April Wine Songwriter Myles Goodwyn to be Inducted to Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame

0

In 2003, acclaimed songwriter and April Wine frontman Myles Goodwyn received the ECMA Lifetime Achievement Award for his impact on the music industry of Atlantic Canada. Exactly 20 years later, he’ll return to the East Coast Music Awards to accept his latest distinction as the newest Inductee to the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame (CSHF). Considered by many as one of Canada’s greatest rock n’ roll songwriters, the CSHF will celebrate Goodwyn’s catalogue of songs penned for April Wine, spanning more than five decades.

On May 4, the CSHF will present Goodwyn with the award at the ECMAs in Halifax, NS; and later this year, his name will be included in the permanent exhibit at the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame Museum in the National Music Centre in Calgary, as the organization commemorates 25 years of celebrating Canada’s greatest songs and songwriters.

The 35th Annual East Coast Music Awards Presented by Rogers will be broadcast across the country on selected community television stations including Rogers TV, and available to view online at ECMA.com and RogersTV.com. Announced performers include Jimmy Rankin, Nick Earle, Christine Campbell and Colin MacDonald; with friend, and Right Myself collaborator, Lennie Gallant presenting to Goodwyn. Tickets available at ECMA.com.

“To be inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, has been a wish of mine for many years. It is possibly the most significant award I’ve ever received. What has mattered most to me, for all my years in the business, was to be taken seriously as a songwriter,” says Myles Goodwyn.

Goodwyn, who penned songs for April Wine spanning more than five decades, will be inducted to the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame on May 4 at the ECMAs in Halifax.

Goodwyn gave his final live performance with April Wine on March 2nd, 2023, as the only remaining original member of the iconic rock group.

“After more than 50 years of touring and performing as the voice and songwriter behind April Wine, we’re thrilled to be able to induct Myles and his iconic body of work into the CSHF,” said Stan Meissner, Board Chairman. “On behalf of all music fans, we thank Myles for sharing his gift as a songwriter, singer, guitarist, and performer who has given us the soundtrack to a generation; and he’ll continue to inspire a new generation as the creative force behind the next evolution of April Wine.”

He founded April Wine in 1969 with long-time friend, Jim Henman, and Henman’s cousins David and Ritchie Henman in Nova Scotia. Less than a year later, the group moved to Montreal to sign a record deal with Aquarius Records, and embarked on a “Fast Train” to success.

Their first album was released in 1971, which included their first hit single Fast Train written by Goodwyn; followed by penned classics like Roller, I Wouldn’t Want to Lose Your Love, and I Like to Rock. Their album “The Whole World’s Goin’ Crazy” became the first Canadian album to sell over 100,000 copies.

Goodwyn’s songs ranged in styles from edgy rock to romantic ballads, from country to blues – and his subject matter was just as wide-ranging, encompassing piano classics such as Comin’ Right Down on Top of Me, Like a Lover, Like a Song and I Wouldn’t Want to Lose Your Love, and the environmental song Lady Run, Lady Hide.

Roller, is one of many April Wine classics written by Myles Goodwyn.

He also wasn’t afraid to tackle political topics in Some of These Children (bringing awareness to unmarked residential school graves), and 2022’s “For Ukraine”, which was written in support of the citizens of war-torn Ukraine, garnering him the SIFA Award for Best Social Impact Music/Art 2022.

As a hardworking master of his craft Goodwyn has said, “I worked diligently and tenaciously on becoming a good, consistent songwriter. To me it is the most important part of what I do. Always has been.”

April Wine disbanded in 1984, after releasing 22 studio and two live albums. They re-banded in 1993 and resumed touring, once again selling out shows continent-wide. In March 2009, April Wine was inducted into the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame and received the JUNO Lifetime Achievement Award. Goodwyn and April Wine were also inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2010 and have garnered two Félix Awards as well as several SOCAN Classic Awards.

Goodwyn will continue writing and producing for April Wine as the band continues to tour with his artistic involvement; and his third blues recording will be released in the summer of 2023.

Alice Cooper’s ‘School’s Out’ And ‘Killer’ To Be Released As Deluxe Editions On June 9

0

Alice Cooper was unstoppable during the 1970s when the band released four consecutive platinum albums and five Top 40 hits like “I’m Eighteen,” “School’s Out,” “No More Mr. Nice Guy,” and “Elected.” Rhino will reissue two of those platinum albums – Killer (1971) and School’s Out (1972) – with newly remastered sound, rare recordings, and previously unreleased live performances.

Both Deluxe Editions will be released on June 9 as 2-CD sets and 3-LP versions on 180-gram vinyl. KILLER (DELUXE EDITION) retails for $69.98 (LP) and $29.98 (CD). SCHOOL’S OUT (DELUXE EDITION) will be available for $89.98 (LP) and $29.98 (CD). Pre-orders are available now at Rhino.com.

