Sam & Dave to Be Honored with Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award

0

Sam Moore and Dave Prater – the Soul duo Sam & Dave which were one of the primary chart stars at the Stax and Atlantic labels in the ’60s, bringing the passion of gospel to their wailing soul side – were announced today by The Recording Academy as one of the recipients of the Special Merit Awards, The Lifetime Achievement Award. A special award presentation ceremony and concert celebrating the honorees will be held on May 11, 2019, in Los Angeles. Additional details regarding the ceremony will be announced in the coming weeks.

The Lifetime Achievement Award celebrates performers who have made outstanding contributions of artistic significance to the field of recording, while the Trustees Award honors such contributions in areas other than performance. The Recording Academy’s National Board of Trustees determines the honorees of both awards. Technical GRAMMY Award recipients are voted on by the Academy’s Producers & Engineers Wing Advisory Council and Chapter Committees and are ratified by the Academy’s Trustees. The award is presented to individuals and companies who have made contributions of outstanding technical significance to the recording industry.

Other honorees of The Lifetime Achievement Award are Black Sabbath, George Clinton & Parliament-Funkadelic, Billy Eckstine, Donny Hathaway, Julio Iglesias, and Dionne Warwick. Lou Adler, Ashford & Simpson, and Johnny Mandel are Trustees Award honorees, and Saul Walker is the Technical GRAMMY Award recipient.

Let there be sound: when gigs are too far from you

0

Most of us have acquired a home audio system at least once in our lives. Someone chose a simple portable boombox and the most avid music lovers created a concert hall like a powerful speaker system around the living room. More information you can find on theirishcurse.com. Let’s start!

The music system needs to be assembled step-by-step, and in this article, I will propose a step-by-step assembly algorithm. The article is based on personal experience.

So, you love music and decide that you should have a good stereo system at home. Where to begin?

FIRST STEP –FIND OUT WHAT YOU LIKE THE MOST

First of all, you should hear how high-level systems can sound at all, and understand what you personally like. Universal sound does not exist. People love different music, they differ from each other in perception, and even everyone has different auricles.

Would be perfect if you will visit the exhibition, meet two or three guests who are passionate about the sound and understand exactly what you like in the sound. Thick fleshy bass or vice versa – clearly defined? After listening to five or eight good systems, you will surely hear a sound that will become an ideal for you. Memorize it in order to repeat it, or even surpass it in your room.

SECOND STEP – DETERMINE THE BUDGET

A good sound is an expensive hobby. To enjoy the sound of your system, it is not necessary to chase after brands whose value is in the tens of thousands of dollars, but still, there is a threshold, below which it makes no sense to talk about a good sound.

THIRD STEP – SOURCES AND MEDIA

I will say right away that I consider a vinyl record player with a good phono-corrector to be the best source of music. But vinyl is a major league, which seeks from the very first steps is not entirely correct. I would recommend buying as a first source a good DAC, and the first time to listen to music from a laptop, download several HD tracks to it. This is a new audio format, surpassing even super CDs. The density of the HD-Track information flow is 6 times greater than the density of the CD stream, and the music sounds much cleaner, more voluminous, with a significant increase in high and low frequencies.

STEP FOUR – ACOUSTIC SPEAKERS

Immediately after the source, I recommend choosing speakers or simply – speakers. Amplifiers you can test, change, bring home for a day and take away, choosing the best. In the end, properly designed speakers can produce a decent sound even with a simple amplifier, but a great amplifier with bad speakers will not play, no matter how hard you try. Speakers need to spend most of your budget, trying to get the best model available.

The choice of columns – the most difficult. The sound scale is given only by large floor speakers, and this is not a stereotype, but elementary physics.

FIFTH STEP – SELECTION OF AMPLIFIER TYPE

The source is the brain of the system, the speakers are its soul, the booster is a hot, pulsing heart. In order for this heart to be strong and sensual, you will need a sum of at least $ 1,200–1,300, but twice as good is better.

In “Bao,” an aging Chinese mom suffering from empty nest syndrome gets another chance at motherhood when one of her dumplings springs to life as a lively, giggly dumpling boy. Mom excitedly welcomes this new bundle of joy into her life, but Dumpling starts growing up fast, and Mom must come to the bittersweet revelation that nothing stays cute and small forever. This short film from Pixar Animation Studios and director Domee Shi explores the ups and downs of the parent-child relationship through the colorful, rich, and tasty lens of the Chinese immigrant community in Canada.

Buffy Sainte-Marie demonstrates the Mouth Bow while performing “Until It’s Time for You To Go” on TV, 1966

Buffy Sainte-Marie demonstrates the primitive mouth bow, which might be a cousin to another ancient instrument involving twang, the Jew’s Harp (or also known as the jaw harp, mouth harp). After showing how it’s done, she performs one of her best loved songs, “Until It’s Time For You To Go.”

Tony Danza talks about metal band The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza on his The Tony Danza Show, 2005

Well, naming yourself after an actor is one way to get on his talk show! The group derived their name (as a joke) from celebrity Tony Danza, upon one of his professions being tapdancing. The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza released four studio albums before disbanding in 2012.
