“British-Born Bastard” / Cheeky Canadian Pop Rocker Zach Oliver Releases Battlecry in New Album, Banzai

0

Canadian pop-rock n’ roll bad boy and self-described “bastard” Zach Oliver has released his personal anthem and “battle cry” in the form of new 10-track LP, Banzai — available now.

“I feel alive in this music,” the Toronto-based artist says of the album as a whole. “I think that’s where the name came from.

“I love that ‘banzai’ is used as a patriotic cheer and battle cry. It’s kind of like the Japanese version of ‘hooray’ and shouted in the same sense as ‘long live the King’ in English…

“This relates EXACTLY to how I felt making this,” he continues. “It’s a battle cry for being original. I wanted to celebrate coming into my own.

“Although 90% of the album is about a relationship, a lot of the back-end emotion came from just being 21 or 22 years old, and figuring out who I wanted to be and what I wanted to say.”

That understanding of what makes Banzai tick serves as a syllabus of sorts on what makes Zach Oliver… Well, Zach Oliver.

Born in the suburbs of Essex, England, the multi-talented and magnetic musician grew up idolizing the likes of everyone from Stevie Wonder to Amy Winehouse — not to mention whatever varied interests his parents had playing around the house.

He landed in Canada at age eight with, as he puts it, “not much else to do” but watch Jack Black’s School of Rock and try his hand at music with his mum’s old guitar. “The hobby turned into a lifestyle,” he recalls. “I started performing and writing as much as I could. I even started integrating it into my elementary school curriculum any way possible.”

A highly influential high school music teacher helped Oliver continue to foster the interest, and eventually he landed at Fanshawe College’s Music Industry Arts program. “I was definitely surrounded by like-minded musicians and knowledgeable professors,” he recalls, “but I also truly experienced what it meant to be a ‘college student.’

“I was broke. I drank cheap beer. I survived off ramen noodles. I racked up debt.

“But I kept writing songs and brought those experiences into them.”

His first summer post-grad resulted in a self-recorded, self-produced five-track EP debut, Every Other Day and later a sophomore EP, One Night Last Summer. Those early forays blasted open doors, and Oliver’s team grew, including manager Mark Lea (Nelly Furtado, Philosopher Kings, FeFe Dobson) and co-writing and production results via GRAMMY Award-nominee Jarvis Church (Nelly Furtado, K’naan, Philosopher Kings) and David Bendeth (Paramore, Breaking Benjamin).

“‘Banzai’ was the first song I made with Damian Birdsey,” Oliver says of the albums eponymous track, co-created alongside the noted up-and-coming producer. “What I loved about the creation process that night was that it was completely organic.

“We barely even talked about the song, it kind of just… Came to be.

“By the end of making this record, I found a sound I believed in. I was finally just being totally myself in my writing.”

Banzai is available now.

Alessia Cara to receive 2019 Allan Slaight Music Impact Honour at the 2019 Canada’s Walk of Fame Awards

0

Canada’s Walk of Fame announced today that multiplatinum-selling, singer-songwriter Alessia Cara will receive its 2019 Allan Slaight Music Impact Honour at the Canada’s Walk of Fame Awards Show on November 23, 2019. Music Impact has been added to this distinction (formerly known as the Allan Slaight Honour) to shine a greater light on a Canadian artist who has had a significant music influence within Canada, and whose career in the music industry has been further recognized around the world.

“Alessia Cara’s soulful, expressive songwriting and artistry makes her a voice for her generation. She has the remarkable ability to inspire, unite, and bring important issues that affect today’s youth to the forefront through her music,” says Jeffrey Latimer, CEO of Canada’s Walk of Fame. “Alessia’s powerful campaign with I Am That Girl has made a positive impact to change social conversations, and empower young women everywhere. We are incredibly proud to celebrate and recognize Alessia with the Allan Slaight Music Impact Honour at this year’s 2019 Canada’s Walk of Fame Awards.”

“Such a genuine honour to be recognized this way by my home country. Knowing that I’ve made any impact at all, let alone something of this capacity feels incredible,” says Alessia Cara. “I’m so proud to represent Canada in any way I can; and I hold this one super close to my heart. The 15-year-old me wouldn’t have believed it.”

