Snow Patrol Announce 20th Anniversary Edition Of ‘Final Straw’

0

Snow Patrol has announced details of a 20th Anniversary edition of their classic record Final Straw, with a previously unreleased demo version of their anthemic hit “Chocolate” out now. The album will be released digitally via UMe on March 31, with a special double vinyl edition following on August 4 to mark the record’s original release date 20 years on. The anniversary edition includes 23 additional tracks*, including never-before-heard demos, B-sides, live tracks from the band’s August 2004 show at London’s Somerset House, and a previously commercially unreleased track, “Tired.” Click HERE to preorder the 20th Anniversary LP of Final Straw.

“I still have days where I don’t believe much of the last 20 years,” writes Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody in extensive liner notes accompanying the release. “In the back of my mind, I’m still waiting for the tap on the shoulder and someone saying, ‘you’re not supposed to be here.’ In a lot of ways, it’s a gift we were given. We’ve never taken any of what happened after the release of this album for granted.” Alongside Gary’s recollections, the package also includes writings on Final Straw from Jo Whiley and Fiction Records MD Jim Chancellor.

Final Straw was Snow Patrol’s third album and their major label debut. Written and recorded during a make-or-break period for the quartet, it set them on the path to becoming one of the biggest British guitar groups of the 21st century. Their 2006 single “Chasing Cars,” taken from Final Straw’s follow-up “Eyes Open,” is one of the biggest songs of all time, a five-times platinum hit with streams of one billion on Spotify and three million combined sales.

Final Straw, though, is where everything began to fall in place for Snow Patrol. Propelled by the stirring ballad “Run,” which has over 127,000,000 Spotify plays, and urgent, hooky singalongs such as “Chocolate” and “Spitting Games,” Final Straw went on to sell over four million copies worldwide, inclusive of 1.8 million sales in the UK going six-times platinum in the process. Nothing would ever be the same for Snow Patrol after its release. Here’s to revisiting the record that changed everything.

DJ Jazzy Jeff will be joined by award-winning colleagues, and other surprise guests for live sessions and one-on-one feedback throughout the program.

“I’m excited to be launching this new program,” said DJ Jazzy Jeff. “It’s really important for me to pass down knowledge that I have acquired to the next generation of producers and Beatmakers. Giving the next generation a shot to make it in the music industry is special to me.”

The course will be available in two different tiers:

ROLLING PAPERS spawned the hugely successful hits “Black and Yellow,” “Roll Up,” and “No Sleep” and gave Wiz the platform to win the award for “Best New Artist” at the 2011 BET Awards and “Top New Artist” at the 2012 Billboard Music Awards. “Black and Yellow” also earned him his first two GRAMMY nods for “Best Rap Performance” and “Best Rap Song”. As a follow up to ROLLING PAPERS, Wiz Released O.N.I.F.C. in 2012. This album featured tracks “Work Hard, Play Hard” and “Remember You” featuring The Weeknd. Todd “Too $hort” Shaw is a multiplatinum hip-hop artist, songwriter and entrepreneur that hails from Oakland, California. Over the course of his illustrious career as an artist, $hort has cemented his legacy as a hip-hop heavyweight and pioneer of West Coast rap, having amassed six platinum albums and four gold certifications with smash songs like “Blow the Whistle,” “Shake That Monkey,” “The Ghetto,” “Gettin It” and more. With the release of his 22nd solo studio album (Ain’t Gone Do It) in December 2020, $hort earned the unique distinction of becoming the only active hip-hop artist to have released an album in five different decades, punctuating an already vast catalog that included acclaimed albums such as Life Is… Too Short, Short Dog’s in the House, Shorty the Pimp, Get In Where You Fit In, Cocktails, Gettin’ It (Album Number Ten), etc. He is also the only artist to have collaborated with Tupac, The Notorious B.I.G. and JAY-Z.

The cultural influence of groundbreaking American rapper, record producer, media personality, philanthropist, and entrepreneur WARREN G (born Warren Griffin III) remains as urgent today as his 1994, multi-platinum-selling smash “Regulate.” Recorded with childhood friend and iconic superstar Nate Dogg, the track would define the rap genre and a generation. For three decades, Griffin has sold eight to ten million records worldwide. Today, he is crafting a new narrative, by extending his reach into the culinary arts, inspired by his family history.

As a solo artist, Griffin signed to Def Jam Records, collaborating with such artists as MC Breed and 2Pac. His early career breakthrough was achieved in 1992 when his vocal collaboration with Mista Grimm on the track “Indo Smoke,” which appeared on the Poetic Justice soundtrack. His creative momentum continued with significant contributions to Dr. Dre’s iconic 1992 debut album, The Chronic, including sampling for “Nuthin’ but a G-Thang,” a track that would be distinguished by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as one of the “500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll.” In 2019, Griffin found inspiration from his family history, this time in the culinary arts, by launching Sniffin Griffins BBQ sauces and rubs. As the artist reaches 50, his achievements in crafting music to reflect the sound and poetry of a generation are without compare. Now, Griffin has emerged as the “hip hop pit master,” eager to share a lifestyle that personifies joy, family, and celebration.

Women played a central role in the development of rock & roll, beginning with early blues artists, like Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith, and gospel artist Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Spirited rhythm-and-blues singers – such as Ruth Brown, LaVern Baker, and rockabilly star Wanda Jackson added their creative talents to popular music through its explosive growth in the ‘50s. Girl groups, like the Shirelles and Supremes, and the Rock Hall’s first female Inductee Aretha Franklin dominated the charts in the ‘60s while Janis Joplin, Grace Slick and Joni Mitchell carried the torch into the ‘70s. Artists such as Joan Jett, Ann Wilson, Debbie Harry, Chrissie Hynde, The Go-Go’s, Patti Smith, and Stevie Nicks paved the way for women in the ‘80s and ‘90s with their music and style. And, blazing through the 21st century includes the incredible voices of St. Vincent, Janelle Monae, Lady Gaga, Beyonce, and new generations of trailblazers who were influenced by those before them.
