Maggie Rogers announces Notes From The Archive: Recordings 2011-2016 out December 18

0

On December 18, GRAMMY Award-nominated producer/songwriter/performer MaggieĀ RogersĀ will releaseĀ Notes from the Archive: Recordings 2011 – 2016 — a 16-track retrospective featuring newly remastered versions of her nascent material, including six never-before-heard songs. Set to be the first release on Roger’s own record label, Debay Sounds via Caroline, this special collection closely documents the artistic evolution experienced on the way to creating her acclaimed debut Heard It In A Past Life.

Yesterday, Rogers appeared onĀ ā€œSesame Street,ā€ joining the iconic lineup of musicians who’ve guest-starred on the show.

Originally from Maryland, Rogers attended New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and released her breakthrough EPĀ Now ThatĀ TheĀ Light Is FadingĀ soon after graduating. Widely hailed as an artist to watch, she released her critically acclaimed Capitol Records debut albumĀ Heard It In A Past LifeĀ in January 2019 and immediately found tremendous success: entering Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart at No. 1 and debuting at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, the album earned praise from the likes ofĀ NPR, The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, TIME Magazine, Vogue, and many more.Ā Heard It In A Past LifeĀ also landed Rogers a nomination for Best New Artist at the 62nd GRAMMY Awards, and led to performances on major TV shows including ā€œSaturday Night Live,ā€ ā€œThe Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,ā€ ā€œThe Late Show with Stephen Colbert,ā€ ā€œAustin City Limitsā€ and ā€œToday.ā€ In addition, Rogers has sold out headline tours across North America and Europe and performed at leading festivals worldwide. To date, Heard It In A Past LifeĀ has amassed over 564 million global streams.Ā  Rogers is currently at work on her new album.

Today, Rogers shares a self-narrated visual to introduceĀ Notes from the Archive and reveal the inspiration behind the project.

As Rogers explains in the video,Ā Notes from the ArchiveĀ took shape from a period of intense reflection on her path as an artist. The full audio is included on the commentary version of the album.

ā€œSo much of this record is about the process,ā€ says Rogers. ā€œIt’s about honoring the time it takes to come to a full form…I wanted to give you the chance to hear me grow and hear me make mistakes, hear me change — because all of those pieces are really beautiful parts of my present, and I don’t feel complete without them in the world.ā€

Along with the six previously unreleased songs,Ā Notes from the ArchiveĀ features newly remastered versions of tracks from Rogers’s early albums, includingĀ Blood BalletĀ andĀ The Echo. In arranging the project’s track listing, Rogers sequenced the songs in reverse chronological order, in an effort to showcase each distinct stage of her creative development. As she pointed out in her recentĀ cover storyĀ for the newly launched Atmos magazine, Rogers found the process of revisiting her past work essential to the writing of her next album.

ā€œI’ve known for a long time that this is something I had to do before I put out another record, because there’s a part of me that’s so deeply missing from the story right now: the 10 years of work that have led up to this moment,ā€ Rogers told Atmos. ā€œI have a whole body of work that I don’t want to leave behind. This record feels like honoring that work, putting the pieces of the story back together, finding my way from bisected to whole. Now, I’ve finally been given the space to let ideas develop and let myself develop. And as I’ve been working on a new record, I see the pieces all coming together and coming full circle.ā€

Renowned Guitarist and Toto Front Man Steve Lukather Talks About His ‘Life-Changing’ Decision to Wear Widex Moment Hearing Aids

0

Steve Lukather, guitarist, singer, songwriter, and record producer, has been playing rock and roll since he was nine years old. “And when I was young, I played really loud,” he explained recently. Over the years, like many musicians, Lukather began to suffer from hearing loss. “But I learned to live with it,” he said. “I wore ear protection for 20 years, but it kept still getting worse, and normal life was hard for me to grasp. At night, I’d have the TV on full volume.”