Canada’s only “Best New Artist” Grammy Award winner and Canadian singer/songwriter and Def Jam Recordings artist Alessia Cara emerged onto the music scene in 2015 with her global anthem “Here.” Cara’s first release “Here” grabbed the world’s attention when it garnered over 500,000 streams on Soundcloud in its first week, going on to become Spotify’s Most Viral Song of 2015 selling over 3 million copies. A five-track EP, Four Pink Walls, soon followed before the release of the full-length certified platinum KNOW–IT-ALL. Alessia lent her voice to “How Far I’ll Go,” the official song for Disney’s animated film Moana, penned by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Her multi-platinum #1 hit single, “Scars to Your Beautiful,” is Cara’s gut-wrenching take on female identity, on body image and on deleterious behaviors in the name of beauty. “Stay” her #1 hit with Zedd has sold over 2 million copies and has been called the “Song of the Summer.” “1-800-273-8255,” her most recent #1 smash with Logic went platinum 5x, contributing to her 6 global smash hits and 8.5 billion streams worldwide. She was one of the most streamed new female artists of 2017.

Past Allan Slaight Honourees include Jessie Reyez, Drake, Melanie Fiona, Shawn Hook, Brett Kissel, Carly Rae Jepsen, Shawn Mendes, The Weeknd and Nikki Yanofsky.

THE 2019 CANADA’S WALK OF FAME AWARDS broadcast is slated for December 2019 on CTV. Additional broadcast details will be announced at a later date.

As The Kids These Days Say… Halifax Art-Popsters Alexander and The Great Ones are “2 Yung 2 b in <3"

0

Canadian art-popsters Alexander and The Great Ones have unleashed a NEW video to go with their all-you-can-hear sonic buffet, SUPER TURBO and sophomore single “2 Yung 2 b in <3”— available now! https://youtu.be/CAqBaJU4R-0 “I explored the sounds of the last century not as they were, but as they are,” says frontman Alex MacNeil of the outfit’s debut LP. “Think: heart still pumping, but flecked with rust.” It’s an anticipated release from a group MacNeil affectionately dubs “desperate rogues” and “roving strays”; CBC’s Carsten Knox named Alexander and The Great Ones as “Artist to Watch For” and The Coast lauds them as a “Young Upcoming Artist.” “This was recorded with the help of many of Nova Scotia’s finest musicians. And locally produced gins. “Adulthood was like falling down a steep set of stairs,” he continues, recalling how this all came to be, punked-up cherub cover art and all. “It happened so abruptly and before I knew it.” If there was a plotter following along, they’d map beginnings in what MacNeil describes as Nova Scotia’s industrial northern mainland; from there, he’d complete music school in Sherbrooke, Quebec before venturing on to Grahamstown, South Africa. “I played countless jazz clubs and studied classical music,” he says of his time studying with JUNO Award winning composer Andrew MacDonald and South African jazz luminary Marc Duby, and later in New York to study with guitarist Matthew Stevens (Esperanza Spalding, Terri Lynne Carrington, Christian Scott). “Then, the East called again. “I came back to Canada and lived in a small cottage at the base of Signal Hill in Newfoundland, working at the famous Duke of Duckworth Pub, and leading a variety of R&B and jazz groups around the city.” That cozy little cabin was just the ticket for a few years, but soon heartbreak and wanderlust set in. He landed in Dawson City, Yukon, with no more than a plywood guitar, a tent, and a leather jacket. “My most restful state was a bit shattered, so I went careening westward,” he shares. “I was mourning a few losses, including my early academic musical prospects. “I started bartending in a local hotel and I’d hammer away on the old piano that sat against its saloon walls. “So I started to do something I hadn’t done since high school… I started putting words to music.” Within a few weeks, MacNeil was on the circuit, playing gigs and sharing new music from the live stage. “My love for music was definitely reinvigorated out there,” he says of the northern Canadian city. “There was a new sense of self rising from the old.” In amongst this, MacNeil had been introduced and was corresponding with noted producer Dale Murray (The Guthries, Hayden, Matt Mays, Christina Martin). “I sent Dale a slew of demo tapes made on that old saloon piano. They were all done on my iPhone. “He encouraged me to keep writing and discussed the possibility of making a record together.” That record would come to be SUPER TURBO, a coy and confessional concoction that lands as self-aware before toe-dipping into indulgent realm of camp. “I love theatrics and film and literature,” he muses. “They have a massive influence on my style.” SUPER TURBO is available now.

