Winnipeg’s D2UR Is The Right Band For “Right Now”

0

D2UR (pronounced Detour) are following up their critically acclaimed 2020 single “Slippin’ Away” with a continuation tune, “Right Now.” Married duo Diane and Mike Isbister lead the group with vocals and guitar.

“During 2020, when the pandemic was at its peak, we hunkered down to write new songs. At the time, we latched onto a song now entitled “Slippin’ Away,” written about the pandemic and our way of life changing before our eyes,” D2UR said. “Right Now” is a post-pandemic song seeking the truth behind what happened and what caused the pandemic. We all search for answers and places to find them. Maybe one day we will find out.”

“Right Now
Look what is happening, Right Now
Do you hear me? Right Now
Right now
Can you help us?
Right Now….Right Now…..”

Diane and Mike mentioned, “The lyrics for the song were influenced by the continuation of the pandemic and the rules for conduct that had been set in place by the authorities. As the lyrics developed, we latched on to the idea of fixing it ‘Right Now!’”

“Right Now” is a rock venture complete with longing electric guitar licks. Diane’s leading vocals croon over light cowbell-esque sounds and a stable guitar pulse. Her unwavering rock vocals mesmerize the listener with feelings of curiosity. The drum beat shines behind Diane’s grungy, full vocal impressions, and the lower guitar octave matches the grit as you’re thrust into a full-on rock show.

Between the second verse and the chorus, Diane invites David Sikorski-Thorn’s electrifying guitar solo with a nudge from her powerhouse vocals. Diane shines with a profound sostenuto in the final chorus, ending the lead vocals on a quite literal high note. She backs off lead vocals for a few bars while emitting airy breaths, which back the guitar solo.

The song resolves with a choral chant from all vocals of the phrase “Right Now” and some high-energy guitar riffs.

Additional musicians involved in the production and creation of “Right Now” include Sikorski-Thorn on guitar and backing vocals, John Colburn on bass guitar, and Stephen Broadhurst on drums.

Three additional songs were written and recorded at the same time and will be released in the upcoming months: Live Again, Remember My Name, and Wasted Time. The band is set to continue recording another four songs immediately as well as rehearse for their own show at the Park Theatre in Winnipeg in the spring of 2023.

Danny Lamb & The Association Deliver A Message Of Hope In “Bigger Than Me”

0

Fueled by all the nuance that makes up our individualistic naivety, Niagara On The Lake, ON’s Danny Lamb & The Association deliver a powerful anthem paying homage to shameless idealists and dream chasers in their most recent single, “Bigger Than Me.”

Inspired by the self-discovery process that comes with a heart-wrenching coming of age story, “Bigger Than Me” is more of a proclamation of greatness than a musical production.

Danny Lamb & The Association sought out to create an up-lifting track, and the delivered on their promise. “Bigger Than Me” is rooted in Lamb’s struggles with Hydrocephalus – and his success as not only an ambassador of hope, but a breakthrough musician.

“When I was 18, I became the Young Ambassador of what was then known as the Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus Association of Ontario,” says Danny Lamb as he recounts his early activism years. “‘Bigger Than Me’ is the product of how my own personal story – and experiences – have shaped and continue to pave the way for those big dreams I had when I was younger, and now having an initiative A Song, A City helps those in need even more.”

“Bigger Than Me” reflects Danny Lambs ambitions while telling the story of a dreamer – a persistent one at that. Time after time, we watch the world take the light from those who have the courage to dream boldly. Lamb sought after a career in music when he was younger, but as his experiences in life have shaped his world view, he has changed course, hoping to use his platform and artistic expertise as a vessel for change.

“I’ve always looked up to artists who have used their platform/songs/voice to speak up, creating a space to address social issues and create more equity in the world.”

Danny Lamb is a singer/songwriter, producer, musician, activist, and humanitarian. Moved by the power of music, Lamb’s passion for activism combined with his knack for musical compositions gives him an uncanny ability to connect with listeners while urging them to be the best they can be.

