SOCAN Has Record-Setting Royalty Collections and Distributions to Music Creators and Publishers

0

SOCAN confirmed today at its annual general meeting in Toronto that a record $352-million in total royalties from the use of music by its songwriter, composer, and music publisher members were collected in fiscal year 2017, continuing a seven-year trend, surpassing the previous record set in 2016 by eight percent.

SOCAN connects more than four-million music creators worldwide and more than a quarter-million businesses and individuals in Canada. More than 150,000 songwriters, composers and music publishers are its direct members, and more than 100,000 organizations are Licensed To Play music across Canada. With a concerted use of progressive technology and unique data as well as a commitment to lead the global transformation of music rights, with wholly-owned companies Audiam and MediaNet, SOCAN is dedicated to upholding the fundamental truths that music has value and music creators and publishers deserve fair compensation for their work.

Highlighted by a 44 percent increase in revenue from Internet sources to just less than $49-million, and a 13 percent surge of $76-million in royalties from countries outside of Canada, a record $295-million was distributed to music creators and publishers.

SOCAN 2017 Financial Highlights:

  • Record total revenue – approximately $352-million in overall revenue in 2017, an 8% year-over-year increase.
  • $49-million from Internet collections – while growing with the popularity of music from digital sources, the reality is that because of the dynamics of digital services and the relatively poor discoverability of Canadian content, the average SOCAN creator-member who earned royalties from digital sources collected only a few pennies more than $37 in 2017.
  • Nearly $300-million sent to members – SOCAN’s administration rate is one of the smallest of the world’s top-10 performing rights organizations.
  • A 48% increase in foreign royalties since 2013 – royalties identified, collected and distributed to SOCAN members from international radio, television, online, on-stage and other public performance uses came to $76-million, an all-time high and SOCAN members’ #1 royalty source.

An example of SOCAN’s increasing use of technology is the company’s work with the University of Toronto’s Department of Computer Science & Innovation Lab. At the annual general meeting, SOCAN Vice President of Information Technology Janice Scott led a special session with Adjunct Professor of Music Technology & Digital Media Catherine Moore. The technology leaders discussed the two organizations’ exclusive work together, including in artificial intelligence and machine learning, providing a snapshot of technology-driven projects designed to find and match more music performances with even better volume and accuracy.

The company also introduced its board of directors for the 2018-’21 term. The new 18-member SOCAN board now counts eight women, improving gender balance, reflecting the balance and diversity long enjoyed in the organization’s management team and overall staff.

Minister Of Canadian Heritage Melanie Joly Launches Creative Export Strategy For Creative Industries, Including A New Export Funding Program

0

With Creative Canada, the Government of Canada has a plan to help Canada’s creative industries open up opportunities in new markets around the world. This will not only improve their competitiveness and ensure their long-term success, but also contribute to Canada’s economic growth, job creation and prosperity.

Today, the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage, in close collaboration with the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of International Trade, and the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, is highlighting the Government of Canada’s investment of $125 million over 5 years to implement Canada’s first Creative Export Strategy. This includes the launch of Creative Export Canada, a new funding program that will help creators stand out in the global market.

The Creative Export Strategy will promote Canada’s creative industries by strengthening Canada’s presence in international markets where the business relationships are being built, the deals are being made, and the jobs are being created. The Strategy will also equip Canadian exporters with the tools they need to successfully export their projects.

The budget allowance of $125 million will be divided among the following three key pillars:

Pillar 1: Boost export funding in existing Canadian Heritage programs

To help Canada’s creative industries maximize their export potential, the Government of Canada is increasing export funding for existing Canadian Heritage programs, including the Canada Arts Presentation Fund, the Canada Book Fund, the Canada Music Fund and the Canada Periodical Fund, and Telefilm Canada.

Pillar 2: Increase and strengthen the presence of Canadian creative industries abroad

On-the-field services and support that meet the needs of creative goods exporters are essential. In collaboration with the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service, the Creative Export Strategy supports Canadian artists with additional resources in key Canadian embassies and consulates, such as New YorkParisLondonLos AngelesBerlinShanghaiMumbaiMexico CityTokyo and Sydney.

By developing practical tools to support creative entrepreneurs, such as research, data gathering and statistics, the Strategy will provide exporters with relevant information to help them better understand their targeted markets and make strategic decisions.

Pillar 3: Create a new creative export funding program and build the relationships needed to make business deals

The creation of Creative Export Canada, a new $7-million-per-year export program, will provide companies and organizations with funding to make it easier for buyers and audiences abroad to discover Canadian content. The program is for Canadian companies and organizations that are ready to export and work in a creative industry or in support of one. Examples include music, film, books, video games, virtual and augmented reality or design.

Strategic trade missions, like the mission to China in April, make it possible to develop creative markets. This one-of-a-kind mission allowed the 56 Canadian companies that accompanied Minister Joly to meet Chinese business partners, establish new partnerships and sign 23 business deals worth nearly $125 million.

