Clannad Announce ‘In A Lifetime’ Career-Spanning World Tour

0

On April 3, 2020, BMG will release IN A LIFETIME, a career spanning collection from one of the most successful Irish bands ever.

The IN A LIFETIME collection captures Clannad’s incredible and enduring body of work which has, over 16 studio albums, created a legacy that’s influenced a generation of fellow Irish musicians and artists.

IN A LIFETIME is a multi-format, career-spanning anthology containing tracks from Clannad’s 50-year recording career. It will be available as 38 track 2CD set, 2CD deluxe, 2LP, and as an expanded deluxe 100+ track boxset as well as digital versions. In the U.S., an exclusive 1CD set will also be available. Compiled in conjunction with Clannad band members.

The anthology will both delight and excite Clannad’s enormous and loyal fanbase as well as introduce this legendary, influential and culturally important band to a whole new generation of music fans.

Clannad (derived from the word clan meaning ‘family’ in Gaelic) was formed in 1970 by siblings Moya, Ciarán and Pól Brennan and their uncles Noel and Pádraig Duggan (who sadly passed away in 2016), and for a short time later became a six-piece with the addition of Enya Brennan who then went on to have her own successful solo career. The multi-award-winning band have, without doubt, done more than any other group to take Irish music and the Irish language to a worldwide audience. Fusing elements of traditional Irish music and more contemporary folk, new age and rock they have created a beautifully unique and ethereal sound which combines haunting melodies and mesmerising vocals to transcend the sands of time whilst appealing to a worldwide audience of all ages.

After a decade which saw them release five hugely influential and ground-breaking albums, in 1982 Clannad reached wider recognition when they recorded Theme From Harry’s Game for a powerful three-part TV drama depicting the troubles in Northern Ireland. The song became a commercial success upon its release as a single, peaking at number 2 in Ireland and number 5 in the UK, winning an Ivor Novello award and later being used in the movie Patriot Games. It remains the only UK hit single to be sung entirely in Irish.

In addition to the incredible achievements of this one, timeless song, in 1984 Clannad won a BAFTA for ‘Best Original Television Music’ for their soundtrack ‘Legend’ (becoming the first Irish band to win it), which featured music and songs the band were commissioned to score for the Robin Of Sherwood TV series. In the two decades since the band has won a Grammy Award (‘Best New Age Album’ for 1999’s Landmarks), Billboard Music Award, and a BBC 2 Folk Award (for Lifetime Achievement).

Clannad also recorded the soundtrack albums Atlantic Realm, made for a BBC documentary about the Atlantic Ocean, and The Angel and the Solider Boy, a half hour animation without voiceovers, with the music telling the story. In 1993 their song ‘I Will Find You’ (from the album ‘Banba’) was featured as the love theme to the movie Last Of The Mohicans (which saw the band receive their first Grammy nomination). These achievements make them one of the most successful and acclaimed soundtrack artists.

Clannad has collaborated with a diverse range of artists, including Bruce Hornsby, Steve Perry, JD Souther, Paul Young, and Duke Special but their most successful collaboration by far was with enthusiastic supporter and fan, Bono of U2. A fan of the band who declared singer Moya as “one of the greatest voices the human ear as ever experienced,” Bono duetted with the singer on Clannad’s 1985 hit single – and the song which gives this collection its title – In A Lifetime.