Something had to change. A respected, award-winning studio musician, Lukather is best known as a founding member of the rock band Toto and has toured extensively withĀ Ringo Starr’sĀ All-Starr Band. He’s played on albums from artists such asĀ Boz ScaggsĀ andĀ Michael Jackson. “This is a way of life for me,” he said. “My ears are so important.” When Lukather mixed his most recent solo album, due out in February, he was wearingĀ WIDEX EVOKE digital hearing aids. The experience was so exceptional, he upgraded this summer to the revolutionary newĀ WIDEX MOMENT hearing aidsĀ with natural-sounding PureSound technology. “It’s really been life-changing,” he said.

Lukather’s long journey to adopting hearing aids is not uncommon, especially among musicians. According to the National Institutes of Health’s Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, 28.8 million U.S. adults could benefit from hearing aids. Yet, most people with hearing loss suffer through hearing problems an average of seven years before giving hearing technology a try.

“I was working so much, I never had time to really deal with it,” Lukather said. “My brain adjusted to the deficit the best it could.” And although he was used to wearing in-ear monitors when he performed, Lukather said he resisted hearing aids for years because he associated them with the large, bulky devices he’d seen other people wear.

After friend and Aerosmith guitaristĀ Brad WhitfordĀ showed Lukather the small, in-ear hearing aids he wore (“I couldn’t even tell!”), Lukather was ready to take the next step and chose Danish hearing aid pioneerĀ WidexĀ for his first set.

“Suddenly, I’m hearing sounds I haven’t heard in 25 years,” Lukather said. “The new record sounds great. I worked on it with an engineer whose ears I really trust, and we were hearing the same things.”

Many hearing aids use generic amplification to address hearing loss. WIDEX MOMENT hearing aids, however, enable personalized hearing treatments by leveraging real-time artificial intelligence technology, allowing the audiologist to tailor their performance to each wearer’s preferences. MOMENT hearing aids also include cutting-edge PureSound processing to overcome artificial sound that can result when direct and amplified sound arrive at the eardrum out of sync.

“Everyone has different hearing frequency deficits, so my hearing doctor adjusted the EQ [equalization] for my particular pair,” Lukather said. “It took a while to get used to because I was hearing frequencies I hadn’t heard in so long. And I know some can be plastic-y sounding, but these WIDEX hearing aids are much better. And I can switch between settings depending on where I am and what I need to hear.”

WIDEX MOMENT hearing aids feature SoundSense Learn technology to automate the process of creating personalized settings based on a series of A-B tests and cloud-based artificial intelligence. Users can store the settings as programs in their smartphones and activate them throughout the day. Widex studies show that hearing aid users prefer the personalized settings achieved through artificial intelligence, and that 80% would recommend the function to others.

Lukather hopes his experience can influence others — musicians, people who love music, and anyone else with hearing loss.

“I know a lot of guys who are aware they could use hearing aids, but they’re afraid to try them,” Lukather said. “I get it. I’ve played loud for a half century; started to get tinnitus in 1986. I was a studio musician for like 25 years and had headphones on my head 14 hours a day, six days a week getting feedback. It’s not unlike a boxer who takes one punch too many. I’m ok saying I needed a hearing device and other guys should be, too. What? Am I supposed to be surprised by it after 50 years of rock and roll? You can’t even tell I’m wearing them.”

He’s right.

Four Timeless Holiday Jazz Titles By Ella Fitzgerald, Kenny Burrell, Ramsey Lewis And Jimmy Smith Boxed Up For New Vinyl Set, ‘Verve Wishes You A Swinging Christmas’

0

This holiday season,Ā Verve Records/UMeĀ is boxing up some of the most classic jazz holiday titles and wrapping them in a new vinyl box set titledĀ Verve Wishes You a Swinging Christmas. This lavish collection brings togetherĀ Ella Fitzgerald‘sĀ Ella Wishes YouĀ a Swinging ChristmasĀ (1960),Ā Kenny Burrell‘sĀ Have Yourself a Soulful Little ChristmasĀ (1966),Ā Ramsey Lewis‘sĀ Sound of ChristmasĀ (1961) andĀ Jimmy Smith‘sĀ Christmas ’64Ā (1964) (also known asĀ Christmas Cookin’) for the first time. With the holidays just around the corner, it’s the perfect swinging, syncopated backdrop to get you in the Yuletide spirit and soundtrack your festivities.

