Guitar & Stax Legend Steve Cropper Announces “First Solo Album” Since 1969

0

On April 23rd, guitar legend Steve Cropper will release ‘Fire It Up,’ which he’s calling his first proper solo album since 1969, after decades of stardom in soul, blues, and rock and roll. “This album is different from everything out there now,” Cropper says, in reference to two vocals albums he released in the 80s – “I haven’t heard myself this way since the 60s.” Cropper announced the album with the release of “Far Away,” a bouncing soul number that draws heavily from classic R&B, featuring Cropper’s signature guitar that’s always in service to the groove. “I’m a rhythm player,” Cropper explains, “I set the groove. I’m always listening to the singer and the rest of band.”

A founding member of the Blues Brothers and one of Stax Records’ main producers, songwriters, and guitarists – as the guitarist in its house band, Booker T. and the M.G.’s – Cropper reintroduced classic soul to unsuspecting audiences, with Rolling Stone ranking him in the top 40 all-time greatest guitarists. “Midnight Hour” by Wilson Pickett, “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” by Otis Redding, “Soul Man” and “Hold On I’m Coming” by Sam and Dave — you simply can’t discuss soul music without Steve Cropper. He plays on John Lennon’s Rock N Roll album, Frank Black’s Honeycomb and Fast Man Raider Man albums, and on several albums by Ringo Starr. He’s also produced for John Prine, Jeff Beck, and John Cougar Mellencamp.

But seven decades into his legendary career, Steve sees this record as different: “This is the first Steve Cropper album since 1969,” he says. “It’s made from old grooves, because during a lockdown, you work on stuff that’s been in your head for years.” Rooted in sessions with the Rascals’ Felix Cavaliere and produced with long-time collaborator Jon Tiven, Cropper is both guitarist and a producer on the album, a role he is most comfortable in after years on the scene. “To be a good producer, you’ve got to be able to hear a song finished in your head before there’s much of anything done,” he explains. “..a good production is not accidental. I’m really proud of things that I produce.”

Careful and selective about what he’ll put his name on, you won’t be surprised to find that ‘Fire It Up’ is an instant classic. From the classic R&B of the title-track, featuring vocalist Roger C. Reale, to the funk of “Bush Hog” and the quiet restraint of “One Good Turn,” the album may have Cropper’s name on it, but it’s still very much a collaborative effort, where solos and prowess are always in service to the larger rhythm. “This isn’t a battle of the bands,” he adds. “..it’s better to enhance the other guy, make him shine.”

In fact, listening to everyone else may be one of the secrets to Cropper’s style. The “Go Getter Is Gone” highlights the album’s collaborative effort. “Roger came up with most of the lyrics here,” he says. “I came up with the rhythms and the grooves and the changes, but I think teamwork is better.” And suddenly a light shines on why Cropper has pursued so few solo records: “When a basketball team wins,” he says, “it’s not the player who made the last three-pointer who wins, it’s the whole team that got him there.”

When cars are used a lot, they can start to smell. Whether it’s the gym clothes that have been sitting in the backseat for a few days, the smells from the traffic, or the kids on the way home from a muddy soccer practice, the right scents in a diffuser can help freshen the air, so you enjoy the drive. A variety of scents are available that can overpower the smells of the car, so you can breathe free.

Video: 1960s drug use propaganda film on glue sniffing

Glue is big trouble in a small tube, according to this PSA from the 1960. “It’s just a small inoffensive tube not even as big as a tube of toothpaste or shaving cream but as small as it is, this little tube is filled with big trouble. When used for their intended purpose, these so-called model cements are a great boon to the household and model building for young people but they’re a dangerous commodity when used improperly.” Sure, you might think no reasonable person would sniff glue, but we also had a generation of kids eating Tide pods, so…

The Chemical Brothers release new track ‘The Darkness That You Fear’

0

The Chemical Brothers have released their first new music since 2019’s No Geography – a record described by Q as having “the dizzying, adaptive plasticity of their best work” and “vividly melodic, restlessly inventive” by Uncut.

