For the past year, Third Man Records has been working closely with Touch and Go Records and the surviving members of Laughing Hyenas to craft deluxe vinyl reissues of the entire Laughing Hyenas’ catalog. The seminal Michigan group’s releases have been lovingly re-mastered for vinyl and cut by Bob Weston at Chicago Mastering. Watch a teaser video for the reissue series below…
Meet John Brannon and Larissa (Stolarchuk) Strickland, front people of Negative Approachand L-Seven respectively. John and Larissa were the surrogate “Den Parents” of the Detroit punk rock and hardcore family in the early 80’s. They hosted many legendary shows at their place, known across the country as “The Clubhouse” located on the same block as TMR Cass Corridor. Both bands also shared the stage with virtually every touring punk and hardcore band that would dare to set foot in Detroit at The Freezer, The Clubhouse, Bookie’s, Clutch Cargos and The Graystone and anywhere else that would put on a show. One such show, L-Seven opened for Australian by way of England newcomers The Birthday Party featuring a young Nick Cave. It has been said that this show is the show that planted the (Bad) seed in John and Larissa’s heads, a (Bad) seed that would go on and grow into the criminally underrated but highly influential LAUGHING HYENAS.
The original line up of John (on vocals) and Larissa (switching to guitar), with the addition of the pocket-locked rhythm section of Kevin (Monroe) Strickland (bass) and Jim Kimball (drums) recorded Merry-Go-Round, You Can’t Pray A Lie and Life of Crime. These seminal 12″s and the live shows that this line up played around these releases are among the scariest music the world has ever heard or seen. Seriously, life changing stuff. Laughing Hyenas WERE the underground. Brannon had (STILL has) a howling shriek and stage presence unlike any other frontman in history, with the stare of a perverted street evangelist and voice full of pain like gargling shards of glass. Larissa was a guitar strangler in a very true sense. Highly original and influential, she wrangled possessed sounds out of that instrument that redefined what we think of as a “blues riff”. She made it scary and real. The rhythm section was downright frightening. Lock tight hillbilly refugees from the hardcore scene.
The HYENAS stormed across the country and the world and made instant musically sympathetic pals with other fledgling bands / boundary pushers like Sonic Youth, Scream, Mudhoney, Minutemen, Husker Du, Pussy Galore, Die Kreuzen and Fugazi. A peer group that suited them quite well.
After the departure of Kevin and Jim to form Mule, John and Larissa added Kevin Reis on Bass and Founding Necros Drummer Todd Swalla for the every bit as fierce Crawl ep. Their final LP, Hard Times, saw one more line up change. Kevin Reis left and one time Gerbil and Necros Ron Sakowski stepped in.
All the Laughing Hyenas records were originally released (and continue to be available digitally) on Chicago-via-Detroit label Touch and Go Records (our partner on these vinyl re-issues). Touch and Go’s catalog also includes the early ‘80s Negative Approach and L-Seven records. Third Man has been working very closely with Corey Rusk and Touch and Go Records as well as the surviving members of the band to make sure that these reissues get the attention they deserve. Each record will include unseen photos and images of “Damn, that would have been a sick show!” flyers as well as testimonials/thoughts/stories/liners by Thurston Moore, Butch Vig, Brian Turner, Ben Swank, Aaron Dilloway, Allyson Baker to name just a few.
Jimmy Page is heading back into Led Zeppelin’s vaults for the band’s 50th anniversary next year, and he’s also confirmed there’s unreleased music soon to be out.
In a new 50-minute video for the Academy of Achievement, Page said, “There’ll be Led Zeppelin product coming out, for sure, that people haven’t heard, because I’m working on that. Next year will be the 50th year, so there’s all manner of surprises coming out.”
Every con has its pros. The upcoming Ocean’s reboot starring Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, with Rihanna and Helena Bonham Carter just dropped and this is going to be huge.
On February 16, Craft Recordings will release a deluxe edition of one of the most iconic and enduring records in jazz. Celebrating its 60th Anniversary in 2017, Way Out West, alongside Saxophone Colossus, cemented Sonny Rollins’ place as one of the top tenor saxophonists of all-time. This meticulously compiled package pays appropriate tribute to the importance of the landmark recording with an audiophile-quality pressing of the original album and a second LP of bonus material featuring rare and previously unreleased tracks from the legendary session. Both records are pressed at Quality Record Pressings on 180-gram vinyl. Grammy® Award-winning writer Neil Tesser contributes liner notes, which include excerpts from a recent interview he conducted with Rollins especially for this release. Rare photos by famed jazz photographer William Claxton round out the collection, which comes housed in a handsome hinged box.
Over his long and distinguished career, Sonny Rollins has made many dozens of albums. Among those recorded during the 50’s — Prestige’s Saxophone Colossus, Blue Note’s A Night at the Village Vanguard, Riverside’s The Sound of Sonny, and especially Way Out West, originally recorded for the Contemporary label — qualify as all-time Rollins classics. The session for Way Out West, Rollins’s first ever in California, was called for at 3 a.m. to accommodate everyone’s busy schedules and included bassist Ray Brown and drummer Shelly Manne. Sonny, who could never be accused of overstatement, announced after four hours of recording: “I’m hot now.” What transpired on the date was nothing less than magic with Brown and Manne effortlessly supporting Rollins and pushing him to new peaks on “I’m an Old Cowhand (From the Rio Grande),” “Way out West,” “There Is No Greater Love,” and “Come, Gone,” a cookin’ take on the timeless ballad “After You’ve Gone.” This deluxe edition celebrates this landmark album in Rollins’ career with a full second LP of rare and previously unreleased bonus material, deluxe packaging, new liner notes by Grammy-winning writer Neil Tesser, and rare photos by famed jazz photographer William Claxton.
Rollins has since gone on to win numerous awards, including his first performance Grammy for This Is What I Do (2000), and his second for 2004’s Without a Song (The 9/11 Concert), in the Best Jazz Instrumental Solo category (for “Why Was I Born”). In addition, Sonny received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences in 2004. His continued advocacy for jazz music has earned him recognition of the highest order throughout his exemplary career including, induction into the Academy of Achievement (2006), the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art, First Class (2009), membership in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2010), the Edward MacDowell Medal (2010), and the Medal of Arts (2011), which was bestowed upon him by President Barack Obama in a White House ceremony. Rollins accepted the award, the nation’s highest honor for artistic excellence, “on behalf of the gods of our music.”

