Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ Is Getting A 40th Anniversary Double-CD Set

Sony Music and the Estate of Michael Jackson today announced that it will celebrate the 40th anniversary of Michael Jackson’s Thriller, the biggest selling album of all time, with the November 18 release of Michael Jackson Thriller 40, a double CD set comprised of Michael’s original masterpiece Thriller and an exciting second disc full of surprises for fans including never-released tracks which were worked on by Michael for the Thriller album. To date, the album has amassed in excess of 100 million in sales worldwide.

In the US, Walmart will have an exclusive version of the original Thriller album with an alternate 40th anniversary cover, while Target will have an exclusive version of the original album with a commemorative Thriller 40 vinyl slip mat. Both of these will also be available outside the US from various retailers.

Mastered from the original analog master tapes, Mobile Fidelity will also make available the original Thriller album as a One-Step 180g 33RPM LP, pressed at RTI and strictly limited to 40,000 numbered copies as well as a hybrid SACD. An UltraDisc One-Step 180g 45RPM 2LP set of Thriller will be released at a future date.

Several activations are planned between now and the end of the year to honor Michael’s epic creation which won a record setting 8 Grammys, smashed musical barriers and changed the frontiers of pop music and videos forever. Michael Jackson’s Thriller has spent more than 500 weeks on the Billboard album chart and has sold over 100 million albums since its release on November 30, 1982. Thriller holds a modern-day record of 37 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard. It was the first album in history to spend each of its first 80 weeks in the album chart’s Top 10, a feat only reached by one other album in the nearly four decades since. During its 112th week on Billboard’s album chart, it became the first title ever to be certified RIAA 20X multi-Platinum (October 30, 1984) and became the first title ever to be certified more than RIAA 30X multi-Platinum in 2015 and since has been certified at 34x Multi-Platinum.

Worldwide, Thriller went to #1 in practically every country in the world, including the UK, France, Italy, Australia, Denmark, Belgium, South Africa, Spain, Ireland, New Zealand, Canada and apartheid South Africa and remains the biggest selling album of all time with sales in excess of 100 million. Seven tracks from the album became Top 10 singles, and three, “Beat It,” “Billie Jean,” and “Thriller,” went No. 1.

The music on Thriller was so singular for the time it defied any definition of rock, pop or soul that had gone before. “Beat It” was a new kind of pop-rock hybrid and demolished the longstanding segregation between black and white music with Eddie Van Halen’s incendiary guitar. On “The Girl Is Mine,” two men, one white and one Black, banter about the same girl. On the same album were songs like the African-rooted “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin'” and the rhythm and blues-based “Billie Jean.”

Michael set out to revolutionize how to tell a story and entertain on a grand scale through film but faced roadblocks. Despite the luscious cinematography, dramatic narrative and spectacular choreography of “Billie Jean,” a fledgling MTV, which was programming white rock artists almost exclusively, refused to play it. Epic persisted. Once the wall came crashing down, MTV’s ratings soared and a door was opened for a generation of African American artists. “He was MTV’s Jackie Robinson,” said cultural critic Touré.

Next, came the unforgettable short film for “Beat It,” which featured Michael bringing two gangs together through the power of music and dance. And then there was “Thriller.” Premiered at the AVCO Theatre in Los Angeles in 1983, it sold out every night for three weeks. No other video before or since has generated such excitement and has such a hold on our attention, such that 40 years later we all share it as a collective memory and it remains the only music video to be inducted into the elite National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.

Music from Thriller and Michael’s other hit albums is featured in the hit Las Vegas show Michael Jackson ONE, at the Michael Jackson ONE Theater in Mandalay Bay Resorts and Casino and in the acclaimed Broadway musical MJ The Musical at the Neil Simon Theatre in New York, which was nominated for 10 Tony Awards last week. Conceived by producer, songwriter and artist Steve Strongman, the “collective” features a veritable who’s who of the blues, including Dawn Tyler Watson, Crystal Shawanda, Steve Marriner, Jesse O’Brien, Alec Fraser, and Harrison Kennedy — who can be heard on the album’s newly released single, “I Like To Ride.”

With seven albums as a solo artist — plus Canada’s JUNO Award, the Mel Brown Blues Award, International Blues Challenge’s Best Guitarist winner, four Maple Blues Awards, and more — deep into his career Strongman is an acclaimed bluesman known for liberally applying swampy swagger and sweetness to shuffles, blues ballads, and four-on-the-floor chuggers alike. The Strongman Blues Remedy, Volume 1 is the Hamilton, Ontario-based musician’s first time producing, a process he calls “a huge learning curve, but incredibly rewarding.”

North By Northeast Music Festival Puts Focus Into The Clubs June 14-19, 2022

The festival with a capital ’N’, as in Next to discover the best bands before they break through is back; North by Northeast (NXNE) is officially starting to unveil its 2022 plans right as the sun starts to warm our souls.

Taking place in the nation’s entertainment mecca that is Toronto, Canada’s quintessential annual cultural explosion featuring music and more is set to span June 14th – 19th and feature more than 300 of the world’s best artists of today — and tomorrow.

Case in point? NXNE had Grimes, Lumineers, Daniel Caesar, Run The Jewels, The Weather Station, Sarah Harmer, Metz, Sarah Harmer, the Arkells, Sam Roberts, Lizzo, Future Islands, Vince Staples, Billy Talent, Post Malone, Feist, and thousands more on stages as part of the festival… All before they became household names.

“We’re back and taking over more than 20 of Toronto’s top live music venues,” NXNE Founder and President Michael Hollett reveals. “We want to make it very easy for people to come back to live music and experience stage-hopping like festivals used to be.”

