John C. Reilly on Ralph Breaks the Internet, Sarah Silverman & mascot hugging

0

By: W. Andrew Powell, The GATE

John C. Reilly returns as Wreck-It Ralph today in Disney’s Ralph Breaks the Internet, and I had the distinct pleasure of chatting with the star about stepping back into the role.

Reilly is a charming, warm, and fascinating actor to chat with, and he’s almost as animated as Ralph when he talks about the character that he loves to play.

Sitting down to talk in New York, Reilly said that getting into character is more like a point of view, since he doesn’t change his voice much for the role. “It’s just like taking a more naive point of view,” he said.

“He’s the guy who gets everything wrong on the first try,” Reilly said. “Ralph makes a lot of well-intentioned mistakes everywhere in his life, and certainly when he gets to the internet.”

“It was a big treat to go back to this guy,” he said, “because I felt really close to him, and he really came from my heart. I built this character with Rich Moore and Phil Johnston on the first one, so getting to go back with him was like seeing an old friend.”

And then, there was the time that Reilly met Ralph’s Disneyland counterpart. So what did he do when they met?

“You know, I saw the mascot; they finally have a Ralph mascot that walks around Disneyland now, and I got to meet him at the premiere and the first thing I did was, I ran up to him and gave him this big hug. He was nice to hug–he’s really big.”

In the end, Reilly suggested that if he had the chance to play Ralph again, “I love this guy so much, I want to spend as much time with him as possible. Maybe they should give me the mascot job at Disneyland. I can walk around and be him all day.”

Ralph Breaks the Internet is out in theatres now. Watch the full interview above to see what Reilly had to say about working with Sarah Silverman, and you can also watch my video interview with Ralph Breaks the Internet producer Clark Spencer about crafting the sequel.

Nile Rodgers, the mastermind behind the disco band Chic and producer of artists like David Bowie, Daft Punk and Madonna, plays live with his band and talks about his life and long musical career in the very studio that was built for him to produce Bowie’s “Let’s Dance” album. Rodgers tells Broken Record’s Bruce Headlam about his chaotic childhood and how it led to his love of musical collaboration, how his love of jazz transformed the music of Chic, and he tells the hilarious story of Prince’s obsession with the song “Let’s Dance.” With his current version of Chic, Rodgers performs blistering versions of “Good Times,” “Le Freak,” “Everybody Dance,” “Let’s Dance” and his hit with Daft Punk, “Get Lucky.”

Marianas Trench Announce Suspending Gravity Canadian Tour

Today, multi-double platinum selling, progressive pop band, Marianas Trench announced their Suspending Gravity Canadian tour which kicks off in Windsor, Ontario on March 6, 2019 at Caesars Windsor Hotel & Casino and wraps on March 29, 2019 at the Orpheum in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The 15-date tour will be held at venues that will give the fans more of an up-close-and personal live experience, and feature the powerhouse Vancouver quartet’s signature high-energy performance, while showcasing material from their forthcoming studio album “Phantoms” in addition to hits from their previous double platinum and gold-selling albums.

“After months of hibernating in the studio, it’s time to get back on stage in front of our fans and share some new music with the world. We couldn’t be more excited. Time to dust off the shiny pants and stretch out the glutes, the Trench is back,” said lead guitarist Matt Webb.

Last week, the band released their latest single “I Knew You When” (604 Records), an upfront take on moving on from a former relationship and the lingering memories that remain. “I Knew You When” is the perfect combination of fresh pop-rock beats that blend seamlessly with lead singer, Josh Ramsay’s incredible vocals.

“I often find pop dance tracks don’t really have much lyrical substance. To quote Dave Grohl, “It’s catchy and fun to dance to, but if your favorite song is about your butt, you have a problem.” I wanted to make a fun pop dance track that actually meant something to me, personally,” added Ramsay.

“This is about long term, messy, real life love. Love with consequence. Not about drunken lust, or doing shots in a bar, or “living life for just tonight,” but the kind of real-life relationship that takes a decade to build, through ups and downs. If I’ve learned one thing in my life as a performer it’s this; if you’re going to sing a song every night for the rest of your career, you better mean it – and I do.”
Joining Marianas Trench on tour is platinum-certified, break out Canadian duo Elijah Woods x Jamie Fine. EWxJF is a delicate marriage of exploratory musical styles and masterful emotional play. The duo purposefully breaches the boundaries of pop music touching on many influences including Hip-Hop and R&B that consistently shake up their sound.

