Tobique First Nation, NB’s Award-Winning Indigenous Folk Rocker MIKE BERN Releases Debut Solo EP, Waponahkew

0

Tobique First Nation, NB-based, award-winning and 2018 Olympic Games-featured Indigenous folk rock artist Mike Bern has released his debut solo EP Waponahkew — available now.

Meaning ‘Person of the Dawn,’ Waponahkew and its title track pay stunning homage and gratitude to Bern’s Waponahki Ancestors, while “First Mother draws on the book “The Red Man” for inspiration; the release’s single “Apatapasiq” honours the suffering and stories of residential school survivors — including those in his own family.

At three tracks on the release, Waponahkew wastes no time before showcasing Bern’s masterful roots within the genre set. Previously, he has sung in award-winning bands Kickin Krotch and District Avenue, the Indigenous Music Countdown chart-climbing single “First Mother,” and opened for Seaway, The Trews, One Bad Son, The Motorleague, and more.

Additionally, District Avenue’s music video for song “Revival” was featured at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea.

Between his signature raspy rock vocals harmonizing with traditional folk acoustic melodies, Bern doesn’t leave his penchant to pepper in a hint of Southern Gospel behind; crediting influences in the likes of Chris Otepka, Frankie Miller, and Ben Schneider, it’s of little wonder Mike Bern’s music exudes a purity and pain throughout its soundscape.

Nowhere on Waponahkew is this more notable than the album’s second song, “Apatapasiq.”

“Wolastoqey language is sung ‘Apatapasiq Wasisok’… Children come home,” Bern explains. “The song is about the experience my Aunt and Uncles went through in the Shubenacadie Residential School.

“I remember a story my uncle told me once: They were always thirsty when they went to bed and the nuns would never give them anything to drink.”

To solve it as best they could, the kids would “keep one stall clean in the bathroom and take turns dipping their socks in the toilet for a drink.

“I want the listener to experience the heartache and pain these children suffered,” Bern continues. “Being away from loved ones and forced to take on a new world and lifestyle…

“This song is dedicated to my family, and all the Residential School Survivors.”

Waponahkew is available now.

“June 13th is the date,” the Spoons add. “See you then!”

She’s got a smile that it seems to me
Reminds me of childhood memories…

Sweet Child o’ Mine is the first and only picture-book interpretation of Guns N’ Roses “Sweet Child O’ Mine” lyrics, inspired by the adventures of Maya and Natalia Rose, two young girls who have grown up touring with the band.

With evocative, sweeping paintings from artist Jennifer Zivoin, Sweet Child O’ Mine celebrates love and music, and how they bring us together in the sweetest ways.

Following the group’s 1985 formation, Guns N’ Roses injected unbridled, unrivalled, and unstoppable attitude into the burgeoning Los Angeles rock scene. The spirit went on to captivate the entire world with the release of their 1987 debut Appetite for Destruction -the best-selling U.S. debut ever, moving 30 million copies globally. In 1991, the seven-time platinum Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II occupied the top two spots of the Billboard Top 200 upon release. Over the course of the past decade, Guns N’ Roses have performed sold out shows and headlined festivals worldwide following the critically acclaimed release of 2008’s RIAA platinum-certified Chinese Democracy. Six studio albums later, Guns N’ Roses are one of the most important and influential acts in music history, and continue to set the benchmark for live performances connecting with millions of fans across the globe. Since reuniting in 2016, Guns N’ Roses has gone on to sell over 5 million tickets worldwide on the Not In This Lifetime Tour. Guns N’ Roses’ are Axl Rose (vocals, piano), Duff McKagan (bass), Slash (lead guitar), Dizzy Reed (keyboard), Richard Fortus (rhythm guitar), Frank Ferrer (drums), and Melissa Reese (keyboard).

Jennifer Zivoin worked as a graphic designer and then as a creative director before becoming a professional illustrator. Her artwork has appeared in books, magazines, and an exhibit at the world’s largest children’s museum. Jennifer lives in Indiana with her husband and two daughters.

The Fratellis Announce Special Collaboration With Soul Legend P.P. Arnold

0

The Fratellis have been keeping busy during the Covid-19 pandemic by collaborating remotely with legendary US soul singer P.P. Arnold on a very special new version of a track from their forthcoming album ‘Half Drunk Under a Full Moon’, due for release October 30th on Cooking Vinyl.

“Strangers in the Street (featuring P.P. Arnold)” is the result of an idea that began to take root in the winter of 2019. When both artists’ touring plans for 2020 were postponed due to the Covid-19 lockdown they used this unexpected spare time to complete the track, The Fratellis working from their homes in Scotland and P.P. Arnold working from her home in Spain. Like so many artists who are now finding new ways of working during this crisis, The Fratellis and P.P. Arnold, who have yet to meet in person, adapted quickly to the new restrictions and have created a beautiful, emotive, piano and strings arrangement of a song that lyrically appears to have been written for the moment, but was in fact written last year.

