“Summersault began as a little idea. We asked a handful of Canadian bands we were fans of to join us on a few outdoor shows in 1998. The bands agreed and Summersault was born. The next year our list grew to include International bands like the Foo Fighters, Deftones, Smashing Pumpkins, A Perfect Circle, The Catherine Wheel, and Sum41. Summersault quickly grew to a cross Canada Festival. It was the first time many of these bands had ever visited or played cities like Edmonton, Winnipeg & Halifax. We are proud to have exposed them to these and other incredible Canadian cities back in 2000 and this year feels like the right time to relaunch Summersault. We couldn’t be more excited to bring it to Canada again,” said Raine Maida, Our Lady Peace.

Summersault Festival was first launched in 1998 and included performances from Our Lady Peace, Moist, I Mother Earth, Sloan, Esthero and Treble Charge at Molson Park in Barrie, Ontario to over 35,000 fans. In 2000, Summersault returned with a national tour the included performances from Our Lady Peace, The Smashing Pumpkins, Foo Fighters, A Perfect Circle
The Catherine Wheel, Treble Charger, Eve 6, Sum 41and Deftones.

The Waterboys Release Video For New Single “Ladbroke Grove Symphony”, Announce Tour Dates

0

Ahead of the release of The Waterboys’ acclaimed new album Where The Action, the band have shared the music video for the third single off the record, “Ladbroke Grove Symphony”. Where The Action is out this Friday, May 24 via Cooking Vinyl.

“Ladbroke Grove Symphony” is a tribute to the former bohemian heart of West London, in which Mike Scott invokes his time living and writing among the crumbling, seaside-esque streets of Notting Hill during the 80s.

The accompanying montage video captures the magic of the Grove in all its weird and wonderful counterculture, and features new film and vintage photography of Scott as he tells the story of the song.

“Ladbroke Grove Symphony” is from Where The Action Is, a 10-song genre-defying album that is testament to Scott’s enduring talents. One of the finest British songwriters of the past four decades, his songs have been covered and/or recorded by artists including Prince, who crafted two different arrangements of Scott’s classic “The Whole Of The Moon”, Rod Stewart, Tom Jones, Steve Earle, and Ellie Goulding, who had a top three hit in 2013 with How Long Will I Love You.

Diverse in breadth, Where The Action Is is an album of incredible songwriting, experimentation and musical brilliance. It will excite Waterboys fans and new converts alike.

The Waterboys are Brother Paul (keys), Ralph (drums), Aongus (bass), Jess and Zeenie (vocals), Steve Wickham (electric fiddle and guitar) and Mike Scott (vocals, guitar and piano).

The band will tour the UK throughout the spring and summer with a US tour to look forward to in the fall. See full list of tour dates below. For more information visit The Waterboys website.

Rest In Peace, Dave “Bookie” Bookman

0

There are people who were put on this earth to love music, to help artists, to share their experience and knowledge. Dave “Bookie” Bookman was one of them. The city of Toronto – and Canada’s – music scene wouldn’t be the same without him, and he will be missed.

Rob Thomas Extends North American ‘Chip Tooth’ Tour

0

Multiple-GRAMMY Award-winning singer/songwriter Rob Thomas has announced the second leg of his North American Chip Tooth Tour, supporting his fourth solo album Chip Tooth Smile. The 18 new dates will kick off August 16th in Port Chester, NY for a second night at Capitol Theatre and continue through end of September, featuring special guest Max Frost (select shows only). The tour’s first leg is set to kick off May 28th in Red Bank, NJ at the Count Basie Center for the Arts and will continue through early August.

Debuting at #3 on the Billboard Top Album Sales chart, Chip Tooth Smile has been met with an outpouring of critical acclaim since release last month. “Rob Thomas is an expert at his craft” raved Variety, while Forbes echoed “’Chip Tooth Smile’ is vintage Thomas – smart songwriting, excellent pop/rock craftsmanship, eclectic and at times moving, at times, fun, and always solid.” The 12-track collection features production from Butch Walker (Panic! At The Disco, P!nk) and Benny Blanco (Ed Sheeran), perfectly complimenting Thomas’ long-acclaimed songwriting talent.

