The BRIT Awards become first UK awards show to create NFTs

0

The BRIT Awards, in partnership with eco-friendly NFT platform Serenade, have announced their first ever NFT collection to celebrate the 2022 award winners, following the ceremony on Tuesday 8th February at The O2 arena in London, broadcast exclusively on ITV and ITV Hub.

Designed by West Midlands-born digital artist MRE, who has worked with previous BRIT winners Dave and J Hus, this innovative collection of unique NFTs will commemorate the 2022 winning artists of categories including Artist of the Year, Best New Artist, Mastercard Album of the Year and the four new genre awards Alternative/Rock Act, Dance Act, Hip Hop/Grime/Rap Act and Pop/R&B Act.

This groundbreaking initiative will offer music fans the opportunity to own a piece of music history and get closer to the winning artists by owning an official digital collectible associated with this significant career milestone. The limited edition NFTs, which will cost just £10 each, will also give fans who collect them all the chance to win VIP tickets to next year’s BRIT Awards. The NFTs will be available from Wednesday 9th February, with purchases through credit or debit card over on serenade.co.

An NFT, or non-fungible token, is a unique digital asset with an individual identity that can be purchased for collection, trading or public display. NFTs cannot be faked or copied, giving each NFT intrinsic value for its owner. The BRITs will be the first ever UK awards show to partner with an NFT platform.

All proceeds raised from the sale of the NFTs will be donated to The BRIT Trust, the charity arm of The BRITs which distributes money raised from The BRIT Awards to organisations and charities that promote education and well-being through music, including The BRIT School and Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy.

Nominations for this year’s BRIT Awards were revealed before Christmas, with artists including Adele, Dave, Ed Sheeran, Little Simz, Sam Fender, Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, Central Cee amongst the nominees. The winner of the BRITs Rising Star award has already been announced as Holly Humberstone, who will perform at the ceremony, along with Dave, Doja Cat, Ed Sheeran, Liam Gallagher and Little Simz, with more names to be announced soon.

Luke Ferrar, Innovation Director, Polydor Records + Co-Chair of BRITs Digital Committee: “We wanted to find a new way for fans to commemorate their favourite Artists winning a BRIT award. Creating a unique NFT felt like an interesting and different approach, and by pricing them at a reasonable cost (£10 charity donation) it allows more people to enter the emerging space of blockchain/digital Art. MRE is an incredible digital artist and I hope these can be displayed and remembered for years to come and that it challenges conventional ways to own and share a moment with an Artist, at the same time raising money for charity.”

Giuseppe De Cristofano, Director of Digital, BRIT Awards + Co-Chair of BRITs Digital Committee: “NFTs are an exciting new space for The BRIT Awards, and we feel it is really important that we take this opportunity to help support charities such as Nordoff Robbins and The BRIT School through The BRIT Trust by pricing the collectibles at just £10. We’re really excited by the creative from MRE, and we can’t wait to see how fans engage with the collection and commemorate with artists after The BRITs on February 8th!”

Max Shand of Serenade, the NFT platform: “Serenade couldn’t be more excited to extend The BRIT Awards’ legacy of innovation and philanthropy into the NFT world with simplified eco-friendly digital collectibles, commemorating 2022’s award winners with digital trophies designed by the wonderful MRE. It’s a pleasure to work with such a credible and forward looking institution as The BRITs, and we look forward to a long, strategic partnership.”

Mastercard return as headline partner for the 24th year having supported The BRITs for over two decades, bringing cardholders closer to music through a range of Priceless BRITs experiences. This year, Mastercard will continue to sponsor the much sought after Mastercard Album award, as well as Song of the Year with Mastercard for the second time and is proud to carry on connecting people to priceless possibilities.

In an exciting first, fans will also be able to watch exclusive behind-the-scenes footage on the night on YouTube Shorts, a new short-form video experience right on YouTube, as well as listening to their favourite artists’ playlists on YouTube Music. YouTube Shorts sponsors the 2022 Artist of the Year award.

The BRIT Awards 2022 with Mastercard takes place Tuesday 8th February at The O2 arena, exclusively broadcast on ITV and ITV Hub and hosted by Mo Gilligan.

ASIA with original members Carl Palmer & Geoff Downes Announces 40th Anniversary Celebration.

0

ASIA, one of the greatest and best-loved supergroups to emerge during the 1980s is currently preparing for an extensive 40th Anniversary celebration kicking off in summer 2022. Featuring founding members Carl Palmer (ELP) and Geoff Downes (Yes, The Buggles) the group will also include long time bassist/ vocalist Billy Sherwood (Yes) and newest member, guitarist / lead vocalist Marc Bonilla, (Keith Emerson Band). The band is being booked for a US tour for the summer.

“40 years of ASIA is a real musical milestone for us,” says Geoff Downes. “The success we experienced with our early albums has carried us through and gave us the foundation when we reformed in 2006.  ASIA has been together since, although we lost John in 2017 to cancer. Still, we have endured and will carry on now with Marc Bonilla.”

The fans have never left ASIA,” says Carl Palmer. “That first ASIA album with all those radio and MTV hits  weaved the fabric of the music scene in the early 1980s. Those great songs like ‘Heat Of The Moment,’ and ‘Only Time Will Tell,’ still hold up today.”

In December ASIA released its most ambitious collection to date:  a 10-CD boxset The Official Live Bootlegs Volume 1 on BMG, which followed a previous 5 CD boxset of studio recordings released in April, 2021.

