10th annual SiriusXM Top Comic invites alumni to return for a 2nd chance at Canada’s biggest comedy prize

0

SiriusXM Canada, the country’s leading audio entertainment company, announced the return of Canada’s biggest comedy competition SiriusXM’s Top Comic. 2019 is a milestone year for the competition as Top Comic celebrates a decade of hilarity featuring the best stand-up comics from coast-to-coast. To mark the 10thanniversary, SiriusXM is opening up the competition to past winners for the first time, giving them the chance to win for a second time, and raising the bar.

“Over the past decade, we’ve had a score of top notch talent from across the country go mic-to-mic for a chance at the Top Comic title, but the winners have never competed against each other on the Top Comic stage,” said Ben Miner, Canadian comic and SiriusXM host. “The stakes are higher than ever as reigning champs now have the chance return to defend their title while Top Comic hopefuls vie to dethrone Top Comic veterans and prove they are Canada’s best comedian.”

Starting today at 10 a.m. ET, Canadian comics can register at siriusxm.ca/topcomic where they will be able to submit a video of their best material. The deadline to register is April 18.

Since its inception, the competition has grown exponentially from a $2,000 prize to the biggest comedy prize in Canada. The winner will take home $25,000 cash and receive global exposure with a guaranteed spot to perform at JFL Sydney in Australia, in addition to spots at JFL42 (Toronto), JFL NorthWest (Vancouver), Just For Laughs Montreal and inclusion in a JFL TV taping airing on a Bell property network. Two runners-up will also receive cash prizes of $2,500each.

Top Comic is part of SiriusXM Canada’s ongoing initiatives to provide a platform for Canadian talent. In 2018, Chanty Marostica took home the grand prize, with Vancouver’s Sophie Buddle and Scarborough’s Nick Reynoldson claiming the runners-up prizes. Following the win, Chanty’s debut comedy album, The Chanty Show was nominated for the JUNO Award for Comedy Album of the Year.

SiriusXM will select the 60 best comedians and provide them with travel grants to audition in front of a live audience and a panel of industry judges, either in Vancouver at Yuk Yuks (May 13 – 15) or Toronto at Absolute Comedy (June 10 – 11) and Yuk Yuks (June 12).

Later this summer, Canadians can vote for their favourite Semi-Finalists with the top six, as well as two additional comics chosen by a panel of industry judges, moving on to compete as Finalists live on stage at the Top Comic Finale this September during Just For Laughs’ JFL42 festival, presented in association with SiriusXM.

Previous Top Comic winners are: Chanty Marostica (2018, Winnipeg), Gavin Matts (2017, Vancouver), Chris Robinson (2016, Toronto), Derek Seguin (2015, Montreal), Faisal Butt (2014, Montreal), Pete Zedlacher (2013, Wawa), Eric Andrews (2012, Brampton), Matt O’Brien (2011, Toronto) and Brian Stollery (2010, Calgary).

SiriusXM listeners will be able to listen to Top Comic content on SiriusXM radio, and those with streaming access can listen online, on-the-go with the SiriusXM mobile app and at home on a wide variety of connected devices including smart TVs, Amazon Alexa devices, Apple TV, PlayStation, Roku, Sonos speakers and more. Go to siriusxm.ca/streaming to learn more.

Walk Off The Earth and Sarah Silverman release new video, “Video Killed The Radio Star”

0

Walk Off the Earth, the Juno-award winning, multi-platinum phenomenon known for their chart-topping originals and unique covers, have released the new single, “Video Killed The Radio Star,” featuring Sarah Silverman. “We’ve always loved collaborating with different artists and met Sarah back in 2012. We talked about recording something fun together ever since and now the time has finally come.”

Based just outside Toronto in Burlington, Ontario, their brilliant 5-people-playing-one-guitar interpretation of Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” exploded on YouTube, garnering over 180 million views. Since then, the band has released a string of successful original songs including, “Red Hands” (#1 at AAA), “Fire In My Soul” & “Rule The World” (multi-platinum in Canada); sold out venues across the globe, from Red Rocks to Wembley, and collaborated with some of the biggest artists in the world (Keith Urban, Snoop Dogg, Nicky Romero, & Steve Aoki). In 2019 the band won a Streamy Award for Best Cover Song with their interpretation of Maroon Five’s “Girls Like You.” They also released a holiday EP, Subscribe to the Holidays, that charted as the #1 independent release in Canada for the last week of November. Both works are natural fits in the band’s wide-ranging and ever-growing repertoire, and tease their big plans for 2019.

