The Sisters Of Mercy Reissue Rare Greatest Hits And First Three Studio Albums

0

The Sisters Of Mercy are reissuing four ground breaking releases including their first three studio albums and a greatest hits compilation on June 15.

The Sisters of Mercy emerged from the post-punk and indie scene of early 1980s Leeds, and quickly defined a genre of music who’s pioneering influence can still be felt today. They also helped define Leeds at the time as the home of goth rock, spawning many imitators and singlehandedly creating a clearly defined and recognisable scene. Fronted by Andrew Eldritch and backed by his trusty drum machine Doktor Avalanche, The Sisters of Mercy formed their own independent Merciful Release label to issue a series of now rare and collectable singles and EPs. Signing to WEA in 1984, their debut album ‘First And Last And Always’ went on to chart in the UK Top 20 upon release in 1985. The album featured the singles ‘Walk Away’ (charting at #45) and ‘No Time To Cry’ (charting at #63), with a band featuring future Mission members Wayne Hussey and Craig Adams.

At the end of their US tour in June 1985 the band took a break from music, to return in November 1987 with ‘Floodland’ (UK #9). Still aided by Doktor Avalanche, Eldritch hired former Gun Club and Fur Bible bassist Patricia Morrison to complete the new line-up. Featuring the now iconic hit singles ‘This Corrosion’ (UK #7), ‘Dominion’ (UK #13) and ‘Lucretia My Reflection’ (UK #20), production duties were shared with famed Meat Loaf writer Jim Steinman.

‘Vision Thing’ (UK #11) was released in November 1990. With a more hard-rock orientated sound, the group was assembled around Eldritch, featuring Doktor Avalanche, former All About Eve guitarist Tim Bricheno and, perhaps more surprisingly, Sigue Sigue Sputnik and Generation X bassist Tony James. Joined again by Jim Steinman, who wrote and produced the lead single ‘More’ (UK #14), the album featured ‘Doctor Jeep’ (UK #37) and ‘When You Don’t See Me’, and effectively became the band’s last full, new album.

Warner Music are excited to reissue these now iconic studio albums alongside ‘Greatest Hits Volume One: A Slight Case Of Overbombing’, a 2 disc compilation of the band’s WEA-era singles. This elusive, long out of print vinyl reached #14 in the UK upon its original release in 1993, and features the band’s best-loved and most famous songs from their studio recordings.

Governments of Canada and Ontario Invest in Revitalizing Massey Hall

0

Investing in cultural infrastructure helps Canada preserve the experiences of its people and places, and inspires visitors to explore and understand the world around them. The governments of Canada and Ontario recognize that strategic investments in public infrastructure—including funding for cultural projects—play a key role in supporting dynamic communities while creating good jobs that help grow the middle class.

The Honourable Bill Morneau, Member of Parliament for Toronto Centre, on behalf of the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities; the Honourable Charles Sousa, Ontario Minister of Finance, on behalf of the Honourable Bob Chiarelli, Ontario Minister of Infrastructure; and Deane Cameron, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Corporation of Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall, today announced $60 million in federal-provincial funding for the Massey Hall Revitalization project.

The Government of Canada is contributing up to $30 million to this project through the Provincial-Territorial Infrastructure Component–National and Regional Projects, and is being matched by the Government of Ontario, which is also contributing $30 million. Combined, this represents almost two-thirds of the estimated $94 million total project cost. The Corporation of Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall—a charitable, not-for-profit organization—is responsible for the balance of the funding through its newly launched Massey Hall Forever fundraising campaign.

Located in the heart of downtown Toronto, Massey Hall is an internationally renowned performance venue that contributes to the lives of Canadians through arts, employment, and cultural celebrations. Through this Revitalization project, the exterior and interior of the 124-year-old National Historic Site will be fully restored, and a new addition will be connected through the construction of a new 7-storey South Tower.

The expanded footprint will provide much-needed space to enhance artist and patron amenities while also making the building fully accessible. In addition to the 2700 seat auditorium and revamped Centuries performance space in the original building, the new structure will house a third stage featuring a 500-capacity venue. This new venue will accommodate a wide range of artists and cultural events to help bolster the Corporation’s commitment to artist development, education and community outreach. The Revitalization project will ultimately enable Massey Hall to continue to inspire and entertain Canadians for another century and beyond.

Mastodon, Dinosaur Jr. Team Up For Summer Tour

After sonic journeys inspired by fire, water, earth, air, and the cycles of life, GRAMMY Award-nominated hard rock band Mastodon ponder the nature of time on their eighth full-length album, Emperor Of Sand, on Reprise Records set for release spring of 2017. Threading together the myth of a man sentenced to death in a majestically malevolent desert, the Atlanta, GA quartet—Troy Sanders (bass/vocals), Brent Hinds (guitar/vocals), Bill Kelliher (guitar) and Brann Dailor (drums/vocals), and conjure the grains of a musical and lyrical odyssey slipping quickly through a cosmic hourglass.

Since forming back in 2000, Mastodon have certainly made the most of their time. Most recently, their 2014 seventh offering Once More ‘Round The Sun bowed at #6 on the Billboard Top 200, marking their highest chart entry to date and second consecutive Top 10 debut following 2011’s The Hunter. Casting a shadow over pop culture, they received “Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance” GRAMMY® Award nominations in 2007, 2014 and again in 2015. Their music blasted through the Academy® Award-winning comedy The Big Short, animated blockbuster Monsters University, and sci-fi western Jonah Hex starring Josh Brolin—for which the group composed the score. After contributing “White Walker” to HBO’s Catch The Throne, Vol.2 mixtape, Dailor, Hinds, and Kelliher appeared as “Wildlings” in a popular episode of Game of Thrones Season 5.

Not only did they earn the appreciation of Time, Rolling Stone, Stereogum, Billboard, and more, but they also turned many peers into fans, including Metallica, Pearl Jam, Tool, Queens of the Stone Age, CeeLo Green, and Feist, to name a few. Performing everywhere from Coachella and Bonnaroo to Download and Sonisphere and nearly every major festival, they’ve headlined legendary venues such as Red Rocks and sold out shows around the globe. Emperor of Sand siphons raw emotion through the framework of an immersive story and intricate musicianship, digging to the core of what defines Mastodon and all timeless rock ‘n’ roll.
