Wilco’s ‘Summerteeth’ Gets Deluxe Treatment Featuring Unreleased Studio Recordings, And Rare 1999 Concert

0

Wilco’s third album, Summerteeth, arrived in March 1999 to glowing reviews for its daring arrangements, lush harmonies and revealing lyrics. More than 20 years later, the Chicago-based band is expanding one of its best with multiple collections packed with hours of unreleased studio and live recordings.

The first is SUMMERTEETH: DELUXE EDITION, a four-CD set that includes a Bob Ludwig 2020 remastered version of the original album (making its CD debut), along with an entire disc of unreleased studio outtakes, alternate versions and demos that chart the making of the album from songwriting demos to alternate studio arrangements to finished masters.

Summerteeth introduced many fan-favorite classic tracks that the band continues to play live today, including “I’m Always In Love,” “A Shot In The Arm” and “Via Chicago.” The 24 previously unreleased recordings that debut on the DELUXE EDITION explore the making of the critically acclaimed album with demos “No Hurry” and “I’ll Sing It,” outtakes “I’m Always In Love” (Early Run Through) and “Viking Dan,” and alternate versions “Summer Teeth” (Slow Rhodes Version) and “Pieholden Suite” (Alternate).

The two remaining discs in the CD version of SUMMERTEETH: DELUXE EDITION feature a previously unissued live show. The concert took place late in the Summerteeth tour, on November 1, 1999 in Colorado at The Boulder Theatre, when the new songs had been road-tested and the band was in top form. Sourced from an uncirculated soundboard recording, it features band members Jeff Tweedy, John Stirratt, Ken Coomer and Jay Bennett. Most of the songs on Summerteeth were performed during the show, along with several tracks from the band’s two previous records, Being There (1996) and A.M. (1995), as well as Mermaid Avenue (1999). The latter was the first in a series of albums that Wilco recorded with Billy Bragg where the group wrote music for and sang previously unheard lyrics penned by folk icon Woody Guthrie.

The CD set will be released on November 6 and will also be available from digital and streaming services.

A limited-edition vinyl version of SUMMERTEETH: DELUXE EDITION will also be released on November 6. Limited to 6,000 copies, the five-LP set features the remastered studio album as well as the unreleased demos, alternates and outtake recordings pressed on 180-gram vinyl. However, instead of the Colorado concert included in the CD package, the LP version contains a special, exclusive performance from early 1999 titled, An Unmitigated Disaster, a previously unreleased live in-store performance at Tower Records on March 11, 1999, just two days after the album was released. The 10-song set, which was broadcast on Chicago radio station WXRT-FM, highlights several tracks from Summerteeth (“We’re Just Friends,” “How To Fight Loneliness” and “Can’t Stand It”). This show will only be available in the LP collection.

Finally, a special 180-gram colored-vinyl version of SUMMERTEETH: DELUXE EDITION will also be released the same day. Limited to 2,000 copies, the five-LP set will be available exclusively from WilcoStore.com.

Additionally, Tweedy recently announced his second book, How To Write One Song, available on October 13 via Dutton. With How To Write One Song, Tweedy creates a candid and fascinating primer on the art form he knows best, revealing both the behind-the-scenes process, and the joy he gets from making something new.

BRANDI DISTERHEFT TRIO with George Coleman Ride the Waves of Bossa Nova in New Single “Surfboard”

0

Award-winning Canadian jazz contrabassist, singer and composer Brandi Disterheft and her Trio ride the wave of exploring bossa nova in a contemporary light with the release of her new single and video “Surfboard” — available now!

The title track from her forthcoming album, Surfboard — set for release October 2020 via Justin Time Records — the single and its surrounding body of work are touted among Disterheft’s most accomplished yet. Joined by two octogenarian masters — virtuoso tenor saxophonist George Coleman and the definitive Brazilian drummer Portinho — and world-class pianist Klaus Mueller, Disterheft authoritatively and organically guides the flow on a varied program that reflects her capacious interests.