Over the last decade, Marianas Trench have consistently raised the musical bar both in the studio and via their explosive live shows. They have built their name on relentless touring across Canada and globally, headlining tours in the USA, Australia, New Zealand and Europe.

Since their 2006 debut, Fix Me, Marianas Trench have had two certified, double platinum-selling records (Masterpiece Theatre, Ever After) and two certified gold-selling albums with chart topping hits including ‘Rhythm Of Your Heart,’ ‘Haven’t Had Enough,’ and ‘Who Do You Love.’ Along with double platinum and gold digital singles, the band has also garnered multiple SOCAN and MMVA Awards, number 1 videos on MuchMusic, JUNO Award nominations and won the 2013 JUNO Award for Group of the Year. Ramsay also received a GRAMMY nomination in 2013 for co-writing and producing Carly Rae Jepsen’s international breakthrough smash and certified US diamond selling single “Call Me Maybe.”

Tom Wilson’s Lee Harvey Osmond Announces New LP, Shares First Single

0

When Tom Wilson created the moniker Lee Harvey Osmond he wasn’t entirely certain if this was a new stage name or merely a provocative handle for the musician/artist collective assembled by producer Michael Timmins to record a collection of Tom Wilson songs that would become A Quiet Evil. This was the first of four albums bearing the featured artist Lee Harvey Osmond. The Folk Sinner was next, followed by the break through Beautiful Scars. It was during this time between releasing Beautiful Scars and recording Kings and Kings with Blackie and The Rodeo Kings that Wilson went public with his recent discovery. He was not exactly the person he thought he was.

In his 50s, Wilson learned that the parents who raised him were not his birth parents; that, in fact, he was adopted and that his biological mother was a long time family friend from the Kahnawake reserve, just outside of Montreal. Grappling with this newfound sense of himself plunged Wilson into a quest for his heritage and his truth, and led to the writing of his bestselling autobiography, Beautiful Scars (Doubleday Canada). The book is a colourful and truthful tale of this quest, and his life’s tribulations and successes along the path.

“It is a story of finding your way home,” he says. “It’s a story of adoption, of growing up thinking you’re a big, sweaty, Irish guy, and finding out at the age of 53 that you’re a Mohawk.”

The discovery of his true heritage and the culture that it carries now informs all of his art. On this fourth Lee Harvey Osmond album, Mohawk, due out January 25 via Latent Recordings, Wilson continues down the path of his “long way home, ”Wilson says. “It is my way of showing honour and respect to a culture that I’m just shaking hands with. My truth was hidden from me – I was born a Mohawk baby, and finally I’m becoming a Mohawk man,” a line he sings on the LP’s first single, “Mohawk”, available to stream today.

Under the steady hand of producer Michael Timmins, the musician collective Lee Harvey Osmond revives the origins of ‘Acid Folk’ with appearances from old friends Ray Farrugia (percussion), Aaron Goldstein (steel guitar), Jesse O’Brien (keyboards) and introduces Anna Reddick (bass). The expanded use of Darcy Hepner’s brass and baritone sax and brilliant harmonica flashes from blues veteran Paul Reddick and Wilson’s son, Thompson Wilson, sound as guideposts behind the moody grooves of Wilson’s literary recital. Suzie Ungerleider (Oh Susanna) provides the perfect backing vocal ingredient for Wilson’s baritone.

Wilson’s life has been an ongoing quest so it is perhaps inevitable that after decades immersed in poetry, literature and music he would turn attention to visual art, a language that transcends the verbal and the written. The packaging and visual elements of Mohawk incorporate Tom Wilson creations. In particular a painting of the same name from his collection Beautiful Scars: Mohawk Warriors, Hunter and Chiefs

He is still driven to ask questions, to seek meaning from the elusive mysteries hidden beneath the surface of everyday existence, to come to terms with his history, his identity; to aspire to higher truths and to understand his place in the world. “If I have 20 more years on this planet, I hope to keep becoming a Mohawk, because I can’t become a Mohawk the way my brothers and sisters and ancestors did.”
