“Life Moves Pretty Fast: The John Hughes Mixtapes” Gets Released On November 11

0

Demon Music group in conjunction with the Hughes family are proud to present the first official compilation of music from the movies of legendary filmmaker John Hughes, covering the classic eighties period 1983 – 1989, and will be released on November 11, 2022.

For anyone growing up in the 1980s, the films of John Hughes are some of the most iconic of the decade and have created a lasting cultural impact still felt and referenced across TV, film and music. As well as the characters and stories created in these iconic movies, what made John Hughes’ movies different from the rest was the symbiotic relationship between scene and music. Whether Cameron Frye staring at the painting in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off set to The Dream Academy’s “Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want (Instrumental)”, Duckie and Andie from Pretty In Pink at prom set to Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark’s “If You Leave”, or even Neal and Del’s classic “Those aren’t pillows” scene from Planes, Trains and Automobiles set to Emmylou Harris’ “Back In Baby’s Arms”.

“Music was a huge part of filmmaking for him, it was a thing he seemed to like the most.” Matthew Broderick

Curated by John Hughes’ music supervisor Tarquin Gotch, this Limited Deluxe Edition 4CD boxset includes 74 tracks from the movies National Lampoon’s Vacation, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Weird Science, Pretty In Pink, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Some Kind Of Wonderful, Planes, Trains And Automobiles, She’s Having A Baby, The Great Outdoors and Uncle Buck. It also includes a 14 track cassette, and re-issue of the 7” single “Beat City” / “I’m Afraid” originally distributed to the fan club mailing list upon the release of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

“Back when we were working on these movie soundtracks, the best way to send music around the world was the cassette, by Fedex. We sent John cassettes of newly released music, of demos, of just finished mixes (and in return he would send VHS videos of the scenes that needed music).” Tarquin Gotch

The films of John Hughes spawned many classic tracks, some licensed for the films, some commission specifically, and many going on to become huge international hits from acts such as Simple Minds, Kate Bush, Furniture, Yello, and The Psychedelic Furs.

“It serves as a reminder not just to the musicians he championed in the 1980s, but to how intensely his search for music expanded beyond this era. Until his final days, he was still collecting outrageous amounts of music from around the world, galaxies removed from the New Romantic and new wave sounds that, to many, still define him.” James Hughes

The 4CD booklet includes memories from Matthew Broderick, James Hughes, Tarquin Gotch, Ron Payne, plus track-by-track sleeve notes.

“John said he only made movies so he could choose what music to put in them, so as his success at the Box Office grew, and thus his power with the studios, the number of tracks in his films, by up and coming UK bands, steadily grew.” Tarquin Gotch

BRASS CAMEL Mash Genres with Whirling Maelstrom of Sound Across Debut Single, “Easy”

0

Supersonic forces assemble like musical avengers to unify the grittiness of rock, the uptempo complexity of big band, and the sophistication of jazz, forming a whirling maelstrom of sound all in Brass Camel’s genre-defying debut single, “Easy.”

Answering the question of what Kamasi Washington would sound like if he played for Dream Theater, Vancouver, Canada’s Brass Camel is a tight musical collective determined to supply audiences with a new harmonic experience that transcends the traditional confines of music. Brass Camel is looking to change the game with their revelatory debut album due out later this year.

Channeling a signature blend of blues, funk, and 70s prog rock, Brass Camel’s grasp of rhythmic texture and song composition create a daring synthesis of musical energy that turns genre conventions on their head. A dash of Queen, a sprinkle of Parliament-Funkadelic, and a splash of Rush are infused to create an infectious cocktail of unforgettable sound encapsulating Brass Camel’s vision for “Easy.”

Refined psychedelia is the basis of Brass Camel’s aesthetic, translating not only through their sound but also in the lyrics, which tell a tale of the languishing we sometimes feel when navigating the world and our place within it.

Recorded at the historic Afterlife Studios in Vancouver, Canada, Brass Camel laid down their tracks while absorbing the majesty of the legendary recordings that have graced the studio’s past, such as Diana Ross and The Supremes and Led Zeppelin. After hammering out an album’s worth of material at the beginning of this year, the songs were sent to award-winning producer Ben Kaplan (Mother Mother, Rare Americans) to ensure the finishing touches brought the music together.