Late last year, the band faced a major and unexpected loss with the sudden death of band member Mike “Beard Guy” Taylor. Mike’s incredible ability behind the keys gave the band a sturdy foundation to soar and create. In the wake of Mike’s passing, and with much difficult consideration, the band decided to move forward and use the opportunity to honor and share the extraordinary legacy Mike left behind.

The continued chemistry between band members Gianni, Sarah, Joel, and Marshall is undeniable. With Joel’s driving and prolific percussion work and Gianni, Sarah, and Marshall’s captivating vocal styling and melodic arrangements, 2019 will be a year full of new and original music from the band. Their independent spirit, unstoppable work ethic, and awe-inspiring creativity has catapulted Walk Off the Earth into new and uncharted waters with only bigger and better things on the horizon.

Walk Off the Earth is embarking on an extensive world tour, including stops at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre and Wembley Arena.

Brian Wilson, Ringo Starr, Michelle Phillips, Eric Clapton, Tom Petty Star In Laurel Canyon Doc

0

Echo In The Canyon, out by May 24, 2019, celebrates the explosion of popular music that came out of LA’s Laurel Canyon in the mid-60s as folk went electric and The Byrds, The Beach Boys, Buffalo Springfield and The Mamas and the Papas gave birth to the California Sound. It was a moment (1965 to 1967) when bands came to LA to emulate The Beatles and Laurel Canyon emerged as a hotbed of creativity and collaboration for a new generation of musicians who would soon put an indelible stamp on the history of American popular music.

Featuring Jakob Dylan, the film explores the beginnings of the Laurel Canyon music scene. Dylan uncovers never-before-heard personal details behind the bands and their songs and how that music continues to inspire today. Echo in the Canyon contains candid conversations and performances with Brian Wilson, Ringo Starr, Michelle Phillips, Eric Clapton, Stephen Stills, David Crosby, Graham Nash, Roger McGuinn and Jackson Browne as well as contemporary musicians they influenced such as Tom Petty (in his very last film interview), Beck, Fiona Apple, Cat Power, Regina Spektor and Norah Jones.

Why do We Love Bandcamp?

0

Bandcamp is an entertaining service for both just fans and professional musicians. That means you can either buy content and listen to music or sell it as an author. A wide range of items includes not only digital music and vinyl but also different merch – vintage t-shirts, gifts and souvenirs, tickets or cassettes with glorious historical past. By the way, if you’re a music fan or a musician, come to Chooseonlybest.com to look through the equipment for music listening.

Why Should You Join Bandcamp as a Customer?

It is worth mentioning that Bandcamp is a great idea to support favorite artists. Everybody can donate and buy their tracks with ease. Let’s list some other service’s advantages:

  • It’s a great website to find new artists that wouldn’t have been heard yet.
  • Bandcamp provides releases in a variety of formats.
  • A wide variety of genres are represented on the website and many independent artists are putting their music up on the platform.
  • The website is easy to navigate and to make payments.
  • The service has plenty of free downloads and demo versions.
  • The artists from the whole world can present their creatives and masterpieces.
  • You can follow other fans and see their collections to make new discoveries in the music genre you’re interested in.

When the customer ordered a T-shirt or any other item, he/she gets the dispatch note. However, before making a purchase (whether it is music or merch), note that the non-US customers are still charged tax for digital purchases from the USA.

Why is Bandcamp Valuable for Musicians?

Bandcamp lets composers and musicians get to a lot of audiences and give them good money for every payment. 80-85% of each customer’s money goes to the artist as daily payments in their PayPal accounts. They don’t need to wait for money at the end of every quarter as at the majority of other famous platforms. The artists get the reports and notifications about their current income to the email.

The musicians can exercise full control over their business, including pricing and materials. Besides, they have the right to upload whenever they want and gather all their followers in one place. One of the greatest benefits is the possibility to upload content without any permissions and approvals from the platform. The musicians stream their singles directly to the services to create a preordered list. Then they can choose the composition to offer. However, it is necessary to remember that Bandcamp doesn’t accept mp3s.

Benefits for both Listeners and Artists

All the Bandcamp’s subscribers love their high-quality downloads like .aiff, .wav or .flac. Besides, artists and fans have an opportunity to communicate with each other. When a musician gets an email with notification about the payout, he/she can see an avatar and comments of the fan that has made a purchase. Thus, the fans can leave testimonials and the musicians can send them to email to thank.

The platform thrives in the world of online show business. The total musicians’ revenue is $290M a month and more than $7M a day.