A previously unreleased live version of “Be My Lover” from the upcoming SCHOOL’S OUT (DELUXE EDITION) is available today digitally. Listen now.

Released in 1971, Killer was the fourth studio album recorded by the founding quintet of singer Alice Cooper, lead guitarist Glen Buxton, rhythm guitarist/keyboardist Michael Bruce, bassist Dennis Dunaway, and drummer Neal Smith. Bob Ezrin produced all four of Alice Cooper’s platinum albums from the 1970s, including Killer and School’s Out.

KILLER (DELUXE EDITION) introduces a newly remastered version of the original release, which peaked at #21 on the Billboard albums chart. Along with the singles “Under My Wheels” and “Be My Lover,” the record also includes “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah,” “Desperado,” and the prog-rock-inspired epic “Halo Of Flies.” The bonus material features alternate takes for “You Drive Me Nervous,” “Under My Wheels,” and “Dead Babies.”

The collection also gives fans an unreleased live recording of the band’s performance at Mar Y Sol Pop Festival in Puerto Rico on April 2, 1972. Recorded a few months before the band returned to the studio to make School’s Out, the show previews “Public Animal #9” from the upcoming album. The band played most of Killer during the concert, including “You Drive Me Nervous,” “Under My Wheels,” and “Halo Of Flies.” They also tapped the group’s 1971 album, Love It to Death, for live versions of “Is It My Body?,” “Long Way To Go,” and the smash hit “I’m Eighteen.”

Shortly after the festival, the band released the title track from its follow-up album, School’s Out. The single was released several weeks ahead of the full album to ensure it hit radio airwaves before the school year ended. It worked. By the time school was out, the song was a hit, reaching #7 in the U.S. and #1 in the U.K.

SCHOOL’S OUT (DELUXE EDITION) begins with a newly remastered version of the 1972 original, which peaked at #2 on the albums chart. Essential tracks like “Luney Tune” and “Alma Mater” are joined by “Gutter Cat vs. The Jets.” The latter is an homage to West Side Story, a significant influence on the band. The song incorporates lyrics from “Jet Song” from the 1957 musical, which led to an unlikely songwriting credit for Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim on an Alice Cooper track.

The Deluxe Edition contains rarities like the single versions of “School’s Out” and “Gutter Cat vs. The Jets.” Two previously unreleased tracks are also included, an alternate version of “Alma Mater” and an early demo for “Elected,” a song that would appear in 1973 on the band’s first #1 album, Billion Dollar Babies.

Alice Cooper’s concert in Miami on May 27, 1972, adds even more unreleased music to the collection. The show was recorded a few weeks before the band entered the studio to record School’s Out. The live performance features standout versions of “Halo Of Flies,” “School’s Out,” and “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah,” a song that gives Cooper a chance to show off his impressive harmonica skills.

The vinyl versions for both Deluxe Edition recreate the original album sleeves down to the smallest detail. For Killer, that means a gatefold sleeve that opens to reveal a detachable 1972 calendar with a photo of Cooper in the gallows. The cover of School’s Out looks like a wooden school desk and opens to reveal the LP wrapped in a pair of panties. The band stopped including the underwear following a controversy as to whether or not they were flammable. Thankfully, the lacy unmentionables in the new Deluxe Edition are not a fire hazard.

Both sets come with booklets that include track-by-track comentary by band members and former Creem Magazine editor Jaan Uhelszki, plus liner notes by Bill Holdship, also a former Creem Magazine editor. In KILLER (DELUXE EDITION), Holdshipwrites: “Listening to Killer again after all these years to write these notes was rewarding because, like The Beatles and Elvis, it’s gratifying to realize I ended up ‘wasting’ my lfe on something that, even in retrospect, really was that great. Fifty years later, Killer remains a perfect – perfect! – rock ’n’ roll record.”

In addition to experiencing the unearthed concerts on thesetwo new deluxe editions, fans can also see Alice Cooper revisit School’s Out and Killer on an extensive tour spanning spring and summer. Beginning this weekend, the run of more than 40shows will bring him and his band all across the country, including dates with Def Leppard and Mötley Crüe, plus a month-long run with Rob Zombie, Ministry, and Filter for this year’s Freaks on Parade. Little Feat To Re-Release ‘Sailin’ Shoes’ And ‘Dixie Chicken’ Deluxe Editions

0

Two of Little Feat’s best – Sailin’ Shoes and Dixie Chicken – have been newly remastered for upcoming Deluxe Editions that will introduce unreleased live and studio recordings that capture peak Feat.

Rhino will release SAILIN’ SHOES (DELUXE EDITION) and DIXIE CHICKEN (DELUXE EDITION) on June 23. Each collection will be available in two different configurations, a 2-CD set for 3-LP 180-gram vinyl version.

