Saskatoon Folk Singer/Songwriter PAUL KUZBIK Gets Introspective & Reflective in Emotional New Single & Video, “Diamonds”

0

It’s been a year since folk singer/songwriter Paul Kuzbik released his breakthrough debut, Still Love, and now… He’s back with a taste of his next one with the release of his single and video, “Diamonds” — available now.

Soft, warm, and emotional, “Diamonds” is an acoustic track that serves as the last song and lead single from the Saskatoon, Saskatchewan-based musician’s forthcoming sophomore record, The Miracle of Being — coming this September 2021.

The nostalgic-feeling and introspective folk number was written solely by Kuzbik, and features Erik Sample on drums, Nevin Buehler on bass, and Steph Cameron on backup vocals. As the head honcho, Kuzbik not only lays down all vocal and guitar work on the release, but he produced it too.

On writing “Diamonds,” the renowned musician, father, and husband said it came to him during a rainy Father’s Day weekend in a tiny cabin somewhere “up north.”

With a little help from his family, “Diamonds” was inspired by the idea of sending a message to his son, Nico, for him to rediscover in the future. The lyrics are a gentle reminder to choose love and see the diamonds within ourselves, rather than chasing a life of meaningless material things.

Kuzbik describes “Diamonds” as “a warm, nostalgic folk-rock track that reflects on the simpler times of youth from the grown-up reality of young fatherhood.”

It also marks the beginning of a new era for the veteran musician — one which will be heard clearly in The Miracle of Being, upon its release. Throughout the record lives a familiar and authentic acoustic guitar sound which drives the unexplainable magic of Kuzbik’s songwriting, wondrous lyricism, and unapologetic dedication to his craft. These are all ingredients which have displayed Kuzbik’s sonic potential magnificently over the last few years.

Kuzbik’s intention with the album was to pay homage to many of the great songwriters of the bygone era, and give his listeners a modern look at the classic and undying tales of: love, loss, heartbreak and triumph.

Though Kuzbik produced the entire project, he enlisted Saskatoon-based Mike LaFrench to engineer it, Vancouver’s own Jesse Gander to mix it, and the acclaimed Stu McKillop (Vancouver) to master the album.

Radiohead Releases Second Series Of Streaming Shows From The Archives

0

Radiohead announces a new series of archival live shows to be streamed from the Radiohead Public Library vaults. Each edition will premiere on Radiohead’s YouTube channel Fridays at 8pm BST for seven weeks beginning this Friday, the 9th of April.

The first of the new episodes will be a seldom-seen January 16, 2008 In-Store-performance-turned-impromptu-club-show from London’s 93ft East.

The January 16, 2008 show was originally intended to be an In-Store performance at London record store Rough Trade East to mark the conventional release of the In Rainbows album—a plan that went awry when hordes of fans and overwhelming media coverage caught the attention of the local authorities. The entire production had to be torn down and a replacement venue found on a moment’s notice. The show ultimately happened at 93ft East, a club with a capacity of a few hundred that was thankfully available for the night. The result was an electric and intimate Radiohead performance like no other, one largely unseen since—until now.

In other news, for a limited time Radiohead will be making available a Radiohead crew T-shirt — the same original shirts distributed to touring and local crew — with proceeds benefitting a range of stage & crew organizations supported at #WeMakeEvents. “A Beautiful Noise” The New Broadway-Bound Musical About Neil Diamond Is Going To Boston First

0

Producers Ken Davenport and Bob Gaudio announced today that the previously untitled Broadway-bound new musical that will tell the incredible life story of legendary singer-songwriter Neil Diamond, now has its name – A Beautiful Noise – and will have its world premiere at Boston’s Emerson Colonial Theatre next summer with performances for this strictly limited four-week engagement starting Tuesday, June 21, 2022 and playing through Sunday, July 17, 2022. The news marks the first new show to announce an engagement at this legendary theater since the pandemic forced the shutdown of live entertainment.

Diamond said, “I’ve had the joy of coming to Boston on countless occasions, but one of the most special was my 2013 trip to Fenway where I had the honor of being part of a moment of relief, unity, strength, and love. Next summer, when A Beautiful Noise has its first performance at the Emerson Colonial Theatre, and we’re all able to safely be in the same space together, experiencing the thrill of live theater, I imagine those same emotions will wash over me and the entire audience. Relief… Unity… Strength… Love… I can’t wait to share that experience.”

