“This was one of the most organic, whimsical records I’ve ever written; all things considered, it could have been a wrestling match to make music at all. We were forced to think about what we really wanted and where we wanted to go. We thought about time and how precious it was and is. We baked, walked, thought, read, and watched our way into a big, altered state. We remade our lives and cast aside trivial unimportant things.
All the songs on Descendant came out of a place of gratitude. Working again with Russell Broom after a lengthy separation was magical for both of us. Two producers, a pandemic, a lesson in my own personal history and looking at all of it through a kinder lens.
We all come from a long line of incredibly strong people. Women, in particular, my ancestors, I am in debt to. I don’t know how they survived being pioneers, constantly forging onward through impossible situations. It’s all very heartbreaking. These songs are about who I am and what I’m made of. A new beginning to an old story.”

Montreal’s Alt-Folk RedFox Soothe Anxious Minds with New Single and Album
Canadian experimental alt-folk group RedFox are set to soothe anxious minds and reinforce personal journeys with the release of their new single, “Mellow Out” and album Stranger Love — available now.
Blending traditional folk motifs with an ambient electronic sound, the Montreal-based band spin traditional instruments like the banjo, violin, and acoustic guitar on their heads, fusing conventional bluegrass rhythms with alternative rock-based guitar and vocals — inventively applying them to modern electronic production in a way that maintains the sound’s soul and skill.
With two previous EP releases — 2018’s self-titled RedFox and 2019’s Recovery — as well as numerous singles and festival appearances to their credit, folk troubadours Jono Townsend and Tim Loten, vocalist and fiddle virtuoso Daphnee Vandal, metal drummer Sam Neumann, and prog-rock bassist Sam Robinson up the ante of their inimitable offerings with Stranger Love in a way they sense many can relate to.
“Inspired by our personal and collective life experiences, our goal with this production was to create a compilation that pushed the boundaries of the genre,” Loten shares. “It’s not always easy to make our various instruments and creative visions cooperate; we demand a lot of compromise from each other musically, and that really shows in these songs.
“It’s a dark album,” he continues. “Daphnee has never been shy about writing real, honest lyrics, and I think people will get a lot of meaning out of it.”
“It’s a song about trying to feel normal and function in everyday life,” Vandal explains of “Mellow Out” and its origins. “But… Our good friend ‘anxiety’ seems to be kicking around every corner.”
Their debut full-length, the 12-track tome takes a sequential sojourn of sorts through themes of mental health and personal growth — arm wrestling with inner struggles through to self-safety, and every personal battle in between. “Stranger Love’s opening track, ‘Play,’ is about the fight with the mind,” Vandal reveals. “From there, it goes into first warnings that something dark is clouding it all in ‘Sleep,’ before seeing the signs in ‘Shiver.’
“As song #4, ’Mellow Out’ is where we say ‘it’s fine,’ and ‘Circles’ becomes this insanity-meets-repetition cycle where we know nothing about any of this is ‘normal’ and we acknowledge an introspective conclusion; that reality is a more pessimistic existence than once imagined.”
Halfway through the release, by track #6 — “Runaway” — Vandal’s lyricism questions concepts of escapism. “Here is where we find strength, and experience a happier side of self-realization. Even though personal disappointments are faced, there’s a potential to shed that which makes for unhappiness, in all different facets of life: physical, emotional, or both.”
With night comes day, and soon “Try” swoops in to lay the darker side of self-realization plainly. “It’s about the acceptance of failure,” Vandal muses. “It’s about how devastating it can be to give everything you have to something that inevitably doesn’t work.
“It’s here where the clouds of one’s own haze and ‘rainbow mood’ part, sort of like a daydream, in ‘Hey Mister,’” she continues. “We start to see that everyone else is struggling too, and start to become free.
“‘Can’t You See’ is a song about the acceptance of realization and the desire to make choices that move forward, and ‘Invisible’ is about experiencing freedom while doused in the memories of greater times; it’s about discovering one’s meaningful meaninglessness.
“Song #11 — ‘Takes One to Know One’ — is where it all makes sense, and we realize we were never alone. The album’s closing track, ‘Sewn,’ is a reflection of the sad, but honest truth: we feel safe here.”
Stranger Love’s album art expresses how duality is the reigning constant through colour, composition, and emotionality; how, much like two sides of a coin, you need both for it to be complete. Biron, the band’s vision for the visual was to convey the duality of softness and intensity, haze and definition, dark and light, foreboding and providence…

With the Windy City as its Backdrop, Indie Rockers bluefront Say It’s “High Time” for Love
Indie rock band bluefront says it’s “High Time” to get things right in this, their new single and video — available now.
The Windy City-based four-piece is fronted by long-time musician, turned-lawyer, turned-professional musician, Alan Zreczny. Since being a child, Zreczny has had an enduring love for music, saying, “I always thought of being a musician and writing songs as the most fulfilling modes of self-expression.”
It would be several years, (and one bad relationship break-up later) that would find Zreczny in a new-found chance of possibility to see a childhood dream come true. From penning poetry that would eventually wind itself into guitar licks and melodies, Zreczny test drove his songwriting skills into finely composed tunes he debuted at a variety of coffee houses and open mics. Soon, after, he would fill out the bluefront band with long-time collaborator Jason Steele on guitar (who would aid in dropping Zreczny’s debut album, The Arbor Sessions), Nick Kabat (drums), and Mark Burns (bass).
“I know everyone says this, but it’s true — I really love the band. My favorite part of the whole thing is bringing in a new song and watching what happens, how it changes and how it feels all based on what Jason, Nick and Mark do,” Zreczny says.
After a variety of gigs and showcases, including The House Cafe, Uncommon Ground, and more, the band set to follow up Zreczny’s debut album, releasing Aftershocks in 2019. Recorded at Electrical Audio by Scott Steinman, mixed at GardenView Sound Studio by Scott Steinman for Studiomedia Recording and mastered by Matthew Barnhart at Chicago Mastering Services, this is definitely one for the headphones, too.
Aftershocks would produce a series of fan favourites, including “High Time”. And this year, the group opted to have a go at the beloved track’s visual counterpart.
“When thinking about a video for ‘High Time’, we wanted to feature our great hometown of Chicago while expressing the sentiments of the underlying story,” Zreczny explains.
The video follows Zreczny through a winding cat and mouse chase with a gorgeous brunette through-out the city’s urban landscape. As he continues to pursue her and her coy, teasing smile, Zreczny lovingly chants, “it’s high time we get this right,” in his signature, warbling, intimate vox that defines bluefront as a whole. And as our protagonist scans the city streets in an effort to woo the damsel ahead of him, his final clue to finding her results in him meeting up with his bluefront bandmates for a roof-top jam session.
“The director, Aleksei Borovikov, and I came up with a frantic but determined ‘journey’ through the city in search of whatever the narrator in the song is looking for,” Zreczny reveals, adding, “whether it be someone or something and then, ultimately, contentment and peace of mind.”
It’s high time you take a view through the “High Time” video. The throw and catch twist at the end of the video, mashed with the ever-beautiful love letter to Chicago’s concrete jungle, will make you wonder what took you so long to visit the city – and the band.
