The First-Ever Collection Recognizing Motown Superstar Mary Wilson Is Available March 4

0

Singer, activist, author, fashion icon, actress, U.S. cultural ambassador, motivational speaker, dancer, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend, trailblazer, legend, Supreme: Mary Wilson earned her place in music history. She was the only original member of The Supremes in every incarnation of the groundbreaking group from beginning to end (1961 to 1977) but her story didn’t end when The Supremes did. Wilson the world-renowned performer was an advocate for social and economic challenges in the U.S. and abroad and used her fame and flair to promote diverse humanitarian efforts including ending hunger, raising HIV/AIDS awareness and encouraging world peace. October 11, 2018, The Music Modernization Act was passed. Mary played a key role in explaining its importance to members of Congress and how it directly affected artists. She was always fighting for artist rights and was seated in the Senate chambers when it unanimously passed.  She continued making music, performing to adoring fans around the world, wrote several best-selling books, and continued to protect artist rights and promote the legacy of the Supremes.

Now, the late legend’s remarkable legacy of music is being collected for the very first time in a deluxe 2-CD set. UMe is proud to present Mary Wilson’s The Motown Anthology. Slated for release on March 4, 2022, in celebration of her birthday March 6, this first-ever comprehensive overview of Wilson’s Motown discography presents 38 songs, including a whopping 33 tracks only available physically on this collection. The first track, “Falling In Love (Live at The Frontier January 13, 1970)” is available now for streaming and download, hereThe Motown Anthology boasts nearly two dozen Supremes classics, deep cuts, and never-before-heard songs (most in stunning new mixes) from a host of songwriters including Berry GordySmokey Robinson, Holland-Dozier-Holland, Deke RichardsBarry Mann and Cynthia WeilThom Bell and Linda Creed, and others. In addition to the worldwide CD debut of the 1979 Mary Wilson album, The Motown Anthology premieres on CD solo tracks produced by the late Gus Dudgeon, the first-time-available album version of Mary’s new single “Why Can’t We All Get Along,” and Eric Kupper’s remix of “Red Hot.” And, perhaps most intriguingly, the collection premieres seven songs that have not been heard anywhere: “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” and “Falling in Love with Love” from the unheard January 13 Supremes live performance at the Frontier; “Send Him to Me,” “If You Let Me Baby,” “Son of a Preacher Man,” “Witchi Tai To,” and “Anytime at All.”

The set was overseen by Turkessa Babich, Mary Wilson’s daughter, and Jay D. Schwartz, her longtime publicist, with its 44-page booklet stuffed with rare and previously unpublished color photos. The booklet also features detailed track annotations, and exclusive tributes to Mary from such luminaries as Dionne WarwickDarlene LoveOtis Williams, Duke Fakir, Martha ReevesClaudette RobinsonBrian and Edward HollandPaul McCartneyRita CoolidgeMerry ClaytonBrenda RussellBlinky Williams, and RuPaul. Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton has penned a special appreciation, as well, for this ultimate celebration of Supreme legend Mary Wilson.

The track was followed by a hugely popular social media campaign, #LetSilkSonicThrive, which earned them a debut live performance at the GRAMMY Awards (plus a powerful tribute to Little Richard) followed quickly by iconic live sets at the iHeartRadio Music Awards and the BET Awards.

“Leave The Door Open” became Silk Sonic’s first #1 single on the Billboard Hot 100, spending two non-consecutive weeks at #1 and 18 consecutive weeks in the top 10. In the meantime, their infectious jingle co-written and performed for SelvaRey Rum amassed widescale praise over the summer. The duo then coasted into their sophomore release of “Skate,” which saw them glide into a second top 10 hit on Billboards Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs as it debuted at #4 and began as the genre’s best-selling song of the week.

“Smokin Out The Window” arrived in November 2021 with Billboard noting how “Anderson .Paak and Bruno Mars take it all the way back to the 1970s Soul Train era in the retro video. [It]finds them going through their choreo on an old school TV set while rocking wide lapel tuxedo jackets.” Following the vibey single, the duo released the critically acclaimed album, An Evening With Silk Sonic. Silk Sonic is officially GRAMMY nominated with their debut hit and 2021 summertime anthem, “Leave The Door Open,” earning four 2022 GRAMMY Awards nominations in Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best R&B Performance, and Best R&B Song categories.

Singer-Songwriter Derek Helm Laments Lost Love And Times Gone By With “Gone to the Sea”

0

Universally, lost love is a difficult thing to come to terms with, but singer/songwriter Derek Helm is making it a little bit easier with the release of his beachy, sun-soaked new single, “Gone to the Sea.”

Starring a plugged-in acoustic guitar, ukulele, and some very smooth saxophone, “Gone to the Sea” tells the wistful story of taking beachside vacations with a lover — only for that love to have slipped away.

We used to go out every Saturday night
Mix margaritas and sway in the moonlight
Man, I miss that blue agave gaze
I wish I could go back and re-live those days

With its easy beats, languid pace, and seamless vocal harmonies, there’s a Beach Boys’ “Kokomo” vibe to the song; however, it was Bruce Springsteen’s “Hungry Heart” that originally served as inspiration. Helm and his band had wanted to record a cover of The Boss’s 1980 hit, though they never ended up getting around to it. “But I had already come up with some of the music and arrangement for it, and using that as the foundation, I started to write the lyrics to ‘Gone to the Sea’ over the music,” Helm shares. “So, thank you, Bruce!”

“Gone to the Sea” isn’t based on Helm’s personal experience of a breakup, but rather on some of his memories of beach vacations with his then-girlfriend, now wife, when they used to go out and drink margaritas and sing karaoke together. “The song Is mostly rooted in fond memories despite its lost-love story,” he says.

The beachy sound of the song, however, is a natural offshoot of Helm’s usual songwriting process. “Often when I’m writing, depending on the song, I’m imagining an alternate tropical, magical, enchanted world,” he continues. “I think it’s sort of an extension of how I romanticize Florida a little bit — more specifically South Florida. This was the case for ‘Gone to the Sea.’”

The song features Helm on lead vocals/acoustic guitar; Sam King on drums/backing vocals; Adam Haupt on bass/saxophone; Easton Summas on Electric Guitar; and Jesse Gelndinning on ukulele/backing vocals.

Derek Helm is a South Florida native. He was born in Miami and grew up in a small but growing town called Jupiter in Palm Beach County, Florida. After college, he worked for a year as a touring sound engineer and hired musician based out of Pennsylvania. The stint was formative for him as an artist, though it spurred in him a longing to be back in the tropical South Florida climate. During this time, Helm would listen to Jimmy Buffett as a warm remedy for being homesick. He then moved back to Florida, formed a band with his best friend from first grade, and established a studio and rehearsal space. He eventually began performing solo gigs at a beachside resort, which further helped him develop his own sound.

“Gone to the Sea” is available now.
