New Report Outlines Devastating Impact of COVID-19 on Canadian Independent Music Industry

0

A new report details just how much the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted Canadian independent musicians. Among the most shocking revelations: the evaporation of the live music scene has led to a decline in revenue of CAD $233 million in just six months and that the industry will likely not recover to pre-COVID levels until at least 2023.

The report, entitled The Impact of COVID-19 on Canadian Independent Music, was conducted by Nordicity on behalf of the Canadian Independent Music Association (CIMA) and shines a light on the various impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Canadian independent music sector.

The key challenges include:

  • Drop in revenue: Since the start of the pandemic in March, independent music in Canada has seen a drop in revenue of CAD $233 million. The revenue loss has been most acute for emerging artists and their representatives:

o The live sector has been the hardest hit, with a 79% drop in income from 2019;

o Independent sound recording and publishing companies will see a 41% decline in revenue from 2019

o Almost 2,000 FTE (full-time equivalent) jobs lost in six months

  • Long recovery: In a best-case scenario, industry revenue will not recover to pre-COVID levels until 2023-2024, and only with further emergency financial supports;
  • Lack of audience development: With new musicians unable to promote their work in concerts, the commercial viability of their projects will suffer. As such, the longer this impact continues, the longer the impact will be on the industry ability to generate revenue in the future;
  • Need for greater diversity: While not a new issue, the pandemic (and events that occurred during it) have highlighted the need for the industry to improve access to different voices. Anecdotal evidence suggests that many Black, Indigenous and People of Colour have not seen the same funding support as the rest of their peers – both as artists and as music industry entrepreneurs.
  • Policy and regulatory uncertainty: Between the variable funding levels at the Canada Music Fund, the potential reforms to the Copyright Act, and the recently introduced Broadcasting Act legislation (Bill C-10), there is uncertainty surrounding how Canadian independent music companies will be supported as they recover from the pandemic.

    “If real supports are not made available to music creators, Canadian music may not recover. Not only do we have an obligation to protect Canadian music as a voice for our country and as one of our proudest forms of cultural expression, but we also have a responsibility to support the hard-working Canadians who work in this industry. This is their livelihood and it has been devastated,” says CIMA Board Chair and co-owner/president of Sonic Unyon Records, Tim Potocic.

    As part of the Nordicity report, CIMA includes several recommendations for additional supports that can back the independent music industry as it recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic. Among the recommendations:

  • Extending and enhancing the Canada Music Fund’s Annual and Supplemental Funding.
  • Increasing flexibility in how funding is disbursed;
  • Enhancing financial and technical support for audience development;
  • Providing wage support for workers in the Canadian music sector;
  • Creating tailored financing for underrepresented groups; and
  • Enhancing support for online training for new and emerging music professionals

“We are asking the government to consider that without these supports, ‘the band cannot play on,’” says board director and president/founder of Aporia Records Gord Dimitrieff. “Every day, more music creators and their representatives are losing their livelihoods and there is nowhere else for them to go. This thriving and dynamic Canadian music industry that we are so proud of is quickly eroding, and without speedy action, it will be years before it can even begin to recover.”

33rd Season of Companion of the Order of Canada’s TOM JACKSON’s Long-Standing ‘Huron Carole’ Is Here

0

For more than three decades Canada’s most beloved, iconic and active philanthropist, actor and singer Tom Jackson has officially ushered in the Holiday season with his legendary seasonal variety show and fundraiser, The Huron Carole.

While its 33rd season may look a little different this year due to COVID-19, the show — and its critical initiative to support local food banks and other social service agencies nationwide — is pressing on.

And in many ways, Jackson shares, it may be among The Huron Carole’s most important seasons so far.

“Under the cloud of these challenging times, I am of the opinion that food banks and those less fortunate in our world are going to be the ones most impacted by the current economic fall-out from COVID-19,” Jackson considers. “This Christmas season is going to be different from any other, and it’s going to require us — as individuals and as a society — to look even more inside ourselves for a light of optimism…a silver lining…

“We must treasure that light and hang onto that silver lining with all our might.”

Following a 32-year tradition of travelling nationwide and spotlighting some of the country’s top talent, The Huron Carole will adjust Season 33 to be a virtual event that can either be enjoyed from home or a local venue’s big screen within its regional social distancing protocol and allowance.

