This Is SO Clever: The Academic Uses Facebook Live As A Loop Pedal
In today’s “Every band is kicking themselves wishing they thought of this first,” a band called The Academic cleverly took advantage of the few seconds of broadcast delay in Facebook Live to construct a loop sampler out of video, so that at any given moment, each member of the band is performing with each other in the past.
We rearranged each instrument on “Bear Claws” to fit Facebook Live’s delay, with each loop getting more complex, adding instruments, rhythms, and melodies. Additionally, by projecting the video live from a soundstage we created an infinite tunnel consisting of all the previously recorded loops.
Call for Submissions: Hometown Hockey 2017
The Rogers Hometown Hockey Tour is working with Alberta Music and Music Ontario on the local musical component of its upcoming winter event, which will roll into communities across Canada this season with a weekend of free outdoor hockey festivities for all ages. Each tour stop is full of activities, prizes, giveaways, and live music from local bands culminating in an outdoor viewing party of an NHL game broadcast live every Sunday on Sportsnet and Sportsnet NOW. Ron MacLean and Tara Slone host live on site from the Sportsnet Mobile Studio.
Performances must be family-friendly in language and content. We welcome submissions from high energy Alberta bands or solo artists with full-band accompaniment who are prepared to perform mostly original music (some covers are acceptable) for an outdoor audience. Performances will be on a heated stage.
- Bands must be able to play up to three (3) sets, 30-45 minutes in length. Number of sets for each band to be determined by organizer after booking.
- Light catering will be provided, as well as a green room.
- Backline is provided, and bands are encouraged to use it, as cold weather can be hard on gear.
Artists will be compensated for their performance. The final performer selection will rest with The Rogers Hometown Hockey Tour.
To be considered for a performance, you must:
- Be available to perform on at least one of the following:
December 16/17 – Airdrie
December 30/31 – Spruce Grove
February 3/4 – Lacombe
February 10/11 – Canmore - Be prepared to perform mostly original music that is family-friendly and high-energy
- Be an Alberta Music member and current Alberta resident
Preference will be given to artists who:
– Appeal to a wide audience
– Have cultivated a local audience and local media coverage
– Have a track record of strong live performances
– Have a strong social media presence

Craft Recordings, the Catalog division of Concord Music, is pleased to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Here’s Little Richard, with a deluxe reissue of the rock ‘n’ roll icon’s 1957 debut full-length album. Due out November 3rd, the 2-CD set will offer a slew of demos, alternate takes and previously unreleased material from the original sessions, in addition to the remastered classic album, which features some of the artist’s best-loved hits, including “Long Tall Sally,” “Ready Teddy” and “Tutti Frutti,” a song which many consider to mark the birth of rock ‘n’ roll. New liner notes by GRAMMY®-nominated writer, music editor and journalist Chris Morris will round out the package.
In the early ’50s, Little Richard (born Richard Penniman) combined the spirit of church music, the bawdiness of blues and the swing of New Orleans jazz and turned it into something altogether new: rock ‘n’ roll. It wasn’t until the Macon, Georgia native signed to Art Rupe’s Specialty Records at the age of 23, however, that Little Richard truly developed his signature sound and over-the-top persona. His legendary debut album (and the first 12-inch LP for the Los Angeles-based independent label), Here’s Little Richard offers many of his most recognizable songs, and garnered the artist seven hits in the R&B Top Ten chart, and two in the Pop Top Ten.
This expanded edition of the album includes 22 tracks of bonus material, eight of which are previously unreleased. Included is an early take of “Tutti Frutti,” demos of “Slippin’ and Slidin'” and “Miss Ann” and alternate takes of classic tracks like “Rip It Up” and “Reddy Teddy.” In his liner notes, Chris Morris writes, “Like the classic recordings on Here’s Little Richard, these alternate versions reveal the blossoming of an unprecedented and wholly original talent whose first recordings broke down the categorical doors between R&B and pop. One of the first artists to be inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame, Little Richard remains a living legend, and has been honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 1993 GRAMMY® Awards, inductions into the Songwriters Hall of Fame (2003), the NAACP Image Awards’ Hall of Fame (2002) and, most recently, the Blues Hall of Fame in June of 2015. In 2010, Little Richard was listed as number eight in Rolling Stone’s “100 Greatest Artists of All Time,” while also that year, the Library of Congress inducted “Tutti Frutti,” the song that started it all, into its National Recording registry, proclaiming that the song “announced a new era in music.”

