Broken Social Scene Announce Career-Spanning Rarities Compilation “Old Dead Young: B-sides & Rarities”

0

Toronto indie rock collective Broken Social Scene announced Old Dead Young: B-Sides & Rarities, a career-spanning collection of B-sides, rarities, and outtakes pulled from 20 years of 7-inches, compilations, soundtracks, and hard-to-find releases. Fans can pre-order the album and stream the first single “This House Is On Fire”, a lush and heartbreaking dream pop track taken from the 2009 Forgiveness Rock Record recording sessions.

Once a two-person basement recording project, Broken Social Scene came to life onstage as a shadowy improvisational entity with a revolving-door roster, each concert a wholly unique experience dependent on the room, the weather, what they ate for dinner that night, and who was dropping in to play. Where the band’s 2001 debut album, Feel Good Lost, presented BSS as an anonymous ambient project that reflected its humble, homespun origins, their electrifying live performances from that era rallied an extended family of performers with roots in post-rock (Justin Peroff; Do Make Say Think’s Charles Spearin), Latin jazz (Andrew Whiteman), art-folk (Feist), synth-pop (Amy Millan and Evan Cranley, also of Stars), dance-punk (Metric’s Emily Haines and Jimmy Shaw), and country rock (Jason Collett).

But by pursuing improvisational freedom over commercial considerations, Broken Social Scene set a new gold standard for indie rock in the 21st century with 2002’s You Forgot It In People, an album that pushed the genre far beyond its noisy ’90s slacker roots toward a more sonically expansive, emotionally expressive vision. And with follow up releases like the blissfully chaotic Broken Social Scene (2005), the rapturous Forgiveness Rock Record (2010), and the intricate, insidiously melodic Hug of Thunder (2017), Broken Social Scene have amassed a thrillingly amorphous, unpredictable body of work. Old Dead Young: B-Sides & Rarities is everything that happened in between.

Dan Mangan Announces 2022 Canadian Tour Dates

0

Today, Dan Mangan is ready to announce that he’s returning to the road for a string of tour dates throughout Canada beginning February 25. Artist presale will begin tomorrow, December 7, followed by general public onsale on Friday, December 10 here. All dates are listed below.

Recently, we marked the 10th anniversary of Dan’s pivotal, JUNO Award winning album, Oh Fortune. The LP has been re-released and arrives complete with a bonus disc of ten ‘mostly’ unheard album outtakes, demos, and live versions of tracks from that era. In an essay reminiscing about the making of Oh Fortune, Mangan says:

Four years of thought and trial-by-fire manifested in the creation of Nice, Nice, Very Nice. I’d spent that time cutting my teeth in the corners of noisy bars to people who were there for the drinks and, almost specifically, not for the music. My presence was not anticipated, but, more accurately – tolerated. Sometimes I’d had other musicians with me, but most often, I was alone. I felt like a comedian, chiseling my material in the underground. Figuring out what kept people, and what didn’t. I had to earn every perked ear. I played cafes, living rooms, back yards, sports bars – literally anywhere that would have me.”

“Oh Fortune was born of a different kind of storm,” continues Mangan. “Luckily, Nice, Nice, Very Nice had succeeded. Those bars became theatres, and the momentum of a burgeoning career demanded a more consistent cast of faces in the van.

I knew that I had learned how to hold an audience. I knew that I had begun to unfold my mind through lyrics and melody.Oh Fortune is about changing. Shifting. Adjusting to new footholds in new sands. Finding glory in letting go. Surviving another day and being a touch stronger for it. It’s about dangling your legs for the sharks. It’s about stories to tell as we age. It’s about aching for rain. It’s about the taste of something. It’s about the veins of a leaf mirroring the rivers of its forest. It’s about flags burning together. It’s about the daylight forgiving you.”

Paul McCartney And Jack McCoy Team Up With Surfrider Foundation Australia For lidin’ (Eob Remix)”

0

Paul McCartney has once again collaborated with filmmaker Jack McCoy, spreading awareness of the importance of protecting our coastlines by dedicating his new “Slidin’ (EOB Remix)” video to ocean charity Surfrider Foundation Australia.

Paul McCartney and Jack McCoy have collaborated a number of times over the past decade, and whenever they do their mutual love of the ocean is always the focus.

In December 2020, McCartney released his GRAMMY-nominated McCartney III album, featuring “Slidin’”—a track he felt would be perfectly accompanied by some surfing and ocean footage and turned to McCoy to see if he could lend a hand.

“As soon as I heard the song I said to myself ‘Craig Anderson’,” McCoy said. “I called on some of Craig’s friends to provide me with some amazing footage  and made what became the official video for the track.

“With Paul’s blessing, Craig and I chose to dedicate the video to Surfrider Foundation to help beat the drum with their ongoing fight for our coastline, in particular the current fight to STOP PEP11, a proposal to drill for oil and gas off the NSW coastline.”