In addition, Olivier Award® winner and four-time Tony Award® nominee Steven Hoggett (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Once, Black Watch) will choreograph A Beautiful Noise. Hogget joins four-time Academy Award®-nominee Anthony McCarten (Bohemian Rhapsody, Darkest Hour, The Theory of Everything), who is penning the book, and Tony Award-winning director Michael Mayer (Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Spring Awakening).

Long loved by Boston, Diamond first played Revere, MA, in 1967 and he has subsequently played Boston and surrounding areas almost 40 times, visiting the city in each decade of his 50+ years of performing.

His iconic song “Sweet Caroline” has become an anthem to Red Sox fans where at every home game an eighth-inning singalong takes place at Fenway Park. The song’s connection to Boston was seared into the hearts of millions when, in the immediate aftermath of the 2013 Marathon Bombing, teams around the Major Leagues played the song to show solidarity with the city while at Fenway, Diamond himself took to the field to sing an emotional rendition of 1969 classic.

With his first break into songwriting in the 1960’s and his meteoric rise in the 1970’s, and plenty of crushing disappointments and heart-stopping triumphs along the way, Neil Diamond has maintained an almost unthinkable level of superstardom for five straight decades. How did a poor, Jewish kid from Brooklyn become one of the most universally adored showmen of all time? There’s only one way to tell it: a musical set to his era- and genre-defining smash hits that entranced the world.

In its storied history, the Emerson Colonial Theatre has debuted such seminal Broadway shows as Anything Goes, Porgy and Bess, Oklahoma!, Born Yesterday, Follies, A Little Night Music, Grand Hotel, and La Cage aux Folles, among others.

Reviving a great theatrical tradition, Ambassador Theatre Group’s newly restored Emerson Colonial Theatre officially re-opened its doors in July 2018 and has hosted the pre-Broadway world premieres of Moulin Rouge! The Musical, David Byrne’s American Utopia, and Plaza Suite starring Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker.

Emerson Colonial Theatre, which opened in 1900 with a production of Ben-Hur, is the oldest continuously operated theater in Boston; as well as being amongst the most magnificent, having retained most of its original period details.

Casting, creative team, and ticket on sale dates for A Beautiful Noise in Boston will be announced shortly.

Dave Grohl to Publish Memoir “The Storyteller” on October 5

0

Dey Street Books, an imprint of the William Morrow Group at HarperCollins, announced today that they will publish THE STORYTELLER by Grammy-winning musician, documentary filmmaker, and fledgling author Dave Grohl. Dey Street VP and Editorial Director Carrie Thornton negotiated the deal with WME. Grohl is managed by Silva Artist Management. The book will go on sale October 5, 2021 and will also be published in UK & Commonwealth (Simon & Schuster), Finland (Bazar), Germany (Ullstein), Holland (A.W. Bruna), and Italy (Rizzoli).

Dave Grohl has been one of the most beloved and respected figures on the international music scene since his recorded debut with Nirvana on 1991’s generation-defining Nevermind. Grohl took center stage with Foo Fighters’ 1995 self-titled debut, the first of 10 albums in a massive 12-Grammy-winning streak, most recently including the #1 album sales charting Medicine at Midnight. Grohl has traveled the planet doing the thing he loves most-playing rock n roll marathons for tens of thousands of ecstatic Foo Fighter fans. But when the pandemic necessitated going into lockdown, Grohl took stock of how he might use this moment of pause. Channeling his creativity into writing and using his remarkable skill for storytelling, in May 2020 he wrote a moving reflection for The Atlantic on missing the thrill of live music during the Covid era that went viral. Then, ending a longstanding self-imposed exile from social media, Grohl’s new Instagram account @davestruestories was born. This new platform became a way for Dave to share his extraordinary (and funny) stories with fans and fellow music nuts and now, Grohl is set to build upon that momentum with his first book.

Grohl’s new book is as much a celebration of music as it is about the moments that have molded him into the man he is today. From hilarious childhood mishaps, touching family moments, leaving home to see the world at eighteen, to spectacular stories about Nirvana, Foo Fighters, David Bowie, Joan Jett, Iggy Pop, Paul McCartney, playing drums for Tom Petty on Saturday Night Live, performing at the White House, and even swing dancing with AC/DC, with all love, laughs, loss, and embarrassments along the way, THE STORYTELLER is a fascinating look at a life lived loud.

