Jim West, founder and president of legendary Montreal based record label Justin Time Records has been appointed a Member of the Order Of Canada for his contributions to the Canadian recording industry, and for supporting and championing our country’s talent.
The music industry veteran began his career in the 1970s working as road manager for Mahogany Rush. West went on to found Justin Time Records in 1983 after hearing jazz pianist, composer and arranger Oliver Jones, OC, QC performing at Montreal jazz club ‘Biddle’s’. His was the first release on the label which became home to many incredible musicians and features recordings by Ranee Lee, Diana Krall, Oscar Peterson, the Montreal Jubilation Gospel Choir, Bryan Lee, Lorraine Klaasen, Halie Loren, David Murray, Carol Welsman and hundreds of other Canadian and internationally known artists. He transformed the landscape of the Canadian Music Industry by elevating not just the jazz genre but as a champion of Canadian arts and culture overall and his strong belief and support of the outstanding talent this country has to offer. He has been deeply involved with many music business associations over the years and applies the same forthright attitude and passion to his charitable activities as well.

In 1980, an intrepid young band from Burlington made “Spoons” a different kind of household word… The Spoons — still featuring the original members Gord Deppe and Sandy Horne — made their mark with hits including “Nova Heart,” “Romantic Traffic,” “Old Emotions,” and “Tell No Lies,” and their album Arias & Symphonies would be named one of the 20 Most Influential Albums of The 80s by the Chart Magazine.
Now The Spoons are coming home to the Burlington Performing Arts Center to help in the fight against mental health stigma by taking part in ‘The Long Road Back.’ Presented by award-winning broadcaster Ted Michaels and Titan Productions, the event will take place Wednesday, September 28th in support of the Canadian Mental Health Association’s Halton Region Branch and tickets are available here.
“Our mental health may well be one of the biggest casualties of the pandemic,” Deppe says. “We’ve seen it affect those around us — from the ones we love, to those who have fought hard to keep us safe.
“We need to join together and fight this other, ‘silent pandemic’ at a time when we need each other more than ever, and we are so honoured to return to our hometown to be part of this very important night.”
Hosted by long-time broadcaster Ted Michaels, the event is a culmination of years of work, he reveals. In October 2014, he created and hosted a new radio show called #WellnessWednesdays dealing with mental health; the series has since won a National Champions of Mental Health Award, presented by the Governor General.
“As someone who suffers from anxiety, I wanted to share my story because many people suffer in silence and don’t know where to turn,” Michaels shares. “Guests on my show all shared stories of the fear and anxiety that COVID caused, and the problems that remain; people need to know those feelings are common and there is help out there.
“It’s the start of ‘The Long Road Back’ to any sense of normalcy as we know it, and I look forward to seeing everyone there.”
Also featured at this event will be several special guests, including Michelle Titian of the Drive Foundation; an advocate of mental health awareness and solutions along with being a talented singer/songwriter in her own right, Titian is about to tour both as a panelist and performing artist through Europe in August/September to spread the word about recovery and healing through music.
Marshall Potts — who had recent success with airplay in the UK on his latest album The Storm and is also heading out on tour across Ontario and Quebec this October — will also be lending their support for this important event.
‘The Long Road Back’ is in support of the Canadian Mental Health Association’s Halton Branch.
“During the pandemic, many people came to experience for themselves the key challenges of mental health issues like isolation, loss of purpose, a thinning of social networks, and unexplainable feelings,” CMHA Halton CEO Rashaad Vahed says. “For the first time, many people felt a brush with their own mental health stresses.
“Ted has been an incredible advocate in bringing greater attention to wellness and mental health, and we are grateful to him for supporting our community’s ‘Long Road Back’ to wellness.”
‘The Long Road Back’ in support of CMHA Halton Region Branch is hosted by Ted Michaels and features The Spoons, Michelle Titian, and Marshall Potts.