On “Surfboard,” most notably, the artists nothing short of shine with their slick vignette arrangements and fitting homages to composer and co-creator of bossa nova Carlos Jobim, and bassist Sam Jones throughout. Inspired by documentary tandem surfing footage for the video, Portinho shines his signature groove on this pull from the Brazilian Songbook Standards with unrivalled finesse.

Her fifth studio album release, Disterheft’s kinetic, harmonically erudite basslines throughout Surfboard anchor ensemble interpretations of choice tunes culled from the blues, mainstream jazz, and the Great Brazilian and American Songbooks. She sings those Songbook numbers, and her own evocative lyrics, with an instantly recognizable voice that conveys vulnerability and emotional intelligence, and matches the high bar set by her partners on a series of creative solos with deft ease.

For the album’s origins, the project had gestated in Disterheft’s decade-long musical relationship with Portinho, whom she met through Mueller soon after moving to New York from Canada in 2010. Their simpatico developed during years as a working band on numerous Canadian concerts led by Disterheft and Portinho’s five-sets-a-night weekend sinecure at a Brazilian churrascaria in Manhattan.

“I wanted to record us,” she says. “Porto has a way of uplifting the beat. It’s so funky, with such an infectious groove, and he has so much dynamic range.

“He has strict rules,” she continues, “but once you learn them, he wants you to break away. He’s always anticipating, turning around the phrases. It’s so much fun.”

Brandi Disterheft has long-captivated audiences throughout Canada, Europe, Japan, China, and Haiti, — including performing at the coveted Carnegie Hall — with not only her fiery bass playing, but also her innovative live shows as she sings in both English and French showcasing her ambient and dreamy voice.

A featured soloist with the Canada’s Pops Orchestra at just the age of 21, Disterheft began performing in her teens with her mother, a Chicago-born pianist and B3 Organist. Having been under the apprenticeship of Miles Davis’ bassist, Ron Carter, since she relocated to NYC, she has also recorded with icons Oliver Jones and Hank Jones on the album Pleased To Meet You, as well as Benny Green on Anne’s Drummond’s album Revolving, and Cyrus Chestnut and Jeremy Pelt on Vincent Herring’s albums Uptown Shuffle and Night and Day.

Disterheft’s first recording Debut (2008) won a JUNO Award in the Traditional Jazz Album category, and her critically acclaimed Second Side (2009) was picked by The Globe and Mail as one of the ten greatest albums of 2009. Disterheft’s skills as a bassist and composer are clear at every turn on her breathtaking and JUNO Award-nominated follow-ups Gratitude (2012) and Blue Canvas (2016) — the latter featuring an all-star New York City line-up with jazz master Harold Mabern and the great Joe Farnsworth.

“Surfboard” is available now.

I promise this is the last Iron Maiden song on the list. The wicker man is the opening track of their 12th studio Album, Brave New World. The song was written by Steve Harris, Dickinson, and Smith. The heavy pop-inspired riff and the solo between the vocals make the song a beast.

  • Aerosmith “Dream On”

A guitar’s job is always not to take the bigger spot but to compliment the vocal. Dream On by Aerosmith is the perfect example of that. The song starts with a clean plucking. The guitar also has its own solo. The whole plucking and solo makes the song perfectly compatible with the vocal.

Inspiration for Making A Career Change to Do What You’re Passionate About

0

The truth is that a high percentage of people are unhappy in their career choices, but only a very small fraction of those who are unhappy in their chosen careers decide to make a change and move into a new role actively. Why is this? It’s simple really: the process of making a career change is often seen as being an overly stressful and hard one, especially as it can mean taking a huge pay cut after spending years on getting to where you are now.

Making the change will be worth the hard work

The fact is that making a career change tends to mean investing a lot of your time and effort into making a success out of a new career path. For example, say you wanted to become a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, then depending on what skills and training you already had in place, you may need to undertake some training. If you have a medical background, then the amount of training you would need to do would probably be less, compared to someone with no medical experience.

It won’t necessarily be easy, but if you are dedicated to your new career path and are willing to work hard to get to where you want to be, then it’s a risk that it’s worth taking. The imperative thing when it comes to making a career change is to ensure that you are informed before deciding to change career paths because it’s a big decision to make.

