90s Grunge Band Candlebox To Be Featured In New Feature-Length Documentary

0

Warner Music Entertainment (WME), the television and film division of Warner Music Group, has partnered with Highway West Entertainment on a forthcoming new feature-length documentary, Far Behind: The Candlebox Story. The film will explore the beginnings of what the world would come to know as the grunge scene, following the iconic band Candlebox on their rise to fame.

Guy Oseary, manager of legendary artists such as U2, Madonna, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, will serve as Executive Producer on the project, along with Jack Piatt, Director/Producer and founder of Highway West Ent., who initiated the collaboration with Candlebox front man Kevin Martin.

Kevin Martin said: “The story of Candlebox is one that’s long overdue for a telling, and I cannot wait to share this documentary with the world – no holds barred, honest, painful, and as real as it gets. Ours is the story of an unknown band of childhood friends-turned-brothers who took the world by storm on their very first voyage, only to lose their way in an unforgiving ocean of bad decisions and disagreements over who would captain the ship. Though I’ve kept the Candlebox name alive in the years since the original line-up split at the turn of the millennium – continuing to release relevant music and perform for legions of fans with the help of some of the most talented musicians around – there was magic between us four original guys. And now that we’re touring together for the 30th anniversary, Candlebox is a story of redemption as well.”

Guy Oseary added: “At 20 years old, I signed Candlebox to Maverick Records. Their debut album sold more than four million copies, which gave me a spectacular start to my journey in the music business. For that I will always be indebted to them.”

Jack Piatt added: “I was in high school when the early 90’s Seattle sound made its way to rural Ohio, and it left a huge impression on my life musically. Candlebox plays a key role in this historic legacy. This is an important story for a lot of people, and I’m honored to have the opportunity to tell it.”

Warner Music Entertainment President Charlie Cohen said: “Candlebox’s impact on the music scene in Seattle and beyond is undeniable. They helped mold the grunge sound into the globally renowned genre that it became, and we are incredibly excited to help tell their story with Guy, Jack, and the fantastic team at Highway West Entertainment.”

Candlebox first formed in 1990 and helped lay the groundwork for the grunge genre, alongside notable bands such as Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Nirvana, and others. Far Behind: The Candlebox Story will feature footage and interviews with original band members Kevin MartinPeter KlettScott Mercado, and Bardi Martin, in addition to Guy Oseary, famed Soundgarden/Alice in Chains manager Susan Silver, and others. The band has sold over seven million albums worldwide, scoring the megahits “Far Behind” and “You,” which have garnered over 100 million streams, decades after their initial release. The band’s new album, Wolves, has been in the top 10 on two Billboard charts (Hard Music Albums and Alternative Albums). The band is gearing up for a new tour starting this May.

Oseary and Piatt are joined by Candlebox’s manager and longtime music industry veteran Amy Decker, who will also serve as Executive Producer with fellow Producer Caroline Hoste (founder, Hello Stranger Creative) as well as Executive Producer Charlie Cohen (WME).

The film went into production in summer 2021 and is gearing up for a fall 2022 release.

Nat ‘King’ Cole’s ‘Capitol Rarities (Vol.1)’ Is Out Now On Digital Platforms

0

He had a voice like cappuccino, swung like no other, and inhabited some of the greatest love songs ever written — and his music both typified its era and proves everlasting in 2022. Now, to celebrate Nat King Cole’s birthday, March 17, some of his rarest tracks are joining the digital age.

Capitol Records and Universal Music Enterprises today announce Capitol Rarities (Vol. 1), a collection of 14 tracks by Nat King Cole, five of which will be available on streaming platforms for the first time ever. Sourced from Cole’s fruitful creative stretch between 1949 and 1952, highlights like “Tunnel of Love,” “I’ll Always Remember You” and “My First and My Last Love” feature all the effervescent swing and moonlit balladry that made Cole one of the most iconic performers ever to emerge from the jazz/pop sphere.