Brass Camel was founded in 2018 as the brainchild of renaissance musician Daniel Sveinson. Once dubbed “The Rock and Roll Kid,” Sveinson has been gracing stages since he was ten years old and was the subject of the documentary film of the same name. Playing with some of the most legendary stage performers who ever lived, including Les Paul, Sveinson has been an accomplished musician looking to bring his unique harmonic style to the world through the raw energy of Brass Camel. Their electrifying debut album will shatter the earth when it lands later this year on September 9th.

Power-Pop Rockers The Scary Loud Go Anti-Establishment with Electrifying “No Need School”

0

Toronto-based power pop band The Scary Loud split the earth with their heart-pounding song about exposing the redundancies and weaknesses of the education system on their electrifying new single, “No Need School.”

An outright rejection of the established order, “No Need School” is a visceral interpretation by The Scary Loud of the failures of government-run learning institutions. They are the latest in a long line of artists who have criticized the established educational order, such as Alice Cooper and Pink Floyd — while lending a bend towards going your own way, frontman, vocalist and guitarist Scotty Komer (producer; Silverstein, Protest the Hero, Zach Oliver) reveals.

“I wrote the song to be a bit of a ‘follow your dreams’ and ‘don’t listen to what you’re told is the proper path to a future’ kind of message,” he shares.

As a rush of sound hits the ears, The Scary Loud makes an unmistakable impression with top-notch production quality and a sonic intensity that fills any room. Make no mistake: this is a big fuzzy guitar band that builds on a foundation of vintage guitar amps to a loud, punishing rock sound; heavy drum and bass performances merge to form the gritty backbone of the band, while refined guitar riffs and soaring vocals propel The Scary Loud into the musical stratosphere.

All of the rhythmic composition within “No Need School” serves to convey the message and hit listeners with hard truths about the tedious reality of school systems. The song also goes into how institutions negatively affect the perception of students well after they leave the classroom.

Founded by Komer, The Scary Loud is comprised of various members of Canadian punk and hardcore bands such as Boys Night Out, The Pettit Project, Love You To Death, and Twin Rivals. The rhythm section is provided by drummer Sean Balestri and bassist Connor Lovat-Fraser, while lead guitarist Joe Baldasio rips his axe to shreds. This eclectic group of artists forms an act greater than the sum of their parts and is a harmonic force with a bright future.

Freddie Mercury’s Isolated Vocals For Queen’s “Love Of My Life”

Written by Freddie Mercury, Queen’s Love of My Life is from their 1975 album A Night at the Opera, although it’s their live album Live Killers’ version of the song that reached number 1 in the singles chart in Argentina and Brazil, and stayed in the charts in both countries for an entire year.

My Next Read: “Long Train Runnin’: Our Story of The Doobie Brothers” by Pat Simmons and Tom Johnston

0

For the first time, the incredible true story of the legendary band, The Doobie Brothers, written by founding members Pat Simmons and Tom Johnston.

Only a very few rock bands have had the longevity, success, and drama of The Doobie Brothers. Born out of late 1960s NorCal, and led by Pat Simmons and Tom Johnston, they stood alongside their contemporaries The Grateful Dead, The Allman Brothers, and many others as an iconic American rock band. The train was rolling along, hits were flowing like wine, and arenas were packed with fans who wanted to see them live…then Tom Johnston, the band’s front man and lead guitarist, became ill and had to leave.

The Doobies’ train came to a screeching halt. All of a sudden the band started contemplating the end of the road only seven years into their career, just as things were taking off. But Pat Simmons made sure they were far from the end and began the process of keeping the band together through most of the next decade.

A soul-steeped backup singer for Steely Dan named Michael McDonald took a shot at singing some of the Doobies’ songs on tour, and all of a sudden a new chapter in the Doobie Brothers’ story began. The band expanded their sound and had even more hits with their new front addition. Tom recovered from his health issues, but the band had moved on. When it came time for a reunion concert in the ’80s, Tom got the call and was back in the mix. Led once again by Pat and Tom, The Doobie Brothers have been touring ever since and maintain a massive fan base the world over.

Never before have Pat and Tom shared their story, in their own words. In Long Train Runnin’ they’ll change that.

The Cure Announce “Wish” 30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition

0

Wish was The Cure’s 9th studio album, released on April 21, 1992. It became the band’s best-selling album, reaching #1 in the UK and #2 in the US, where it was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Alternative Music Album category. The album yielded three hit singles, “High” in March 1992 – which reached #8 in the UK – the evergreen “Friday I’m In Love” in May 1992 and “A Letter To Elise,” which was released in October 1992. That year’s Wish tour would be the Cure’s most extensive, with 111 shows in 21 countries.