Since the dawn of jazz, the genre’s innovators have pulled material from all corners of the Great American Songbook and beyond as springboards for improvisation — and the Christmas canon is no exception. OnĀ Ella Wishes YouĀ a Swinging Christmas, theĀ First Lady of SongĀ approaches Great American Christmas songs like “Jingle Bells,” “Sleigh Ride,” “The Christmas Song,” and “Frosty the Snowman” with vivacity and sophistication. Sixty Christmases after its release, the album’s timeless appeal has only grown over the years. In a retrospective review,Ā All MusicĀ proclaimed, “this is as good as jazz Christmas albums get,” and just last year,Ā Rolling StoneĀ ranked it No. 1 on their “40 Essential Christmas Albums” list, calling the set “superb” and praising Fitzgerald’s “exquisite phrasing and subtlety.” In celebration of the album’s 60th anniversary, “Frosty The Snowman” has received its first-ever official video, a charming animated video by Fantoons Animation Studio that features Ella and Frosty in a winter wonderland storybook setting.Ā

Verve Wishes You a Swinging ChristmasĀ includes a variety of jazz greats’ instrumental takes on the Christmas canon via three albums that haven’t seen a vinyl reissue since the ’60s. OnĀ Have Yourself a Soulful Little Christmas,Ā guitar masterĀ Kenny BurrellĀ serves up soulful renditions from the carol book (“The Twelve Days of Christmas,” “Away in a Manger“), down the church aisle (“Mary’s Little Boy Chile,” “Children Go Where I Send Thee“) and the R&B wheelhouse (“Merry Christmas, Baby“).Ā JazzTimesĀ declares it “was and is a landmark album” whileĀ All MusicĀ admires Burrell’s “pensive, meditative, precise playing” and calls it “a must-have.”

The box cranks the fun up a notch withĀ Sound of ChristmasĀ by theĀ Ramsey Lewis Trio, which features bassistĀ Eldee Young, drummerĀ Isaac “Red” Holt, and string arrangerĀ Riley Hampton. By swerving around any potential treacle and keeping things light at a mere 29 minutes, Lewis and his colleagues ensuredĀ Sound of ChristmasĀ was a highly accessible slice of holiday cheer. “Lewis avoids the overly reverent… in favor of songs he can tear through with the brisk gait of a sleigh ride and the delight of a full stocking,”Ā All About JazzĀ mused.”[H]is sensitivity to the tastes of the public served him well here.”

Rounding out the collection is a yuletide offering fromĀ Jimmy Smith, the master of the Hammond B-3 organ. OnĀ Christmas ’64,Ā which was known for decades asĀ Christmas Cookin’Ā after being reissued in 1966 with the alternate cover and title, Smith offers up a mix of secular Christmas songs and traditional carols backed by a big band and several trios. He makes a heel-turn from dignified orchestral overtures, like on “We Three Kings (of Orient Are),” injecting the proceedings with funky, down-home energy to get bodies moving this December. “It’s hard to believe that ‘Silent Night’ could ever swing as much as it does here,”Ā All About JazzĀ noted. But all you have to do is drop the needle on these bluesy interpretations to believe Christmas could be so danceable. For the first time in more than five decades, the LP will be released with its original cover and title.

Why wait until the Christmas shopping rush to secure your vintage sounds?Ā Verve Wishes You a Swinging ChristmasĀ offers four titles in their original packaging, all beamed from jazz’s past to warm up your holiday season in the present.