It takes place Wednesday, September 28th. Tickets at $69.50 and are available now for purchase at the Burlington Performing Arts Center (440 Locust Street, Burlington, ON) or online at the link above.

July 6, 2023 – London – BST Hyde Park
July 8, 2023 – London – BST Hyde Park
European dates for the 2023 international tour were announced in May and over 1.2 million tickets have already been purchased across the continent, with many cities adding second or third stadium shows due to popular demand. At the conclusion of their European run, Springsteen and The E Street Band will begin a second to-be-announced North American tour leg in August.
Springsteen and The E Street Band’s most recent studio album, 2020’s ‘Letter To You’ (Columbia Records), marked their first time recording live together in decades and debuted at #1 in eleven countries. Their most recent tour, The River Tour in 2016-2017, was named 2016’s top global tour by both Billboard and Pollstar.
English singer/songwriter Beth Orton shares “Forever Young” today, a new preview from her first LP in six years and Partisan Records debut Weather Alive, out September 23rd. “Forever Young” is an engrossing, nearly six-minute cornerstone of Weather Alive with vocals ringing through an old synth played by ambient artist Dustin O’Halloran (A Winged Victory for the Sullen), backing vocals from the “sublimely odd” (NY Magazine) Grey McMurray and double bass by Orton’s frequent collaborator, Ali Friend of the London instrumental outfit Red Snapper.
Weather Alive has already established itself as one of the most anticipated releases of Orton’s celebrated career, with the title track (released in May) earning widespread praise in from The New York Times, NME, and Pitchfork who called it “a slow-burning tour de force” in a Best New Track review. Rolling Stone added that the song is “the perfect ethereal glue,” and Stereogum stated simply “if the title track is anything to go by, holy shit are we in for something”.
Watch the “Forever Young” video directed by Stephen Ellcock and Jonathan Reid-Edwards below:
“Beth originally had the idea of looking at women as mystics and witchcraft as a form of spiritual connection rather than evil,” says Dir. Ellcock. “Running with this, we wanted to make something that took you on a journey both cosmic and macrocosmic, from outer to inner space and back again. A kaleidoscope of archetypal imagery and shifting perspectives seen through a miraculous scrying glass, it subverts stereotypes whilst celebrating the power of intuition and the persistence of hope and magic in a treacherous universe.”
Fully at the helm of her own work, Orton chose collaborators for Weather Alive including drummer Tom Skinner (Sons Of Kemet, The Smile) and bassist Tom Herbert with whom she trusted to add nuanced emotional color to the music.
“It’s true that I’ve spent a lifetime handing elements of my work over to men in a room before I’m ready and having them reinterpret my perception, add chords to make something else happen and sometimes in the process take the music to a place I had no intention of going, it’s subtle the ways that could happen but to be able to hold my own intention throughout has been a powerful experience.”
“I wanted to be one of those women who are all sorted and put together some day but at 40, I kept getting messier and things just kept going wrong,” Orton continues. “This record explores all of that. I’m talking about my experiences possibly in a more personal way then I ever have but the important part will be how this music makes other people feel. It’s not a finished masterpiece, it is a collaboration with time, of someone struggling to make sense. And in that struggle, something beautiful got made.”
Recently, Orton rang in the the 25th-anniversary of her Mercury Prize-nominated 1996 folktronica album Trailer Park on the road at arenas with Alanis Morissette in EU and the UK. This Fall, she will play a handful of UK and EU festivals before a headline UK tour through October including a KOKO Camden show on October 9th.

Today, Cat Power – the singer/songwriter/producer Chan Marshall – announces details of a very special London show. On November 5th, Marshall will play the iconic Royal Albert Hall with a set recreating Bob Dylan’s legendary 1966 show at the same venue in full.
Dylan’s 1966 Royal Albert Hall concert was the culmination of one of the most consequential tours in the history of rock & roll—when he electrified his songs, and by doing so enraged his devoted audience. Recorded and released at first as a bootleg LP, the event actually occurred at Manchester Free Trade Hall, but was mistakenly attributed to Royal Albert Hall.
