Urban Legends Honours Black Music Month With Weekly Live Streaming Events

Urban Legends today announced a month-long celebration of Black Music Month that includes live DJ sets, new mini-documentaries about James Brown, new episodes of the docu-series Through the Lens, and new releases of re-mixes of classic songs. BLUEPRINT OF RAP/THE GODFATHER OF SOUL (Curated by DJ Premier)

Kicking off BLACK MUSIC MONTH celebrations, Urban Legend/UMe/Universal Music Canada, the country’s leading music company spotlights one of the greatest artists of all-time, “The Godfather of Soul” James Brown. This week Urban Legends explores the music of James Brown, whose unique style laid down the foundation of Hip-Hop, demonstrating why he is one of the most sampled artists of all-time.

Tomorrow, June 18th, James Brown’s official YouTube Channel unveils the trailer for Funky Drummer, episode one of new three-episode animated mini-series titled Get Down, The Influence Of James Brown. Narrated by Questlove (The Roots, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon), and featuring Lord Finesse and Co-founder/former EIC of Wax Poetics Magazine, Andre Torres, the three-part series was created by UMe along with Dreambear and explores the sonic DNA of James Brown whose music is continually sampled and whose trademark phrasing is deeply woven into the fabric of Hip-Hop. The full episode of Funky Drummer premieres on July 10th and can be viewed here with part two (Funky President) and part three (The Payback) coming soon.

To celebrate the release of Funky Drummer, on July 10th at 4:00 pm PDT/7:00 pm EDT, DJ Premier will do a special DJ set on his official YouTube channel, paying homage to The Godfather, spinning key James Brown tracks and giving a first-hand sampling history lesson while taking questions from fans.

DEF JAM ERA – PERFECTS RAP

The second week of BLACK MUSIC MONTH spotlights the Def Jam Era – Perfects Rap, with the premiere of the original Def Jam/UMe three-episode mini docu-series Through The Lens focusing on the iconic Hip-Hop photography of Janette Beckman, Ricky Powell and Jonathan Mannion. Hosted on Def Jam’s YouTube channel, this original series covers 40 years of the music and culture of the Hip-Hop movement from its infancy.

Episode one of Through The Lens premieres on June 19th, focusing on British-born photographer Janette Beckman, who lives and works in New York and began her career at the dawn of punk rock, working for such music magazines as The Face and Melody Maker. Beckmann was one of the first photographers to shoot LL Cool J, T La Rock and Slick Rick, whose images are featured in the series.

Episode two premieres on June 26th and features photographer Ricky Powell with in-depth interviews and images, with most of the latter unreleased including a photo of Chuck D at a mutual friend’s wedding in the Dominican Republic in 1989 on the precipice of Public Enemy releasing the album Fear Of The Black Planet.

Episode three premieres on July 10th and focuses on the photos of photographer and film director Jonathan Mannion, who has shot more than 300 album covers and worked with hip-hop and R&B performers including Jay Z and Young Jeezy. Through The Lens features twenty rarely-seen Mannion photos, including contact sheets from the Reasonable Doubt photoshoot with Jay-Z, as well as stories behind photos of Method Man, Redman and DMX.

On June 19th at 7pm EDT  Def Jam’s YouTube channel and Instagram page will host a special DJ set by the legendary DJ/Producer Clark Kent paying homage to Def Jam. Credited for discovering Jay-Z, DJ Clark Kent has produced some of the biggest names in Hip-Hop and R&B including Mariah Carey, 50 Cent and The Notorious B.I.G.

On June 24th, the Urban Legends YouTube Channel presents a YouTube Livestream Session featuring DJ Natasha Diggs performing a live DJ set honoring Janet Jackson. As one of the most sought-after DJ’s in the world, Natasha Diggs has played some of the hottest parties around the globe, from her world-famous New York residency “Soul in the Horn” to Beijing, India, Sydney, London, Paris, Tokyo and Prague. She has performed alongside some of the biggest DJs and artists in the business including Erykah Badu, Rakim, Q-Tip, Bruno Mars, Damian Marley and Lauryn Hill.

MOTOWN STATE OF MIND: RELEASE & LIVE STREAM

 

On June 26th, Motown/UMe will release digitally Motown State Of Mind, a set of Motown classics handpicked, remixed and reimagined by legendary rapper and Hip-Hop producer Lord Finesse. On July 24th, Motown State Of Mind will be released as an exclusive 45 RPM box set containing seven 7-inch records on black vinyl featuring the remixed version on Side A and the classic original on Side B. To celebrate the release of one of his most ambitious projects to date, Lord Finesse will perform a special Motown State Of Mind Live Stream on the Motown socials on June 26th, the digital release date.

