CMRRA and TikTok Announce Multi-Year Partnership Agreement

0

The Canadian Musical Reproduction Rights Agency (CMRRA) and TikTok today announced an agreement for the collection of digital mechanical royalties in Canada, delivering a new revenue stream for music publishers and self-published songwriters. The new deal also accounts for TikTok’s past use of musical works and sets up a forward-looking partnership.

“TikTok’s integration of music with video has created a new opportunity for music creators to engage users from around the world. Not only has the platform fueled new song discovery but it has given classic songs new life. The activity has swelled outside the platform, directly impacting increased consumption across all media. CMRRA will continue to support new technology platforms that seek to properly license music, ensuring rights holders are compensated” said Paul Shaver, President of CMRRA.

“We are thrilled to enter into this agreement with CMRRA in Canada, to connect music publishers and artists to new audiences and enable song discovery through the power of TikTok. Given the ever-changing music industry, we’re committed to working together to create new revenue opportunities and offer an innovative way to reach fans,” said Jordan Lowy, Head of Music Publishing Licensing and Partnerships, TikTok.

The agreement is designed to enrich users’ experience and the creators of the music made available by the platform by helping them get their music seen on a canvas with unlimited avenues for expression. TikTok is home to emerging talent and many top artists presenting their creative vision through its video formats. The platform enables and promotes music discovery by presenting songs in new contexts, simultaneously building bridges for artists and creators to connect with global audiences and driving their business forward.

Rock Royalty RICK WAKEMAN Returns to the US with a Solo Show Full of Music and Mirth

0

Keyboard wizard Rick Wakeman has two reasons to celebrate. First, his outstanding career in music has just been recognized by Queen Elizabeth II, who named him a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in her recent annual Birthday Honours.

And secondly, after 18 months of lockdown in the UK, he is finally able to announce the long-delayed follow-up to 2019’s sell-out The Grumpy Old Rock Star Tour with – The Even Grumpier Old Rock Star Tour!

Having made his name creating prog rock extravaganzas, in his solo shows Wakeman returns to his roots with a programme packed with virtuosic piano performances and hilarious anecdotes, inspired by his 50-plus-year career. Repertoire will range from his solo works and his stints in the band YES through to his early days as a session musician playing keyboards on such classics as David Bowie’s Life On Mars, plus surprises like his unique interpretations of Beatles’ hits and many more memorable tunes, adapted for the grand piano. And all of this glorious music is punctuated by riotous reflections on his life and the people he’s met along the way. As he himself often observes, life is rarely dull when Rick Wakeman is around!

The 24-city tour will kick-off on Thursday, October 14th in Derry, NH at the Tupelo Music Hall and continue through November. Tickets go on-sale starting Friday, June 25th, 10am local time. C

Professional musician, keyboard player, songwriter, broadcaster and raconteur, Wakeman’s career started as a much-in-demand session player, who performed on recordings by David Bowie, Elton John, Lou Reed, Al Stewart and hundreds more artists. His big break came in 1971 when he joined YES, who went on to become the most successful prog rock band in the world, but Wakeman has also always gone his own way outside the framework of that group.

In the Seventies, he achieved chart-topping success with solo albums such as Journey To The Centre Of The Earth, The Six Wives of Henry VIII and The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, which cumulatively sold over 10,000,000 copies in North America alone.

He has written several film scores, amongst them two for director Ken Russell (Lisztomania and Crimes of Passion) and two ‘Harry Palmer’ movies starring Michael Caine (Bullet To Beijing and Midnight in St Petersburg), and in the UK, has built up an impressive reputation as a witty guest and host on shows like Grumpy Old Men, Countdown, Watchdog and the comedy cabaret show Live at Jongleurs. His wickedly irreverent acceptance speech when YES was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017 nearly brought the house down!

That same year, he made British chart history when his Piano Portraits record became the first solo piano instrumental album to enter the UK’s Top 10 on release – a feat he then repeated 2018’s Piano Odyssey. Both records feature tunes that have a special connection with Rick’s personal musical journey and his subsequent tours, in which he performs a selection of tracks accompanied by hilarious memories and anecdotes have been instant sell-outs in the UK.

