Here’s Why Studying at Music College Helps Your Education

By Mitch Rice

It is no secret that studying music at college can be incredibly rewarding and beneficial.

From developing cognitive skills to providing an emotional outlet, music college offers a plethora of positive outcomes for students.

Whether you are a classical musician or just a casual listener, there are many reasons why Music College in New York can help enhance your education. Let’s look at several of the most important ways studying music at college can help improve learning.

●    Music Helps Develop Cognitive Skills

Playing and reading sheet music requires intense focus and concentration to master the skill. This helps students develop improved memory and recall skills, which can also apply to other educational areas. Additionally, playing an instrument requires complex problem-solving skills to identify the right notes and chords for each piece of music, helping students become more adept at problem-solving in other areas.

●    Music Helps Older Adults With Their Mind, Body, and Emotions

The benefits of an education at Music College in New York extend far beyond entertainment and artistic expression, particularly for older adults. Scientific evidence highlights the positive impact that engaging in music education has on cognitive, emotional, and physical health. For instance, participation in music courses and ensembles at a university setting can help enhance memory, concentration, and multitasking abilities among senior students.

Alongside fostering intellectual growth, delving into music fosters emotional well-being by reducing stress levels, mitigating the risk of depression, and promoting social interactions with fellow learners. Even further, playing an instrument or singing contributes to improved dexterity and motor skills, which are essential for maintaining overall physical health as we age.

●    Music Provides A Creative & Emotional Outlet

Playing an instrument or singing allows students to express their emotions without words. Studies have shown that playing musical instruments helps release endorphins—the “happy hormone”—into the body, leading to improved moods and decreased stress levels while learning. In addition, music becomes even more powerful when performed in front of others, allowing the performer to share their emotions with listeners uniquely.

●    Music Enhances Auditory Processing

Accurately processing sound waves is essential for musicianship, as it allows them to distinguish between different types of sounds and tones within each piece of music. In addition, this auditory processing skill improves comprehension when reading or listening to lectures in other fields.

At a Music College in New York, musicians learn how different harmonies interact. This understanding may carry into other areas like comprehension of complex concepts, such as science or mathematics, more quickly than those with no musical background.

●    Music Improves Analytical Skills

The intricate relationship between music and analytical skills has been extensively studied. Research has consistently demonstrated the cognitive benefits of engaging with music, whether listening, playing an instrument, or composing melodies. Music stimulates various neural pathways and processing centers, improving information retention, pattern identification, and complex problem-solving.

This remarkable effect draws attention to the power of music as a tool for intellectual growth. Moreover, it encourages us to consider the broader educational implications, workplace productivity, and overall mental well-being.

Conclusion: Contact A University Music Program Today

Studying music at a Music College in New York has countless benefits beyond just learning to play an instrument. By focusing on cognitive development, emotional expression, auditory processing, and problem-solving skills through music study, students become well-equipped with tools to help them inside and outside the classroom. So if you’re looking for ways to enhance your education, look no further than enrolling in a college music program.

Tears For Fears Announce The Hurting 40th Anniversary Expanded Album

The Hurting, the debut studio album by Tears for Fears, celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. To celebrate, it will be reissued as an Abbey Road Half-Speed Mastered vinyl and as a newly created Dolby Atmos mix by renowned artist and mixer Steven Wilson. The Dolby Atmos mix, along with a 5.1 mix, an instrumental mix, the original album master, and two previously unheard tracks, will also be released as a limited edition standalone blu-ray disc exclusively via superdeluxedition.com

Initially released on March 7th, 1983, The Hurting featured three classic top-five hit singles: “Mad World,” “Change,” and “Pale Shelter.” The album peaked at No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart in its second week of release and was certified Gold by the BPI within three weeks, staying in the charts for over a year and reaching Platinum status in early 1985. The album also entered the Top 40 in several countries, including Canada, Germany, and Australia. The Hurting was an incredibly influential album in America, and its influence can be felt in the work of The Weeknd, Nine Inch Nails, Arcade Fire, Smashing Pumpkins, and the massive hit version of “Mad World” by Michael Andrews & Gary Jules from the cult movie Donnie Darko.

The Hurting, written solely by band member Roland Orzabal is a loose concept album focusing on themes of childhood psychological trauma and Arthur Janov’s Primal Scream therapy, the theories behind which gave the band their name. Despite its dark subject matter, the album was a huge commercial success and continues to resonate with younger audiences.

Speaking last year, Tears For Fears co-founder Curt Smith remarked, “We only noticed it in the last couple of years when we played Bonnaroo, which is ostensibly a far younger festival. We expected maybe a thousand people if we were lucky, and it was stretched past the tent overhang and went all the way back. I’m looking at the front of the audience, and they’re all far younger than me, and they’re all singing all the lyrics to every song from The Hurting. It was shocking to me. When you look at it retrospectively, it makes sense because the album was written when we were that age. Those lyrics resonate with a younger audience. But that was when I noticed a shift when we started playing festivals and noticed there was a younger audience we were gaining in America.”

Musically the album was informed by Roland & Curt’s shared love of Remain In Light by Talking Heads, David Bowie’s Scary Monsters And Super Creeps, David Byrne and Brian Eno’s My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts, and especially Peter Gabriel’s untitled third album aka Melt.

Roland Orzabal “It’s a very consistent album with its own distinct personality. I’m not sure if we’ve made a more emotional record since, but I’d like to think we’ve hit higher musical peaks.”

