Merlin announces a billion dollars paid to independent record labels

0

In a landmark day for independent music, Merlin, the global digital rights agency for the independent label sector, has announced its billionth dollar in distributions.

Encapsulating sentiment from leading music business figures, Darius Van Arman, co-owner of the Secretly Label Group (Bon Iver, Angel Olsen, ANOHNI, Damien Jurado, Mitski, Dinosaur Jr) commented, “Thanks to Merlin, independent music companies can compete with the biggest recording companies. Now that Merlin has paid over a billion dollars to its members, we can proudly say that Merlin is an essential pillar of the music economy, supporting a fair, healthy and diverse marketplace for artists and companies of all sizes.”

Opening for business in May 2008, with a remit to add global efficiencies to the licensing of new generation streaming services, Merlin acts on behalf of more than 20,000 independent record labels and distributors from 53 countries, across five continents, ensuring they can participate in all benefits from the licensing of their content.

The agency has firmly established itself as a market leader, enabling new-generation services to license – via a single global deal – the largest basket of rights outside of the three major labels, and to access music from the world’s most important, unique and successful artists.

Since agreeing its first commercial partnership in September 2008 as launch partner to Spotify, Merlin has now licensed more than 20 digital music services – including Deezer, Google Play, iHeartRadio, SoundCloud, YouTube Red, Pandora, Vevoand KKBOX.

Over the past five years, annual revenues paid to Merlin members have increased eightfold, while administration fees have dropped almost 80%.

Frequently referred to as the “virtual fourth major”, the agency has gained a hard-won reputation for ensuring the unique value of its members’ repertoire is recognised commercially. Notably, in April 2017, Merlin announced a renewed multi-year global licence with Spotify.

The agency’s combined membership commands over 12% of the digital recorded music market, including such globally-recognised label brands as Beggars Group, Secretly Group, Domino, Sub Pop, Epitaph, Anti Records, Redeye Worldwide, !K7, Kobalt Music Recordings, [PIAS], Merge, Warp, INgrooves, Hopeless Records, Armada Music, Mad Decent, Eleven Seven Music, Naxos and Curb Records.

Peter Goddard Writes New Book of Glenn Gould

0

Glenn Gould’s astonishing recordings deliver that unmistakable jolt of genius to each generation newly discovering the great Canadian pianist. With the support of the Glenn Gould Estate, Peter Goddard draws on his own interviews with Gould and on new, and in some cases overlooked, sources to present a freshly revealing portrait of Gould’s unsettled life, his radical decision to quit concertizing, his career as a radio innovator, and his deep response to the Canadian environment. Sci-fi and hi-fi, hockey and Petula Clark, Elvis, jazz, chess, the Beatles, and sex — all these inform this exploration of the pianist’s far-reaching imagination. There is even a touching account of the only piano lesson Gould ever gave.

This is the perfect gift for anyone new to classical music and those already immersed in it, for those with an interest in Canadian music, in Glenn Gould himself, and in what led to The Goldberg Variations, one of the greatest recordings in music history.

Tickets for the Closing Ceremony start at $60 and are available through the Invictus Games Toronto 2017 website.

It is an absolute honour and privilege to perform for them at the Closing Ceremony as a send-off to a week of competition in Toronto.”

The Grammy award-winning artist will join Bryan Adams, Bachman & Turner, Kelly Clarkson and Coeur de pirate on stage at the Closing Ceremony. On September 23, Canadian sensations Alessia Cara, Sarah McLachlan and The Tenors will perform at the Games Opening Ceremony.

The Closing Ceremony will mark the Games’ conclusion after seven days of inspirational competition. The 2017 Invictus Games will feature a dozen adaptive sports in state-of-the-art venues throughout Toronto. Toronto is playing host to more than 550 competitors from 17 nations, including 90 competitors from Canada.

“I invite everyone to attend the Opening and Closing Ceremonies for the Invictus Games Toronto 2017, which are sure to be spectacular,” said the Honourable Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities. “The celebrations surrounding the competitions will be just as memorable for the spectators as the athletes, as they are a golden opportunity to pay tribute to the brave men and women who have shown exceptional determination and perseverance. Let’s support these admirable athletes and their families!”

Both the Opening and Closing Ceremonies will be a rare opportunity for spectators to experience how passion for sport, the lustre of ceremony and national pride intersect, while demonstrating their support for those who are currently serving or have served their country.

“The fact that such an incredible performer like Bruce Springsteen will be here in Toronto to support our wounded warriors shows the impact these Games have,” said Wolfgang Hoffmann, President, Jaguar Land Rover Canada. “It underlines even further our great pride to be involved as the presenting partner.”

“Ontario is delighted to play host to the Invictus Games and the Closing Ceremonies are sure to be an unforgettable experience,” said Kathleen Wynne, Premier of Ontario. “This lineup of incredible talent is sure to give the athletes and volunteers the celebration they deserve after an exciting week of competition. Across Ontario, we are gearing up to welcome guests from around the world for this event. We are immensely proud to showcase our beautiful province to these heroes and their supporters. Selah Sue’s Always Home striking music video created by director Filip Sterckx and director of photography Filip Sterckx, sees the only source of light is a light bulb being swung about on a cord. That’s really nothing, I hear you saying. But by layering multiple frames, this is where it gets really creative, and a smart idea.

Audible Teams up with Cesar Millan to Launch Audible for Dogs

0

Audible.com today announced the release of Audible for Dogs, an audio content destination designed to foster calm, relaxed behavior in dogs. Developed in collaboration with Cesar Millan, Audible for Dogs provides dog owners and caregivers peace of mind when leaving their dogs at home alone, knowing the dog will have the comfort of a human voice. Featuring Cesar Millan’s Guide to Audiobooks for Dogs, an original piece of content written and narrated by Millan—available free at launch—in addition to a curated rotating selection of audiobook titles with personalized introductions from Millan about their canine appeal, Audible for Dogs is available at audible.com/dogs.

