Tiktok Star Reiley Soars With “Superman” Single And Video

0

Rising pop sensation Reiley has premiered his highly anticipated sophomore single “Superman,” arriving today alongside a compelling self-directed video companion. The track marks the latest offering from his forthcoming debut EP, brb, having an identity crisisarriving October 27th via Atlantic Records.

Co-written by Reiley, “Superman” sees the him tearfully confront the ripple effect of addiction on his family. “It’s a song about disappointment,” he admits. “It explores my relationship with my father. He’s struggled with alcoholism. Before I got signed, his addiction got so bad it almost broke up our family. When I wrote ‘Superman,’ I had so many emotions bottled up: pain, resentment, fear, empathy, pity. Even a sense of loss. Above all I was so incredibly disappointed. I grew up idolizing my father and thought he was infallible. But he’s only human. I think the realization that your parents can do wrong is always scary.”

Born to remote origins in the Faroe Islands (about 200 miles north of the UK with a population of just over 50,000 people), Reiley quietly made a global impact with an exuberant presence as loud as his traffic-stopping voice and as colorful as his runway-ready aesthetic. During 2020, he embraced TikTok (@reiley) as a way to connect with listeners far and wide. Against a colorful backdrop, he belted hits into a silver mic practically floating in front of him, ultimately generating nearly 1 billion views, inciting 128 million likes, and attracting nearly 11 million followers.

“Superman” follows Reiley’s infectious debut single “Let It Ring” – which was deemed “already historic” by PAPER upon release earlier this year, in addition to receiving praise from the likes of Billboard, Cosmopolitan, Flaunt & more. The track, penned/produced by Lostboy (Zedd, Bebe Rexha), Lauren Aquilina (Rina Sawayama, Olivia O’Brien) & JHart (Jennifer Lopez, Camila Cabello), features the first-ever licensed sample of the instantly recognizable official iPhone ringtone and has picked up an incredible 10 million plus streams in addition to over 2 million YouTube views since its release.

The singer, songwriter, director, producer, and personality properly tells his story in his own words on his forthcoming brb, having an identity crisis EP, and much more to come in 2021. “As an artist, it’s my job to bare my soul and reveal my true self,” he explains. “I hope, if you’ve had similar experiences to mine, you can find comfort in knowing you’re not alone. At the end of the day, that’s really why I’m here.”

Depeche Mode To Release High Definition Version of “101” Doc Film With Unreleased Performance Footage

0

On December 3 Depeche Mode will release a newly upgraded expanded definitive box set edition of 101 documentary concert film and live album chronicling the 101st and final performance of the band’s Music For The Masses world tour, recorded live at the Pasadena Rose Bowl on June 18, 1988.

A groundbreaking collaborative documentary, 101 was co-directed by acclaimed husband-and-wife filmmaking team D.A. Pennebaker (Dont Look Back) and Chris Hegedus (The War Room) with active creative input from Depeche Mode, who’d held an exclusive contest for fans offering an appearance in a Depeche Mode movie as the prize. 101‘s narrative through-line of contest winners traveling across America to attend Depeche Mode’s landmark Rose Bowl concert is a cinematic precursor to the youth culture trend in “reality tv” programming. Depeche Mode’s 101 captures the electrifying synergy between the band and their fans.

This new HD edition of 101: A film by D.A. Pennebaker, Chris Hegedus, David Dawkins has been meticulously upgraded using 4k scans of the original film reels to create an all-new viewing experience.

The 101 Blu-ray includes three previously unseen bonus performances of “A Question of Lust,” “Sacred” and “Something To Do” plus the official promotional video for “Everything Counts.”

Additional contents in the new, limited edition Depeche Mode 101 box set include: a 48 page behind-the-scenes story of the day photo book; a 20″ x 30″ replica of original US theatrical release movie poster; a 16 page Anton Corbijn Photo Mode book as featured in the original album release; a double CD of the original 20 track 101 concert release; and a Download Card providing access to 4K downloads of the film and bonus performances plus 24-bit audio files of the 101 concert release. The two DVDs in the set contain the original extras from the 2003 DVD release of Depeche Mode – 101, which are exclusive to the DVD discs.

“It’s incredible to be able to see D.A. Pennebaker’s film and this period of our career presented in this new high-definition light,” said Depeche Mode.