Built around two distinct and disparate vocal samples and a woozy swirl of psychedelic sound, The Darkness That You Fear is the sonic equivalent of light at the end of the tunnel – a rush of hope and a pointer towards a brighter, more open future.

The Chemical Brothers’ Tom Rowlands: “The Darkness That You Fear is a hopeful piece of music. When we found the combination of the different voices worked set to the flow of the music it made us feel optimistic, like it was something we wanted to share.”

A wildly hallucinogenic and beautifully evocative video for the track has been made by Ruffmercy, the Bristol-based director who has previously worked with artists such as Thom Yorke, Run The Jewels, and DJ Shadow.

Ruffmercy on The Darkness That You Fear: “When I first heard the song I immediately connected with the theme and the overall positive vibe. New government rules for relaxing lockdown had been announced and combined with the sun shining, it left me feeling positive about the forthcoming summer. It also triggered a strong sense of nostalgia that led to me going back to look for visual inspiration from the period in time when I first discovered The Chemical Brothers in the mid ’90’s. The video combines archive rave footage from the mid to late 90’s with hand painted Super 8 film textures and hand drawn animation. I love using colour to create chaos and evoke emotions and this was the perfect project to do that.”

The sleeve for The Darkness That You Fear is from an artwork by the revered British abstract artist, the late Sir Terry Frost. A limited 12” of The Darkness That You Fear will be released as part of Record Store Day 2021, for the first drop on, June 12th.

The Darkness That You Fear is the first Chemical Brothers release since the No Geography track Eve of Destruction was released to coincide with their huge autumn 2019 tour that culminated in a sold out show at London’s O2 Arena. The Chemical Brothers (along with longtime visual collaborators Smith and Lyall) also created the closing installation for ‘Electronic – From Kraftwerk to The Chemical Brothers’ – the most popular exhibition London’s Design Museum has ever held.

The Chemical Brothers have been confirmed as Friday night headliners at this year’s Creamfields festival in Daresbury, Cheshire (27th August – the event has already sold out) and Sunday night headliners at TRNSMT in Glasgow on September 12th.

Sparks Immortalized In Not One, But Two Films

0

Sparks – dubbed “the best British group ever to come out of America” – have been immortalized in not one, but two movies.

Brothers Ron and Russell Mael formed Sparks in 1967 in Los Angeles. Since then they have pursued a unique creative path which has made them among the most significant figures in left-field pop, influencing artists including Joy Division, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, The Smiths, and Franz Ferdinand.

They feature as the subject of The Sparks Brothers a documentary directed by Edgar Wright (Shaun Of The Dead, Baby Driver) and including fans such as Steve Jones of The Sex Pistols and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, which is due to be released this summer.

Meanwhile, it has been announced that Annette, a new movie directed by Leos Carax (Les Amants du Pont Neuf, Holy Motors) and written by Ron and Russell Mael has been selected to open this year’s Cannes Film Festival on July 6.

The story, based on an original story by the Mael brothers, focuses on a provocative stand-up comedian (Adam Driver) and his opera star wife (Marion Cotillard), whose life takes an unexpected turn when their daughter Annette is born.

BMG released the two most recent Sparks albums, Hippopotamus (1917) and A Steady Drip, Drip, Drip (2020) and also acts as the Maels’ music publisher.

It goes without saying that we are all indebted to the women who have given us life. For without them, there would be no music.”

“We are thrilled to partner with Dave, Virginia, Live Nation, Silva Artist Management and Endeavor Content to deliver this amazing series to our Paramount+ audience exclusively,” said Bruce Gillmer, ViacomCBS President of Music, Music Talent, Programming & Events. “This series, based on Virginia Grohl’s acclaimed book, offers a rare look at the intimate and inspiring moments between some of the world’s biggest performers and their moms – just in time for Mother’s Day.”