Kingsville, ON’s Alt-Folk Rock-Country Band FRESH BREATH Get Outta Town in New Single, “Time For A Change”

Award-winning Canadian alt-folk rock-to-blues duo Fresh Breath are taking off and getting outta town, adding to their over 100,000+ streams across Spotify along the way, with their newest country-inspired single, “Time For A Change” — available now!

“At face value, it’s a song about wanting to break free from the stressful normalcy of small town living,” Katie Pascoe says. “It’s about heading out on an adventure with the one you love.

“Getting out of town,” Josh Pascoe adds. “Together.”

But as most great songs do, there’s a personal backstory to “Time For A Change,” too.

“It’s inspired by some personal events that happened to us,” Josh explains. “A friend of ours who lives in Calgary, Alberta, was chatting with us about their upcoming western tour at the time. Knowing we’d be there during the Calgary Stampede, he encouraged us to learn and brush up on some country music.”

“So we decided to write our own!” Katie adds. “We kept it honest, simple, and to the point.”

To boot, the pair had both experienced a weekend full of ‘small town drama’ at the time, so they included it in the track. “As we were writing, Josh was sipping on whiskey and it also happened to be a Tuesday…. That got worked into the very first line of the song, and it all fell into place from there.”

The Ontario-based husband and wife duo are fresh off their recent Spring 2020 double-single release for “Tomorrow Today” and “Make It Together.” The tracks beamed brightly as positive perspective pieces amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Beyond their growing 100,000+ streams across Spotify alone, Fresh Breath have also garnered critical acclaim and radio attention; 93.9 The River / AM 800’s Dan Macdonald says “Fresh Breath is on FIRE on this new record,” citing their 2019 release, The Big Picture, which also received airplay on 99.1 CKXS, CJIM, CBC, and more. Finland’s Award-Winning Dream-Pop GEA Releases “Despite” Video and Single, Produced by Canadian Chris Birkett (Buffy Sainte-Marie, Sinead O’Connor)

Award-winning electroacoustic dream-pop art-rocker GEA grounds her otherworldly ambient fairy-folk sound within the densely lush Finnish forestland in this, her newly released single and video “Despite” — available now!

The song was first pre-recorded with award-winning and internationally heralded producer, singer/songwriter, sound engineer, composer and multi-instrumentalist Chris Birkett (Sinead O’Connor, Alison Moyet, The Pogues, Bob Geldof, Buffy Sainte-Marie). “We did this in Finland, in a small, arctic island called Hailuoto,” GEA shares. “It is close to the city of Oulu, where I’m originally from.

“The pandemic gave us quite a bit of challenges in getting this song done,” she continues. “I was going to fly to Toronto in April to record the final vocals and to be part of the mixing, but it didn’t happen. I recorded the vocals remotely in Helsinki, Finland, with the help of amazing producer and friend Oona Kapari while Chris did the instrumental recordings, production and mixing in Toronto.

“The mastering was done by Fred Kevorkian in Brooklyn, New York, and the single visual and brand design was done by bynew.co in Tallinn, Estonia. We worked fluently between four countries, despite all being heavily influenced by the pandemic.”

As known for since her breakthrough debut Butterflies (2017) and sophomore follow-up Snow (2019), the song-based storyteller wastes no opportunity in “Despite” to use her music to channel messages from spirit guides, laying bare notions of healing, transformation, and growth.

“‘Despite’ is a song about gratitude and unconditional love for love, despite the challenges, disappointments, and hard times it provides,” GEA says. “I want to dedicate it to all the people who have been influenced by the global pandemic…

“We are experiencing an unusually tough period of uncertainty, fear, and loss of loved ones, or jobs, and more,” she continues. “I wish to reconnect us who are struggling with hope, joy, and gratitude. I hope with this song, we can celebrate our beautiful journey on Earth, regardless of our troubles.”

“Despite” is the premiere single from GEA’s forthcoming release, Call for a Snake.

And much how the connection of the song and its creation are deeply intertwined with the current state of the world, the track also sets the tone and begins to touch on a part of Call for a Snake dedicated to something GEA very much admires: The spirit of the swan. “Swan represents beauty, loyalty, grace, love, and elegance,” she explains. “Swan is an iconic figure in Finnish folklore, and it moves fluently between this dimension, afterlife, and other transcendental dimensions.”

“I wrote this album after taking a bold decision to quit my job and dedicate my life to my soul mission: touch the light within people with my music,” GEA reveals. “It was not an easy choice to make as a single mother… I traded the comfort of financial security into serving my purpose, and it made me happy beyond words.

“My songwriting changed,” she continues. “I call it a ‘divine downloading’ where I get my songs through channeling. The songs on Call for a Snake are about different aspects of our spiritual journey. I only understood the concept afterwards as the different parts became clear to me gradually.”