“There is a common thread that runs throughout everything that I do: storytelling. Whether in song, documentary film or on the page, I have always felt compelled to share moments from my life. This inclination is a huge part of what excites me creatively but also as a human being. In March 2020, realizing that my day job with the Foo Fighters was going to go on hold, I started an Instagram account (@davestruestories) and decided to focus all of my creative energy on writing some of my stories down, something I love doing but I’ve never really had the time for. I soon found that the reward I felt every time I posted a story was the same as the feeling I get when playing a song to an audience, so I kept on writing. The response from readers was a soul-filling as any applause in an arena. So, I took stock of all the experiences I’ve had in my life-incredible, difficult, funny and emotional-and decided it was time to finally put them into words. Now with the amazing people at Dey Street books I’m excited and honored to announce THE STORYTELLER, a collection of memories of a life lived loud. From my early days growing up in the suburbs of Washington, DC, to hitting the road at the age of 18, and all the music that followed, I can now share these adventures with the world, as seen and heard from behind the microphone. Turn it up!” Grohl says.

“From the second I saw Dave’s first post on Instagram, I knew I was going to publish his book. Well, to be honest, I’ve been hoping to publish Dave Grohl’s book since I became a book editor. I’m a Gen-Xer. I’m from Virginia just like Dave. We grew up listening to a lot of the same music. I’ve always admired his Puckish personality and his awesome musicianship. It turns out that he can write with as much energy and passion as he performs. Plus, he’s a spectacular human who cares deeply about his mom, his family, his bandmates, music, art and the world. All of that passion comes through in his stories and in THE STORYTELLER. I am a lucky editor indeed, but mostly because I get to read the book first,” says Thornton.

Dave Grohl is a 16-time Grammy-winning musician and 2-time Emmy-winning director.

Dave Grohl has been one of the most beloved and respected figures on the international music scene since his recorded debut with Nirvana on 1991’s generation-defining Nevermind. Grohl took center stage with Foo Fighters’ 1995 self-titled debut, the first album in massive 12-Grammy-winning catalogue that now includes The Colour & The Shape (1997), There Is Nothing Left To Lose (1999), One By One (2002), In Your Honor (2005), Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace (2007), Wasting Light (2011), Sonic Highways (2014), Concrete and Gold (2017) and, most recently, Medicine at Midnight (2021).

Grohl has a well-earned reputation as a prolific collaborator: His various endeavors have included “Cut Me Some Slack,” written and recorded with Paul McCartney and Grohl’s Nirvana bandmates Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear; Them Crooked Vultures, formed with Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones and Queens of the Stone Age’s Joshua Homme, late legends David Bowie and Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead, as well as Mick Jagger, Neil Young, Elton John, Nine Inch Nails, Roger Taylor and Brian May of Queen, to name a few.

In 2013, Grohl made his debut as a feature director/producer with the acclaimed documentary Sound City. Named for the Van Nuys CA studio where Nirvana recorded Nevermind in 1991, which would sell more than 30 million copies and transform the modern musical landscape. Premiering to unanimous raves at Sundance and achieving a 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating, Sound City focused both on the history of the legendary studio and on the ongoing fight to preserve the human element of music. Hailed by Peter Travers of Rolling Stone as an “exhilarating documentary about what makes life worth living,” by The New York Times as “candy to several generations’ worth of rock fans” and NPR as “a celebration of just how unbelievably awesome it is to make rock music for a living,” Sound City has since been certified as a Gold Longform Video by the RIAA, while the Sound City-Real To Reel companion album took the 2013 Grammys for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media and Best Rock Song (“Cut Me Some Slack”).

Grohl also directed the eight-part HBO docuseries Foo Fighters: Sonic Highways, which premiered in October 2014 and went on to win two of the four Emmys for which it was nominated (outstanding sound mixing for nonfiction programming and outstanding sound editing for nonfiction programming). Described by Grohl as a love letter to the history of American music, Sonic Highways was comprised of eight one-hour episodes, each chronicling the creation of one song on Foo Fighters’ Sonic Highways album, each written and recorded in a different American musical landmark — Austin, Chicago, Los Angeles, Nashville, New Orleans, New York, Seattle, and Washington, D.C.

Philadelphia, PA Singer/Songwriter TRACY COLLETTO is “Diving In” with Atmospheric New Dream-Pop Single

0

Philadelphia, PA singer/songwriter Tracy Colletto is “Diving In” with an atmospheric new dream-pop single.

The powerful, piano-led ballad spans three minutes and 35 seconds and includes a versatile range of sonic influences, which make it uniquely its own… From pop, to folk, to ambient, Colletto manages to keep the listener on their toes — and with ease.

With the aid of diverse influences, “Diving In” is driven by the calming aura of Colletto’s emotional vocal tracks and triumphant lyrics, which expand upon the renowned musician’s journey back onto the music scene in 2016 after a decade away from it; this single in particular arrives more than a year following the release of the Philadelphia-based artist’s most recent original, “Pretty Lights.”