“We were thrilled to partner with Sony Music on the digital restoration of Depeche Mode 101, definitely one of our all-time favorite films and one of our favorite filmmaking experiences,” said 101 co-director Chris Hegedus. “DM 101‘s parallel realities following the historic tour of this pioneering British band as they storm across America bringing an exciting new sound to the masses, along with an intimate view of a bus load of ardent young fans on an unforgettable road trip to the Rose Bowl made this documentary a groundbreaking influence on the reality genre. Making this movie was a grand adventure for both of us (Pennebaker and Hegedus)…. By the end of the tour, we became their biggest fans. We are excited to introduce this new release to audiences.”

In 2020 Depeche Mode released SPiRiTS in the Forest which Forbes described as “the new gold standard for concert films,” with director and longtime collaborator Anton Corbijn. This was recorded at the close of the record-breaking two-year Global Spirit Tour, which saw the band play to over 3 million fans at 115 shows around the world. In November they closed the year with their induction into the legendary Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

David Bowie’s “Toy” Album Set To Be Released

0

Parlophone Records/ISO Records are proud to announce two David Bowie landmarks: 26th November 2021 will see the release of DAVID BOWIE 5. BRILLIANT ADVENTURE (1992 – 2001), the fifth in a series of box sets chronicling his career from 1969 to the 21st century. Then on 7th January 2022, the day before David’s birthday, TOY (TOY:BOX) will receive its long awaited official release, finally making the legendary previously unreleased album available in three CD / six 10” vinyl versions.

The latest in an award-winning and critically acclaimed series of box sets including DAVID BOWIE 1. FIVE YEARS (1969 – 1973), DAVID BOWIE 2. WHO CAN I BE NOW? (1974 – 1976), DAVID BOWIE 3. A NEW CAREER IN A NEW TOWN (1977 – 1982) and DAVID BOWIE 4. LOVING THE ALIEN (1983-1988), DAVID BOWIE 5. BRILLIANT ADVENTURE (1992 – 2001) is an eleven CD box, eighteen-piece vinyl set and standard digital download box set. The collection is named after the Koto led instrumental penultimate track from the ‘hours…’ album. The box sets include newly remastered versions, with input from the original producers and collaborators, of some of Bowie’s most underrated and experimental material: BLACK TIE WHITE NOISE, THE BUDDHA OF SUBURBIA (available on vinyl for the first time in nearly 30 years), 1.OUTSIDEEARTHLING and ‘hours…’ along with the expanded live album BBC RADIO THEATRE, LONDON, JUNE 27, 2000, the non-album / alternative version / B-sides and soundtrack music compilation RE:CALL 5 and the legendary previously unreleased TOY.

TOY was recorded following David’s triumphant Glastonbury 2000 performance. Bowie entered the studio with his band, Mark Plati, Sterling Campbell, Gail Ann Dorsey, Earl Slick, Mike Garson, Holly Palmer and Emm Gryner, to record new interpretations of songs he’d first recorded from 1964-1971. David planned to record the album ‘old school’ with the band playing live, choose the best takes and then release it as soon as humanly possible in a remarkably prescient manner. Unfortunately, in 2001 the concept of the ‘surprise drop’ album release and the technology to support it were still quite a few years off, making it impossible to release TOY, as the album was now named, out to fans as instantly as David wanted. In the interim, David did what he did best; he moved on to something new, which began with a handful of new songs from the same sessions and ultimately became the album HEATHEN, released in 2002 and now acknowledged as one of his finest moments.

Now twenty years after its originally planned release, David’s co-producer Mark Plati says, “Toy is like a moment in time captured in an amber of joy, fire and energy. It’s the sound of people happy to be playing music. David revisited and re-examined his work from decades prior through prisms of experience and fresh perspective – a parallel not lost on me as I now revisit it twenty years later. From time to time, he used to say ‘Mark, this is our album’ – I think because he knew I was so deeply in the trenches with him on that journey. I’m happy to finally be able to say it now belongs to all of us”.
Available in 3CD or 6×10” vinyl formats, TOY (TOY:BOX) is a special edition of the TOY album. The ‘capture the moment’ approach of the recording sessions are extended to the sleeve artwork designed by Bowie featuring a photo of him as a baby with a contemporary face. The package also contains a 16-page full-colour book featuring previously unseen photographs by Frank Ockenfels 3.

The seeds of TOY were first sown in 1999 during the making of an episode of VH-1 Storytellers. David wanted to perform something from his pre-‘Space Oddity’ career, so he reached back to 1966 and dusted off  ‘Can’t Help Thinking About Me’ for the first time in thirty years. The song remained in the setlist for the short promotional tour for the ‘hours…’ album, and in early 2000 David and producer Mark Plati compiled a list of some of Bowie’s earliest songs to re-record.