Now the achievements of his incredible career have been officially recognized with a CBE in recognition of his services to music, so come and celebrate with him on his forthcoming tour. And don’t worry – Rick will still find plenty of reasons to be grumpy…

Squeeze Announces Nomadband Tour With Hall & Oates

0

Legendary and eternally hipster U.K. band Squeeze (whose founding members Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook have been compared to the likes of John Lennon and Paul McCartney as songwriters and performers), are set to begin the U.S. leg of their 24-date Nomadband tour on August 1st . The group’s headlining schedule will be interspersed with 18 support dates for Daryl Hall & John Oates and will continue throughout the summer into early fall 2021.

Squeeze will begin their Nomadband tour at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium before joining Hall & Oates for their first date on August 5 at the Xfinity Center in Mansfield, MA (with KT Tunstall.) The band’s final headlining show in the U.S. will be on October 7th at the Moda Center in Portland, OR.

Squeeze’s debut self-titled album was released by A&M in 1978 (after a three-song EP) at the height of the punk revolution, but its pop songwriting hooks and melodies hark back to the ‘60s British Invasion. That album included the track, “Take Me I’m Yours,” followed by a cadre of hits on the UK charts including “Cool for Cats,” “Up the Junction,” “Pulling Mussels From A Shell,” “Black Coffee in Bed” and “Labeled With Love.” Squeeze’s hits “Tempted,” “Hourglass” and “853-5937” (from East Side Story) made their mark in the U.S. in 1981.

Squeeze disbanded in 1999 and reunited in 2007, releasing three new albums since then (2010’s Spot the Difference, 2015’s Cradle to the Grave and 2017’s The Knowledge,) as well as various solo projects from both Chris and Glenn. Aside from Difford and Tilbrook, Squeeze now features keyboardist Stephen Lange and drummer Simon Hanson (since 2007,) percussionist/back-up singer Steve Smith (vocalist for house music group Dirty Vegas) along with pedal/lap steel guitarist Melvin Duffy (who joined them for the 2019 tour) and Owen Biddle, former bassist for The Roots.

The band’s “Squeeze Songbook 2019” tour featured opening acts like KT Tunstall, They Might Be Giants, X, Marshall Crenshaw, the Mavericks and Leon Tilbrook in selected cities and was widely praised by critics. Two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foo Fighters founder Dave Grohl even joined the band at the Bourbon & Beyond Festival in Louisville in September 2019 to perform percussion on “Black Coffee in Bed.”

Additionally, a video of the electrifying rendition of “I’m Finding It Harder To Be A Gentleman” from the same Gold Dollar show premiered today on The White Stripes YouTube channel.

In addition, limited edition red-and-white pinwheel colored vinyl will arrive that same day at Third Man Records Nashville & Detroit as well as at select independent record stores nationwide. Additional details will be unveiled soon.

As part of the White Blood Cells 20th anniversary celebration, the album has also been remastered in HD from the original tape using the Plangent Process to hear on all digital retailers & streaming services offering high quality audio functionality, alongside HD remasters of The White Stripes’ self-titled 1999 debut album and 2003’s milestone Elephant. Additional White Stripes albums will be available in HD later this year. A special $7.99 limited time anniversary album sale on the entire White Stripes catalog has begun on Apple Music as well. The anniversary is further commemorated with a custom peppermint swirl Twitter emoji which appears automatically when using any of the following hashtags: #TheWhiteStripes, #WhiteBloodCells20, #WhiteBloodCells, #FellInLoveWithAGirl, and #HotelYorba.