Tracy released her debut album Home in 1999 (it was released digitally in 2006), before taking a lengthy hiatus and focusing on other aspects of her personal life — including her passion for art. “Music and art have always been with me, but the art was way easier to share,” the multi-talented artist shares. “I put away music for other interests.

“Although it was nice to travel the world and to have my paintings in exhibits,” she adds, “the songwriting kept hounding me.”

These feelings inspired Colletto to get back to the songwriting board and come up with what became her hit 2016 album, Chocolate Happy Cake.

Touching on the journey of what inspired “Diving In,” Colletto says she really wanted to express how she felt when she began writing songs and performing them to live audiences. “It was uncomfortable and exhilarating at the same time,” she explains of the feeling.

The title was actually inspired by a famous David Bowie quote; according to Colletto, he said “you will find excitement in life when your feet aren’t quite touching the bottom…”

Colletto liked the idea of taking a “deep dive” into something she always wanted to do.

Though she started writing “Diving In” in early 2017, Colletto admits it didn’t truly take shape until mid-2020 when she was feeling trapped inside of her home no thanks to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

It wasn’t just the global health crisis that pushed her to get it produced, however. After hearing she had been included on the Nashville Songwriter Association International’s “Ones to Watch” list, she felt a resurgence of creative energy and knew the timing was just right for new music.

“It’s amazing how one little step leads to another, simply because I decided not to make excuses anymore for what I love to do,” Colletto considers. “It has been a great ride — sometimes very hard, and other times magical — and I am grateful for that.”

As well as releasing albums Home and Chocolate Happy Cake — plus an abundance of singles, including the Independent Music Award and Best Alt. Country Song-nominated “The Ride” — Colletto earned an Honorable Mention in the John Lennon International Songwriting Competition in 2000, before working with GRAMMY Award-winning producer Glenn Barratt to bring Chocolate Happy Cake to life.

When she’s not creating music or visual art — or stuck inside — Colletto is a world traveller who cares deeply for the natural world and its decaying environment. Her worldwide ventures have inspired many of her songs, including “Complete Peace” and the fan-favourite “Rosa” — which explores her Sicilian ancestral roots.

Montreal’s JOJI REDBACK Drops Playful New Music Video for Funky French-Language Single, “Sa Mère”

0

Less than a month after the release of his highly-anticipated sophomore EP, A Stranger Everywhere, French/Australian Montreal-based singer Joji Redback has released a brand-new music video for the project’s latest single, “Sa Mère” — available now.

Though he’s been releasing music since 2017, Joji began to blow up late last year after releasing the lead single off 2021’s A Stranger Everywhere, “Puerto.” The infectious tune was added to Spotify’s coveted Discover Weekly playlists and quickly racked up over 160,000+ Spotify streams alone, contributing to his 250,000+ total across all platforms.

The 24-year-old musician began making music at the mere age of six, but it wasn’t until his late adolescence that he began playing the drums and recording his vocals. Once he turned 19, music became Joji’s life.

While living in Canada, the ambitious singer has stayed true to his French roots throughout his career by releasing a mix of French and English singles and EPs. Though A Stranger Everywhere highlights the young virtuoso’s sound as a singer and rapper, his overall approach to music is extremely versatile, as he intertwines various styles with different upbeat house tempos.

Following the release of 2018’s debut LP, Aminals, this year’s sophomore full-length offering of A Stranger Everywhere was first developed in early 2019 after an unexpected surge of creativity and recording a mass number of demos — each, for the most part, covering a different genre.

Though the musician intended to make the release as versatile as possible, he wanted it to give him a core identity: a troubled yet talented musician, with no real roots or ties to a specific place.

Expanding upon that “core identity,” Joji said: “By the age of 19 years old, I had already lived on four different continents. I was born in Australia; moved to Paris as a child; moved to Hong Kong as a teenager; then moved to Canada as a young adult.”

Though the culturally-enriched artist said there were “so many benefits of growing up in different corners of the world” — including learning about all of the different musical styles he’s covered — he admitted to not knowing where “home” really is.

That feeling of being lost is exactly why Joji decided to not only call the new eight-track album A Stranger Everywhere, but why he recorded half of it in French and half in English. “I’ve grown to feel comfortable in many places, but (I have) the frustration of not feeling attached to one particular place,” said Joji. “I feel comfortable singing/rapping on many different styles of music… But along the same lines, this is the reason why I decided to have half of the EP in English and the other half in French.”