The new Half-Speed Remaster of The Hurting was done by respected audio engineer Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios using a half-speed mastering technique that produces a superior vinyl cut. The Dolby Atmos mix, which remixes the album into spatial, three-dimensional audio, has been created by the artist Steven Wilson who has previously remixed Tears For Fears Songs From The Big Chair, The Seeds Of Love, and The Tipping Point into spatial audio formats.

As well as streaming, the Dolby Atmos mix will be available as a standalone blu-ray disc featuring Wilson’s Atmos Mix, his 5.1 mix, and his stereo instrumental mix as well the original 1985 stereo master and two recently rediscovered unreleased versions of “Mad World” & ‘Watch Me Bleed’ produced by Mike Howlett.

New Order’s “Blue Monday” Celebrates 40th Anniversary

The iconic 12” single Blue Monday celebrates its 40th Anniversary on 7th March 2023. Written and produced by New Order and released on the legendary label Factory, the seminal track has continued to enthrall fans and influence generations of musicians and creatives since release in 1983.

Blue Monday reached the Top 10 in the UK charts, spent a total of 38 weeks in the Top 75 and is the biggest-selling 12” single of all time with worldwide sales of +3 Million.  Designed by Peter Saville the unique cover sleeve, resembling a 5 ¼ floppy disk with coloured code strip which when deciphered reads the artist, track and label information, became an instant classic and equally revered as the music itself.

In addition to the huge commercial success on release, the track has been sampled, covered and remixed by many of the worlds biggest stars including Rihanna on Shut Up And Drive, Kylie ‘Cant Get Blue Monday Out Of My Head’, Quincy Jones ‘Blue Monday 88’’ and even inspired fashion designer Raf Simons’ A/W 2019 collection, achieving an almost unparalleled status in contemporary culture.

Blue Monday has also soundtracked a multitude of high profile film releases, video games and advertising campaigns in recent years, including House Of Gucci, Ready Player One, Atomic Blonde, Wonder Woman 1984, the Call of Duty game series and Yves Saint Laurent, in the process introducing it to whole new audience forty years after it’s original release.

To celebrate the 40th Anniversary, New Order are releasing a range of merchandise available from 7th March, exclusively via their online store here.

From the ashes of legendary band Joy Division, New Order triumphed over tragedy to emerge as one of the most influential and acclaimed bands of all time.

After Ian Curtis tragically took his own life, Bernard Sumner (keyboardist and guitarist), Peter Hook (bassist) and Stephen Morris (drummer) re-formed the same year as New Order, with the addition of Gillian Gilbert (keyboardist and guitarist) and Sumner taking over as vocalist.

Their debut Movement (1981) was over shadowed by the sound of Joy Division; going forward the band combined post-punk with influences from New York’s club scene, the result was Power, Corruption & Lies (1983). 1983 also saw the release of “Blue Monday” which became the best-selling 12-inch single of all time, selling over 3 million copies worldwide.

New Order then released the albums Low-Life (1985), Brotherhood (1986), Substance (1987) and Technique (1989). Between several brief hiatuses and line-up alterations, Republic (1993), Get Ready (2001) and Waiting for the Sirens’ Call (2005) came out, before Peter Hook’s departure in 2007.

Phil Cunningham joined the band in 2001, followed by Tom Chapman as bass player in 2011

The band released their critically acclaimed tenth studio album Music Complete in 2015 featuring guest vocals from Iggy Pop, Brandon Flowers and Elly Jackson of La Roux.

Never resting on their legacy, New Order continue to perform live around the world, playing some of the biggest shows of their career to date, headlining Manchester’s Heaton Park and London’s O2 in 2021 and a US arena tour with Pet Shop Boys in Autumn 2022.

Lionel Richie And Earth, Wind & Fire Announce ‘Sing A Song All Night Long’ Tour

Today, legendary singer, songwriter and producer Lionel Richie announced his 2023 Sing A Song All Night Long tour with very special guests and one of the best-selling bands of all time, Earth, Wind & Fire. Produced by Live Nation, the 20-city arena tour kicks off Friday, August 4th at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, with stops across North America in Chicago, Toronto, New York, and more before wrapping up on Friday, September 15th at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles.

2022 was a pivotal year for Lionel Richie, who has now sold over 125 million albums, as he was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, won the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song by the Library Congress and was honored with the Icon Award at the American Music Awards. With over 100 million albums sold worldwide and an impressive nine GRAMMY® Awards, Earth, Wind & Fire has cemented their lasting impact on popular music as they continue to inspire new audiences and thrill those who have been with them from the beginning. These two iconic artists have now sold a combined quarter billion albums worldwide.

Earth, Wind & Fire are a music institution. In 1969, music legend Maurice White birthed the music force named after the elements from his very own astrological charts. With soul as deep as the plant, Earth, Wind & Fire charted a history that will live on forever. They’ve scored eight number one hits and have sold more than 100 million albums worldwide. They’ve released 23 albums; eight of those albums went Double Platinum and hit the Top 10, making them one of the best-selling artists of all time. They’ve won an impressive nine GRAMMY® Awards including one for Lifetime Achievement (2012). In 2000, Earth, Wind & Fire was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, cementing their lasting impact on popular music and, in 2019, their contributions to arts and culture was acknowledged in Washington DC with the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors.

The music of Earth, Wind & Fire is more alive than ever as they continue to inspire new audiences and thrill those who have been with them from the beginning. Like the elements in their name, Earth, Wind & Fire’s music has withstood ever-changing trends in the world and shows no sign of vanishing as they continue to create joy and uplifting music that will forever reach a sacred universal atmosphere. From the funky and infectious “Let’s Groove” to the timeless dance classic “September” to the heartfelt “Reasons,” Earth, Wind & Fire’s catalog of hits has become the soundtrack to many lives; now, then and forever.
