How Did The Word ‘Cool’ Stay Cool For So Long? Here You Go. Cool.
It’s hep, it’s groovy, it’s outta sight. It’s the word ‘cool.’ It’s not only all of those other things, but unlike those other words, it doesn’t sound dated at all. Slang hardly ever manages that trick. How did ‘cool’ stay cool?

Alan Parsons Rocks The Rockies For August Master Class
Destination Studios are back in vogue and Dark Side Of The Moon engineer, multi-platinum producer and artist Alan Parsons has chosen Eagle Wind Sound in the Colorado Rockies as the location for his upcoming recording master class.
Held the weekend of August 10th/11th/12th, the event lets attendees observe and participate in the recording of a new song for Parsons’ upcoming album. Featured musicians include Alan Parsons Live Project vocalist PJ Olsson and renowned ‘cellist Michael Fitzpatrick, who has accompanied His Holiness the Dalai Lama for the past fifteen years as part of the Tuning The Planet project.
Attendees are fully integrated into the session, which makes this a unique and intense learning experience. The first day features the set up, miking and recording of drums, bass, electric and acoustic guitars, a full compliment of vocals from PJ Olsson, and an original ‘cello part recorded by Michael Fitzpatrick.
Day Two is a day of ‘de-compression.’ “Something of a Magical Mountain Mystery Tour” says Alan. There’ll be a raft of outdoor activities where everyone can let their hair down and chat about music, recording, and the general meaning of life, concluding with a ‘GastroSonic’ gourmet dinner at a local mountain resort.
The final day is back down to business with a full mix session. “This is key,” says event producer Julian Colbeck; “At most of our master classes we’re pushed for time and Alan can rarely do more than a rough mix. Here, attendees will have a golden opportunity to see Alan in action on a dedicated mix session.” Followers of Alan Parsons’ award-winning Art And Science Of Sound Recording video series will now be able to observe Parsons’ many unique mixing skills and techniques; up-close, personal, and live.
With seats limited to 15, the ticket price includes all activities and the gourmet dinner on Day Two plus travel from and back to Denver International Airport from the studio.
The Colorado master class is the latest in a series of live training events for music producers and educators put on by ASSR—the organization behind Parsons’ and Colbeck’s ten hour video series, hardback text book, music stems for remixing (Session Files), and online testing programs.
You Can Buy Into The Future Royalties Of Cage The Elephant
Royalty Exchange, the world’s largest online marketplace for royalties, today announced the introduction of Private Syndicates—a new type of royalty financing opportunity designed to pair larger music catalogs with accredited and institutional investors.
These Private Syndicates meet the unique needs of music catalogs from top-tier artists. The first such offering has already closed, for the co-publishing share of Grammy-winning alternative rock band Cage The Elephant’s catalog.
“Cage The Elephant is a band in their prime with a long career still ahead of them,” said the band’s manager Cliff Burnstein of Q Prime. “Private Syndicates give artists a strong financial foundation for both their personal and professional future, and shows Royalty Exchange can deliver results for any artist… from a single song to multimillion dollar catalogs. Financially empowering artists is the key to creative control, which is the most important factor to achieving true longevity.”
“It was an honor to work with Cage The Elephant and their representatives in this first Private Syndicate offering,” said Royalty Exchange CEO Matthew Smith. “We expect other artists who share their vision of creative and financial freedom to follow their example.”
Under Private Syndicates, Royalty Exchange creates Special Purpose Vehicles (SPV) designed to hold music catalogs like that of Cage The Elephant. Accredited investors can then buy shares of that entity, which grants them a proportional share of the royalty income it generates.
For this first Private Syndicate, Royalty Exchange agreed to purchase Cage The Elephant’s co-publishing catalog (which includes mechanical, public performance, sync, and print royalty streams). The catalog spans the band’s first four studio albums, consisting of Cage The Elephant (including the hit “Ain’t No Rest For The Wicked”), Thank You, Happy Birthday, the Grammy nominated Melophobia, and Tell Me I’m Pretty, which won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album in 2017.
“We expected strong demand for this incredible catalog, but we were taken aback by how fast investors reacted,” added Smith. More than 40 individual and institutional investors participated, attracted by the potential for double-digit yield (based on the catalog’s five-year compound annual growth rate, industry growth projections, and other factors) and the catalog’s strong cash flow.
Royalty Exchange has now raised over $40 million for music creators in just over two years. The company plans to introduce its next Private Syndicate offering in the weeks ahead.
Electric Light Orchestra Release “The U.K. Singles Volume One: 1972-1978” On September 21
Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, will release Electric Light Orchestra – The U.K. Singles Volume One: 1972-1978 on Friday, September 21.