When it comes to making a career change, it’s important to take the time to determine if it’s the right path for you to take. It’s also important for you to gain an understanding of what it will take for you to see success from making a career change. Bearing those things in mind, below is a guide to what it takes to make a success out of a career change – have a read, take note, and decide whether making a career change is the right decision for your future.

Think about what careers you would like to explore

You might already know what route you want to go down when it comes to your career change, or you may have no idea of the route that you would like to take. You may find that using online self-assessment tools and career testing websites might be a useful step to take, to help you to determine what career could be a good fit for you. These kinds of tools tend to generate a list of career ideas which can be useful for helping you to decide which route you would like to go down.

Assess your situation

If you think that making a career change could be a step that would make you happy, then it’s important to take the time to assess your situation carefully. You will need to sit down and think about the position you are currently in and what values, skills, and personality traits you have to help you succeed. What you need to consider here is what route you would need to take to move into a certain career.

Do plenty of research

Before you make any firm decisions about your future, it is important to take the time to conduct plenty of research into the area that you hope to move into. It is not just about undertaking the training; it’s also about finding out what options the career you’re interested in has available. For instance, what is the career progression trajectory like? Is the pay good enough to support your career change? The more research that you can do into the career path that you’re interested in, the better.

Gain some experience

When it comes to getting a better understanding of what any given industry is like, and the roles within it, the key is to see the industry in action. That’s why it might be a good idea to consider undertaking some work experience within your chosen sector. That way, you will gain a strong insight into what it’s like to work within that industry, in the role that you are aiming to move into.

Making a career change is always a huge step; however, if making a career change will improve your happiness and career contentment, then it’s a step that it’s worth looking into. It won’t always be a simple process, but if changing careers could make you happy, then it’s something that it’s important to consider.

Lady Gaga Launches “Gaga Radio” On Apple Music

0

The inspiration for Lady Gaga’s hyperactive NUMBER ONE ALBUM Chromatica came from one magical place: the dance floor. Now, every Friday on her brand new GAGA RADIO show on Apple Music, she honors the larger-than-life genre of dance music by speaking with the DJs, divas, and producers who inspired her and who helped bring Chromatica to life. And each episode will include an exclusive DJ mix from one of Gaga’s guests. It’s a celebration of dance music when we need it most.

“The last few weeks I’ve been figuring out different ways at home that I can be of service to what I would call the singular global community, one that I believe to be kind in nature, one that I believe to be very special to my heart and I believe to the hearts of many,” Gaga said. “And so I’ve been thinking of all the ways that I can be someone that contributes to the society and the world. I’m super thrilled, excited to have this show and this opportunity to play an incredible mix of music every week…”

On the first episode airing this Friday, August 7, Gaga catches up with friend and Chromatica executive producer, BloodPop®. The two talk about the making of the album and the challenges that came along with it including depression and self doubt. Through it all, gratitude and friendship are what made Chromatica possible.

TUNE IN to Apple Music on Friday, August 7 at 11am PT for the first episode of “Gaga Radio” at apple.co/_GagaRadio

Lady Gaga: What’s your favorite memory on making Chromatica with me? Even though I feel like we’re still making it

BloodPop: I think maybe the first time we played you Rain On Me with the new bass line. Because you had come to the point where you’re like, “The name of the album is Chromatica. I’m finishing it. I’m doing this, I’m doing that,” and you were just fully geared up ready to go to Chromatica. Then we did this major change. We weren’t sure if you were going to … Because it was quite a big change and …

Lady Gaga: It was a huge change.

BloodPop®: I just remember you playing it super loud and you’re like, “That bass line. The bass line” That was a good day, and you and Ari cutting Rain On Me and you’re like, “What if you tried this take with some dancing?” She was like, “Huh?”

Lady Gaga: She was like, “Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my God. Gaga, Gaga, Gaga. Oh my god, Gaga.”

BloodPop®: That was amazing too.

1-minute tip for artists: Success.

When it feels like this game is rigged, it might be time to re-evaluate what success means to you.