This spring saw the long-awaited official release of The Glitch Mob’s acclaimed underground remix of The White Stripes anthem, “Seven Nation Army.” “Seven Nation Army (The Glitch Mob Remix)” will also be available as a 7-inch vinyl single on Friday, July 9; standard black vinyl is available for pre-order now at thirdmanstore.com. Canadian Live Music Association and Music Canada announce the launch of OntarioMusicCities.ca

0

he Canadian Live Music Association (CLMA) and Music Canada have launched the new www.OntarioMusicCities.ca site, a resource for the broader music community to stimulate economic recovery across Ontario, with funding (administered by the CLMA) to build out and enhance Music Cities work. The support was announced by Lisa MacLeod, Minister of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries earlier this year.

“The last 16 months have deeply impacted our live music community, and the sector has seen a devastating 92% average decrease in revenue,” said Erin Benjamin, President & CEO of the CLMA. “We thank the Minister for recognizing the integral role live music plays in our quality of life, as well as its significant economic, social, and cultural benefits. While we still face a long road ahead, this critical Music Cities work will pave our way forward and help ensure a more vibrant future – for artists, communities, tourism, and the industry as a whole.”

As part of the initiative, a survey has been launched to help guide communities as they transform toward a thriving music community, and anyone involved in the music scene at a local level is encouraged to participate. The input gathered is the next step in the development of a province-wide Music Cities framework that aims to help the industry return stronger than ever.

“I am thrilled that thanks to the Minister’s support of CLMA, Music Canada’s internationally recognized Music Cities framework will support the viability of more music communities across the province,” said Patrick Rogers, CEO of Music Canada. “Live music is a crucial revenue stream for Canada’s professional musicians, which creates jobs and drives local tourism. Supporting the business of live music is essential so our industry can get back to doing what they do best: creating exponential economic, social and cultural impact for artists and the communities they call home.”

The provincial Music Cities framework is grounded in Music Canada’s world-renowned ‘Music Cities’ framework, a proven model that offers support to communities across the province so they can better leverage their own local live music assets. The framework includes tools and resources that can be implemented to guide the development of local policy and bylaws, and community supports that focus on artists, venues and festivals, the wider supply chain and tourism, so that communities can grow their music economies.

The framework will deliver municipally-focused support and resources to local economies by exploring and recommending initiatives for towns and cities across the province along several categories. These include:

  • Advancing policies that support music and musicians,

  • Expanding music offices and music Advisory Boards across the province,

  • Developing initiatives that engage a broader community,

  • Furthering programs that provide access to music spaces,

  • Developing audience retention strategies for when it is safe to return to venues, festivals and music spaces,

  • Nurturing and leveraging strategic relationships with the tourism, business and other key sectors to align and advance rebuild and recovery efforts.

The CLMA and Music Canada remain committed to core values of equity, diversity and inclusion and by working with a range of organizations within the music community, they will work together to meaningfully gain ground to create a more inclusive music industry.

SEETHER front man Shaun Morgan says on this new release: “We are really excited to release The Purgatory EP as a companion to our latest single, Wasteland. I’m especially proud of how the alternate version of the track turned out and really happy that people will finally hear it!”

Wasteland – The Purgatory EP demonstrates SEETHER’s dynamism and creative versatility. Seething with dark muscularity, the urgent What Would You Do? is a beautiful and cathartic baptism-by-fire that never lets up. With Pixies’ undertones and Beatle accents, Will It Ever End? is a startling, pandemic appropriate head trip that, like the voice in your head, goes to places unforeseen and unforgiven. Feast or Famine sounds like the unholy progeny of AC/DC and Ozzy-era Sabbath. The EP is bookended by two versions of Wasteland, the original album version and a stripped-down alternate version that features touches of piano and cello, but still retains the original’s tormented drive. This latest release finds SEETHER, one of hard rock’s most enduring and prolific bands, at the very top of their very productive game.

Dine Alone Signs Toronto-Based Music Collective New West

0

Dine Alone Records is excited to announce they are now working with New West, a Toronto-based music collective formed in 2017. The group is comprised of four like-minded songwriters and instrumentalists from varying notable studio production and musical backgrounds: Kala Wita, Vella, Ben Key and Noel West.

New West’s double-single Summer B-Sides features evocative and breezy indie-pop earworms, “Special Place In Hell” and “The Kids Are Alright”.