NXNE makes great music accessible and inclusive to all, no artists are asked to pay to apply to play, all performers are paid, and admission to Club Shows in 2022 is low cost or free.

“Is This Love’ was actually the perfect follow-up to ‘Battle Scars,’ which had a 70s rock/pop sound,” Nathalie Miranda shares. “‘Is This Love’ was always meant to be a nod to 80s pop music — which is my favorite music decade — so I thought ‘why not follow up a 70s sound with an 80s sound?’”

“My producer worked on a retro production but with modern elements and, when I heard it for the first time, I had the biggest smile on my face! This song would finally allow me to live out my 80s popstar dream!’”

However, no 80s pop song is complete without a music video, especially one where balloons fall from the heavens. Nathalie Miranda checks all the boxes in her debut music video for “Is This Love,” using her connections as a breakthrough musician to really make this production complete; taking advantage of local venues and a bit of home reorganizing creates the perfect aesthetic for this breakout synth-queen.

“I took inspiration from 80s artists like Kylie Minogue and Madonna, but my main reference point was ‘I Wanna Dance with Somebody’ by Whitney Houston,” she explains. “I loved the colors in her video and the way everything was fast-paced. I even bought a purple dress similar to the one she wears in the video! It took a bit of searching but I found something very close, and it worked perfectly.”

While Girl Pow-R may be based out of Toronto, the young, powerhouse women who comprise the group come together from all parts of the globe, and now they’re back with a single that’s outta this “Galaxy.”

The JUNO-nominated girl group — including Emma Bown from Hamilton, Cindy Kofman from Richmond Hill, and Carina Bianchini from Markham — have been inspiring audiences and motivating young people since bursting on the scene in 2017. The pop/alternative/dance outfit found one another on International Women’s Day, and have been leaving their indelible mark on the music community ever since.

Now they’re back with “Galaxy,” the eponymous lead track off their sophomore release. The electro-pop, alternative track is a metamorphosis into a new sonic era for the group. Produced by Jovan Jovanov and Ivan Jovanov IWAYO, the song speaks to the greater purpose of the group: reminding fans that nothing is impossible and that aiming for the stars means landing among the galaxy and new heights.

Robb Nash is the “Ally” Many Need with Release of New Single & EP

Named an ‘Extraordinary Canadian,’ award-winning Canadian rocker and Governor General of Canada Meritorious Service Medal recipient Robb Nash is the “Ally” many who are waging war against mental illness need to have on their side.

So goes the fitting title of his newly available song and EP, “Ally” — the latest in a string of stirring releases shining a stark spotlight on suicide and prevention.

“With the theme of being ‘at war’ with mental illness, I wanted to show all aspects of it,” Nash shares, citing his forthcoming album’s title, This Is War. “There are moments when you’re on the front lines. There are moments when you’re in triage

“And the new single, ‘Ally,’ is the moment you realize that, in order to win any war, you can’t fight it alone,” he continues. “In the song, you’ll hear two people having faced the same struggles cry out and vow to be there whenever their ally feels fragile and vulnerable.”

One peek up Nash’s sleeve at the hundreds of names tattooed on his arm reveals he very much walks the talk.

“The names are from over 900 suicide notes I’ve received from kids,” Nash explains. “Some of them have my lyrics as tattoos, too; it’s a mutual relationship of ‘go forth and conquer.’”

Alongside The Robb Nash Project’s new songs, “This Is War” and “Ally,” and the album that orbits them, the skin-inked gesture is part of Nash’s long-held commitment to combat mental illness — a high-stakes conflict he personally endured.

Found with no pulse following a head-on collision, Nash was resuscitated on the side of the icy road near his home in Winnipeg, MB. His skull was rebuilt with Titanium, and his lengthy recovery sparked a severe depression. “Frankly, I did not want to be alive,” he shares. “I was an athlete; my identity was lost, and that brought me to a very dark place for two-and-a-half years.

“Men in this society can feel like talking about our feelings or struggles is weak, so I kept it inside. One day, I picked up the guitar and started my entire journey into music to tell my story.”

While that journey included, at one point, a record deal on the table, it ultimately morphed into a motivational-meets-music tour telling his story, confronting stigmas, demonstrating purpose, and welcoming those most vulnerable to feel okay asking for help.

Now in its 11th year and counting, The Robb Nash Project has appeared before more than 500,000 people — mostly students across the country, as well as at maximum-security prisons, and keynote speeches for the Psychiatric Association of Canada. He also works closely with Kids Help Phone, the Canadian Mental Health Association, and school counselors to ensure students get the follow-up they need.

While the new album’s inspiration might have come from students coast to coast, the sound on This Is War is all Nash’s. Co-produced by Anthony Anderson and Steve Smith, the 13-track heavy rock release reveals the familiar full-throated rallying cry of anger, hope, and concern previously displayed across EPs Tell Me Why (2019), Live On Arrival (2020), and more. This is War marks the first release under Nash’s new partnership with Warner Music Canada.

“It all has the same goal: save lives,” Nash says of both his public health leadership and music — including This Is War. “I’ve realized you can have all the resources available, but if people aren’t ready to reach out for help, it’s no use.

“In that, I was trying to figure out what my role was,” he shares of both the album, and his ongoing ethos that’s earned him a rightful spot in Peter Mansbridge’s book, Extraordinary Canadians, as well the Meritorious Service Medal from the Governor General of Canada.

“I’m not a counselor. I’m not a psychologist. I’m here to get the conversation started, and to let people know it’s okay to reach out for help.”