Chip Tooth Smile was heralded by lead single “One Less Day (Dying Young),” which is continuing to see success at Hot AC radio, charting in the top 15 following recent performances on ABC’s Good Morning America (WATCH) and The Ellen DeGeneres Show (WATCH). Rolling Stone described the song as “thunderous, life-affirming” and “an impassioned vocal performance,” while Billboard declared it to be “one of the boldest singles released so far this year.” The album also includes standout tracks “Timeless,” inspired by classic songs of the 80s, and “I Love It,” which is currently being used nationwide for the 2019 NBA Playoffs (WATCH).

Fan club pre-sale access for the second leg of the Chip Tooth Tour will begin this Tuesday, May 14th at 10 AM (local), with public on-sale beginning Friday, May 17th at 10 AM (local). Each ticket purchased online for the North American tour comes with a digital download of the new album.

RE:SOUND and SOCAN Collaborate to Create Entandem

0

Co-owned and overseen by RE:SOUND and SOCAN, Entandem brings the music licensing now managed separately by each organization into a single, jointly-operated business. With Entandem, retailers, restaurants, nightclubs, fitness clubs and myriad other organizations that use music will be able to complete their legally-required licenses in a single transaction.

The new joint venture, which builds upon a successful 2017 pilot project that combined music licensing for both parent organizations via an online portal, will be launched in July 2019. Until launch, licensing will continue to be administered separately by RE:SOUND and SOCAN, without change.

“Entandem is all about simplicity,” said Ian MacKay, president of RE:SOUND. “For most businesses that use music, a single licensing organization means a simplified experience, by interacting with one organization instead of two, with one payment for both RE:SOUND and SOCAN music licenses, and one point of contact to answer questions and resolve issues.”

“It’s about time – literally,” said Jeff Stinco, member of Simple Plan and owner of Mangiafocco, one of the many great restaurants of Montréal. “Mangiafocco welcomes Entandem’s one-stop service because it will save us time. We strongly believe that the music we play at the restaurant brings value, otherwise we wouldn’t use it, and it’s only fair that the owners of the music that we license gain fair royalties for their work.”

A songwriter and performer who receives royalties from both RE:SOUND and SOCAN, Stinco added, “By making music licensing easier and more efficient, it will help put more of the value our music provides into the hands of rights-holders like me. It’s a big step forward for anyone seeking to build a sustainable career in music.”

Whether recorded or live music, it is the law in Canada that businesses must pay for the music they use so that those who made the music can be fairly compensated, just as restaurants pay food suppliers and nightclubs pay for the liquor they serve.

Entandem will administer the licensing process as RE:SOUND and SOCAN do today, bringing royalties to Canadian songwriters, composers, publishers, labels and performers. Music licenses will continue to be based on agreements with users or tariffs approved by the Copyright Board of Canada.

While Entandem will collect licenses for live performances and the general use of recorded music in public venues, RE:SOUND and SOCAN will continue to administer royalties separately for recorded music, for example on YouTube, social media, radio, television, movies and online streaming services in single-use or as copies. Background music suppliers will also continue to obtain licenses directly from RE:SOUND and SOCAN.

SOCAN CEO Eric Baptiste added: “RE:SOUND and SOCAN getting together for Entandem means a strengthened ability to reach more businesses that should be paying both music licenses that provide vital support to music creators, especially the emerging and middle-class ones. By making the process easier, we expect stronger engagement across the country and, with that, increased realization of earned royalties for Canada’s songwriters, composers, publishers, labels and performers.”

Entandem will be a partner with businesses that use music, helping them to use music more effectively, increased use of live music, improved audio systems and more, with the essential truth that, the better the music experience, the better the customer experience. An improved customer experience results in extended shopping, increased spending, loyalty and, importantly, recommending the business to others.

Entandem will be jointly owned and overseen by RE:SOUND and SOCAN. However, in its day-to-day activities, it will operate separately from the parent organizations, under separate management.
The new organization will operate nationwide and will have premises in both downtown Toronto and Montréal. Existing licensing teams from each company will come together in shared locations.

Further information about Entandem is available at the organization’s website here.
