Spotify has announced the three artists that have been selected as their RADAR Canada

1

Spring has officially sprung and what better way to embrace the new season than by discovering three new up-and-coming Canadian artists? Well, Spotify has announced the three artists that have been selected as their RADAR Canada artists for April, May and June.

Each month, one of the artists will grace the cover of Spotify’s RADAR Canada playlist and have their songs included on the list. The three artists Spotify has chosen for Spring are:

Zeina (April)

    • Forging her own path, Montreal’s Zeina has been able to create her own world by blending her inspiration for early 2000s R&B and her Lebanese heritage to become the next superstar to represent the Arab and MENA culture. Speaking 4 languages including French, Arabic, Spanish, and English, Zeina displays her multilingual skills in her forthcoming single “Nasty” which has amassed over 1.5M+ streams on Spotify in the first month it was released. She also recently opened for Sainté as direct support in Montreal in collaboration with Montreality
    • K. Forest (May)
    • Brampton-born artist, K. Forest, first broke onto the scene in 2016 with his 11-track album Eyes of Taiga. Since then, the singer/songwriter has released 3 more projects, including his highly acclaimed 10-track album Welcome to the Wildfire back in 2021. K. Forest originally wrote, recorded, and released the track “guidance” on his Soundcloud before Travis Scott approached him, expressing an interest in the song.
    • Nemahsis (June)
    • Hailing from the outskirts of Ontario, Canada Nemahsis began paving the way for her musical career in 2021 with the release of her debut single ‘what if i took it off for you?’ The release of her debut EP ‘eleven achers’ in March 2022 defines so much of what she does as an artist; she weaves an intricate tapestry that tells the story of life as a young Muslim woman. Nemah went on to perform sold-out shows across Europe over the summer and kicked off 2023 with the release of ‘i wanna be your right hand’. Fresh off the release, Nemah embarked on a debut run of North American shows, which included sold-out appearances in Toronto, New York and Los Angeles. Her LA show is a personal highlight, with renowned recording artist Stevie Wonder in attendance.

Spotify’s RADAR program is grounded in supporting emerging artists from across the globe and by joining this acclaimed emerging artists program, fans will have the opportunity to learn more about the breakout artists with their “Clips” series and through short videos and editorial support on the official Spotify playlist. RADAR Canada has been running for 2.5 years.

Alt.Rockers Highwind Storm Back With Aggressive “Weighing You Down”

0

“Weighing You Down” is the lead single and the first track on Moose Jaw’s Highwind’s new six-song EP “Final Words,” a concept album of sorts that directly takes on the process and aftermath of death from the perspective of those left behind.

Read the song titles in order – “Weighing You Down”; “At What Cost”; “I’m Making Amends”, “I Feel Helpless”; “In Hospice”; “These are My Final Words”. In sequence, they tell a story and form a poem that contemplates the lives left to live once a life partner has passed.

Lyrically, it’s dark, but sonically it’s aggressive, with crunching guitars, driving beats by Troy Waggoner and bassist Eric Taylor, and vocals from Charlie Rysavy that adeptly express the pain, anguish and angst of the subject material. “Weighing You Down” sets the tone for the next four songs, while the final track slows things down to reflect on things never said.

The hard-driving tune starts out with soft strumming by singer/guitarist Rysavy, quickly joined by an accelerating Waggoner drum roll. The tension picks up and 14 seconds in, new lead guitarist Ehren Pfeifer unleashes a circular guitar riff that sets the tone for a frenzied aural emo-punk assault.

It’s a dark, meaningful song, painting a bleak image of a loved one at the bedside of a partner in failing health.

“You hold my hand so tight as if this could be the last time
Overheard you pacing around last night
Could you just go home? And come back….
Cause it feels like I’m weighing you down?
Cause it feels like you’re waiting me out.”

“Final Words” is the first release from the Prairie-based band since 2016’s masterful full-length album “Cellar Door.” That record was recorded by the original three-piece band live off the floor at Regina’s Blue Door Studios. “Cellar Door” went on to be chosen as one of Sask Music’s Best Albums of 2016.

A four-year hiatus followed, but the band finally regrouped in 2020 to write songs. Along the way they picked up their fourth member, lead guitarist and sound designer Pfeifer.

All of Pfeifer’s stinging lead guitar parts were recorded in his bedroom in Toronto. The other members of Highwind sent him the tracks last year and he recorded on top of them. Pfeifer had never played with the band before, and they didn’t know what they were getting until he was finished. Despite that fact one would never guess that’s the case, as he fits the band like a proverbial glove.

The video for the single, out now on YouTube, was completed in a similar way. Each of the members of Highwind filmed their parts individually and it was all cut together afterwards. Two more videos from the EP are expected to be completed soon.