ABOUT ASIAGeoff Downes (Buggles, Yes, keyboards), Steve Howe (Yes, guitars), Carl Palmer (ELP drums) and John Wetton (King Crimson, bass/vocals), took the world by storm with their debut album, globally the biggest-selling album of 1982. The single Heat Of The Moment was a world-wide monster smash and the album spent an incredible 9 weeks at No.1. A second album, Alpha, was released in 1983, followed by Astra in 1985. The four original members reconvened in 2006 for a world tour, to celebrate the 25th anniversary and went on to release five albums. In 2012 Steve Howe stepped back from ASIA to concentrate on his work with Yes, followed by John Wetton’s treatment for cancer, a fight he sadly lost in 2017.

“We are planning an extensive tour to celebrate our 40th,” adds Downes, “and the music will feature all the hits the fans have embraced.  Stay tuned! It will be show you won’t want to miss.”

Richard Thompson’s “(Guitar, Vocal) A Collection Of Unreleased And Rare Material 1967-1976” Celebrated With 45th Anniversary Vinyl Reissue

Richard Thompson‘s 1976 album of (at the time) career-spanning retrospective unreleased recordings – (Guitar, Vocal) A Collection Of Unreleased and Rare Material 1967-1976 – will be reissued on double 180-gram vinyl March 25th in celebration of its 45th anniversary. Thankfully, this did not transpire to be Richard’s final piece of recorded work, but did become an essential record to fans of Richard’s work giving an alternate perspective on his early career. Following an almost two year hiatus, Richard and Linda returned and released ‘First Light (Richard and Linda Thompson album)’ in 1978 and Richard has remained a prolific songwriter and one of the most respected British folk artists of all time releasing, to date, 22 studio albums and 14 live albums.

Jazz Legend Eleanor Collins Gets Her Own Canada Post Stamp

0

Canada’s first lady of jazz Eleanor Collins is getting her own commemorative stamp.

The stamp features an illustration by David Belliveau based on photographs by Franz Lindner, CBC Still Photo Collection. The cover of the booklet features an enlargement of the stamp image; the inside includes a photo of Collins on the set of the television program Quintet on January 3, 1962, also by Lindner.

A living legend at 102 years old, Collins was born in Edmonton, Alberta, on November 21, 1919. She grew up singing gospel with her family before winning a talent contest at age 15 that ignited her musical career. Collins moved to Vancouver in the late 1930s, and her mesmerizing vocals and sophisticated style were soon gracing the stages of clubs and concert venues as well as on recordings and live radio broadcasts, alongside Canada’s top musicians.

Collins was a trailblazer – becoming the first female Canadian jazz artist (and one of the first Black performers in North America) to host a national television series, The Eleanor Show, in 1955. She hosted a second namesake TV series – Eleanor – in 1964.

Collins was determined to confront and combat racial prejudice by cultivating the principles of equality and acceptance through her professional work and her volunteer work. She appeared as both a lead and a guest on numerous TV and radio shows through the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s and was still performing in concert well into her 90s.

Collins has received several lifetime achievement awards and other accolades, including being appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in 2014.

Mike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs to return with new album External Combustion

0

Mike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs have announced they will release Campbell’s second album as a band leader, following their 2020 critically acclaimed debut album, Wreckless Abandon, on March 4. The new album, titled External Combustion showcases Campbell & The Dirty Knobs’ evolution, pushing the band to a new level, jumping ahead in vision and drive, proving the first record was no one-shot deal.

In celebration of the forthcoming record, Campbell & The Dirty Knobs are premiering their blistering garage-rock single, ‘Wicked Mind’, alongside a George Mays (My Morning Jacket, Brittany Howard, Chicano Batman) directed video.

Co-produced by Campbell and George Drakoulias (The Black Crowes, The Jayhawks), the 11-track album was recorded at Campbell’s home studio, Hocus Pocus Recorders in Los Angeles. External Combustion also features BMG songwriter Margo Price and Ian Hunter as well as piano from fellow Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers founding member Benmont Tench on ‘Lightning Boogie’. Although Campbell wrote most of the songs on the new album within the past year, two of the tracks had been written in the 90’s, only to be rediscovered in Campbell’s extensive vault of unreleased compositions.

Campbell recalled, “The band became this spontaneous type of combustion – to borrow a word. The longer we played, the more intuitive it got.”

The band will finally embark on their first-ever national tour this spring, featuring an extensive run of sold-out headlining shows. “The band’s too good,” said Campbell as he prepares for the upcoming tour. “And now we have two albums to draw from when writing setlists.”

The Dirty Knobs came together nearly two decades ago, after Campbell met guitarist Jason Sinay (Neil Diamond, Ivan Neville) at a session and liked the way their guitars sounded together. What began as a less structured project for Campbell in between The Heartbreakers’ touring became something else altogether when they added the rhythm section of bassist Lance Morrison (Don Henley) and drummer Matt Laug (Slash, Alanis Morrissette).

What followed was several years of intimate, almost incognito, performances in the band’s home base of Los Angeles and surrounding Southern California cities. After all those years playing together, it became clear The Dirty Knobs should take what they were doing to the next level. Following the passing of Campbell’s longtime compatriot, friend and bandmate Tom Petty and his performances with Fleetwood Mac on their 2018-2019 World Tour, The Dirty Knobs released their debut album Wreckless Abandon in 2020 to widespread acclaim.