Bruce Resnikoff, UMe’s President & CEO, said, “As guardians of Nat King Cole’s legendary Capitol tapes, we look forward to making even more of his vast catalog of recordings available, from his biggest hits to deeper tracks that have been unavailable for decades. Whether you’re a long-time fan or just beginning to discover this incredible American talent, this series will provide much more insight into his repertoire from across his storied musical career. With more Nat King Cole projects in the works, I can’t wait to release even more material from the vaults.”

Even the most casual music listeners probably know one or two hits by memory — such is his ageless appeal — but Capitol Rarities (Vol. 1) provides deeper insights into the Book of Nat. While lesser known than Nat’s biggest chart hits, these early and currently unavailable hidden gems are astonishing high-quality recordings. Most haven’t been reissued in many years and, before this series, many had not been available digitally (and all are currently unavailable). The collection contains collaborations with some of the very best in the business — composers Frank Loesser, Jimmy Van Heusen and Johnny Burke, arrangers Nelson Riddle and Pete Rugolo, vocalists Alyce King and the Ray Charles Singers, and bongo player Jack Costanzo — it contains tender duets with his wife, Maria Cole.

Indeed, she sings in tandem with her husband on three tracks: The 1950 version of Larry Shay, Charles Tobias and Roy Alfred’s “Get Out and Get Under the Moon”; Roy Alfred’s “Hey, Not Now! (I’ll Tell You When);” and Marvin Fisher and Alfred’s “It’s a Man Every Time.” Many of the tracks feature Cole’s inimitable trio, which featured guitarist Irving Ashby and bassist Joe Comfort. And it all concludes with the radiant “Easter Sunday Morning,” which acts as both a fitting capper for this revelatory collection and a harbinger of more euphoric songs by an American treasure — ones that Capitol and UMe are lovingly restoring to their rightful place in the digital landscape.

Even though Cole passed away in 1965 at just 45 years old, he left behind a vast catalog of recordings that remind us, even on what would have been his 103rd birthday, of his extraordinary talents. When it comes to American geniuses like Cole, digging a little deeper every now and again is always an excellent idea.

Def Leppard Are Back With New Album ‘Diamond Star Halos’ On May 27

0

Ready to ignite 2022, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-inducted icons and rock music legends Def Leppard return with their twelfth full-length album, Diamond Star Halos, on May 27th, 2022. It marks the band’s first new work since 2015’s chart-topping self-titled, Def Leppard. It is available for pre-order now in multiple configurations, including a Deluxe Edition, 2-LP Vinyl, Digital formats and more.

To herald the arrival of Diamond Star Halos, the UK quintet—Joe Elliott [vocals], Rick Savage [bass], Rick Allen [drums], Phil Collen [guitar], and Vivian Campbell [guitar]— have just shared a powerful and rip-roaring new rock single entitled “Kick.” The song thrusts into an anthemic stadium-ready frenzy kickstarted with driving guitars and bombastic drums woven into its musical fabric. Meanwhile, the chorus has all the makings of another iconic Leppard hit with its skyscraping vocals and melodies the band has become synonymous for. The artwork for Diamond Star Halos is art in itself. The design follows pedigree with their instantly recognizable album covers from their celebrated past. With images by world renowned photographer and director Anton Corbijn, styling concepts by Maryam Malakpour and graphics by the UK based Munden Brothers, the design truly follows the band’s influence through their eyes today.

Stay tuned for the premiere of the music video very soon. Following the album’s release, Def Leppard will co-headline the massive 36 city The Stadium Tour with Mötley Crüe joined by special guests Poison and Joan Jett.

Over the past two years, Def Leppard recorded Diamond Star Halos simultaneously in three different countries with Joe in Ireland, Sav in England, and Phil, Vivian, and Rick in the United States. Without the pressure of timelines or a fixed schedule, they poured all of their energy into crafting 15 meaningful tracks with a mixture of classic spirit meets modern fire. Thematically, they nodded to their earliest collective influences such as David Bowie, T. Rex, and Mott The Hoople, among others. The title itself notably references T. Rex’s “Bang a Gong (Get It On).” However, they didn’t embark on this journey alone. The multi-Grammy award winning and legendary artist Alison Krauss lent her instantly recognizable and angelic voice to “This Guitar” and “Lifeless,” while David Bowie pianist Mike Garson performs on “Goodbye For Good This Time” and “Angels (Can’t Help You Now).”