Based in Finland, previous releases set the stage for GEA warmly acclaimed welcome into the North American music scene; she was nominated for ‘Best Emerging International Artist’ at Indie Week, and her song “Followers” was licensed to Netflix series directed by Emmy Award-winning Michele Josue, Happy Jail. GEA’s music video for “Alone” won a Hollywood Golden Film Award for ‘Best Editing,’ and “Pink” was crowned “Best Soundtrack Award” at the Social Machinery Film Festival.

The Killers New Single “My Own Soul’s Warning” Out Today

Following the success of their huge single, “Caution,” which reached #1 at the top of both the Alternative and Triple A radio charts, The Killers are thrilled to share another new song — entitled “My Own Soul’s Warning” — taken from their forthcoming album, Imploding The Mirage.

The artwork for “My Own Soul’s Warning” is a painting by the artist Thomas Blackshear, who also painted the piece the band is using for Imploding The Mirage’s cover art. As a companion to LP sleeve, the artwork for “My Own Soul’s Warning” is one from a series of Blackshear works depicting the Crow Tribe of Indians, who gave the band their blessing to use the painting, saying in a letter that “Artists living across the world inspired by our people and way of life, is a total honour and true testament of the knowledge our people share. During this unprecedented time due to the COVID-19 Pandemic as well as the injustice of police brutality protests around the world. Our people recognize the need to also help keep our spirits positive.”

The Killers also recently released replacement dates for their unavoidably postponed UK and Ireland 2020 stadium tour, with rescheduled dates for all original shows now taking place in May/June next year. The tour, the band’s biggest ever, sold out in hours when initial dates went on sale late last year, but fans have been assured that all tickets held for the original dates will be honored and are transferable to the corresponding 2021 show. Imploding The Mirage is The Killers’ sixth studio album and the follow up to 2017’s chart topping Wonderful Wonderful. Produced by the band in conjunction with Shawn Everett and Jonathan Rado of Foxygen, the album was recorded in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Park City, Utah. The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) and broadcast partner CBC today announced that The JUNOS Presented by TD will reveal the 2020 award winners in a special, virtual presentation on Monday, June 29 at 7 p.m. ET (4 p.m. PT) on the free CBC Gem streaming service, CBC Music’s Facebook, YouTube and Twitter pages, and for audiences around the world at CBCMusic.ca/junos. Featuring a lineup of guest presenters and special performances, the awards will be given out across all 42 categories.

Audiences will experience exclusive performances by Indigenous artist iskwē (2020 Adult Alternative Album of the Year and Music Video of the Year nominee), alt-pop duo Neon Dreams (2020 Breakthrough Group of the Year nominee), and bluegrass ensemble The Dead South (2020 Traditional Roots Album of the Year nominee). Due to the escalation of the COVID-19 crisis and its impact on communities across the country and around the world, the difficult decision was made to cancel the 49th annual JUNO Awards that were set to take place in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in March 2020.

Alessia Cara, who was scheduled to host The JUNO Awards Broadcast in Saskatoon, leads this year with a total of six nominations including: JUNO Fan Choice, Single of the Year, Album of the Year, Artist of the Year, Songwriter of the Year and Pop Album of the Year. Tory Lanez received five nominations including JUNO Fan Choice, Artist of the Year, Rap Recording of the Year and two nominations in the R&B/Soul Recording of the Year category.

Artists with three nominations include Alexandra Stréliski for Album of the Year, Breakthrough Artist of the Year and Instrumental Album of the Year; Bryan Adams for Album of the Year, Artist of the Year and Adult Contemporary Album of the Year; bülow for Single of the Year, Songwriter of the Year and Pop Album of the Year; Loud Luxury for JUNO Fan Choice, Group of the Year and Dance Recording of the Year; NAV for JUNO Fan Choice, Album of the Year and Rap Recording of the Year; and Shawn Mendes for JUNO Fan Choice, Single of the Year and Artist of the Year.

The host province of Saskatchewan is well-represented with nominations including first-time nominees Hunter Brothers for Breakthrough Group of the Year and Country Album of the Year; Foxwarren for Alternative Album of the Year; The Dead South for Traditional Roots Album of the Year; and Terri Fidelak and Carey Shaw for Album Artwork of the Year.

Winnipeg’s Glassreel Looks Into Their “Crystal Ball” And…They Want A Refund On This Whole Adulthood Thing

Stand-out Winnipeg’s alt rock-pop outfit Glassreel map the delicate journey into unknown adulthood and unmet expectations with new single, “Crystal Ball” — available now.

A partnership between longtime musical collaborators Kelly Beaton and Trevor Graumann — with Andrew Workman and Ken Phillips — Glassreel and their 2019 debut EP Unalike has been heralded throughout North America, with features on 100+ radio stations (including CBC and NPR) and a foothold on the !earshot National Top 50 for multiple weeks. Additionally, their music is featured in several episodes of celebrity chef David Rocco’s forthcoming series, Dolce Italia.