TOY finishes with a new song from which the album takes its title, ‘Toy (Your Turn To Drive)’ was constructed from a jam at the end of one of the live takes of ‘I Dig Everything’. The track is based around rearranged sections of Sterling Campbell’s drums, Gail Ann Dorsey’s bass and sections of Mike Garson’s piano were looped along with a guitar line of Earl Slick’s that was sampled, time stretched and used as a repeating figure. Lastly, some of Holly and Emm’s backing vocals from the body of ‘Dig Everything’ were cut up and reassembled. Producer Mark Plati “As it was culled from ‘I Dig Everything’ it makes sense to bookend the album with this track – it’s also a fitting postscript to the TOY era”.

Included in TOY:BOX is a second CD/set of 10”s of alternative mixes and versions including proposed B-Sides (versions of David’s debut single ‘Liza Jane’ and 1967’s ‘In The Heat Of The Morning’), later mixes by Tony Visconti and the ‘Tibet Version’ of ‘Silly Boy Blue’ recorded at The Looking Glass Studio time at the of the 2001 Tibet House show in New York featuring Philip Glass on piano and Moby on guitar.

The third CD/set of 10”s features ‘Unplugged & Somewhat Slightly Electric’ mixes of thirteen TOY tracks. Producer Mark Plati “While we were recording the basic tracks Earl Slick suggested that he and I overdub acoustic guitars on all the songs. He said this was a Keith Richards’ trick, sometimes these guitars would be a featured part of the track, and at other times they’d be more subliminal. Later while mixing, David heard one of the songs broken down to just vocals and acoustic guitars; this gave him the idea that we ought to do some stripped-down mixes like that and that maybe one day they’d be useful. Once we put a couple of other elements in the pot, it felt like it could be a completely different record. I was only too happy to finish that thought some two decades after the fact”.
Exclusive to DAVID BOWIE 5. BRILLIANT ADVENTURE (1992 – 2001) box set are BBC RADIO THEATRE, LONDON, JUNE 27, 2000 and RE:CALL 5. The former was recorded two days after the famous Glastonbury performance in front of 500 lucky fans at the BBC’s art deco theatre in central London. Selections from the show were available as the third CD in a very limited 3CD edition of BOWIE AT THE BEEB in September 2000 but the full concert has never before been available on vinyl. RE:CALL 5 features 39 non-album / alternative version / b-sides and soundtrack songs over 3CDs and 4LPs.

The physical box set’s accompanying book, 84 pages in the CD box and 128 in the vinyl set, will feature rarely seen and previously unpublished photos by photographers including Frank W. Ockenfels 3, Nick Knight, John Scarisbrick and Nina Schultz Terner and others, as well as memorabilia, technical notes about the albums from producers/engineers Brian Eno, Nile Rodgers, Reeves Gabrels and Mark Plati as well as a new an interview with THE BUDDHA OF SUBURBIA collaborator Erdal Kizilçay.

The CD box set will include faithfully reproduced mini-vinyl versions of the original albums where applicable, and the CDs will be gold coloured rather than the usual silver. The vinyl box set has the same content as the CD set and is pressed on audiophile quality 180g vinyl.

In an urgent call-to-action to address injustices and atrocities that have plagued Indigenous communities for centuries, Toronto, ON-based rock band Imperial Ashes dive to new lyrical depths to shine a blinding light on neocolonialism in this, their new song, “A Toxic Life” — available now.

Continuing to craft a soundscape that is fresh, yet familiar, it’s their fourth single released under the guided stewardship of multi-Grammy-winning producer David Bottrill (Muse, Rush, Tool), and accomplished music engineer/mixer Michael Phillips (Stone Sour, Between the Buried and Me).

“A Toxic Life” is inspired by the personal journey of the band’s lead vocalist, Rayna Elizabeth; she chose to re-examine Canadian history after Dr. Ian Mosby published his work about government-sanctioned research conducted forcefully on starving Indigenous children. “He showed that First Nations people were used by the Canadian government as unwitting subjects in experiments so that scientists and bureaucrats could gain knowledge about malnutrition to further their political and professional interests.” The research would not only change her settler perspective on her homeland forever, but would also tie-in with the band’s overall theme of highlighting injustices.

Armed with raw, instrumental talent, and stellar production value, Imperial Ashes have taken the stereotypical trappings of a hard rock/metal band and burned them to the ground. Along with the band’s signature sound, Rayna’s visceral lyrics pull no punches in calling out government hypocrisy and spotlighting the genocidal atrocities that have, and continue to occur, across Canada.

