Dodger Stadium. Watch out for more exciting music news coming soon.