Lamb finished his first arrangement in Recife, Brazil as a 16-year-old Rotary Exchange Student. Realizing he had tapped into something he was truly passionate about; he has been writing, touring, and releasing music ever since.

While the young breakthrough artist may seem green, he has amassed quite the CV – and audience. Lamb has shared the stage with artists such as Marianas Trench, Mark Lalama, Fefe Dobson, Michael Wainright, Tal Vaisman, Brian Melo, and many, many more. His music and talents have been featured in outlets such as Niagara Life Magazine, CHCH, Canadian Musician Magazine, CTV, and the BBC.

“Johnny Cash: The Redemption Of An American Icon” Exclusively In Theaters December 5,6 & 7

Fathom Events, Kingdom Story Company, WTA Media, and Harvest Ministries with Greg Laurie have partnered to release Johnny Cash: The Redemption of an American Icon” this fall.  Initially announced at CinemaCon this past spring, the documentary will be in theaters December 5, 6 & 7 only, and tickets are on sale now HERE.

Johnny Cash is an American icon who undoubtedly shaped the musical landscape. Behind the fame is the true story of a man who was haunted by his own inner demons, and through facing them, ultimately found an unshakable faith in God,” said producer Jon Erwin. “At Kingdom Story Company, we strive to bring inspiring true stories to screen. ‘Johnny Cash: The Redemption of an American Icon’ is one such story. We’re excited to share it with you in theaters this December.”

“I think of all the documentaries made about my dad, he’d be most excited about this one,” said John Carter Cash of the film.

Kingdom Story Company created the documentary with exclusive access to over 100 tapes that have never been heard before outside of the Cash family. Originally recorded for Cash’s autobiography, the tapes were provided with the blessings and involvement from John Carter Cash, the only child of Cash and June Carter Cash, and his sister, Joanne Cash “Johnny Cash: The Redemption of an American Icon” features John Carter CashSheryl CrowTim McGrawMarty StuartWynonna JuddJimmie AllenAlice CooperFranklin GrahamJoanne Cash YatesGreg Laurie, and many others.

Recounting a critical period in Cash’s life and career, the documentary takes place during the time of his most famous album “Man In Black” while the legend was stuck in a cycle of depression and drug addiction. The road to redemption for the iconic country star and his return to an “unshakeable faith” that would influence some of his most famous songs like “The Man Comes Around,” are at the core focus of the film.

“Here’s the great contradiction–who could be friends with Willie NelsonWaylon Jennings, and Billy Graham all at the same time? The answer, Johnny Cash,” said Pastor and Producer Greg Laurie of Harvest Ministries. “He was a contradiction at times, but he had a deep faith that he always returned to.” Laurie is also the author of a recent spiritual biography of Johnny Cash, and this is his second “American Icon” documentary, having released “Steve McQueen: American Icon” in 2017.

Wild Grey Ocean is streaming now, and was recorded during the original album sessions, held back for future release. Similarly to much of the material on the record, it’s a track that reflects moments and memories of Sam’s teenage years; Personal ruminations punctured by his distinctive guitar motif.

Seventeen Going Under was originally released on 8th October 2021. It debuted at number 1 in the UK on a wave of critical acclaim, and set up a tremendous twelve months for one of Britain’s best songwriters, winning Sam a second BRIT Award for Best Rock/Alternative Act, two NME Awards, a prestigious Ivor Novello Award for songwriting, and Sam’s first Mercury Prize nomination.

In June 2023, Sam headlines two nights at the 55,000+ capacity St. James’ Park in Newcastle. Both shows sold out instantly. New dates in Belfast and Dublin are also on sale now for next Summer.

Live From Finsbury Park” captures Sam’s scintillating sell-out performance in front of 45,000 fans earlier this Summer in London. As Sam’s biggest headline show to date, and straight off the back of his show-stealing performance at Glastonbury Festival, the Finsbury Park show paid testament to an incredible twelve months for an artist whose rise has been meteoric.