Cat Power will bring those songs to Royal Albert Hall on November 5th, performing them in the same order as Dylan himself: the first half of the show being an acoustic set before been joined by her electric band for the second half.
Cat Power is well known for her ability to “burrow right into the marrow of a song” (Mojo), and this November gig will be a showcase of that skill as she honours one of her biggest heroes.
Marshall says of the event: “When I finally got the opportunity to play The RAH, it was a no brainer. I just wanted to sing Dylan songs. And as much as any, this collection of his songs, to me, belong there.”
Marshall has previously covered Dylan several times on record, such as in 2007 for Todd Haynes’s film I’m Not There. Listen to her rendition of “Stuck Inside of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again” here.
Tickets are on sale here from Friday 15th July at 10am, and presale access begins Wednesday 13th July at 10 am GMT.
The gig will follow Cat Power’s recent acclaimed album Covers. Produced entirely by Marshall, the music was highlighted everywhere from The New Yorker (“in reinterpreting classics, she has furthered her stature as one”), to NYLON (“hits like a freight train”), Pitchfork, Vulture, FADER, Rolling Stone and more. Covers completes a trilogy of sorts, following beloved past collections Jukebox (2008) and The Covers Record (2000), and showcases Marshall’s extraordinary chronicling of the ever-evolving great American songbook — featuring her own personal rendition of Billie Holiday’s “I’ll Be Seeing You,” Frank Ocean’s “Bad Religion,” Dead Man’s Bones’ “Pa Pa Power,” plus an updated rendition of the Cat Power song “Hate” from The Greatest (2006), retitled “Unhate” for the album. Marshall also recently shared her cover of The Rolling Stones’ “You Got The Silver”.
While she frequently delights and surprises with the songs she chooes to cover, it’s Marshall’s total commitment to the performance – imbuing the songs with a creative singularity that rivals her original work – that make Cat Power covers so special. Says Pitchfork, Marshall can “rearrange a song simply by squinting at it.”

Today, Margo Price joins forces with Mavis Staples and Adia Victoria on “Fight To Make It,” a rousing affirmation of perseverance and solidarity for those whose human rights continue to be taken. All proceeds from Bandcamp sales of the new single will benefit NOISE FOR NOW, a national initiative that enables artists and entertainers to connect with and financially support grassroots organizations that work in the field of Reproductive Justice, including abortion access.
Written by Price and Jeremy Ivey, “Fight To Make It” blends modern-day grit with vintage, girl group harmonies, singing out in defiance of gender, race and class divides. On the song and the current state of the country, Margo Price says, “Every day I see more of our rights stripped away in America. The right to reproductive health in this country has become a luxury for the wealthy. The United States has a higher maternal death rate than any other developed country. Black women in particular experience maternal mortality at a rate two to three times higher than white women. Tennessee now has stricter abortion laws than the Taliban. This should not be a political issue, or a religious issue, this is a human rights issue.
When we stand together and sing together we are stronger. Massive thanks to my friend Adia Victoria for joining me and our mutual hero, the legendary Mavis Staples for adding the wisdom and strength of her voice. Her art and activism have long inspired me and I’m grateful for her contribution to the song.”
“Fight To Make It” is Margo Price’s latest partnership with NOISE FOR NOW, following recent fundraising efforts around a cover of Lesley Gore’s “You Don’t Own Me” released this spring.
NOISE FOR NOW is a national initiative that enables artists and entertainers to connect with and financially support grassroots organizations that work in the field of Reproductive Justice, including abortion access. NOISE FOR NOW is the link between touring musicians, progressive promoters, athletes, artists and local reproductive rights organizations in cities across the country. By organizing benefit events and campaigns, NOISE FOR NOW provides opportunities for artists and entertainers to use their talents to raise money and send a clear message that Reproductive Rights are human rights.