“All of our songs are inspired by the relationships that surround us, capturing moments and feelings then transcribing them into lyric and melody. We like writing songs about love because they feel good, even after the hundredth listen. Our music is meant to be felt and we hope this resonates with our listeners. We want to inspire a sense of movement and progression, while leaving our listeners with feelings of nostalgia, youth and carelessness.”

The four members that make up New West met primarily through Noel. In 2017, Noel conducted separate studio sessions with Kala Wita, who was introduced to Noel via the Toronto music scene and childhood friend Ben Key with the intention of forming a collaborative project. The three inevitably started sessions together however it was the addition of Vella, friend and colleague to Ben, that completed the equation. The chemistry was instantaneous. In 2018, the group changed their name from The .wav to New West, ready to introduce a new signature sound to the Toronto music scene.

All music released by New West is written and performed by all four members. It is this characteristic that defines them as a collective and separates them from other artists and bands. Each member contributes as a multifaceted instrumentalist/songwriter, putting forth a fresh spin on collaborative music. The New West sound is comprised of a wide pallet of sonic inspirations but drawing primarily from British acts such as Oasis, Coldplay, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and Toronto artists such as The Weeknd and Daniel Caesar. Their songs emanate themes of nostalgia, infatuation, heartbreak and self-awareness with a focus on songwriting and lyricism. More information and new music will be announced when available.

A Flock Of Seagulls returns with ‘Say You Love Me’, lead single from their New Album ‘String Theory’

0

Following up on their 2018 their “Ascension” album, A Flock Of Seagulls return with ‘Say You Love Me’, the lead single from their new album, the second installment of their Orchestral Hits opus. ‘String Theory’ includes 11 new recordings of some of their classic hits and fan favorites.

The ‘Say You Love Me’ single comes with a eight different versions, remixes and a music video. The track is full to the brim of soaring strings, uplifting grooves and widescreen scope. Mikes positive message in the vocals knitting the new recording together with aplomb. Remixes are both of the 80s style “extended” variety and also newly reproduced versions, with Soda Pimps offering a electronic diversion on the track.

A Flock Of Seagulls may well be known for their bizarrely teased haircuts as much as their hit single “I Ran”. A Flock Of Seagulls were one of prime movers in the 80’s new wave era. Growing out of the synth-heavy and ruthlessly stylish new romantic movement. Hairdresser Mike Score (lead vocals, keyboards) formed A Flock Of Seagulls with his brother Ali (drums) and fellow hairdresser Frank Maudsley (bass) in 1980, adding guitarist Paul Reynolds several months later.. “Telecommunication” became an underground hit in Euro-disco and new wave clubs. The band signed a major-label contract with Jive by the end of the year, and their eponymous debut album appeared in the spring of 1982. “I Ran (So Far Away)” was released as the first single from the album, and MTV quickly picked up on its icily attractive video, which featured long shots of Mike Score and his distinctive, cascading hair. The single climbed into the American Top Ten, taking the album along with it. In the UK, “I Ran” didn’t make the Top 40, but “Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You)” reached number ten later that year; in America, that single became a Top 40 hit in 1983, after “Space Age Love Song” peaked at number 30. “Wishing” was taken from the group’s second album “Listen” in 1983. The band released 1984’s “The Story of A Young Heart” which fielded the hit “The More You Live, The More You Love”.

A Flock Of Seagulls are famous for their music but also famous for their references in popular culture from TV (Ross’s Haircut in Friends), Computer Games (“I Ran” was the standout track on Grand Theft Auto Radio), Film (The band and haircut are referenced in Pulp Fiction, X-Men and The Wedding Singer) . This cemented the bands reputation and brought the band to a whole new legion of fans.

In 2003, the original line-up of Mike, Ali, Frank and Paul reunited for a one-off performance on the VH1 series Bands Reunited. In September 2004, they reformed again and did a brief tour in the United States. From 2004 to 2021 Mike was as busy as ever touring the band around the world. In 2018 the band appeared on record together for their “Ascension” album. The original members all appear on record together for ‘String Theory’.