Released in 1972, Sailin’ Shoes was the second studio album from the founding quartet of singer-guitarist Lowell George, drummer Richard Hayward, keyboard player Bill Payne, and bassist Roy Estrada. Ted Templeman produced the record, which was the first to feature artwork by illustrator Neon Park, who created covers for nearly all of Little Feat’s albums.

SAILIN’ SHOES (DELUXE EDITION) opens with a newly remastered version of the original album, which introduced signature tunes like “Easy To Slip,” the title track, and an updated version of “Willin’” a song that also appeared in 1971 on the band’s eponymous debut. Several outtakes from the album’s recording sessions make their debut on the Deluxe Edition, including alternate versions of “Cold, Cold, Cold,” “A Apolitical Blues,” and “Willin’.”

The magic that Little Feat conjured in concert takes center stage in the new set with a newly discovered and previously unreleased complete show recorded at the Palladium in Los Angeles on August 28, 1971. This live set marks the only multi-track recording in existence to feature the original lineup of the band. The performance features songs from both Sailin’ Shoes (“Tripe Face Boogie,” “Teenage Nervous Breakdown”) and Little Feat (“Hamburger Midnight,” “Snakes On Everything.”) The set also comes with illustrated liner notes written by acclaimed music journalist, David Fricke.

Dixie Chicken, the band’s third studio album, emerged in 1973 and introduced fans to Little Feat’s evolving sound and new line-up. The group’s shift toward New Orleans-style funk was accompanied by the arrival of three new members, guitarist Paul Barrere, percussionist Sam Clayton, and bassist Kenny Gradney (who replaced Estrada).

DIXIE CHICKEN (DELUXE EDITION) contains the newly remastered album, which features classics like “Two Trains,” “Fat Man In The Bathtub,” and the title track. Several unreleased session recordings debut in the new set, including alternate versions of “Roll Um Easy,” “On Your Way Down,” and “Juliette.” The unreleased live music was recorded at Paul’s Mall in Boston on March 1, 1973. They feature songs from Dixie Chicken (“Two Trains,” “Walkin’ All Night”) and the band’s earlier albums (“Willin’,” “Got No Shadow.”) The illustrated liner notes included in the collection were written by author Dennis McNally, who got his start as the Grateful Dead’s publicist.

Little Feat will celebrate these deluxe editions with “The Albums Tour” this fall, which will feature the band playing each album in its entirety across back-to-back nights at select venues (night one will be Sailin’ Shoes and night two will be Dixie Chicken). Preceding “The Album Tour,” the band is currently in the midst of their “Boogie Your Spring Away” tour, making their way across the East Coast in the coming days before making special appearances at the MerleFest in North Carolina April 27 and The Green River Festival on June 25 in Massachusetts. After a short break, Little Feat will hop back on the road for the “Boogie Your Summer Away” tour, kicking off July 12 in Atlanta and wrapping up summer dates at the Hot August Music Festival on August 19 in Maryland.

Pussy Riot’s Nadya Tolokonnikova Did a Ted Talk

0

Nadya Tolokonnikova, creator of the anti-Putin resistance group Pussy Riot, was named a top enemy of Russia for speaking out against Vladimir Putin’s dictatorship throughout the last decade. In this inspiring TED Talk, she tells the story of her imprisonment and exile, shares what motivates her resistance and delivers a powerful message to Putin himself.

For some of us, living courageously is a choice. For others, like our friends in Ukraine, this is not a choice – it is a matter of survival. Putin is embarrassed that Ukraine chose truth and democracy. russians are bombing hospitals, maternity wards, schools – raping & killing civilians and throwing their bodies in mass graves.

Putin, and all those who support him are dead inside and must be defeated.

While I’m here – I’d like to address Vladimir Putin directly – wanted criminal to wanted criminal:

The Kremlin walls have become your prison walls. You have already lost, and the world stands with the brave people of Ukraine.

When you are in your final hour, praying, know this:  that whoever you pray to is on our side. And whoever that is … she will not forgive your crimes against humanity.

Conceptual performance artist and activist Nadya Tolokonnikova is the creator of Pussy Riot, a global feminist protest art movement. Today, hundreds of people identify as a part of the Pussy Riot community.

She was sentenced in 2012 to 2 years’ imprisonment following an anti-Putin performance. Went through a hunger strike protesting savage prison conditions and ended up being sent far away to a Siberian penal colony, where she managed to maintain her artistic activity and with her prison punk band she made a tour around Siberian labor camps. Published a book “Read and riot: Pussy Riot’s guide to activism”.

Co-founder of independent news service and media outlet, Mediazona, she has spoken before the US Congress, British Parliament, European Parliament, appeared as herself on season 3 of House of Cards, performed at Banksy’s “Dismaland” exhibition.