Bob Crawford of The Avett Brothers to Host ‘Concerts of Change’ Exclusively on SiriusXM

0

SiriusXM announced today the launch of a new original series, Concerts of Change: The Soundtrack of Human Rights, hosted by Bob Crawford, bassist of The Avett Brothers. This new audio docu-series will debut on March 22, exclusively on SiriusXM on the Volume channel, with additional content available on the SXM App.

Musician and historian Crawford hosts this all-new series that explores the 1970s through the 1990s, when benefit concerts and artist activism sparked a new era focused on human rights. From George Harrison’s The Concert for Bangladesh to Live Aid, Sun City, and Amnesty International’s concerts, Crawford explores the soundtracks and the legacy leading to these events, and how they remain impactful today. Featuring interviews and candid conversations with Bono, President George W. Bush, Bob Geldof, Joan Baez, Steve Van Zandt, Jackson Browne and other artists, politicians, and journalists, Concerts of Change showcases the music that defined history and dives into the politics that sparked it.

“Concerts of Change has been a real passion project for me,” said Bob Crawford. “The impact these concerts had on my life–not only musically but as an activist and historian–have continued to be an inspiration for me today. We’ll take a look at how musicians in the 1980s tackled human rights, racism and the impact of living in the shadow of the Cold War. All issues that are relevant again today.”

“We’re excited to partner with Bob on this new docu-series where he gets to explore the things he loves–music and history,” said Roger Coletti, Executive Producer of SiriusXM’s Volume channel. “We can’t wait for our audiences to jump right into this series that explores pivotal moments in time, through Bob’s insightful conversations with an all-star lineup of artists and activists.”

Concerts of Change: The Soundtrack of Human Rights kicks off on March 22 at 1 pm ET, and will air bi-weekly on SiriusXM’s Volume channel 106. Listeners will also find extended bonus content with lengthier interviews and outtakes, exclusively available and streaming anytime on the SXM App beginning March 22.

SXM Media, SiriusXM’s combined sales organization, has exclusive global ad sales rights for Concerts of Change: The Soundtrack of Human Rights. Access for brands and marketers is only available through the advertising and sales arm of SiriusXM, Stitcher and Pandora.

The Avett Brothers kick-off their U.S. Tour on March 19 in Greensboro, NC. More information on The Avett Brothers here.

Bob Crawford’s Concerts of Change is the latest original series joining SiriusXM’s Volume channel, home to a variety of programming dedicated to conversations about music including: WHOOOSH! hosted by Simon Le Bon, The Jimmy Jam Show, Feedback hosted by Nik Carter and Lori Majewski, Lefsetz Live with Bob Lefsetz, Debatable hosted by Mark Goodman and Alan Light, and more.

The Who: Two Brand New Limited Edition Half Speed Mastered Albums: ‘My Generation’ and ‘A Quick One’

0

May 6, 2022, see the release of the first in a series of half speed mastered studio albums from The Who; My Generation and A Quick One.

These limited-edition black vinyl versions have been mastered by long-time Who engineer Jon Astley and cut for vinyl by Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios with a half-speed mastering technique which produces a superior vinyl cut and are packaged in original sleeves with obi strips and certificates of authenticity.

First released in 1965, My Generation was The Who’s debut album, it peaked at No. 5 in the U.K. and unleashed The Who on the world. It has been described as one of the greatest albums of all time by Rolling Stone, Mojo, NME and was selected to be the U.S. Library of Congress’s National Recording Registry as ‘culturally significant’ to be preserved and archived for all time.

The band’s follow up album A Quick One was released in late 1966, it contains more experimental compositions including the nine-minute title track which act as precursors to what was to follow in later years as well as classic Who tunes as “So Sad About Us” and “Boris The Spider.”

The Who are one of the top three greatest rock legacies in music history with 9 U.S. & 10 U.K. top ten albums and 14 U.K. top ten singles.