The Beatles Announce New Limited Edition Collection Of Newly Remastered Seven-Inch Vinyl Singles

0

From 1962 to 1970, The Beatles released 22 UK singles; of those 44 A and B-side tracks, 29 were not included on the group’s British albums at that time. These singles, plus an exclusive new double A-side single for the mid-1990s-issued tracks “Free As A Bird” and “Real Love,” are newly cut for vinyl from their original mono and stereo master tapes by Sean Magee at Abbey Road Studios for a new limited edition boxed set. The Beatles: The Singles Collection presents 46 tracks on 23 180-gram seven-inch vinyl singles in faithfully reproduced international picture sleeves, accompanied by a 40-page booklet with photos, ephemera, and detailed essays by Beatles historian Kevin Howlett. The collectible set will be released worldwide on November 22 by Apple Corps Ltd./Capitol/UMe.

The Singles Collection offers a fascinating view of the creative trajectory of The Beatles’ John LennonPaul McCartneyGeorge Harrison, and Ringo Starr across their relatively brief recording tenure together. Just three and a half years divide 1963’s “She Loves You” and 1967’s “Strawberry Fields Forever,” a remarkable, illustrative example of the band’s rapid, groundbreaking evolution. From the band’s star-making 1962 debut single, “Love Me Do” with its B-side “P.S. I Love You,” to their 1970 finale of “Let It Be” / “You Know My Name (Look Up The Number),” the new collection underscores The Beatles’ breathtaking creative arc.

Because it was rare in the 1960s for UK singles to be released in picture sleeves, the collection’s seven-inches are presented in reproduced picture sleeves from their original releases in several countries around the world, including ArgentinaAustraliaAustriaBelgiumChileDenmarkFranceGreeceHollandIsraelItalyJapanMexicoNorwayPortugalSouth AfricaSpainSwedenTurkey, UK, USA, and West Germany.

The Singles Collection follows the September 27 release of The Beatles’ Abbey Road album in a suite of Anniversary Edition packages. The acclaimed new edition’s Super Deluxe set features new stereo, 5.1 surround, and Dolby Atmos mixes by producer Giles Martin and mix engineer Sam Okell, plus 23 session and demo recordings, most of which were previously unreleased. Abbey Road‘s Anniversary Edition releases returned the iconic album to the top of charts around the world. In the UK, Abbey Road reclaimed the No. 1 position on the official albums chart after 49 years and 252 days, breaking The Beatles’ own Guinness World Record previously held by Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, which revisited the chart’s No. 1 spot in June 2017 with its celebrated Anniversary Edition after 49 years and 125 days.

Zach Galifianakis, like many other comics, dreamt of being a cast member on SNL, and despite some miscommunication about his placement in the crew, he got the chance to work there for a little while. Unfortunately he didn’t last very long. But Tina Fey saves the day.

Thom Yorke’s “Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes” Tour Extended Into 2020

0

Thom Yorke has extended Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes—the touring entity comprised of Thom, Nigel Godrich and visual artist Tarik Barri—to include new dates across the U.S., UK and Europe beginning March 28 and running through July 13, 2020.

Currently playing in the U.S. through its October 29-30 two-night stand at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes features the trio of Thom, Nigel and Tarik performing songs spanning Thom’s solo works, including The Eraser, Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes, Atoms For Peace’s Amok, and of course his recently released ANIMA.

Additionally, ANIMA material will receive its first U.S. network television airing tomorrow night when Thom makes his debut appearance on JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE!.

ANIMA was released June 27, accompanied by a Paul Thomas Anderson-directed “one-reeler,” also titled ANIMA, exclusively viewable on Netflix. Both the album and the short film set to three of its songs have received overwhelmingly positive response, including The New York Times noting both the album’s “subtle, complex, changeable layerings and richly shadowy sounds” and praising the film as “elusive, dreamlike and worthy of its leading man: a singer who knows how to move.” Featuring several songs debuted live over the course of previous Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes performances, ANIMAwas written by Yorke, produced by Godrich and features the London Contemporary Orchestra on all nine tracks.

Reaction to the first few Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes U.S. performances in the wake of ANIMA’s release has been borderline ecstatic. Stereogum raved, “Complex programmed beats plus heavy rhythmic guitar and bass work added up to a powerful launchpad for Yorke’s one-of-a-kind voice, which performed its usual heavenly acrobatics Monday. What often scans as textural on record was much more visceral on stage… this was not a chin-stroking intellectual exercise. Yorke and company were putting on a goddamn show,” while the Columbus Dispatch described TMB as “an immensely effective immersive experience” and Pittsburgh Music Magazine praised the show’s “rave-like atmosphere with visuals that were stunning, dizzying, and dreamlike.”
