Becoming a Better Drummer, Step-by-step

0

Drumming can be both a creative outlet and a career option. Regardless of the reason why you are interested in drumming, getting better should always be on your mind. Below, we will look at some steps you can take to get better at drumming

Nail the Fundamentals

As with everything else in life, start with the fundamentals. It may feel a bit silly, especially if you would like to play in front of a crowd in a few months’ time. Nailing the fundamentals ensures that you will never falter on stage, regardless of its size. Nailing the fundamentals will also make it very easy to master advanced drumming techniques.

Find Drummers You Like

Every drummer has their own style of playing. You will develop yours as time goes on but for now, if you are just starting out, it is always a good idea to find drumming giants in whose footsteps you can follow. They will teach you ways to play that you may not have thought of, and their cumulative experiences will undoubtedly make you a better drummer.

Assess Your Quality

Always analyze the quality of your training sessions. Plug in a good pair of headphones to a good amplifier and listen to your training sessions. Doing so will help you identify areas that need improvement. Work on what you do not like when you listen to your training sessions. Doing so will help you drastically improve.

Join a Local Drumming Community

As with finding a mentor to help you with your training, it is always a good idea to join a local drumming community. A group will sit down with you and point out what your weaknesses are. Also, joining a local band might open up some opportunities for gigs and performances, both of which will help improve your confidence and add to your experience.

Learn to Relax

Drumming should be done from the shoulders and not from the wrists. When your arms are tensed up, you will be forced to play from the wrists or using your fingers. This can seriously strain your hands. Learning to relax will help you play lighter and give you the liberty of increasing or lowering your volume as you play. Relaxing also gives you an opportunity to control the tempo and emotion of the beats you are playing, as you will not be forcing your beats but rather letting the notes flow from your drums and drumsticks.

Value Quality Over Quantity

You should always strive to play the best you can, even during your training sessions. When you have this mindset, you should try to make incremental changes whenever you play. It does not matter how many hours you train if you are not improving.

Be Humble

Being humble means that you understand there will always be something new to learn. New techniques will emerge and trends will change. Be humble enough to understand that you will need to keep learning so that you can stay up to date on everything going on in the drumming world.

Take Consistent Action

In addition to all of the above, you should try to train consistently. Doing so improves muscle memory so that you are able to play effortlessly. Taking consistent action also helps improve your quality and gives you more material to work with when analyzing your training sessions.

Conclusion

Becoming a drummer can be an exciting journey. To get better as a drummer, you have to train consistently, always be improving, take advice and lessons from those who came before you and be humble enough to know that there will always be something new to learn.

Tips for Actually Relaxing on Vacation

0

Naturally, we all want to lead healthier, happier lives, which is why taking well-being seriously is crucial. Physical health isn’t just impacted by physical factors, it can also be affected by emotional aspects, and vice versa, which is why taking time out to relax every so often is crucial for your well-being. The question is, of course, how do you go about actually relaxing when you’re away on vacation?

It’s all well and good heading off to some exotic corner of the globe, but switching off isn’t always as easy as you might think. The fact is that when it comes to relaxing on vacation, you need to get creative to ensure that once you’re away on your trip, you’re actually able to relax.

Wondering how you can do that? Have a read below and the following tips should help you to relax and de-stress while you’re away!

Don’t Overdo It

One of the most important things that you can do while you’re on vacation is not to overdo it. If you actually want to return from your trip feeling relaxed and refreshed, you need to be mindful of what it takes to make you feel like that.

A common mistake a lot of people make on holiday is trying to pack too much into their trip — trying to see and do everything will only cause you more stress. A vacation is about relaxing and unwinding, and it’s important to remember that.

Don’t plan to do too much while you’re away. Instead, spend at least every other day relaxing by the pool or on the beach. By taking some much-needed time out for your well-being, you will feel incredible for it. For extra support, some travelers also turn to natural wellness aids like Medterra sleep gummies, which can make it easier to unwind fully and enjoy deeper rest while away.

Enjoy Your Hobbies

Vacations are the perfect time to immerse yourself in some of your favorite hobbies and activities. Utilize your time off to enjoy the things that make you feel happy and relaxed — whatever these may be.

Whether you’re someone who loves to read, likes to place bets online via their favorite betting and casino site, or enjoys adult coloring, you should take advantage of your free time to do the things that you love.

Instead of rushing around trying to see and do everything, make time to enjoy the things that you’re passionate about. By making an effort to spend time enjoying your hobbies while you’re away, you can give your emotional health a boost.

Try New Things

While you’re away, if you see an activity that you feel may benefit your well-being, don’t be afraid to give it a try. There’s no harm in trying new things, particularly activities that have the potential to give your mental health and happiness a boost.

Whether it’s an early morning yoga class on the beach, a crafting workshop, or a walking tour that would boost your energy, don’t be afraid to give it a try. After all, vacations are all about trying new things.