They have played over well over 2000 gigs in a career spanning over 50 years including venues such as Woodstock, Monterey Pop, Glastonbury (twice), Hyde Park (four times), The Isle Of Wight (three times), the closing ceremony of the 2012 Olympics, Desert Trip, Shea Stadium, The Super Bowl halftime show and Live Aid to name but a very few.

Emerging in the mid-1960s as a new and incendiary force in rock n’ roll, their brash style and poignant storytelling garnered them one of music’s most passionate followings, with the legendary foursome blazing a searing new template for rock, punk, and everything after.

Inducted into the Rock n’ Roll Hall Of Fame in 1990, the band has placed 27 top-forty singles in the United States and United Kingdom and earning 17 Top Ten albums, including the 1969 groundbreaking rock opera Tommy, 1971’s pummeling Live At Leeds, 1973’s Quadrophenia and 1978’s Who Are You. The Who debuted in 1964 with a trio of anthems “I Can’t Explain,” “The Kids Are Alright” and “My Generation.” Since then they have delivered to the world hits such as “Baba O’Riley,” “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” “Pinball Wizard,” Who Are You,” and,” You Better You Bet.”

In 2008, they became the first rock band ever to be awarded the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors. The Who has performed all over the world including global music events for the Super Bowl XLIV Halftime Show in 2010 and closing the Summer Olympics in 2012. The Who continued their charity work by playing a concert in January 2011 to raise money for trials of a new cancer treatment called PDT. In December 2012 they performed at the Hurricane Sandy Benefit in New York.

Alongside his groundbreaking work with the Teenage Cancer Trust in the U.K., in November 2012 Daltrey, with Townshend at his side, launched Teen Cancer America, $1 from each ticket sold for the 2019 MOVING ON! tour which each night features a full orchestra will benefit Teen Cancer America (www.teencanceramerica.org)

With both Roger and Pete delivering their own memoirs (Pete’s Who I Am was released to much acclaim in 2012, and Roger’s autobiography, Thanks A Lot Mr. Kibblewhite; My Story, was embraced by critics in 2018) it’s fitting that the two remaining WHO members have shared their incredible legacy in literary fashion, for few bands have had a more lasting impact on the rock era and the reverberating pop culture than The Who.

The band released their first new album in thirteen years, the critically acclaimed WHO in 2019 and return to the road later this year with THE WHO HITS BACK tour.

Danah-Lee Shakes Off Shame & Fear in Affirming “Home to Myself”

0

The way back to God, or to one’s religion, is often found first by finding a way to be true to oneself. With that, Canadian Christian pop artist Danah-Lee pulls back the curtain on such a journey in her cello-studded, piano-infused new single, “Home To Myself.”

Arriving ahead of the artist’s forthcoming new album, Made In The Image — coming this Spring — ”Home To Myself”s chorus is simple but powerful and heartfelt: “I’m coming home to myself.”

And the process of coming home is one the Ottawa Valley, ON-based artist knows personally, having struggled with her sexuality in the context of her faith.

“For years, I grappled with being a Queer within the Church, and carried tremendous guilt – eventually deciding to stop worshipping God through song, because I did not feel worthy as a Queer,” she shares. “After choosing to love myself as a child of God, I rediscovered my faith and I believe there is a place for everyone in the kingdom of God.”

“Home To Myself” begins with bell-like piano and vocals that cascade like clear water. Introspective cello joins the mix, along with warm, honeyed harmonies blending Danah-Lee’s crystalline vocals with the rich, deeper tones of backing singer Jeremy Hardy.

The song’s message is of having abandoned oneself, only to journey back and become stronger than before:

Oh bring me some freedom
Bring me some ease
Decades of loneliness imprisoned in fear
Bring me some freedom
Bring me some peace

Danah-Lee is a Contemporary Christian/LGBTQ musician, producer, award-winning music educator, entrepreneur, and author. Outside of her strong faith in Christ as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, and outside of her career as an artist, Danah owns and operates a safe and inclusive music school. She was recently nominated for LouderThanTheMusic’s “Christian Album of the Year” and the “Impact Award” at Ottawa’s Capital Music Awards. She has released three solo albums and two collaboration albums and has toured extensively throughout North America.

