My Next Read: “Johnny Cash: The Life In Lyrics”

0

The life of the Man in Black revealed by his lyrics and by rare photographs and ephemera, in a lavishly illustrated edition authorized by the Cash estate

Johnny Cash is one of the most beloved and influential country-music stars of all time, having composed more than six hundred songs and sold more than ninety million records. He received twenty-nine gold, platinum, and multiplatinum awards for his recordings and has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the Country Music Hall of Fame, and the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

This is the first time Cash’s fifty years of songwriting have been collected anywhere; this book includes the lyrics to 125 songs and the stories behind them. Perhaps more than any other American artist, he spoke to the soul of the nation as well as to the triumphs and challenges of his own life. These pages explore Cash’s range as a poet and storyteller, taking readers from his early life and first successes through periods of personal challenge, activism, and faith. The result is a profound understanding of Johnny Cash as a man and an artist, as well as the American story he helped shape.

An essential collectible that sheds new light on Cash’s life and work, this book includes rare visual material in addition to remembrances from Cash’s son, John Carter Cash, “family historian” Mark Stielper. Released for the twentieth anniversary of the legendary musician’s passing, it will be a landmark in music publishing

Nashville, TN – Three-time Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, and now author Lucinda Williams has released a new video for “Rock n Roll Heart,” the title track from her critically acclaimed new album Stories from a Rock n Roll Heart (Highway 20 Records/Thirty Tigers). The new clip marks the first time in over three decades that Williams has starred in one of her videos, the last being 1988’s “Passionate Kisses” from her highly revered album, Lucinda Williams (aka The Rough Trade Album). The video was directed by Neilson Hubbard and Joshua Britt.

Released on June 30th, Stories from a Rock n Roll Heart is Williams’ first album since suffering a stroke in 2020. The album received high praise from the media, including a feature segment on CBS Sunday Morning. Williams was the subject of major features in publications that include Rolling Stone, Billboard, Relix, The FADER, SPIN and many more.

Last week, Williams was named one of Forbes’ “50 over 50,” the third annual celebration of women making their greatest impact at age 50 and beyond. The list is produced in partnership with Mika Brzezinski of MSNBC’s Morning Joe and her Know Your Value initiative. Williams is featured in the “Lifestyle” category that includes Jamie Lee Curtis, Patti LaBelle, Annie Leibovitz, Katie Couric, Judy Blume, and many other prestigious authors, designers, CEOs, filmmakers, innovators, and influencers.

In April, Williams released her long-awaited memoir, Don’t Tell Anybody The Secrets I Told You (Crown, a division of Penguin Random House LLC). The memoir debuted at #5 on The New York Times Bestsellers and she was featured on the cover of The New York Times Sunday Styles. Williams was also featured at Vanity Fair, NPR All Things Considered, The Associated Press, Esquire and more, including a sit-down appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers in April.

My Next Read: “The Sporty One: My Life as a Spice Girl” by Melanie Chisholm

0

An intimate memoir from international pop star Melanie Chisholm–better known as Mel C. or Sporty Spice–chronicling her trajectory from small-town girl to overnight icon as part of the Spice Girls.

25 years ago, The Spice Girls, a girl band that began after five women answered an ad in the paper, released their first single. ‘Wannabe’ became a hit and from that moment and, almost overnight, Melanie Chisholm went from small town girl to Sporty Spice, part of one of the biggest music groups in history.

Beginning in her bedroom in the north-west of England dreaming of performing on stage, THE SPORTY ONE follows the meteoric rise of the Melanie and The Spice Girls, from the incredible highs of becoming one of the world’s most recognizable popstars – playing at Wembley, conquering the BRITs, closing the Olympics – to the difficult lows. For the first time ever, Melanie talks about the pressures of fame, the shaming and bullying she experienced, the struggles she has had with her body image and mental health, and the difficulty of finding yourself when the whole world knows your name.

THE SPORTY ONE is an incredible story of resilience, hope and how you can find your power.