Pussy Riot’s Punk-prayer was named by The Guardian among the best art pieces of the 21st century (“feminist, explicitly anti-Putin, protesting the banning of gay pride and the Orthodox church’s support of the president”), collaborated with Bansky on his Dismaland exhibition, endorsed by Marina Abramovic and Ai Weiwei, created an immersive experience in London’s Saatchi gallery.

Pussy Riot stands for gender fluidity, inclusivity, matriarchy, love, laughter, decentralization, anarchy, and anti-authoritarianism.

Tel Aviv Singer-Songwriter Tzvika Force Releases Emotional Ballad “I am moon”

0

Love can and will conquer all. It can be used as a guiding light towards a path for deeper connections with the people who are closest to you. This love-inspired creation is beautifully illustrated by the talented Israeli pianist and vocalist Tzvika Force on his latest single “I am moon.”

This powerful and energetic ballad by Tel Aviv-based Tzvika Lorber – aka Tzvika Force, paints an emotional, yet vulnerable piece about the desire and need for connectivity with someone else. “Summer came up too fast. Never hold it that way. I feel I can barely glow. But I believe that you can,” he begins. These words express a sense of uncertainty with the sudden change but strive for the feeling of comfort that comes when everything falls into place.

This is evident in the chorus when you hear Tzvika sing:

“Hold me now.
And save us now.
It’s never something you can’t see.
Hold me now.
And save us both.
And let me guide your way.”

Following the chorus, Tzvika transitions into a faster pace with deeper vocals piercing through, reminiscent of a Rufus Wainwright vibe singing “I am moon. My lightness is bare. Moon, My lightness is bare to you.”

The independent alternative songwriter describes the truth and meaning behind the creation of this masterpiece by saying, “It is a love song, a promise to our loved ones that we are there for them as the moon is always there in the heights to support, protect and light the way.”

Written on the piano and inspired by the 1000 Forms of Fear album by the talented Australian singer-songwriter – Sia, this song about the true meaning of love was recorded and produced at Tzvika’s home studio on his album “Mine,” released late last year.

Towards the end of the song, the edgy and creative storyteller can be heard pleading through his deep and electric vocals, about his partner “shining like a movie star,” emphasizing his emotional state and exposing his vulnerability with the expectation that he receives the same sentiments in return to help the relationship grow even further.

Conquering Rockabilly, Toronto’s Miss Tammy Darling Makes Sparks Fly in RnB/Soul Single “Electric Love”

When you start getting romantic feelings for someone, you might feel a surge of passion that comes from feeling a strong connection with them. Miss Tammy Darling can distinctively be found in the rockabilly world, but for “Electric Love,” she’s expressing these buzzy feelings of romance in authentically sliding into the RnB and Soul genres.

At the start of the song, smooth horns, and Darling’s passionate vocals slither into the listener’s ears. Once the first verse kicks in, so does the guitar. When combined with Darling’s vocals and the horns, the guitar’s casual strums seem to gently dance along. This enhances the song’s feel-good romance mood.

“There’s a strong pull in your direction,
Never felt this kinda connection.
Sparks start flying when you’re around.
I’m soaring way off the ground.
Surge of passion through every cell,
Open the windows, it’s hot as hell
Fireworks ignite right through my veins,
Lock me up, I’ll be your ball and chain.”

Of the song’s inspiration, Darling states, “With a love of old Hollywood and a fascination with the past, my original music is influenced by the iconic sounds of the 1950’s and 1960’s. I hope to revitalize these retro sounds, keeping them alive for future generations to enjoy.”

In fact, Darling’s song is almost like a modern version of Wanda Jackson’s “Cool Love.” While Jackson’s track displays the blues and country roots of rockabilly, Darling’s track uses jazz and country. A commonality that they both share is that they both unabashedly state their desires for an exciting and sensual romance.

Darling asserts this when she states, “I enjoy writing tunes that appeal to a multigenerational audience and encourage listeners to take a step back in time. Occasionally midcentury music presents outdated values. In sticking to the contemporary vintage community’s mantra, “vintage style, not vintage values,” I infuse these old styles with modern values and a fresh female perspective.

Miss Tammy Darling combines her love of vintage Hollywood movies and a retro 50’s and 60’s sound with modern sensibilities to introduce rockabilly to a new generation. She began performing covers of iconic artists such as Brenda Lee and Doris Day, most notably covering Gayla Peevy’s “I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas” in 2019.

Two years later, Darling took inspiration from being a cocktail enthusiast and released her first original song, “Mr. Bartender”, which resulted in Darryl Sterdan of Tinnitist to name her “Toronto’s Queen of Rockabilly”. In March 2023, Darling released her debut EP “Electric Love”.