Belly Joins Forces With PledgeMusic For First Album In Over 20 Years
90’s alt-rock group Belly are back – hitting the studio for the first time in more than twenty years for their third album, NameTBD. Through their exclusive PledgeMusic pre-order campaign, launching today, the beloved band is inviting fans to take part in their creative process with sneak peeks into the studio, limited-edition merchandise, special experiences, and much more.
Fans can pre-order the album in digital, CD, or vinyl form now on Belly’s campaign page. The leaders in direct-to-fan platforms, PledgeMusic allows artists to get more personal with their fans, offering pledgers behind-the-scenes content and items not available anywhere else.
Reuniting for a limited tour in 2016, Belly fell right back into their groove during rehearsals; planting the seed for a trove of new tunes which they began writing on the spot – two of which they performed on stage for the duration of the tour. Channeling the energy and excitement of their live reunion, the band determined that the only way to move forward was to create more music together. The resulting album, Belly’s third studio project, marks over twenty years since their last official release.
Belly recorded the initial tracks at Stable Sound Studio in Rhode Island, enlisting old friend and Grammy Award-winning producer/engineer Paul Q. Kolderie (Pixies, Radiohead). As they continue building out the album in the studio, the band is inviting fans through PledgeMusic to partake in the creative process; offering unprecedented studio content and the ability to be among the first to hear select recordings.

Belly formed in 1991 after Tanya Donelly left the critically acclaimed Throwing Muses, which she’d founded with her stepsister Kristin Hersh while they were both still in high school. Just prior to leaving the Muses, Tanya co-founded The Breeders as a side project with Kim Deal of The Pixies, but soon realized she needed more space to pursue her own fractured-fairytale alternative-pop-rock song-writing vision.
Tanya recruited brothers Chris and Tom Gorman to play drums and guitar, respectively. The band immediately got to work on Belly’s debut album, Star, recorded in two sessions: in Nashville with engineer Tracy Chisholm; and Liverpool, England, with producer Gil Norton. Just before the release of the album in January 1993, Gail Greenwood joined the band on bass. By turns dreamy, creepy, jaggedly delicate and melodically expansive, Star was propelled by the single “Feed the Tree” to gold-record status in the US, earning two Grammy nominations and eventually selling two million copies worldwide. Belly spent more than a year of nearly nonstop touring for Star, performing throughout the US, UK, Europe, Australia and Japan, with opening bands that included The Cranberries and Radiohead.
In the summer of 1994, Belly began writing and rehearsing for their 1995 sophomore release King, produced by the legendary Glyn Johns. King was a more ‘rock-oriented’ and live-sounding album, reflecting the band’s experience of hard touring that preceded it, as well as Johns’ minimalist production style. Another extensive tour followed the release of King, with dates opening for R.E.M., and other shows supported by the Catherine Wheel.
After Belly unceremoniously disbanded in November of 1995, Tanya went on to pursue a solo career, continuing to perform internationally and, to date, releasing four albums and a stream of digital Eps under her own name. Gail spent three years playing in L7, followed by two years as touring bassist for pop-punk artist Bif Naked and, most recently has been performing with her partner Chil Mott in Benny Sizzler. Chris moved to New York City and opened a studio to pursue commercial and fine-art photography, and published his first children’s book, Indi Surfs, in 2015. Tom briefly played guitar and keyboards with Buffalo Tom, toured with Kristin Hersh in 1999 and eventually moved to New York City to join Chris in the commercial photography business. In 2016 Belly reunited for a highly-anticipated limited tour, which planted the seeds for a trove of new songs and their first studio project in 22 years. NameTBD is slated for release in 2018.

To be eligible for nomination, an individual artist or band must have released its first commercial recording at least 25 years prior to the year of induction. The 2018 Nominees had to release their first official recording no later than 1992.
Nine out of 19 of the nominees are on the ballot for the first time, including: Eurythmics, Dire Straits, Judas Priest, Kate Bush, The Moody Blues, Nina Simone, Radiohead, Rage Against Machine and Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Radiohead and Rage Against the Machine became eligible for nomination for the 2018 Ceremony this year, having released their first official recordings in 1992.
Ballots will be sent to an international voting body of more than 900 artists, historians and members of the music industry. Factors such as an artist’s musical influence on other artists, length and depth of career and the body of work, innovation and superiority in style and technique are taken into consideration.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame will again offer fans the opportunity to officially participate in the induction selection process. Beginning Oct. 5 and continuing through 11:59 p.m. EST on Dec. 5, 2017, fans can visit rockhall.com/vote to cast votes for who they believe to be most deserving of induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The top five artists, as selected by the public, will comprise a “fans’ ballot” that will be tallied along with the other ballots to choose the 2018 inductees. Fans will need to login with a Facebook account or email to vote. Voting is capped at one ballot per day.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2018 Inductees will be announced in December 2017. HBO will once again broadcast the ceremony. Broadcast details will be announced later.
SiriusXM will also carry a radio broadcast of the ceremony in April and carry special broadcasts throughout the year devoted to the Rock Hall’s Inductees—past and present— on Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Radio (Ch. 310).
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2018 Inductions, presented by Klipsch Audio, will be held at Public Auditorium in Cleveland on April 14, 2018. The 2018 Induction in Cleveland will also include a weeklong series of events including an Inductee exhibit opening, free admission day to the Museum and more. Details and ticket on-sale information will also be announced later.
All Inductees are ultimately represented in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, the nonprofit organization that tells the story of rock and roll’s global impact via special exhibits, educational programs and its library and archives.