The album will be released as a standalone double coloured vinyl. It will also feature on a “Live Deluxe Edition” of Seventeen Going Under on double CD, including the B-sides and two new tracks.

FREE 2023 NXNE Artist Applications Are Now Open

0

North by Northeast (NXNE) opens its free, 2023 artist applications today! NXNE continues its commitment to inclusion as Canada’s leading annual festival of emerging music by having no applications fees to perform for the second year in a row.

“We had thousands of bands apply — and hundreds play — from diverse economic and social backgrounds in 2022 when we eliminated the application fees, and NXNE was richer for it,” says NXNE president Michael Hollett.

The festival is open to most genres of music and is committed to diversity and gender equity in its  programming decisions.

“We are certain we received a much broader range of submissions because of our no-fee-to-apply policy,” says Hollett. “A wide range of genres and economic backgrounds were represented in our applications. And, as a result, NXNE is able to provide a much more accurate snapshot of the emerging talent in this country right now.

“In addition, we will keep the cost of attending the festival low — full-festival pass was only 20 bucks last year — thereby helping ensure these bands have full venues when they come to Toronto to play. We remain committed to creating the best possible experience for performers at NXNE.”

Links to the free NXNE Artists’ Application Form is now live on the Festival’s website, nxne.com.

The 2023 festival dates are June 13 through 17. NXNE was launched in 1995.

Roots Band Rusty Creek Release New Single “Hello Old Friend” In Memory Of A Past Buddy

0

Rusty Creek’s latest single “Hello Old Friend” is an unforgettable dedication to an old friend who influenced the band as a percussionist and songwriter. The roots four-piece combined their original style of country blues, western swing, and Cajun with some traditional South African sounds to commemorate their friend who grew up in Cape Town.

“He was my great friend who I miss so much,” says Rusty Creek lead vocalist and guitarist Alex Deeth. “When we recorded this song, we used different instruments on it some from South Africa and we captured the kind of rhythm that we knew Erich would have played. We think he would dig the Groove.”

This isn’t a sad ballad, but more of a celebration of life. And when it is mixed with the multiple stringed instruments Rusty Creek are known for it makes for an original piece of music their old friend would likely be proud of.

“Hello Old Friend” is the latest single from Rusty Creek’s album The Road of Life, released in June, 2022. With influences from all over the music world, the band’s most recent release is described as Roots Re-Mastered while the songs range from a stomping party to reflective storytelling.

Rusty Creek is a collection of lifelong musicians Alex Deeth, Peter Callaway, Lee Stephens, and Rob Cooper who have all had a variety of success in the music industry since the 1960s. Their experience makes for a well-polished collection of roots music that you could hear at any pub from coast-to-coast.

Van Morrison’s New Album ‘Moving On Skiffle’ To Be Released On March 10, 2023

0

It should come as no surprise that Van Morrison has made an album inspired by skiffle. Van Morrison’s love of skiffle dates back to his childhood. He would hang out at the famed Belfast record store Atlantic Records, where he’d hear early 20th century folk, blues and jazz from the likes of Lead Belly and Jelly Roll Morton. So when he heard Lonnie Donegan’s take on ‘Rock Island Line’ he intuitively understood the music he was creating. Before long, Van Morrison was playing with a skiffle band in school.

Several decades on, Van Morrison now revisits his love of the genre with his new album Moving On Skiffle, which will be released on 10th March 2023. He introduces the album by sharing its lead single “Streamline Train”.

Moving On Skiffle finds him taking a homemade style that exploded across Britain in the mid-1950s and infusing it with a level of sophistication and soulfulness that it didn’t always possess the first time around. The 23-track album goes to the heart of the music Van Morrison has inhabited ever since he was six years old, hanging out in the smoky confines of Belfast’s Atlantic Records. It also contains songs that underline, in their messages on the importance of freedom and living on your own terms, his lifetime philosophy.

Van Morrison says, “I was still in school when I performed with a skiffle band – a couple of guitars, washboard, tea-chest bass. I was already familiar with Lead Belly’s recordings so when I heard Lonnie Donegan’s version of ‘Rock Island Line’ I intuitively understood what he was creating, I knew that it was what I wanted to do. It was like an explosion. This record retranslates songs from that era.

