Girl Pow-R Dazzle with Out-Of-This-World New Single, “Galaxy”

0

While Girl Pow-R may be based out of Toronto, the young, powerhouse women who comprise the group come together from all parts of the globe, and now they’re back with a single that’s outta this “Galaxy.”

The JUNO-nominated girl group — including Emma Bown from Hamilton, Cindy Kofman from Richmond Hill, and Carina Bianchini from Markham — have been inspiring audiences and motivating young people since bursting on the scene in 2017. The pop/alternative/dance outfit found one another on International Women’s Day, and have been leaving their indelible mark on the music community ever since.

Now they’re back with “Galaxy,” the eponymous lead track off their sophomore release. The electro-pop, alternative track is a metamorphosis into a new sonic era for the group. Produced by Jovan Jovanov and Ivan Jovanov IWAYO, the song speaks to the greater purpose of the group: reminding fans that nothing is impossible and that aiming for the stars means landing among the galaxy and new heights.

“‘Galaxy’ is all about leaving your mark and chasing after your dreams no matter how big they may be,” says Cindy. “We will learn to conquer the whole galaxy, as we are determined to make it! We want the listeners to know that we are coming out strong with our new music and plans, and we can’t wait to make our dreams come true!

“We hope to inspire everyone to go after their dreams no matter how big or small they are!”

The music and the messaging are appropriate for all ages, as Girl Pow-R continues to provide family-friendly music that’s both exciting to dance to and it provides uplifting messages with clean lyrics. “We collaborate on the songwriting, but sometimes we will break off into groups,” Carina explains. “Our producer Jovan gives us ideas for the style of our song, and we come up with different concepts and experiment with lyrics; typically the music comes before the lyrics.

“I believe our music stands out because of the messages we promote that stand behind anti-bullying and self-confidence.”

Girl Pow-R has earned legions of fans the world over, boasting hundreds of thousands of streams and spins online. Beyond the music, the group provides a visual component to their tracks and hits the road performing at hundreds of appearances per year. Their music earns steady rotation in radio and has become internationally recognized both by the sheer number of fans and equally impressive accolades. The music video of “Galaxy” is slated to drop by early Spring 2022.

“‘Galaxy’ started from an idea about using outer space as a metaphor for all of the big things we want to achieve, and places we want to go,” says Carina. “There is no limit on what we and our fans can achieve. We hope that listeners can feel inspired to achieve their goals after listening to this song because if it’s possible to go to space, which the world has already done, then it’s possible to do anything.”

“‘Galaxy’ is basically a symbol for us (and our fans) achieving great things that are ‘out of this world,’” adds Emma. “The inspiration came from wanting to write a song about the future and how we can reach our goals.”

It’s Girl Pow-R’s “Galaxy”… And we’re all invited to orbit it.

Robb Nash is the “Ally” Many Need with Release of New Single & EP

0

Named an ‘Extraordinary Canadian,’ award-winning Canadian rocker and Governor General of Canada Meritorious Service Medal recipient Robb Nash is the “Ally” many who are waging war against mental illness need to have on their side.

So goes the fitting title of his newly available song and EP, “Ally” — the latest in a string of stirring releases shining a stark spotlight on suicide and prevention.

“With the theme of being ‘at war’ with mental illness, I wanted to show all aspects of it,” Nash shares, citing his forthcoming album’s title, This Is War. “There are moments when you’re on the front lines. There are moments when you’re in triage

“And the new single, ‘Ally,’ is the moment you realize that, in order to win any war, you can’t fight it alone,” he continues. “In the song, you’ll hear two people having faced the same struggles cry out and vow to be there whenever their ally feels fragile and vulnerable.”

One peek up Nash’s sleeve at the hundreds of names tattooed on his arm reveals he very much walks the talk.

“The names are from over 900 suicide notes I’ve received from kids,” Nash explains. “Some of them have my lyrics as tattoos, too; it’s a mutual relationship of ‘go forth and conquer.’”

Alongside The Robb Nash Project’s new songs, “This Is War” and “Ally,” and the album that orbits them, the skin-inked gesture is part of Nash’s long-held commitment to combat mental illness — a high-stakes conflict he personally endured.

Found with no pulse following a head-on collision, Nash was resuscitated on the side of the icy road near his home in Winnipeg, MB. His skull was rebuilt with Titanium, and his lengthy recovery sparked a severe depression. “Frankly, I did not want to be alive,” he shares. “I was an athlete; my identity was lost, and that brought me to a very dark place for two-and-a-half years.

“Men in this society can feel like talking about our feelings or struggles is weak, so I kept it inside. One day, I picked up the guitar and started my entire journey into music to tell my story.”

While that journey included, at one point, a record deal on the table, it ultimately morphed into a motivational-meets-music tour telling his story, confronting stigmas, demonstrating purpose, and welcoming those most vulnerable to feel okay asking for help.

Now in its 11th year and counting, The Robb Nash Project has appeared before more than 500,000 people — mostly students across the country, as well as at maximum-security prisons, and keynote speeches for the Psychiatric Association of Canada. He also works closely with Kids Help Phone, the Canadian Mental Health Association, and school counselors to ensure students get the follow-up they need.

While the new album’s inspiration might have come from students coast to coast, the sound on This Is War is all Nash’s. Co-produced by Anthony Anderson and Steve Smith, the 13-track heavy rock release reveals the familiar full-throated rallying cry of anger, hope, and concern previously displayed across EPs Tell Me Why (2019), Live On Arrival (2020), and more. This is War marks the first release under Nash’s new partnership with Warner Music Canada.

“It all has the same goal: save lives,” Nash says of both his public health leadership and music — including This Is War. “I’ve realized you can have all the resources available, but if people aren’t ready to reach out for help, it’s no use.