Pet Shop Boys recently released their fourteenth studio LP, Hotspot, via x2 Records/Kobalt to critical acclaim. The album reached #3 in the UK, German and Spanish albums chart and #1 on Billboard’s Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart, making it the fourth Pet Shop Boys’ album to accomplish this. Hotspot is the third in a series of albums produced by Stuart Price (following 2016’s Super and 2013’s Electric.) Watch the video for “Monkey business;” HERE. Pet Shop Boys, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, are the most successful pop music duo in UK history and have sold over 50 million records worldwide since they emerged in the UK in 1985 with their worldwide number one single, “West End girls”. They are three-time Brit Award recipients and six-time Grammy nominees and have also been acclaimed for their innovative and stylish tour productions on which they have collaborated with artists and directors as diverse as Derek Jarman, Zaha Hadid, Sam Taylor-Johnson and Es Devlin. In 2016 and 2018 they played four-night residencies at the Royal Opera House in London. Their greatest hits tour – Dreamworld: The Greatest Hits Live – opens on Friday, May 1st at Berlin’s Mercedes Benz Arena, and will see Pet Shop Boys perform at arenas across Europe and the UK in May/June/July.

Rising from the ashes of Joy Division, the enigmatic New Order triumphed over tragedy to emerge as one of the most influential and acclaimed bands of all time. While their debut album Movement (1981) was shadowed by the legacy of Joy Division, going forward the band combined their original post-punk sound with influences from New York’s club scene. The result was Power, Corruption & Lies (1983), released on Factory Records. From this album came the single “Blue Monday,” which has since become the best-selling 12-inch single of all time. They went on to release a string of albums; Low-Life (1985), Brotherhood (1986) Substance (1987) and Technique (1989). Republic (1993) Get Ready (2001) and Waiting for the Sirens’ Call (2005) before Peter Hook’s departure in 2007.

In 2015, the band released their critically acclaimed album Music Complete, reaching #2 in the UK album chart. The album’s title seems to shine a hue on New Order’s new manifesto: new line-up, newly eclectic sound, reinvigorated in their fourth decade as a unit.

New Order performed as part of Manchester International Festival 2017 for a series of unique shows in collaboration with Liam Gillick. These shows were such a success, they were taken to Turin and Vienna in May 2018 to further great acclaim and the live album released as ∑(No,12k,Lg,17Mif) New Order + Liam Gillick: So It Goes.. (2019). Continuing to play sold out shows the world over, recent live dates have seen them headline a four night residency at The Fillmore Miami where January 15 was declared forever New Order Day in the City of Miami Beach.

“Must Be” is Award-Winning Toronto Electro-Pop Artist Mauve’s Newest ‘Must Hear’ Single

0

Canadian electro pop dynamo Mauve has released her dazzling, must-hear and newest single, “Must Be” — the latest off her recent and award-winning EP, Palette.

To say Mauve delivers a velvety lush voice perfectly folded within her infectiously catchy, light but layered brand of chill-bop tropical house and RnB beats would be understating just how immersive and engaging the listening experience for this self-produced artist’s work is.

With more than 1,460,000 streams across all platforms — including features on more than 350 influential playlists — the rapidly emerging artist has stacked those stats with good reason; Mauve was nominated for a 2018 Niagara Music Award for “Best New Artist” and her single “Come Around” took top honours at the 2019 InterContinental Music Awards for “Best of North America.”

The extended features the Toronto-based artist’s recently released EP, Palette, have received are lengthy — including, but not limited to, NBC-2, FOX40 News, ABC7 News, CBC Music, 107.3 Virgin Radio, Buzz Music LA, Talk About Pop Music, WFMZ-TV 69, Best Kept Montreal, Tinnitist, KOTV-TV CBS-6, IndieCan Radio on SiriusXM, MediaPro Music, Beat Lounge, Canadian Beats, Cashbox Canada, The Girls at the Rock Show, Daily Herald, 100FM, CHUO FM, and many many more. A frequent live performer, she has taken the stage at events such as YOUTH DAY Global at Yonge-Dundas Square, and the 2020 Toronto Music Expo.

“Sometimes love can come to you unexpectedly,” Mauve says of the new song, “Must Be.” “I wrote this after thinking back in awe at how suddenly the emotions can come to you…

“It just changes everything from night to day,” she continues. “Suddenly everything you once saw as dull and grey is now beaming and bursting with light, and that’s because this startling feeling of love has popped into your life. This song represents that extra boost in your stride and the never-ending smile you get on your face due to the elated feelings of love.