Separately and together, Beaton and Graumann have shared the stage with Wintersleep, Said the Whale, Partner, iskwē, Sloan, Land of Talk, The New Pornographers, Tokyo Police Club, Julie Doiron, and more, and have played SXSW and Germany’s Reeperbahn Festival, to name a few. Their respective projects have enjoyed critical acclaim from Chart Attack, CBC, CMJ, exclaim!, and ELLE, and have charted throughout North America.

The newest single from Unalike, which was recorded/mixed by Ryan McVeigh (Boats) and mastered by Philip Shaw Bova (Father John Misty, Feist, Andy Shauf), “Crystal Ball” amplifies Glassreel’s signature simplicity and sonic clarity, enveloping listeners in the sobering realization that youthful expectations don’t align with adulthood reality.

“The lyrics were born of anxiety…” Graumann shares of his pen-to-paper process on “Crystal Ball.” “That generalized anxiety around not being where you feel you ‘should be’ at this point in life, as well as some specific anxiety about a specific stressful situation that then occurs.

“The line ‘handing your changes in’ got stuck in my head… Like a ‘call to progress.’”

“I remember the first time Trevor played the demo for me,” Beaton recalls. “I remember what I felt and what my impression was: The song was different, and it was special.

“It was born out of shared experiences and a bigger idea I had not yet seen, but one that Trevor had no doubt been visualizing for a long, long time. ‘Crystal Ball’ was and is such an important song — both personally and reflectively — for our band and for one another.”

Uniquely to “Crystal Ball,” Beaton found it would take some time to fully immerse into the flow of the lyrics as Graumann intended them, but the surmountable hurdle would skyrocket the song to the top as one of her favourites.

“There is an ongoing, simultaneous challenge and privilege of singing someone else’s lyrics,” she shares. “Especially those of a close friend, and someone with many shared experiences that have brought us where we are.

“There were days when I would totally blank and/or interchange the words in the chorus… Over time, and our weird journey together, certain lyrics eventually sank in, and I was able to visualize the song as a whole and communicate the idea to the listener.

“When it’s my turn to choose a song to play at rehearsal, I still choose ‘Crystal Ball.’”

Directed by Workman — with videography by Kelly O’Donnell — the video for “Crystal Ball” was shot on a cool Autumn day in Graumann’s neighbourhood. Its muted colour palette, solitary plight and dreary, somewhat prosaic adventure follows a quizzical child navigating a symbolic adulthood, encountering regret, vulnerability, and hope of transformation along the way.

Winnipeg Alt-Rockers BULLRIDER Take the Topic of “Dying” Head On in NEW Single

“Turns out, I didn’t just want to sing about it, I wanted to scream about it.”

That’s BULLRIDER’s frontman Bobby Desjarlais referencing the band’s newest single release, “Dying” — available now.

“It’s about death, yes,” he lays plainly, laughing. “But really, it’s mostly about living life to its fullest.

“I had a very close family member diagnosed with cancer say to me, ‘when you have cancer, you’re the only one in the room willing to make a joke.’

“This resonated with me; the fact they would still take the responsibility to make people laugh while they’re sick and possibly dying is real strength. I wanted to help out and sing about death, which is traditionally a difficult topic to breach.”

Which brings us back to… “Turns out, I didn’t just want to sing about it, I wanted to scream about it.”

All caught up now, the Winnipeg-based four-piece extends beyond Desjarlais (The Bokononists, Attica Riots) to include Ben Ferguson (Ash Koley), Tom Sinnott and Chris Peluk (Alverstone, Mad Young Darlings). Together and growing since 2012, they’ve brought their complete yet complex palate of sonic sojourns — from fun-loving to dark and heartbroken, haunting to near-psychedelic in its experience— to stages at The Forks Winnipeg, Harvest Moon Festival, Dauphin’s Country Fest, ManyFest, Hoot Owl, and more.

Previous singles followed a similar, existential and observational theme; “Live My Life” and “The News” serving as prime examples of the band’s rebellious, tongue-in-cheek delivery. “‘Live My Life’ is about needing less to live and be happy,” Desjarlais says. “I just gotta breathe, sleep, eat, and feel… The rest? You can keep, thanks.

“‘The News’ was written in response to my own bad habit of reading too much of it. I had to get out the anxiety it gives me, and music has always been that outlet for me. I tried to make it less about politics and more about the 24-hour news cycle… It’s not good for anyone to be that plugged in, but there I was, reading the daily horror show every day before I got out of bed. That plugged in.

“Writing this record, from idea to completion, was like watching a picture come into focus,” Desjarlais adds of the band’s 14-track debut, 2019’s Hidden Gems And The Love Of Another, where all three tracks reside. “As different as we all are as bandmates, it just makes sense. With this many compatible writers in one room, it was exciting to see what we can make happen.”