The development of creative markets also relies on Canada’s participation in international events to increase the export capacity of Canadian creative industries, as with Canada’s participation as Guest of Honour at the Frankfurt Book Fair—the world’s largest book fair—in 2020.

The Creative Export Strategy, including the new Creative Export Canada funding program, responds to the request of Canadian creative companies and organizations to obtain mechanisms and tools to promote and facilitate the export of Canadian content. In this way, the government is allowing the creative sector to shine around the world.

Quick Facts

In 2016, Canadian culture product exports totalled $16 billion. This represents 2.5 percent of all Canadian exports.

The arts and culture sector provides jobs to more than 650,000 Canadians, in addition to the numerous indirect jobs created by cultural products. It contributes 2.8 percent to Canada’s GDP.

Creative Canada supports high-quality content, in both French and English, intended for Canadians and international audiences.

The Government of Canada has invested $1.9 billion in arts and culture, currently the biggest investment by any G7 country.

On stage with Max Kerman & Arkells before #ArkellsRally

By: W. Andrew Powell, The GATE

Last week, before Arkells took over Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton for their gigantic #ArkellsRally–the largest concert they have ever put on–Air Miles invited me to meet with frontman Max Kerman, and go behind-the-scenes with some lucky contest winners.

Kerman and the band are honestly some of the nicest people you could hope to meet. They’re the definition of the great, Canadian band, and the show was a huge hit. Touring the stadium with Kerman and the winners, we got a chance to see the space where the Hamilton Tiger-Cats work out and train, and then we went on stage for photos, and some time to hang out and chat with the band.

It was a lot of fun, not only checking out the workings of the stage and setup, but seeing the fans get to meet with the band.

Speaking with Kerman before the fans arrived, I asked him how it felt planning a concert like this. “It’s really exciting to be able to take on a project this big,” he said. “It’s overwhelming–it really is. I’ve been here for football games, but to see a stage here and all the flooring, it’s kind of breathtaking.”

I also asked Kerman about their upcoming fifth album, and what it has taken so far to make it a reality.

“A lot of conversations,” Kerman said. “You know, we go song-by-song, and each song kind of has it’s own flavour. Putting together a record is just a lot of little things, adding up all together… there’s a lot of things that need TLC, and we like every step of it. There’s like a pulse to it, I’d say. It’s like ‘Peope’s Champ’ has a pulse to it, which has been fun to play, and I think there’s some of that on the record.”

Now, if you’re wondering how you can get back stage with one of your favorite bands, Air Miles has an opportunity for you. This summer, Air Miles launched a special contest in partnership with Live Nation. The “______” with the band contest, is a chance for Air Miles Collectors to win exclusive, “humblebrag-worthy experiences” with artists in concert across Canada. To show their lucky winners a good time, they’ve partnered with Vance Joy, Arkells, Goo Goo Dolls, and Midland, for special experiences that range from meet and greets, backstage access, and even a helicopter ride.

There’s also a grand prize of two VIP tickets to Rockin’ River Music Festival, with lots of extra goodies.

You can get all the details on how you can enter at airmiles.ca/WithTheBand. Plus, the Air Miles Stage Pass is your chance to get tickets and music rewards and experiences, with points, and special giveaways.

Watch Frames of Western Fire and Greed in New Barney Bentall Video

0

Storytelling through song has never been a weak point for JUNO Award-winning Barney Bentall and his roster of releases. This is proven once again in this, his new single, “Don’t Wait For Me Marie” and its cinematic, century-swapping video — is out, check it below.

Between frames of fire and wild horses comes the tale of languished lust and Western greed, woven in a way only Bentall can deliver.

The song, of note, is one of many on The Drifter & The Preacher that Bentall says “ultimately wrote itself.

“There are times I look back and think, ‘well, that’s not where I thought this one was going to go,’” says Bentall. “With ‘Don’t Wait For Me Marie’ I thought, ‘I’m going to write a song about a guy leaving the Fraser Valley near Vancouver in the 1800s to look for gold in the Cariboo.’ I wanted it to be an uptempo bluegrass song because we were starting The High Bar Gang… I was very immersed in that style of music.

“Ultimately, it didn’t quite feel right so I decided to try the song with minor chords and an edgier feel. The feeling, subtext and meaning of the song did a one-eighty and I thought, ‘this was what I was looking for!’

“A song takes you where it wants to take you, if you are open and you surrender to those moments. I love the way music can do that to words.”

Arguably his most personal record to date, and highly anticipated following a five year recording hiatus, The Drifter & The Preacher landed October 2017 via True North Records. Stacked within lays the great paradox that is Bentall: a nomadic homebody with a musicality so innate, a musician and songwriter who is also a friend, father, brother, husband, and son… A man with a life lived.

“This was written for my father-in-law,” Bentall shares on this, his tenth studio album. “Bar none, one of the most interesting and intelligent people I have met.

“He taught me many valuable things and gave me the best friend I have. He died with his boots on at the age of ninety-three. I wrote this at my ranch shortly after on a star-studded night.”

The Drifter & The Preacher is available now.