Chase intentionally recorded his vocals last on “In Hospice” and “These Are My Final Words” to ensure his voice sounded more and more degraded over the course of the album. “These Are My Final Words” was recorded in one take late in the day, which is why he sounds exhausted, just as one would watching their partner taking a final breath.

The six tracks on “Final Words” leave the listener wanting more. And Highwind has more from the EP’s sessions, that they hope to release soon as their next release. With this collection, and with Pfeifer on board, they certainly live up to the 2014 words of Vancouver-based magazine Permanent Rain Press, which stated” that they “might be the best thing by far to come out of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan…the band is capable of being more than just your average punk band.”

Singer-Songwriter Doug MacNaughton Takes Us On A Reassuring Walk Through Grief In “So Lost Without You”

0

Loss can be wrenching, no matter who is no longer in our lives, and Brandon, MB-based singer-songwriter Doug MacNaughton provides reassurance and a salve in his new single “So Lost Without You” from his forthcoming album Old Enough To Know Better.

The song starts out shimmery, and then morphs into an introspective ’70s-tinged folk-pop ballad. The sadness is overlaid with a marching, sunny optimism as MacNaughton lays out his grief:

You were here for the best days of my life
Now you’re gone, I don’t know what to say
I lift my eyes, I just see darkness all around
The world was brighter in the days we stood
Together

He searches his heart for a way to keep going and finds a well of internal optimism. “Fear shouts – but love whispers and is heard,” he sings. “Fear doubts – but love whispers and I’m reassured.”

The corresponding music video shows MacNaughton wandering around a town alone, with flashbacks of him with walking around the very same town, but with a dog at his side. His feeling of lost searching is palpable as he meanders the streets in a daze. Finally, he ends up walking into a branch of the Humane Society, where he finds a new companion, a fluffy little pup to walk alongside again.

The song was simultaneously inspired by MacNaughton’s loss of his siblings when he was a young man, as well as the sadness that can come from losing a beloved pet.

“My brother was killed in a motorbike crash when I was 18, and my oldest sister died of cancer when I was 29,” MacNaughton says. “I wrote this song when I was 55 as a way of dealing with that loss. People are not always comfortable talking about that kind of tragedy, but not talking about it makes it more difficult. This is for Bill and Elspeth…”

Different types of loss are impossible to compare, but anyone who has experienced one loss can understand a little bit of someone else’s. “It’s also a song for anyone who has had their dog or cat pass away,” MacNaughton says. “It’s hard, but there will always be a piece of them in your heart.”

Doug MacNaughton grew up in Brandon, Manitoba, playing in the school band and singing in choirs, but what really sparked his interest in music was listening to Mike Oldfield’s 1973 album Tubular Bells – he loved that the same person played all the instruments. MacNaughton attended Brandon University, where he had to make the choice between being a tuba major or a voice major, and so he chose voice.

That led to an eclectic stage/concert career, which included singing a Frank Zappa tribute concert with a Montréal-based electronic music ensemble; a stint with Les Misérables; a summer at the Stratford Festival, some musicals, a couple of Shakespeare roles, an actor/musician production of Man of La Mancha; and some orchestra work and a few operas.
But the whole time, he still had his love of rock, jazz, prog, and other musical styles. He wrote his first songs in 2017 and started hanging around the Toronto indie-music and singer/songwriter scenes. Five years later, he recorded eight of his own songs, resulting in his album Old Enough To Know Better, slated for release this summer.

Boy George And Culture Club Announce ‘The Letting It Go Show’ 2023 Tour With Howard Jones And Berlin

1

Today, music icons Boy George and Culture Club announced their 2023 tour, The Letting It Go Show, featuring very special guests Howard Jones and BERLIN across all dates. The prolific band will be performing all the hits, including “Do You Really Want To Hurt Me,” ‘Karma Chameleon,’ and ‘Church of the Poisoned Mind,’ right up to their current releases.

Produced by Live Nation, the 25-city run comes fresh on the heels of Boy George and Culture Club wrapping up their sold-out Vegas shows. The Letting It Go Show kicks off on Thursday, July 13 in West Palm Beach, FL at iTHINK Financial Amphitheatre, with stops across North America in Atlanta, GA, Nashville, TN, Toronto, ON, Chicago, IL, Austin, TX and more before wrapping up on Saturday, August 20 in Concord, CA at Concord Pavilion.

Few new wave groups were as popular as Culture Club. During the early ’80s, the group racked up seven straight Top Ten hits in the U.K. and six Top Ten singles in the U.S. with their light, infectious pop-soul. Though their music was radio-ready, what brought the band stardom was Boy George, the group’s charismatic, cross-dressing lead singer. George dressed in flamboyant dresses and wore heavy makeup, creating a disarmingly androgynous appearance that created a sensation on early MTV. George also had a biting wit and frequently came up with cutting quips that won Culture Club heavy media exposure in both America and Britain.