As a Christian artist, she does not fit the traditional mold because of her existence within the marginalized LGBTQ community. It is Danah’s hope to merge Christian ideals and a Queer existence into her music. The intention is to inform, engage, educate, and open doors.

The cross-community collaboration as a Queer and Christian has the power, potency, and potential to bring change to both the Christian community and the Queer community. After all, the premise of Christianity is LOVE. Her previous album, These Are A Few of My Favourite Hymns is a rekindling of her favorite songs, stemming back from her time as a youth in the church.

Her single “Home To Myself,” from her forthcoming album Made In the Image, is available now.

2022 JUNO Award Nominee Donné Roberts Celebrates City Life & Neighbourly Love with “Seheno”

0

It’s a big, diverse world out there, and living in any supportive and caring community can help us thrive. Multi-award winning Madagascar singer/songwriter Donné Roberts has experienced that nurturing feeling of community in his adoptive home of Toronto, and represents it in his joyful new global music single, “Seheno.”

A key track from Roberts’ third solo album, Oya, released last August, “Seheno” is a celebration of life and neighbourly love flowing along to a multi-cultural rhythm. Written and sung in Roberts’ first language, Malagasy, there’s a global, but widely shared human experience that he is conveying.

“‘Seheno’ is about regular life in the big city where some people may find it stressful and that can create a feeling of being lost in the daily rush,” explains the winner of two JUNO Awards and nominee for three more. “However, there is always a way and nice people around who are supportive to others everywhere you go.

“It’s all good, and life is beautiful.”

Roberts is as much a natural optimist, and he is a natural musician.

Much like Madagascar music is infused with African, Austronesian, Arabic and European influences, Donné Roberts’ music is a delicious mélange of international sonic flavours — an innate feat certainly evident in “Seheno” and its beautiful interplay between marimba, Latin acoustic guitar and layered vocal harmonies.

Dubbed “Malagasy Soul” by Jonny Dovercourt of Toronto’s Wavelength Music Series, he says Roberts’ music “fluidly fuses folk, funk, blues and rock into irresistibly danceable forms that reflect his roots in Madagascar, Russia and Canada.” Dovercourt adds that Roberts is “likely the only Wavelength alumnus to have performed at Live 8 and won a JUNO.” Live 8 was Bob Geldof’s massive 2005 international concert event to support the UK’s Make Poverty History movement to raise awareness of issues in Africa such as AIDS, poverty, hunger and government debt.

Donné Roberts’ own life and artistry has certainly been globally influenced. Born in Madagascar and raised and educated in the USSR (Russia), he speaks Malagasy, Russian, French and English. Roberts’ varied artistic background includes touring as a backup vocalist for Swedish pop titans Ace of Base and becoming the first black VJ for MTV Russia. After emigrating to Canada, he has recorded and released three albums, Rhythm Was Born (2006), Internation (2011) and Oya (2021) and has collaborated on recordings with African Guitar Summit, Okavango African Orchestra, Amanda Martinez, Sultans of String, leading to his 2 JUNO wins and 3 nominations. His growing success caught the attention of CBC Radio, who asked him to compose the theme song for their popular morning show Fresh Air.

Variety is the spice of Roberts’ music with experimentation and collaboration two of the major hallmarks of his compositions. He loves to hear how other musicians might interpret his songs and add their own personalities to them.

“I like to experiment with the sound of my guitar, make it sound like a mandolin, a kora, or like an organ in reggae,” he says, adding, “I love to collaborate with my bandmates and learn different things from them. I like to hear different approaches to my songs.”

Above everything else, Roberts aims for his musical concoctions to be a source of hope and joy.

“Different situations such as happiness, sadness, unfairness, and many everyday life experiences inspire me to write songs,” he explains, “But nowadays, my principle is to make sure to have a happy ending to a song, or at least have them full of hope or both because I want everyone to have hope and be happy.”

Considering what we’ve been through as a human race over the past few years, that’s an extra admirable wish for an artist and his music.