The new deluxe 3CD 45-track edition of Wish includes 24 previously unreleased tracks & four that are new to CD and digital.

CD1 contains the original Wish album, newly remastered by Robert Smith and Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios. The second disc features 21 previously unreleased demos, including four studio vocal demos from 1990 and 17 instrumental demos from 1991, nine of which are previously unreleased songs. The third CD in the set features the four tracks from the mail-order-only cassette Lost Wishes released in 1993, which have never appeared on CD or digitally. “Uyea Sound” from that cassette can be heard as a digital single now.

Also included are the previously unreleased song “A Wendy Band” from the 1992 Manor Studio sessions, a previously unheard mix of the epic live favorite “From The Edge Of The Deep Green Sea,” as well as five rare 12-inch mixes. Finally, closing the set is an unheard live version of “End” from Paris Bercy in October 1992

The prolific period of recording Wish began with demo sessions at The Live House in Cornwall and continued at Farmyard Studios in the Cotswolds. “We got around forty songs put down during those two sessions,” recalls Robert Smith, “we were on fire!”

On arrival at The Manor, a residential studio in Oxfordshire, in September 1991, the band all bought bicycles. Robert Smith, “There was a pub down the nearby canal path, and most early evenings we’d cycle down there for a ‘livener’ or two. I was the only one ‘un-cool’ enough to have a bike with lights, so I was always at the back on the way there and always at the front on the way back… I still can’t believe we never ended up in the water.”

From the start of the recording, Smith had a clear vision of what Wish should be. “The overall sound was in my head from the start. We used a pretty small palette of sounds, as we did with Disintegration, but managed to create a lot of different kinds of songs with it. I think Kiss Me was more of a reference than Disintegration.”

Listening back to the album in 2022, Smith has said, “There’s a side to the album which I had kind of forgotten, a very gentle, yearning thing which is quite beautiful. Trust is one of the best things we’ve ever done, I think, it’s played with great feeling, and To Wish Impossible Things is another gorgeous, melancholic piece… in fact it could well be my favourite song on the record.”

When Wish was completed, Smith felt that they had achieved everything they had set out to do, but there was a glitch. “In the studio control room, it all sounded excellent, but I got too busy sorting out our upcoming concerts to properly oversee the mastering. It was too late to do anything about it; the album was out, and we were off around the world again. It has really bugged for me for a very long time.” Remastering the album earlier this year has finally given Smith the chance to address this “It has taken 30 years, but finally, finally, my Wish has come true.”

The Cure is undertaking a 44-date European Tour starting in October and ending with eight shows in the UK in December.

Behind The Scenes In Creating Daft Punk’s ‘Around the World’ Music Video

0

Daft Punk’s “Around the World” has just three words, the title alone, and it’s repeated 144 times. That didn’t stop it from being a club hit around the world and reached number one on the dance charts in Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States, with a video that is visually stunning. They just released the making of the video and you can watch it below:

…and here’s the original.

My Next Read: “Paper Cuts: How I Destroyed the British Music Press and Other Misadventures” by Ted Kessler

0

PAPER CUTS is the inside story of the slow death of the British music press. But it’s also a love letter to it, the tale of how music magazines saved one man’s life. Ted Kessler left home and school around his seventeenth birthday, determined ‘to be someone who listened to music professionally’. That dream appeared forlorn when he was later arrested for theft behind the counter of the record shop he managed during acid house’s long hot summer of love. Paper Cuts tells how Kessler found redemption through music and writing and takes us on a journey alongside the stars he interviewed and the work-place dramas he navigated as a senior staffer at NME through the boom-time ’90s and on to the monthly Q in 2004, where he worked for sixteen years before it folded with him at its helm as editor in 2020.

We travel in time alongside musical heroes Paul Weller, Kevin Rowland, Mark E Smith, and to Cuba twice, first with Shaun Ryder and Bez, then with Manic Street Preachers. We spend long, mad nights out with Oasis and The Strokes, quality time with Jeff Buckley and Florence Welch, and watch Radiohead deliver cold revenge upon Kessler in public. A story about love and death, about what it’s like when a music writer shacks up with a conflict of interest, and what happens when your younger brother starts appearing on the cover of the magazines you work for, this is the memoir of “a delinquent doofus” whose life was both rescued and defined by music magazines.