“And it’s not just talking about love in the relationship sense — it can be the love you get through the birth of a child or through accomplishing something you never thought would be possible. It’s about that innate sense of joy that you feel comes effortlessly to you, which to me is the sign of true love.”

“Must Be” is the newest single off Mauve’s debut EP, Palette, released Fall 2019.

A rich voice in a small frame, Mauve grew up inspired by theatrical performances before turning to her piano; from the age of 14, she has worn her heart on her sleeve as she has learned to play and write her own songs.

“I have always been a lover of all forms of art, because to me there is no limit for what can move and inspire somebody,” she says, on her inspiration behind her recently released album, Palette. “Of course, the musical form of art is what stuck with me the most, but visual arts is another form that can express emotions through colour and shape.”

Influenced by the deep and emotional vocals of Amy Winehouse and Sia, you can feel the vulnerability in Mauve’s lyrics from start to finish across the EP, as they are placed over a catchy, tropical house beat. She gives credit to her home city of Toronto for providing many outlets and opportunities to explore different styles of music through its vibrancy and the diversity of its people.

“I see sound as having the ability to express feelings and connect people through the different colours of tone as well,” she continues. “When creating a song, it is like you are an artist with a paintbrush, combining different colours together and layering them to set a scene for someone else to imagine. It’s like you are painting, but with sounds.

“I feel like this new collection of songs is an embodiment of different emotions and experiences, like the different colours you experience in life.

“I hope to create an expression of music that people can visualize, and evoke different feelings from, just as a painting would. I am not one to create a song that is dull or meaningless to me, so that is why I want all of my work to feature splashes and pops of colours that spark life and creativity to those who are listening.”

“Must Be” and Palette are available now.

Lucinda WIlliams To Release Her Boldest Album Yet With ‘Good Souls Better Angels’ On April 24

0

On April 24th, three-time Grammy Award winner Lucinda Williams unabashedly takes on some of the human, social and political issues of our day with her boldest and most direct album to date, Good Souls Better Angels (Highway 20/Thirty Tigers). During the course of her celebrated four-decade, pioneering career Williams has never rested on her laurels as she continues to push herself as a songwriter. On Good Souls Better Angels, she has much she needs to get out.

In 2014 and 2015, Williams released two critically acclaimed double albums back to back with Down Where The Spirit Meets The Bone and The Ghosts Of Highway 20, respectively. Both releases found her experimenting with arrangements, vocals, song structure and personal subject matter. On Good Souls Better Angels, Williams changes course and chooses to forgo the personal and narrative-based songcraft that has become synonymous with her name and instead speaks to some of the injustices permeating our society. The new songs cut straight to the core with frank and honest commentary on domestic abuse (“Wakin’ Up”), the constant barrage of news (“Bad News Blues”), the dangerous, quick to judge and convict aspects of social media (“Shadows & Doubts) and the haunting reality of the “Man Without A Soul”.

Williams recorded Good Souls Better Angels backed by her remarkable, long time band, featuring Butch Norton (drums), Stuart Mathis (guitar) and David Sutton (bass). The rock-solid unit propels the music with both fire and finesse, particularly on the raw blues number “You Can’t Rule Me”, which kicks off the album with equal parts attitude and swing.

Good Souls Better Angels also features some of Williams’ most intimate and up front vocals on record. She addresses the pain of depression on the achingly beautiful “Big Black Train” and tenderly delivers a poignant song of hope with “When The Way Gets Dark”. She encourages us to push forward on the path of promise and perseverance on the deeply soulful and moving album closer “Good Souls”.

Good Souls Better Angels marks the first time Williams’ husband/manager Tom Overby is credited as a co-writer on many of the new songs. The album was co-produced by Williams, Overby and Ray Kennedy, who last worked with Williams on her 1998 landmark album Car Wheels On A Gravel Road.