Comments Jon Fratelli: “I think this collaboration is a perfect example of how music communicates in a way that sets it apart from other mediums. Even now as this song is being released the band and P.P. Arnold have never been in the same room together or had a discussion about how the track would play out, our work took place whilst miles apart yet we understood one another perfectly, in its own small way it’s an example of our endless ability to connect with one another even when it seems like there are obstacles in the way. PP Arnold has one of those rare voices that can’t be imitated, replicated or taught so it has been a joy and an honour for us to have her sing with us on this song.”

Comments P.P. Arnold: “When I first received “Strangers In The Street’ to listen to and was invited to sing the vocal I instantly loved the song and felt a connection with it. When I asked Jon to explain his meaning of the song to me, it all made sense and the song has made something very beautiful happen in my life. I’m very happy that the song is being released at this time to support all the brave souls on the frontline supporting all of us.”

The Fratellis are donating 100% of their income from this track to the Spotify COVID-19 Music Relief Project and other charities supporting those on the frontline as well as those impacted by the economic consequences of the global shutdown.

Recorded in LA with producer and long-time collaborator Tony Hoffer (Beck, Phoenix, Supergrass), ‘Half Drunk Under A Full Moon’ is Glaswegian trio The Fratellis sixth album and the follow-up to 2018’s ‘In Your Own Sweet Time’, a UK Top 5 chart entry which contained the Radio 2 playlisted single “Starcrossed Losers” and saw the band perform on BBC1’s The One Show.

Celebrating Music Making In The Time Of COVID – Global Make Music Day To Go Virtual This Year

0

Make Music Day, the worldwide music celebration held each June 21, the summer solstice, is going virtual this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, organizers officially announced today. Typically featuring over 5,000 free outdoor concerts, performances, music lessons, jam sessions and other musical events on streets, sidewalks, parks and other public spaces across the U.S., this year’s celebration will take a virtual approach to encourage all people, of all musical abilities, to celebrate the joy of making music. More than 85 U.S. cities and the entire states of ConnecticutHawaiiVermont and Wisconsin will take part in Make Music Day 2020, further demonstrating the power of music to unite and uplift people, spread joy and build community amid this challenging and unprecedented time.

Unlike traditional music festivals, Make Music Day celebrates and promotes the natural music maker in all of us, regardless of age, background or skill level. Make Music Day is an open invitation for everyone to make, enjoy, perform, teach and learn music on the longest day of the year and the launch of summer. Across the U.S., in cities large and small, musicians and organizers heeded the call and have created fun, engaging, new ways for anyone to join in the celebration on Sunday, June 21 while also practicing social distancing.

Launched in France in 1982 as the Fête de la Musique, Make Music Day has become a global phenomenon observed today by hundreds of millions of people in over 1,000 cities across 120 countries. Make Music Day is presented in the U.S. by The NAMM Foundation and coordinated by the non-profit Make Music Alliance.

“In this time of social distancing, music’s powerful role to bring us together as a community is more important than ever,” said Make Music Alliance President Aaron Friedman. “While physical public gatherings may not be currently accessible, we can still stay connected and celebrate music with people around the world on June 21.”

Highlights of Make Music Day 2020 in the U.S. will include:

  • Bash the Trash – Bash the Trash Environmental Arts offers unique designs for wind, percussion and string instruments that people can build from everyday refuse. Participants are invited to create instruments, and then use them to play Beethoven’s “Ode To Joy” and “Baby Shark” on Make Music Day. Free, used guitar strings from D’Addario’s Playback String Recycling program will be sent upon request to those making stringed instruments. On June 21, Bash The Trash experts will lead a video call where everyone can share their creations.
  • Bedroom Studios – Since 2016, world-class DJs and producers on June 21 have set up small mobile recording studios on sidewalks in cities worldwide, and engaged passersby and musicians to join in an entirely improvised music creation session. In lieu of these “Street Studios,” producers will make music at home using sounds that people send to them in the moment, while livestreaming so everyone can take part in the production process.
  • Flowerpot Music – Music will be in full bloom on June 21, and literally budding from flowerpots in New York (NY), Hartford (CT), Chicago (IL), Philadelphia (PA) and other global cities. Flowerpot Music, by composer Elliot Cole and percussionist Peter Ferry, is a composition for this unlikely but beautiful percussion instrument, played with soft felt mallets. Bell-like tones are passed between performers in improvised gestures called “blooms” that sweep through the group. Written in simple prose, the piece can be performed by non-musicians and musicians alike. Cole and Ferry created a special Make Music Day version of the composition to be performed virtually, with participants joining together online to perform it on June 21Vic Firth has generously donated mallets for these performances, so that anyone can take part – all you need is a flowerpot.
  • Global Livestream – As a “Main Stage” for Make Music Day, the Make Music Alliance will organize an all-day video stream on June 21 showcasing the rich diversity of being made around the world.
  • Live From Home – People will be invited to post a musical performance from home on June 21, and tag three friends to challenge them to do the same. The initiative is in partnership with Make Music Australia and Make Music China, the latter using Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok. Live From Home will feature an Ella Fitzgerald song challenge, in cooperation with the Ella Fitzgerald Foundation.
  • #MySongIsYourSong – Musicians will join in a global song swap where they’ll learn and perform a song by a local artist, and hear one of their original songs covered in return. All songwriters and composers are encouraged to participate. Online registration closes on May 21. Partners will be carefully matched and introduced on June 5, then will share their video performances on June 21 with the hashtag #mysongisyoursong.
  • Track Meet – On June 21, teams of four musicians will race against the clock to create brand new original tracks in a creative relay. Using the virtual audio workstation SoundTrap, each musician will get 90 minutes to add their contribution before the next teammate takes over. At the end of the day, each team’s track will be published online for everyone to hear.
  • 25×12: Live Online Lessons – Music teachers across the U.S. and globally will offer 12 hours of free group lessons for 25 different instruments, at a range of levels from beginning to advanced. The lessons (12 hours per instrument) will be available via Zoom Conference.
  • Window Serenades – Musicians will perform outside select senior centers and nursing homes in Chicago (IL) and other cities while practicing social distancing. Residents may tape a piece of brightly colored paper to their window to request a song.
  • World’s Smallest Marching Band – Since 2011, “Sousapaloozas” bringing hundreds of brass, wind, and percussion players together to sight-read John Philip Sousa marches have been a Make Music Day favorite. This year, in lieu of those large gatherings, brass and wind players will explore the other end of the scale by parading solo through cities and playing band repertoire to people listening from their homes or workplace.
  • Young Composers Contest – In celebration of Make Music Day, and for all young composers home-bound due to the pandemic, the Make Music Alliance is holding a contest for composers ages 13-21. Composers are invited to write a three-minute piece for SATB vocal quartet, set to the William Carlos Williams poem, “By the road to the contagious hospital,” and submit it by May 18. A noted panel of professional composers will select three winners and seven honorable mentions. All 10 pieces will then be professionally recorded by the Make Music “Quarantet,” and released online on June 21.

All Make Music Day events are free and open to the public. Participants who wish to perform, or to host musical events, may register at MakeMusicDay.org. A full schedule of in-person and virtual events will be posted on the website in early June.

Why Should You Migrate from SharePoint on premise to SharePoint Online?

0

Microsoft SharePoint has practically shaped the way organizations collaborate within their establishments. With SharePoint Online in Office 365, communication and collaboration have attained unprecedented levels and scales. The service has transformed from a simple on-premises application into a comprehensive solution for collaboration, management of records and documents, and a system for managing portals and web content. It has helped countless businesses increase their productivity. The newer versions such as SharePoint Online cannot even be compared with the legacy versions that are incompatible with modern business requirements. Needless to say, SharePoint on premise to SharePoint Online migration has become a necessity for modern features.

Why Do Businesses Migrate to SharePoint Online?

Unlike the on-premises version, SharePoint Online is a Microsoft managed cloud solution that can still be used for creating intranet and websites for public use. Here are some other reasons for migrating to SharePoint Online.

Enterprise Security Solutions

Because SharePoint Online is managed by Microsoft, all users, regardless of their size, get enterprise-level security features to protect their confidential and sensitive data critical to their business. Your SharePoint data is stored in Microsoft’s data centers distributed around the globe and is protected by several layers of security. Additionally, it is backed up regularly so that the data is always available.

Zero/ Minimum Infrastructure Maintenance

Organizations spend massive sums of money on maintaining their infrastructure. SharePoint Migration to the cloud frees up resources and time for running core business operations. Microsoft teams manage the infrastructure for SharePoint so that your IT team can focus on other tasks such as user provisioning and profile management.

Always Updated

The latest features, patches, and security updates are available to all SharePoint Online users as soon as Microsoft makes them available. In most cases, the latest features which are available on SharePoint Online are made accessible on SharePoint on-premises servers only in the next major release.

External User Access Management

Managing security issues while allowing users to access on-premises SharePoint is one of the major challenges of the legacy system. SharePoint Online has not only simplified this process but also made file sharing using SharePoint using the Services Management Portal for collaboration much simpler.

Benefit from Hybrid SharePoint Solution

Businesses can continue to use their On-premises server while transitioning to the cloud to take advantage of SharePoint Online. This solution is perfect for businesses that are worried about compliance challenges such as data breaches if they move to the cloud model. While the most confidential business data can still be kept within the organization, others can be moved to the cloud for greater scalability.

Improved Mobility

You do not have to be connected to the servers in your office with the LAN cables to access your SharePoint data anymore. You can work from anywhere, with any device to access SharePoint Online content. Employees can improve their productivity drastically when their organizations adopt SharePoint Online.

SharePoint Migration Assistance

As a Tier 1 Microsoft CSP, Apps4Rent helps businesses with a smooth transition to SharePoint Online along with related solutions such as desktop as a serviceOur consultants are available 24/7 via phone, chat, and email for assistance.