There you have it, everything that you need to know about actually relaxing on your next vacation and taking advantage of the time away.

Ani DiFranco Announces Special Guest Jesca Hoop for February Tour Dates

0

Singer/songwriter/feminist/activist author Ani DiFranco announced her next round of shows starting February 7, with special guest Jesca Hoop. The February tour supports DiFranco’s 2019 memoir, No Walls and the Recurring Dream and the accompanying No Walls Mixtape. A full list of tour dates is below.

About joining the tour, Hoop notes, “Across the last shows of my November 2019 tour, Ani DiFranco would cross my mind as I sang to the rooms of loving listeners. This was unusual and remarkable. Having now received the call to support Ani, these “visitations” make a bit more sense. It is with joy and gratitude that I join the ride to warm the room for the first girl who lit a fire in me…and through her tiny enormous presence on stage communicated directly to me that ‘I CAN DO IT.’”

On January 22, DiFranco will be awarded the prestigious ‘People’s Voice Award’ at the 2020 Folk Alliance International Conference. The People’s Voice Award is presented to an individual who unabashedly embraces social and political commentary in their creative work and public careers. Past recipients include Bruce Cockburn, Bonnie Raitt and Buffy St. Marie. On January 23, DiFranco will also host a panel at the conference discussing No Walls and the Recurring Dream, and on January 25 she teams up with Zoe Bookbinder and Leyla McCalla for “Art as Activism as seen through Zoe Boekbinder & Ani DiFranco’s Prison Music Project.” The panel previews the forthcoming prison music album Long Time Gone as a template for combining art and activism.

Widely considered a feminist icon, Grammy winner Ani DiFranco is the mother of the DIY movement, being one of the first artists to create her own record label in 1990. While she has been known as the “Little Folksinger,” her music has embraced punk, funk, hip hop, jazz, soul, electronica and even more distant sounds. Her collaborators have included everyone from Utah Phillips to legendary R&B saxophonist Maceo Parker to Prince. She has shared stages with Justin Vernon, David Byrne, The National, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Pete Seeger, Kris Kristofferson, Billy Bragg, Michael Franti, Chuck D., and many more.

Her most recent studio album Binary was released in June 2017 on Righteous Babe Records. Over the years she’s performed at countless benefit concerts, donated songs to many charity albums, and given time and energy to many progressive causes. She has learned from and demonstrated beside Gloria Steinem, Jesse Jackson and Dennis Kucinich. In 2004, she marched in the front row of the March for Women’s Lives along with Margaret Cho, Janeane Garofalo, Whoopi Goldberg, and many others, later performing on the main stage. She has beaten the drum for voter registration and turnout with “Vote Dammit” tours in multiple presidential election years, including most recently in 2016. She’s currently on the board of Roots of Music, an organization that provides at-risk youth with support and musical education in New Orleans, and the creative council of EMILY’s List, which helps elect pro-choice Democratic women to office.

Thomas’ collaboration with Carlos Santana on “Smooth” was also named the No. 2 “Most Popular Song Ever” on Billboard’s list of the “100 Most Popular Songs Behind ‘The Twist.'” He was also named to Billboard’s “Top 20 List of Hot 100 Songwriters 2000-2011” at No. 5 and was the top-ranked artist/songwriter on the list. His fourth studio album, 2019’s Chip Tooth Smile featured the hits “One Less Day (Dying Young)” and “Can’t Help Me Now.” Total record sales for his output exceeds 80 million worldwide.

Formed in Los Angeles in 1989 by singer-songwriter Jakob Dylan, The Wallflowers have won two GRAMMY® Awards and earned a string of Gold and Platinum albums since their eponymous debut album in 1992.

The Wallflowers released Bringing Down the Horse in 1996, which featured the hit songs “One Headlight,” “6th Avenue Heartache,” “3 Marlenas” and “The Difference.” “One Headlight” received two GRAMMY® Awards (“Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal” and “Best Rock Song”) in 1998 and is also listed at No. 58 in Rolling Stone’s list of the “100 Greatest Pop Songs.” In 1998, their cover of David Bowie’s “Heroes” for the Godzilla soundtrack was Top 10 rock track, as well. The Wallflowers went on to release an additional three albums before going on hiatus in 2005. Dylan then launched a solo career and released 2008’s Seeing Things and Women + Country in 2012. Two years later, the Wallflowers reunited with their sixth studio album, Glad All Over.

Jakob Dylan starred in Echo In the Canyon, one of 2019’s most successful theatrical documentaries. The film and accompanying soundtrack explored the beginnings of the Laurel Canyon music scene and featured new studio recordings of classic songs by The Byrds, The Mamas & The Papas and others, as recorded by Fiona Apple, Beck, Cat Power, Eric Clapton, Norah Jones, Regina Spektor, Stephen Stills, Neil Young, and more, all interpreted by, and featuring, Dylan.