Chas McDevitt’s book is where to start when it comes to the history of skiffle. From the very beginning with Lead Belly and the jug bands laying the foundations through to Lonnie Donegan’s influence, and Chas McDevitt’s skiffle group, it’s all in there.”

For the most part, Van Morrison plays these timeless songs straight. Several of them feature his own arrangements, while select others feature his own characteristic lyrical twists. The ever-rebellious Morrison has changed the title of ‘Mama Don’t Allow’, recorded by both the Memphis Jug Band and the Chicago blues man Tampa Red in the late 1920s, to ‘Gov Don’t Allow’, a nod to his fight against the rise of government interference in our daily lives. And the gospel standard ‘This Little Light of Mine’, a key anthem of the Civil Rights movement in ‘60s America, is transformed into the rollicking, upbeat ‘This Loving Light of Mine’.

Opening track ‘Freight Train’ is an immediate highlight, a song which was originally written by Elizabeth Cotten and then recorded by both Peggy Seeger and Chas McDevitt. Van Morrison has given it as a sophisticated jazz arrangement complete with rollicking organ, close harmony vocals and some new words. Elsewhere, ‘Wish I Was An Apple On A True’ is given wonderful warmth, completed by jaunty washboard and treacle-rich vocal harmonies. ‘Gypsy Davey’ remains timeless, while Van Morrison’s powerful vocal and impassioned sax complement the bluesy guitar on ‘Greenback Dollar’. The album closes with ‘Green Rocky Road’, a plaintive folk gem and an ode to the troubadour life that was made famous by Fred Neil and Dave Van Ronk, and featured in the film ‘Inside Llewyn Davis’.

Van Morrison launches the album by releasing its lead single ‘Streamline Train’. Written in the 1930s by the Mississippi bluesman Red Nelson, the song was popularised when The Vipers Skiffle Group took it into the UK singles chart in 1957. This new take gives it a richer and more robust sound, its initial rhythm rollicking like a cross-country train before being illuminated by Van Morrison’s husky, cultured soul. It is further enlivened by gospel-style backing vocals and a rousing Hammond organ solo.

Key contributors on the album include Dave Keary (guitars), Pete Hurley (bass), Colin Griffin (drums) and Sticky Wicket (washboard). Current Brit folk favourite Seth Lakeman also contributes fiddle to five songs.

Today Van Morrison also announces details of some special intimate album launch shows at The Stables, Milton Keynes (March 13th, 14th and 15th) and Whitla Hall, Belfast (April 6th and 7th). Fans who pre-order the album here by 5pm on Monday 31st October will receive access to a ticket pre-sale, which opens at 10am on Wednesday 2nd November. The pre-sale remains live until tickets go on general sale at 10am from Friday 4th November.

Rihanna, the global icon, designer, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and the top-selling digital singles artist of all time – makes her highly-anticipated return to the airwaves this Friday with “Lift Me Up,” the lead single from the upcoming Black Panther: Wakanda Forever original soundtrack.

“Lift Me Up” was written as a tribute to the extraordinary life and legacy of Chadwick Boseman by Tems, Oscar winner Ludwig Göransson, Rihanna and Ryan Coogler. The song was recorded in five countries and was produced by Göransson.

“After speaking with Ryan and hearing his direction for the film and the song, I wanted to write something that portrays a warm embrace from all the people that I’ve lost in my life. I tried to imagine what it would feel like if I could sing to them now and express how much I miss them,” said Tems. “Rihanna has been an inspiration to me so hearing her convey this song is a great honor.”

In Marvel Studios’ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – one of the most highly anticipated film events of the year – Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett), Shuri (Letitia Wright), M’Baku (Winston Duke), Okoye (Danai Gurira) and the Dora Milaje (including Florence Kasumba) fight to protect their nation from intervening world powers in the wake of King T’Challa’s death.