“I learned from Cesar that our energy is important to the way a dog responds, so if I’m agitated because I’m feeling guilty about leaving, he’s going to feel that. Leaving Buddy at home with an audiobook to keep him company relieves my guilt and gives me peace of mind.”

Inspired by a 2015 independent academic study showing that listening to audiobooks outperformed music in reducing stress in canines, Audible teamed up with Millan to further examine the benefits of listening to audiobooks for dogs. In subsequent research with 100 dog participants, conducted in partnership with Cesar Millan’s Dog Psychology Center, 76% of dog owners who played audiobooks for their dogs reported an increase in calm, relaxed behavior in their pets over a four-week period. Dogs responded best to narrators of the same gender as their primary owner, played at average volume on an in-home listening device. Moreover, owners who keep their dog enclosed in one room or in a crate while they are away from home observed the same behavior and energy levels in their dogs as did owners whose dogs had free roam of the house or in an enclosed yard.

“Dogs are social animals, so they need to engage with someone and the purpose of Audible for Dogs is to make dogs feel there is someone with them. The person performing the audiobook is actually keeping your dog calm and taking the dog to a resting state, acting as an extension of you,” said Millan. “I’m excited to work with Audible to continue my mission of educating people on how to foster a calm, happy dog the right way.”

“I would always feel guilty about leaving my dog, Buddy, alone, but with Audible for Dogs, I felt like I was leaving him with a friend,” said Leslie, a study participant. “I learned from Cesar that our energy is important to the way a dog responds, so if I’m agitated because I’m feeling guilty about leaving, he’s going to feel that. Leaving Buddy at home with an audiobook to keep him company relieves my guilt and gives me peace of mind.”

“There are dozens of ways in which our customers use Audible—they listen while commuting, running, gardening, cooking, doing house work. We believe we have found another fun and important use case for Audible, addressing anxiety of dogs and their owners when they are separated,” said Audible Chief Content Officer Andy Gaies. “Your dog will never wax poetic about Rosamund Pike’s nuanced performance of Pride and Prejudice, but you will return home to a calmer, happier best friend.”

Each curated title by Millan features a special video introduction from Cesar himself. The titles at launch are: Trevor Noah’s Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood performed by Trevor Noah, Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice performed by Rosamund Pike, W. Bruce Cameron’s A Dog’s Purpose performed by William Dufris, Garth Stein’s The Art of Racing in the Rain performed by Christopher Evan Welch, Maria Goodavage’s Soldier Dogs: The Untold Story of America’s Canine Heroes performed by Nicole Vilencia, and Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows performed by Shelly Frasier.

Millan is also emphasizing the benefits of audiobooks to dogs recently adopted from animal shelters. Audible for Dogs includes an additional Millan audio original, Cesar Millan’s Guide to Bringing Home a Shelter Dog, also available as a free download. Through 2017, Audible will donate a dime per download of Cesar Millan’s Guide to Bringing Home a Shelter Dog to North Shore Animal League America, the world’s largest no-kill rescue and adoption organization, up to a total donation of $250,000.

Millan, widely known for his internationally acclaimed hit series, “Cesar Millan’s Dog Nation,” and as host of both “Cesar 911” and Emmy-nominated “Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan,” has worked with rescue and animal welfare organizations around the world and has been recognized for his commitment to the betterment of animals and their relationships with people.

With a 30-day membership trial at Audible, new listeners can enjoy one free audiobook, including any one of Cesar Millan’s picks, specially curated for Audible for Dogs.

Among the acclaimed performers who have narrated works of literature for Audible are Sean Penn, Nick Offerman, Zachary Quinto, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Lily Collins, Emma Thompson, James Franco, and Jesse Eisenberg. Audible Studios has won a Grammy Award, for its production of Janis Ian’s memoir Society’s Child, and has also been recognized with the Audie Award for Audiobook of the Year, most recently for Colin Firth’s performance of Graham Greene’s The End of the Affair. Audible invented and commercialized the first digital audio player in 1997, and has since been at the forefront of the explosively growing audiobook download segment. In 2016, Audible members downloaded an average of 17 books over the course of the year. More than half of new Audible members are first-time audiobook buyers.

Did You Know Stevie Wonder Owns A Radio Station?

0

Some say radio today is too homogenized, too preprogrammed by the conglomerates that own the stations. I am not here to weigh in on that debate. However, the large networks of corporate stations are not the only players left. All across the country there are still independent station owners maintaining a strong and vital link to their communities in the form of being not just a source of entertainment but also the eyes, ears and voice of their listeners. They are small-business men and women trying to be of service to their local markets while also dealing with the obstacles of running a radio station.

I know these people very well, because I am one of them.

I have owned station KJLH for almost 40 years. When I bought the station, it had been started by a pioneering African-American -station owner in 1965, John Lamar Hill, and it was the first black-owned station west of the Mississippi. Upon my purchasing the station from Mr. Hill, we agreed that it was vital to both he and I that the integrity of KJLH be maintained as a small independent business. It is a great source of pride that we continue to be licensed to the city of Compton, Calif., serving the community and the greater Los Angeles area by bringing news, information, contemporary and vintage artists to the attention of our audience while also being there at times when our community is in need. We strive to be a meaningful member of our community and offer things that nationwide programmers can’t. We are a home to our listeners, a place they find comfort and refuge from the mass market. – Steve Wonder, in Billboard