“In that, I was trying to figure out what my role was,” he shares of both the album, and his ongoing ethos that’s earned him a rightful spot in Peter Mansbridge’s book, Extraordinary Canadians, as well the Meritorious Service Medal from the Governor General of Canada.

“I’m not a counselor. I’m not a psychologist. I’m here to get the conversation started, and to let people know it’s okay to reach out for help.”

Danny Blueberry Pays Homage to “Batman and Robin” with New Single

0

There’s no denying the bat signal in the audio sky. It’s Montreal’s Danny Blueberry flying high on his latest single, a cheeky homage to the dynamite duo of the Superhero universe — “Batman and Robin” is available now.

“I loved everything about the show,” Blueberry says of the Batman series. “From the opening song to the brightly dressed, campy characters and intense wild storylines…

“But what really caught my attention was the Batgirl/librarian character played by Yvonne Craig,” he continues. “I fell in love with her character and was always astounded at how Batman and Robin always seemed to ignore her as they spoke about the crimes they wanted to prevent and the Bat-toys they would use.”

An international storyteller with experience spanning decades, Blueberry has gone on to pen more than seventy songs over his illustrious career. Time spent in Taiwan in 2021 introduced Blueberry to Mike McLaughlin and Chuck Payne, two American musicians based out of the Asian country. Together, the trio spent nearly a year recording together and ultimately produced nearly thirty originals Blueberry had crafted over his tenure as a musician.

“These songs are now being released monthly,” Blueberry explains. “Each with a video, and each will be part of a collection called The Opium Year.” The first three tracks off the latest album have reached 300k+ streams on Spotify in their first month alone.

“The collection contains songs I’ve written over a forty-year period – this is one of the most immature ones, but also quite a lot of fun and an audience favourite at my shows,” Blueberry adds.

“Batman and Robin” is a cleverly masterminded rock piece; high-energy, and fast tempo as if you’re listening to a comic book out of your speakers. Its electrifying lead guitar mashed with pulsating percussion lets you relive the earliest inceptions of the original cartoon Batman and lingers on like an earworm.

“As I got older and learned how to play guitar, this was the first song I wrote as I imagined a racier version of the show,” Blueberry says. “The lyrics and angst show what was going through my 17-year-old brain back in 1980.”

The sheer fun and excitement of Blueberry’s “Batman and Robin” is a reassurance that nostalgia lives on — through reruns, through memory, through newly designed homages; and for this songwriter, through audioscape.

One spin and you’re suddenly a citizen of Gotham. The moon has been set aside as the brightest light in the sky. It’s been replaced by the bat signal of Danny Blueberry. And the message is a song about the most heroic dream team of them all — “Batman and Robin.”

The Story Of Bing Crosby And How He Changed Media Forever

In 1946 Bing Crosby was the king of media. He was the movie star, the pop star and his radio show was reaching a third of American living rooms each week. But then, it all started to fall apart. His ratings were plummeting and his fans were fleeing. Bing however, was not going down without a fight.

Today, the story of how Bing Crosby and some stolen Nazi technology won his audience back, changed media forever and accidentally broke reality along the way.

She & Him Return With ‘Melt Away: A Tribute To Brian Wilson’ Out July 22

0

Ahead of the release of Zooey Deschanel (She) & M. Ward (Him)’s Melt Away: A Tribute to Brian Wilson, via Fantasy Records on July 22, the duo has premiered a charming rendition of Darlin’, the hit single from The Beach Boys’ 1967 album, Wild Honey.

She & Him’s seventh studio album is a loving, LP-length tribute to one of the greatest living American songwriters and singers – Brian Wilson. Melt Away: A Tribute to Brian Wilson finds Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward diving deep into the legendary artist’s extensive songbook, offering fascinating and delectable new spins on time-honoured classics and overlooked gems alike. These 14 covers are infused with the familiar magic that She & Him fans know and love, opening a new window into Wilson’s iconic catalog. Wilson even features on Do It Again with Zooey and M. Ward for the album. The band has enjoyed a friendship, and mutual appreciation, with Wilson over the years and She & Him was previously a guest vocalist on his 2015 album, No Pier Pressure.

“In the spring of 2020, we started a list of our favourite Brian songs — a very long list,” the duo explains. “We chose songs without any regard to their chart performance. The obscure ones hit us just as hard as the more popular songs — and all are ripe for re-imagining, re-interpreting, and re-inventing. Brian writes songs of beauty and loneliness and vulnerability better than anyone — and by sequencing them next to popular songs of confidence and love and fun, it creates a more complete picture of life on earth.”

Brian Wilson comments on Melt Away, “Zooey and Matt did such mind-blowing versions of our songs. The harmonies are beautiful and right on. I love this record!”

The album’s first single, Darlin’, comes replete with a QVC-inspired video directed by Lara Jean Gallagher. A perfect intro to the album, the Darlin’ clip finds the pair trading lead vocals while doing their best to sell nail polish to the masses.

Melt Away is Deschanel and Ward’s follow-up to 2016’s holiday album, Christmas Party, and it marks their second record of non-holiday covers since 2014’s Classics, which topped Billboard’s U.S. Folk Albums chart on release. It’s the latest display of remarkable talent from She & Him, who have wowed listeners for over 15 years with their gorgeous and warm indie-pop.

As Deschanel has maintained a successful acting career and Ward continued his own singular solo career as a producer and singer-songwriter, the duo continues to sound like the perfect match in the studio—with Zooey’s dramatic vocals excellently pairing with Matt’s textured, tuneful arrangements and production.

The band is on tour this year across North America, including a stop at the Vogue Theatre in Vancouver on June 18.