A few months later McCoy got wind that McCartney was about to release McCartney III Imagined, a full album reinterpretation of McCartney III curated by Paul himself and featuring a diverse selection of friends, fans and brand new acquantaintances —  including Anderson .Paak, Beck, Dominick Fike, Phoebe Bridgers, St. Vincent and of course EOB a/k/a Ed O’Brien of Radiohead.

“Ed O’Brien from Radiohead produced a pumped-up version of ‘Slidin’’ which I thought would be perfect to make another surfing video as sort of a bookend to the first,” says McCoy.

“Doing this remix for Paul was a lot of fun,” O’Brien said. “The winter was dark and a second lockdown was imminent, but working on this track with Paul Epworth was a moment of light. So good to get those stems and hear those vocals… great drums too… all instruments played by Paul! We took inspiration from an earlier song of his—basically we were trying to ‘Helter Skelter’-it up! Great video and collaboration with the Surfrider Foundation…”

At his recent Surf Talk and Jam Tour, McCoy was introduced to film maker Tyge Landa and began collaborating on McCoy’s latest opportunity with McCartney, which features 9 of the world’s best free surfers also in support of Surfrider Foundation Australia.

“Surfrider Foundation is humbled to collaborate on this project with music, film and surfing royalty. ’Slidin” captures the surfing spirit beautifully, and the clip has been a huge help in spreading Surfrider Foundation’s message that we must all help protect our oceans and coastlines,” says Damien Cole, Surfrider Foundation National Campaign Director.
The official “Slidin’ (EOB Remix)” video launch is accompanied by a series of “making of” videos featuring McCoy and Landa, as well as some of the surfers—all of which can be seen at surfrider.org.au. Be sure to sign the petition for Surfrider’s Stop PEP 11 campaign while you are there.

MADISON OLDS Gets Ready To Spend “Christmas At Home”

0

Every so often, an inventive artist sets out to challenge the norm when it comes to the merriest genre of music, and award-winning, stream-soaring, chart-climbing Kamloops, BC-born now Vancouver, BC-based pop singer/songwriter Madson Olds does just that with her newly minted holiday bop, “Christmas At Home” — available now.

The perfect duet for sipping hot toddies by the fire with friends, the song is in collaboration with Nearly York (Lucas Gienow); the pair paint a seasonal portrait epitomizing the joy found in hiding out at home, avoiding the crowds and holiday chaos — until the family arrives, that is!

Incorporating the jingling of sleigh bells, a Jason Mraz-sounding plucking vibe, and an up-tempo finger snap percussion, the song is a beautiful blend of Olds’ and Gienow’s gorgeous harmonizing vocals. Referencing ‘Grandpa Steve’ and poking jabs at Grandma and the reindeer incident,’ the cheerful, light-hearted track also features Olds’ father playing trumpet during the bridge — tying the family-friendly record together neatly with a bow.

“The song wasn’t originally about being stuck at home,” Olds reveals. “It was going to be a more classic angle before Lucas joked that sometimes, being amid the holiday chaos and trying to meet family expectations is very overwhelming, and there is peace and yuletide glee to be found in those quiet moments alone.

“This song was also born out of the idea that sometimes we forget we don’t all live those perfect ‘Hallmark movie’ Christmas moments, and that many people share Christmases with multiple families, or experience one alone, or endure complicated scenarios.

“It kind of also represents the thoughts from two different families and how they experience Christmas,” the Bell Media “Future Star” adds.

Olds has become a mainstay in the Canadian music industry, rising rapidly to the top with her infectious pop songwriting and performing ability. Her debut EP, Drowning In My Thoughts, dropped summer of 2021 and went on to amass more than 2+ million streams — hosting a conglomerate of hit singles, including “Best Part of Me,” which reached #22 on Billboard’s Emerging Canadian Artists Chart.

The songstress has earned her way to the opening slots for mega stars Kacey Musgraves, Willie Nelson, Scott Helms, and more, and it was Olds who penned “Moments in the Mountains” for Kamloops’ 2018 BC Winter Games — which would later be selected as the soundtrack for the Fairmont Pacific Rim in Vancouver, BC. She’d follow that success with “Thank You,” an anthem dedicated to life after heartbreak, in whatever form it happens; the song launched Olds onto the Hot AC Charts in Canada, rewarding her with Top 10 accolades with CBC’s Searchlight 2019, and international showcases with Music Matters in Singapore.

A true philanthropist and animal rights activist, Olds has been making waves across socials not solely from her music, but also her desire to fight for causes she holds near and dear to her heart — including stem cell research with Bioxcellerator in Colombia, a biotech company aiding in the assistance of Olds’ partner who lives with a severed spine, by raising nearly 100k on TikTok. Olds has also leant herself to the rescuing of the often poorly-treated Pitbull breed (in which she has personally rescued four herself) by providing time assisting and raising funds for the SPCA. Additionally, Olds has utilized her platform to raise awareness of Mental Health by creating the PoCo Candle line, and sharing about mental health in the media and during Bell Let’s Talk Day.

Madison Olds and Nearly York’s new single, “Christmas At Home,” is available now!