The U.K. Singles Volume One: 1972-1978 presents ELO’s early output of hits and b-sides as originally experienced by the band’s fans in their native UK. This collector’s box set features 15 groundbreaking 45 RPM singles plus 1978’s “The ELO EP,” each fully recreated from their original releases more than four decades ago.
All of the music on The U.K. Singles Volume One: 1972-1978 was remastered from the analog source tapes while each of the 16 7″ vinyl discs in the collection features detailed reproductions of the original sleeves and labels from the 1970s.
Nine of these singles–including “Roll Over Beethoven,” “Evil Woman,” “Livin’ Thing,” “Telephone Line” and “Mr. Blue Sky”–reached the Top 10 of the British charts and remain among the world’s most enduring classic rock songs. On rock radio and beyond, ELO’s hits continue to permeate pop culture. In 2017, “Livin’ Thing” was featured in a widely-seen advertisement for Volkswagen while “Mr. Blue Sky” underscored a pivotal scene in the Marvel Studios blockbuster Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2.
Formed in Birmingham, England in 1970, ELO was designed to create progressive modern pop music combining classical and rock elements wrapped in futurist iconography. Jeff Lynne is ELO’s guiding light and driving force, writing virtually all of the group’s original material while arranging and producing their albums.
From 1972 through 1986, ELO racked up more combined UK and US Top 40 hits than any other band on the planet while selling more than 50 million records worldwide. During the same period, ELO scored twenty Top 20s on the UK Singles Chart and fifteen Top 20s on the US Billboard Hot 100.
ELO was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on April 7, 2017.
A new concert documentary, “Jeff Lynne’s ELO: Wembley or Bust” will make its U.S. television premiere on SHOWTIME on Friday, July 27 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on-air, on demand and over the internet. A celebration of ELO’s enduring and ongoing musical legacy, director Paul Dugdale documents Lynne’s ELO performance at London’s famed Wembley Stadium in front of a sold-out crowd of 60,000 fans in 2017.
On August 3, 2018, Legacy Recordings will release, for the first time ever on 12″ vinyl, Secret Messages, Electric Light Orchestra’s tenth studio album, first issued on CD in 1983. The Legacy 35th Anniversary Edition of Secret Messages, available as a 2LP 12″ 150 gram vinyl set, presents Jeff Lynne’s “eclectic creation” as “originally conceived” with six previously unreleased tracks “all with cutting-edge synthesizers as well as up-front guitar mastery” finally restored to the ELO masterpiece.

SiriusXM Presents The Beach Boys Town Hall in Hollywood
SiriusXM announced today that The Beach Boys will sit down for an intimate Q&A session with a select group of listeners for the SiriusXM “Town Hall” series at the legendary Capitol Studios in Hollywood on July 30. The session will be moderated by Emmy award-winning actor, director, producer and writer Rob Reiner and will air on August 10 at 5 PM ET/PT on Good Vibrations: The Beach Boys Channel (channel 4.)
In a rare live group appearance, founding members Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine and David Marks along with long time Beach Boy, Bruce Johnston, will gather to speak with Reiner and answer questions from fans about their SiriusXM channel, their new album, The Beach Boys with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and their celebrated career as one of the world’s most beloved and respected bands. Fittingly, the Town Hall will take place at the Capitol Records Tower, the home of the band’s first major label affiliation and the studio where they recorded some of their early material.
“It was a thrill to launch a full time The Beach Boys channel in May, and our listeners have loved it,” said Scott Greenstein, President and Chief Content Officer, SiriusXM. “Now this Town Hall is another rarity we are excited to present: all the band members in one place for a special session with fans. It underscores the connection SiriusXM allows listeners to have with some of the biggest musicians of all time  – in this case, the original ‘American band.'”
Jerry Schilling, The Beach Boys’ manager said, “The entire The Beach Boys band and organization is looking forward to this SiriusXM Town Hall. It will be an historic event, as five band members gather for a conversation with their fans and Rob Reiner. They have not all been in the same place since their 50th anniversary shows in 2012. This is a rare and special moment for the band and SiriusXM listeners. It’s been a pleasure working with SiriusXM to make this happen.”
SiriusXM subscribers are able to listen to Good Vibrations: The Beach Boys channel on SiriusXM radios, and those with streaming access can listen online, on-the-go with the SiriusXM mobile app and at home on a wide variety of connected devices including smart TVs, Amazon Alexa devices, Apple TV, PlayStation, Roku, Sonos speakers and more. Go to www.SiriusXM.com/streaming to learn more.
The event is part of SiriusXM’s “Town Hall” series, which features intimate gatherings with an iconic personality sitting down with a studio audience of SiriusXM listeners. After the debut broadcast, the program will be available on SiriusXM On Demand for subscribers via the SiriusXM app and online at SiriusXM.com.