Grandiosa is the most popular brand of frozen pizza in Norway: per Wikipedia, they sell twenty-four million pizzas each year even though the population of Norway is just over 5 million. With offerings like a “Hot Nacho” variety, complete with little baby tortilla chips on top, it’s little wonder why. (By comparison, the most popular brand in the US makes around 90 million pizzas for a population of 325 million.) Grandiosa is so popular that two of their advertising jingles reached #1 on the Norwegian pop charts: “Respekt for Grandiosa” hit in March, 2006 for 2 full months, and “Full Pakke” hit #1 in March, 2007.

“Throughout the course of my career, I have had the good fortune to live and work from coast to coast with many of the pioneers that built the industry in Canada. It has been a wild ride and I have met so many inspiring, passionate and creative people. I am incredibly honoured to be invited into the Canadian Music and Broadcast Hall of Fame, the members inducted before me have been my mentors and role models.

Prior to joining Ticketmaster, Tarlton headed up Live Entertainment Division for Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE) as Vice President for 13 years.
Patti-Anne’s curiosity in the music industry came at a very young age as her Uncle, Donald Tarlton, was one of the most prominent record label owners in Canadian music history. Donald Tarlton owned Aquarius Records, which represented April Wine, Sum 41, and Corey Hart. Patti-Anne got her start in operations as a concert promoter and over the next 14 years, she promoted concerts for Perryscope Concerts, DKD Concerts and House of Blues Concerts.
Among Patti-Anne’s accolades, she was recognized as one of Billboard Magazine’s ‘Women in Music 2017: The Most Powerful Executives in the Industry, received the Women of Influence Award from Venues Today, won Coach of the Year from Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, and was nominated for Facility Executive of the Year twice for Pollstar. I do know that we have a network of really talented women across the country though there are not enough women on civic or government advisory boards,” Tarlton says. “I do feel like I have a responsibility to push women along as well as well as motivate and inspire. If I take lessons from my own life, it is about putting yourself out there. I do not think twice about delivering myself in a conversation and pushing something forward without the one to one.”

On this Wednesday, December 20, you can own a piece of American punk history. We at Reverb have partnered with Green Day co-founder and frontman, Billie Joe Armstrong, to launch the Official Reverb Green Day Garage Sale. The shop will feature a substantial cache of gear that Armstrong has collected over the years, from guitars and amps to pro-audio equipment. You can sign up here to be first to receive information.
As a user of Reverb for both his personal collection and Oakland-based guitar store, Broken Guitars, Armstrong told us how passionate he is about gear continuing to collect stories as it changes hands.
“Used guitars,” Billie Joe says, “in particular, come with a history to them. I love the character you can see looking at a fretboard that’s been used—you can see where someone played it in clubs, in barns, in churches. We had a guitar come through our store, and you could just see the smoke from the clubs it was played in. It was beautiful. I hope the gear from the Green Day Reverb shop goes to someone that plays it.”
Luckily, the Green Day Garage Sale is packed to the brim with all kinds of new and vintage specimens to choose from.
Known for his love of Gibson Les Paul Juniors, Armstrong has picked three from his impressive collection to include in the sale. “When Green Day was on tour, I was always looking for Les Paul Juniors at local guitar shops, and I started to accumulate a collection. At one point, we’d walk in, open the door, and the guy behind the counter would say ‘Les Paul Junior, right?’ And I’d say ‘Yes, sir.’”
Armstrong is also parting with a 1970s Martin D-41 used on “21 Guns” and several other songs from 21st Century Breakdown, and one of three Les Paul Specials that were refinished for him by Jay Black. One of the Specials is currently on display at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and Armstrong continues to play the third on stage. The LP Special up for sale in Armstrong’s Reverb shop is a white 1960 model that he played during Green Day’s American Idiot tour in 2004.
Speaking of American Idiot, also up for sale is the Victoria tweed amp (affectionately known as “Little Vicky”) that Armstrong used to record the unmistakable intro to the album’s title track. “It has this big, nasty sound—I recorded it on everything,” Armstrong told us about Little Vicky. “Why am I selling this thing again?”
In addition to Little Vicky, the Official Reverb Green Day Garage Sale will be packed with:
