SPOTIFY NEWS: Stream On 2023 – New Home Feed, Smart Shuffle, Previews And More

0

Today, Spotify kicked off Stream On by doubling down on discovery, revealing a new, dynamic interface on mobile built for deeper discovery and more meaningful connections between artists and fans.

The new Spotify will roll out in waves beginning today, below is a snapshot of what to expect:

  • New Home Feed: Within the new Home experience on mobile, users can scroll purposefully through visual feeds for Music, Podcasts or Audiobooks to sample audio before diving in.  Once they find something they like, it’s just a quick tap to save or share, preview multiple songs from a playlist or album, read along with transcriptions for many episode picks, and even watch video podcasts to get more from every recommendation.
  • Feeds within Search: Within Search, users can scroll up or down to explore short Canvas clips from tracks from some of your favorite genres. Spotify is also bringing this to popular playlists like Discover Weekly, Release Radar, New Music Friday and RapCaviar – inviting users to quickly preview tracks on a playlist before diving in.
  • Smart Shuffle: Smart Shuffle is the evolution of Enhance – breathing new life into carefully curated playlists by shuffling tracks and adding new, perfectly tailored suggestions.
  • Podcast Autoplay: Just like with music, Spotify will now serve Autoplay for Podcasts — when a podcast ends, another episode will automatically start playing that fits the user’s tastes and is relevant.
  • DJ: These announcements also follow the recent Beta launch of DJ, a new personalized AI guide that knows you and your music taste so well that it can choose what to play for you. DJ can be found at the top of your Music Feed.

Lewis Capaldi Partners With Netflix For All Access Feature Length Music Documentary

1

Netflix and Global superstar Lewis Capaldi today announces a special, raw and honest feature length music documentary “Lewis Capaldi: How I’m Feeling Now”, in partnership with Netflix, BMG, & Pulse Films, executive produced by Independent Entertainment, BMG and Quickfire Films, set to be released globally on Netflix on April 5.

The documentary arrives ahead of his highly anticipated second album Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent – out May 19th on EMI Records/Universal Music Canada.

Directed by BAFTA winner Joe Pearlman (Harry Potter 20th Anniversary, After the Screaming Stops) this all-access film sees Lewis Capaldi at a pivotal moment in his career. At the heart of this film is the story of a young artist, returning to his roots after achieving unbelievable global success, attempting to reconnect with his old life and the family and friends he left behind.

Four years in the making and following 5 back-to-back sold out global headline tours, screaming fans and history making chart success, the singer-songwriter somewhat dizzyingly finds himself back at his parent’s house in Scotland to begin work on his highly-anticipated second album.

The film captures Capaldi’s defining year, struggling to balance the familiarity of home, normality and all he’s ever known, with life as one of the biggest stars on the planet, gleaning an intimate portrait of his unique character, hopes and fears in his own words. Digging beneath the popular clichés surrounding the most unlikely of popstars reveals a deeply thoughtful and self-reflective young man at a unique crossroads in his life as he carries the weight of trying to eclipse the success of his record-breaking debut album.

Lewis Capaldi said: “I’m pretty terrified for people to see this documentary if I’m quite honest, but I’m also really proud of it. I hope you enjoy it x.”

Sam Bridger, Head of Music Film at Pulse Films said: “This started out as a film about the process of creating the ‘difficult second album’, but ended up being an astonishingly unguarded portrait of the pressures of fame on young shoulders, exploring one of the great conversations of our age – mental health. Such unfiltered access to one of the biggest stars on the planet is testament to the bravery of Lewis and his team who invited us into their world, and the incredible trust and storytelling instincts of Director Joe Pearlman, Producer Alice Rhodes and the production team.’

Stuart Souter, BMG Vice President Films said: “This is much more than just a music film. With the support of his family, Lewis has opened up in a unique way. Just like his music, we are confident that it will connect with people around the world”.

The return of Lewis Capaldi has been phenomenal, rocketing straight to the top of the UK singles chart in September last year with comeback track “Forget Me”, which became Platinum-certified and smashed over 200 million streams globally. That quickly turned into a fourth UK number 1 with his stunning second single “Pointless”, an honour that equals the likes of Whitney Houston, Cher, Jay-Z, One Direction, Pharrell, Justin Timberlake and Usher.

For his highly anticipated second album, the idea has been simple but potent: to go in and do the exact same thing. No bells, whistles or starry featured vocalists, and no ruinously expensive stays in distant studios. Like it was on his debut, Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent is straight-up, full-force honesty.

Selling over 10 million copies worldwide, debut album Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent propelled Capaldi from bedroom musician to superstar. Few have seen a debut release quite like it, becoming the biggest selling UK album of 2019 & 2020, spawning two UK number 1 singles, bagging a few BRITs and a Grammy nomination, with one of those number 1’s becoming a smash hit on both sides of the globe in “Someone You Loved”, which recently became the UK’s most streamed song of ALL TIME.

Having recently sold out his 2023 UK arena tour in a matter of seconds, he will headline Reading & Leeds Festival in August, perform at Glastonbury Festival, as well as play his biggest headline summer shows to date to over 30,000 fans a night in Manchester, Edinburgh & Belfast. Lewis is currently making his way through a sold out European arena tour, before embarking on his biggest ever sold-out headline tour of North America this Spring. See his full touring schedule HERE.

If his first album made him an international star, with his second it’s nothing less than superstardom that beckons. With the public now getting an inside look into the life of a global superstar, the insatiable appetite for Capaldi burns as bright as ever.

FLÓÐ by Jónsi, Immersive Art Exhibition, Opens Next Week at National Nordic Museum

0

Jónsi (Jón Þór Birgisson), lead singer of the world-famous Icelandic post-rock band Sigur Rós, created an experiential artwork for the National Nordic Museum. FLÓÐ, “Flood” in Icelandic, opens on March 17th and runs through July 30th.
The exhibit is a captivating art experience inspired by the ocean and the dire realities of climate change. It features original music created by Jónsi and invites participants to let the room engage all their senses.

FLÓÐ is Jónsi’s first U.S. museum exhibition and represents the natural connection between sister cities, Seattle and Reykjavík. It immerses participants in an oceanic interpretation. Jónsi’s music is augmented by a choir composition and field recordings, simulating the experience of a wave traveling the length of the gallery while the scent of seaweed, tinctured and distilled by the artist, fills the air, and a delicate mist of droplets touch the skin.

When asked about the exhibit, Jónsi said “It is a spatial scent and sound sculpture, my main inspiration being the ocean. First, I was thinking about Reykjavík and Seattle, both being these coastal fishing cities and the ocean being this ominous and mysterious force playing a central part in our lives.”

Jónsi has also designed installations that replicate other natural phenomena, including white-out blizzard conditions and a volcanic eruption in his home country of Iceland.
There are numerous programs for visitors to gain a deeper understanding of FLÓÐ, including art classes and a silent disco with a Jónsi-curated playlist on July 28. A University of Washington professor gives a lightning-style lecture on the Viking Era before screening How to Train Your Dragon 2 – featuring Jónsi’s music – in the Museum’s final installment of the Fact & Fiction Film Series. In June, Icelandic wellness expert Jósa Goodlife will offer several sound bath experiences. For younger visitors, there will be opportunities to enjoy sensory play days on a monthly basis from April through June.

The Cranberries Celebrates The 30th Anniversary Of “Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We?” With Immersive Dolby Atmos Mixes

0

In celebration of the 30th anniversary of The Cranberries’ groundbreaking debut album, Island/UMe is releasing Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We? in Dolby ATMOS Music. “The Atmos remixes are a whole different listening experience for us,” says drummer Fergal Lawler. “It feels more like being onstage at a concert, being surrounded by the band. There are certain intricate parts that subtly pop out every now and then, causing you to feel more immersed in the songs.” Listen to Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We? in Dolby Atmos Music HERE.

Reflecting on the album’s history, Lawler recalls, “It’s hard to believe that it’s thirty years later. It seems like it wasn’t so long ago because we all have vivid memories of that wonderful time. We went through a few false starts before we finally got to begin recording with [producer] Stephen Street in a cozy little studio, Windmill Lane 2, just off Stephen’s Green in Dublin. We knew Steve was going to do a great job of capturing ‘The Cranberries sound’.”

Originally released on March 1, 1993, Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We? hit the No. 1 spot in both the UK and Ireland and has sold more than six million copies worldwide. Spawning two Top Ten singles – the debut lead single “Dreams” and its mainstream breakthrough follow-up “Linger” which cemented the band’s position within the rock world, the album highlighted the unique vocal stylings of Dolores O’Riordan (whose untimely passing in 2018 rocked the music industry). Combining Gaelic, Catholic, and indie vocal influences, O’Riordan coupled her relatable lyrics that captured the frustrations of late adolescence, giving these songs universal appeal. In the 30 years since its release, this carefully crafted debut has stood the test of time as a landmark album.

Snow Patrol Announce 20th Anniversary Edition Of ‘Final Straw’

0

Snow Patrol has announced details of a 20th Anniversary edition of their classic record Final Straw, with a previously unreleased demo version of their anthemic hit “Chocolate” out now. The album will be released digitally via UMe on March 31, with a special double vinyl edition following on August 4 to mark the record’s original release date 20 years on. The anniversary edition includes 23 additional tracks*, including never-before-heard demos, B-sides, live tracks from the band’s August 2004 show at London’s Somerset House, and a previously commercially unreleased track, “Tired.” Click HERE to preorder the 20th Anniversary LP of Final Straw.

“I still have days where I don’t believe much of the last 20 years,” writes Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody in extensive liner notes accompanying the release. “In the back of my mind, I’m still waiting for the tap on the shoulder and someone saying, ‘you’re not supposed to be here.’ In a lot of ways, it’s a gift we were given. We’ve never taken any of what happened after the release of this album for granted.” Alongside Gary’s recollections, the package also includes writings on Final Straw from Jo Whiley and Fiction Records MD Jim Chancellor.

Final Straw was Snow Patrol’s third album and their major label debut. Written and recorded during a make-or-break period for the quartet, it set them on the path to becoming one of the biggest British guitar groups of the 21st century. Their 2006 single “Chasing Cars,” taken from Final Straw’s follow-up “Eyes Open,” is one of the biggest songs of all time, a five-times platinum hit with streams of one billion on Spotify and three million combined sales.

Final Straw, though, is where everything began to fall in place for Snow Patrol. Propelled by the stirring ballad “Run,” which has over 127,000,000 Spotify plays, and urgent, hooky singalongs such as “Chocolate” and “Spitting Games,” Final Straw went on to sell over four million copies worldwide, inclusive of 1.8 million sales in the UK going six-times platinum in the process. Nothing would ever be the same for Snow Patrol after its release. Here’s to revisiting the record that changed everything.