In addition to Jackson, this year’s production of The Huron Carole will feature fellow esteemed artists Tom McKillip, Darryl Havers, John MacArthur Ellis, Kirby Barber, and Chris “The Wrist” Nordquist.

The show’s dedication to high-quality production and riveting entertainment value remain steadfast; the show is produced by Tomali Pictures Ltd. and Joe Media Group.

The Huron Carole presented in this virtual format is a world-class concert experience intended to leverage fundraising opportunities for varied hosts — from venues, to charities, to businesses. Supported in facilitating these private, ticketed events via Zoom, the financial and targeted impact for each host reaches beyond concert hall venues, and increases exposure for local sponsors, and partnerships with local businesses. “It truly is a Christmas gift of hope, compassion, and love to raise funds and engage colleagues, friends, and family in support of others,” Jackson says. “Miracles are not manufactured by the Creator; they are manifestations of the love the Creator bestowed on humans. Christmas is afoot, and COVID-19 restrictions are our next ‘normal’ for the foreseeable future; the time for creating miracles is upon us.”

The Huron Carole Virtual is nationally sponsored by Canada Life, a long-standing supporter for 24 years.

The virtual presentation of The Huron Carole is not Tom Jackson’s first foray into helping manage the impact of COVID-19; this Spring, Jackson launched and hosted 12 weekly artist-led episodes of Almighty Voices in support of the Unison Benevolent Fund (a non-profit registered charity providing counselling and emergency financial relief services to the Canadian music community). The series featured Governor General Julie Payette, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Susan Aglukark, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Shannon Gaye & Kristian Alexandrov, The Small Glories, The Travelling Mabels, Beverley Mahood, My My Sugar, Christina Martin, Cynthia Dale, The Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Alex & Tamen Jadad, Sarah Slean, Liona Boyd, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, Measha Brueggergosman, April Wine blues rocker/producer Myles Goodwyn, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, and many more.

For Jackson, the act of giving comes naturally and spreads easily with his indefatigable energy to be on the look-out for those in need or responding to an unexpected crisis. To date, he has helped coordinate more than $230 million in funds and in-kind services to various charities and relief organizations, volunteers with Calgary’s DOAP Team (Downtown Outreach Addictions Partnership), is an Ambassador for the Red Cross, has been appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2000, received both the JUNO and Gemini Humanitarian Awards in 2007, and the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement in 2014.

Most recently and just announced: Tom Jackson was recently promoted to Companion of the Order of Canada — the highest designation within the Order. “When I was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2000, I questioned why at the time,” Jackson shares. “Since then, this promotion to rank of Companion is validating the work my team has done for the last two decades, as well as before.

“And that work has converted the word of love to the verb of love.”

Moncton’s Blues Rockers SHORT FOR ARTHUR Are “Hanging Paintings” In The Bigger Picture For New Single

0

Moncton, NB’s psychedelic blues rockers Short For Arthur are out there “Hanging Paintings” when it comes to their new single — available now.

But, of course, it’s not that simple — which is exactly the song’s point of view.

“This track is about how there’s more to life than meets the eye,” frontman Jordan Best says. “When we choose to take a deeper look at things, we can find beauty and meaning — or “art” — in anything.”

“We are all walking sculptures,” bassist Sean Bampton considers. “Everything around us is a painting, and every sound is music. Each of us are living our own story and, together, we’re living one giant collective one. Our mind is the paint brush and our life is the canvas.”

The music video for “Hanging Paintings” grabs firm hold of the metaphor and runs with it just as artfully. “We took the concept and implied it further by bringing famous paintings to life,” guitarist Dylan Bingham offers. “First we see the main character waking up to Salvador Dali’s melting alarm clock before, on his way to work, he’s stunned to see Grant Wood’s ‘American Gothic’ couple staring at him as he drives by.

“He then proceeds to go to a coffee shop and is served his espresso by none other than DaVinci’s ‘Mona Lisa’ herself!

“He rushes home and walks in, only to find his friends playing poker,” drummer Steven Dufour continues. “But they’ve been transformed into dogs as in Cassius Marcellus Coolidge’s ‘Dogs Playing Poker.’

“At this point he figures ‘if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.’”

To get the full picture (heh…) of what they mean, you’ll have to watch the full video.