“Attawapiskat is screaming, you cover your ears
Poisoning water, Wet’suwet’en fears
Sterilization, your genocidal sins
No concern of yours to find the M.M.I. Women”

Imperial Ashes is challenging the status quo by harnessing the incredible power of rock to bring consciousness to a genre of music typically chastised for promoting controversy and vulgarity. Sophisticated metal compositions seamlessly weave through cerebral conversations on the fight for social justice and equality.

The unapologetic urgency with which Imperial Ashes speak on human rights abuses coincides with the band’s origins; a community activist for the past several years, it was during her master’s thesis research on wealth inequality and stigma that Rayna became inspired to make a difference using her voice with an incomparable passion and conviction alongside a band of skilled sonic assassins.

The dramatic new single from Imperial Ashes, “A Toxic Life,” is available now.

Oct 2: Feist, Tom Wilson, Dave Bidini, Rik Emmett, Michie Mee & More Headline NewsAid in Support of West End Phoenix Newspaper

0

Rheostatics, Rik Emmett, Michie Mee, Tom Wilson, Feist, Hawksley Workman, Zaki Ibrahim, Tara Slone, Daniel Greaves, Charlotte Cornfield, The Mercenaries, and more are all on board for this Fall’s NewsAid — a fundraiser in support of iconic non-profit community newspaper, West End Phoenix. Get your tickets here: NewsAid: A Benefit to Support West End Phoenix.

Taking place Saturday, October 2nd at Junction Craft Brewery, doors open wide at 2:00pm to also welcome the likes of Stephen Stanley, Ansley Simpson, Dave Robinson, Gentleman Reg, Randy Ray, Wax Mannequin, Ensign Broderick, Andrew and Sam Cash, Lucas Silveira, Sleahy, Mike Ford, Dave Wall, Selena Evangeline, and Darryl Webster to the fold in what promises to be a full-throated afternoon in support of the long-lauded publication. The all-ages show requires proof of double vaccination to attend. It is currently sold out but organizers are hoping to release a new lot of tickets in the coming weeks.

Helmed by Rheostatics’ Dave Bidini, the West End Phoenix first went to print in 2017, and has since platformed a wide cross-section of contributors, from emerging voices to established mainstays like Chief Ladybird, Margaret Atwood, Michael Winter, Claudia Dey, Roddy Doyle, Eternity Martis, and more.

“After 40 years as a rhythm guitar player and writer, this is me now: a local newspaper publisher,” Bidini nods. “Go figure.

“Honestly, when we started the West End Phoenix five years ago, we had no idea if we’d last beyond our first publishing cycle,” he continues. “But seeing the original involvement of the community, and the verve of the writers and photographers, we knew that if we could stay alive in the beginning, we might have a chance.”

Bolstered by widespread support both through subscriptions and fundraising events, from both its local neighbourhood, the city-at-large, and beyond, the NewsAid benefit couldn’t be more timely; West End Phoenix has seen an uptick in interest in the increasing rapid-fire of current and pressing events.

“The whole world has circled back to local concerns and awareness, and we were a little ahead of that trend,” Bidini shares, reflecting on the past 18-month news cycle in particular. “Also, I think people have been a little wearied — and suspicious of — getting news on their phones and other devices. Having people they trusted making a paper in their community went a long way towards re-establishing that bond between ‘reader and paper.’

“Plus, print is beautiful, and we get to explore new ways of making a community paper that even people beyond the community want to read, and our 500+ readers outside of the city definitely testify to that.”

Wet Leg Unleash Second Single and Video “Wet Dream”

0

June saw the arrival of the brand new Isle of Wight duo Wet Leg with their storming debut single “Chaise Longue”; since then, the song has clocked up over 3,000,000 streams, over 1,000,000 video views and won Wet Leg’s Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers fans in the likes of Paramore’s Hayley Williams, Iggy Pop and Florence Welch.

Now, the two-piece are ready to unleash their next single, “Wet Dream”. A 2 and half minute slice of exuberance as unforgettable and buoyant as “Chaise Longue” that cements them as one of the most thrilling bands to emerge this year. Teasdale explains its origins: “Wet Dream is a breakup song; it came about when one of my ex’s went through a stage of texting me after we’d broken up, telling me that ‘he had a dream about me’.” The video—directed by Teasdale—is like something out of Věra Chytilová and Salvador Dali’s wildest dreams.

Also announced today are Wet Leg’s first ever US tour dates, playing New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco this coming December. Tickets will be available Friday, October 1st at 10am local; grab those here:

Wet Leg Tour Dates
Dec 9 – Brooklyn, NY @ Baby’s All Right
Dec 14 – Los Angeles, CA @ The Moroccan Lounge
Dec 15 – San Francisco, CA @ Popscene at Rickshaw Stop