By the time Culture Club’s second album Colour by Numbers was released in the fall of 1983, the band was the most popular pop/rock group in America and England. “Karma Chameleon” became a number one hit on both sides of the Atlantic, while the album reached number one in the U.K. and number two in the U.S. Throughout 1984, the group racked up hits, with “It’s a Miracle” and “Miss Me Blind” reaching the Top Ten. In the fall, the group returned with its third album, Waking Up with the House on Fire. While “The War Song” reached number two in the U.K., the album was a disappointment in America, stalling at platinum; its predecessor went quadruple platinum.

Following a brief tour in February, Culture Club went on hiatus for 1985, with Craig, Moss, and Hay pursuing extracurricular musical projects in the interim. Though their comeback single, “Move Away,” became a hit in April, its accompanying album From Luxury to Heartache stayed on the charts for only a few months.

George confirmed the group’s disbandment in the spring of 1987, and he began a solo career later that year. While his solo career produced several dance hits in Europe, he didn’t land an American hit until 1992, when his cover of Dave Berry’s “The Crying Game” was featured in the Academy Award-nominated film of the same name. In 1995, George published his autobiography, Take It Like a Man. Culture Club reunited in 1998, issuing the two-disc set VH1 Storytellers/Greatest Hits.

A new album, Don’t Mind If I Do, appeared in 1999, reaching 64 on the U.K. charts; it did not receive an American release. Culture Club next celebrated their 20th Anniversary with a 2002 concert at Royal Albert Hall.

2023 marks the 40-year anniversary of the release of Howard Jones’ “New Song,” the ebullient hit that kicked off his career. Howard Jones’ most recent album is DIALOGUE, which was released in September of last year. DIALOGUE is the third album in a trilogy of electronic releases from Jones with multi-media project ENGAGE coming out in 2015 and studio album TRANSFORM out in 2019. DIALOGUE garnered serious coverage in outlets such as Spin, Stereogum and more. Last summer’s headlining tour with his full band/electronic set-up, featuring special guest alternative music legend Midge received rave reviews. LA Weekly declared Jones, “…poignant and perfect” and “absolutely superb”.

Electronic music pioneer Howard Jones has been a constant presence on the international touring scene for the past four decades, playing live in a number of different configurations including intimate solo shows and dates with his full high-tech band set-up. He first burst upon the contemporary music scene in 1983, with his very English songwriting and pioneering synthesizers with “New Song”. His first two albums HUMAN’S LIB and DREAM INTO ACTION were worldwide hits. HUMAN’S LIB reached #1 in 1984 in the UK and featured the hits “New Song,” and “What Is Love?” In 1985, Jones released the follow-up, DREAM INTO ACTION, which quickly became a Top Ten Platinum album in the United States and featured the smashes: “Things Can Only Get Better,” “Life In One Day,” “No One Is To Blame,” and “Like To Get To Know You Well.”

Howard Jones has sold nearly 10 million albums worldwide and continues to make new music and tour the world. Jones has performed on NBC’s top-rated morning and nighttime shows respectively, Today and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. His ubiquitous hits can be heard in such high-profile television series and films such as “Stranger Things,” “Breaking Bad,” “Watchmen,” “The Carrie Diaries”, “Superstore” and “Bumblebee”.

BERLIN will forever be recognized as the American progenitor of electro-pop artistry with sensually appealing lyrics. Few bands emerging from the era of BERLIN have achieved as far-reaching and long-lasting an impact and, rarely, such a timeless array of musical grooves. The Los Angeles-based band made its first national impression with the provocative single “Sex (I’m A…)” from the platinum-selling debut EP Pleasure Victim in 1982. “The Metro” and “No More Words” were also chart toppers, but it was the unforgettable, intimate, and strikingly beautiful love song, “Take My Breath Away” that took the band to another level. The ballad’s defining role in the Tom Cruise film, Top Gun, helped solidify BERLIN’s everlasting place in American pop-culture. The song was a #1 international hit and received both the Golden Globe and Academy Award for “Best Original Song” in 1986.

BERLIN’s discography has yielded twelve gold and platinum album awards. The band—founded by Nunn, bassist John Crawford, and keyboard player David Diamond—made its everlasting place in American pop-culture. Nunn’s ongoing influence earned her the #11 spot on VH1.com’s “100 Greatest Women in Rock,” while, as an actress, she played leading roles in films including Katie: Portrait of a Centerfold with Kim Basinger, and Thank God It’s Friday with Jeff Goldblum and Debra Winger. Along with comedienne, Wendy Liebman, Nunn also previously hosted the critically acclaimed radio show Unbound with Terri Nunn on 88.5 FM KCSN Los Angeles.
