The Clash’s Isolated Guitars For “London Calling”

0

The opening song to one of the greatest albums of all time from the only band that mattered. The Clash’s London Calling was written by Joe Strummer and Mick Jones, and the title alludes to the BBC World Service’s station identification: “This is London calling …”, which was used during World War II, often in broadcasts to occupied countries.

According to Bobby Owsinski, the famous opening riff is actually a combination of two guitars – one is Joe Strummer’s rhythm that’s playing the Em to Cm sus, and the other is Mick Jones straight Em against it. There’s also a E pedal note that gets louder as the intro goes along. And as he notes, you can really hear the backwards guitar solo pretty well.

Seattle’s Soulful Documentary Series Highlights Jimi Hendrix and Bruce Lee

0

Seattle has a unique relationship to its natural surroundings. This short explores the process of harnessing the purest parts of Seattle and follows them on a journey from farm to counter, where a ferry ride plays an integral role in bringing delicious experiences to the people of Seattle.

Did you know the Sasquatch is the unofficial mascot of Seattle? Watch as her excellent sense of smell guides her on a tour of all the city has to offer, from breweries and coffee roasters to shorelines, forests and wildlife, in this animated short.

In this short, we move from the raw beauty of towering trees to the myriad ways Seattle dwellers and visitors alike can experience the transformed forest with their own hands. While the city’s skyline is iconic, the forests were Seattle’s first skyscrapers and are the featured players in this quiet portrait of a green city.

Bruce Lee’s relationship with Seattle inspires this short: a fictionalized account of a brief moment in his life when he felt isolated, frustrated and restless. But the sight of the of Seattle’s skyline from his boat on the Puget Sound reminds him how to find his balance, and allows his mind to once again be as fluid as water.

This short is the unauthorized, heavily abridged, biographical, visual and supersonic moment about the fact that Johnny Allen Hendrix (aka Jimi Hendrix) knew how to skydive. Set in Seattle where Jimi was born and raised, the film wonders aloud about what this skill meant for the life he went on to lead. Why did he retreat to the sky so quickly before all of us were ready for him to go? Directed by Terence Nance.

A new “intelligent turntable” that allows users to play vinyl from their smartphone is in the works.

According to its page on the Coming Soon Tech website, the LOVE turntable “reads vinyl with a stylus, connects to Bluetooth & Wi-Fi, and is controlled by your smartphone”. It promises “the intimacy of vinyl with modern-day convenience”.

The LOVE app allows you to play, skip tracks, repeat tracks, select different rpm speeds, turn the volume up and down, & display the album cover.

A ‘how it works’ section on the site explains: “Once LOVE is synced with your audio device, put any size vinyl on one of the two complimentary 7″ record bases. LOVE then scans the vinyl to determine its size and number of tracks. If you’d like to start your listening experience with track 3, simply Press LOVE’s top shell three times or select the track through the app. From there, sit back, relax, and enjoy your record.”

LOVE connects to any Bluetooth audio device and Wi-Fi multiroom systems. This includes speakers, headphones, & stereo systems. If your speaker system isn’t Bluetooth enabled, LOVE comes with a 3.5mm or RCA Bluetooth adapter.

The LOVE turntable isn’t available to buy yet, but intrigued tech fans can sign up here to be notified when it launches, and receive a 50% discount on the eventual purchase price.

Everything’s Zen As Gavin Rossdale and Bush Announce 2017 North American Tour And New Album

0

Multi-platinum rock band BUSH have announced their first tour dates of 2017, beginning May 4th in Dallas, TX. The shows, which include rescheduled dates in Seattle and Vegas, are announced as the multi-platinum-selling quartet (lead vocalist Gavin Rossdale, guitarist Chris Traynor, bassist Corey Britz and drummer Robin Goodridge) puts the finishing touches on the follow-up to 2014’s Man on the Run.

Rossdale and crew recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of landmark album Razorblade Suitcase with a digital reissue featuring four rare bonus tracks, one of which — “Sleeper”—was previously unreleased. Consequence of Sound premiered the song and posted new liner notes from the album’s producer, Steve Albini, which you can read HERE. Wrote Albini, “I am as proud of their friendship as I am of any work I did for them. They made the music they did because they loved it and they got popular because they worked their asses off, and eventually other people like it, too. You cannot ask any more of an artist.”

Man on the Run, which BUSH recorded with Grammy winning producer Nick Raskulinecz (Mastodon, Deftones, Foo Fighters) and which featured the single, “The Only Way Out,” was the follow-up to 2011’s The Sea of Memories, which was BUSH’s first release in 10 years. That album saw them return to the top of the charts in grand style, with lead single “The Sound of Winter” making rock radio history as the first self-released song ever to hit No. 1 at Alternative Rock Radio (where it stayed for six consecutive weeks).

Over the course of their career, BUSH has sold close to 20 million records in the U.S. and Canada alone. They’ve also compiled an amazing string of 18 consecutive Top 40 hit singles on the Modern Rock and Mainstream Rock charts. Eleven of those hit the Top 5, six of which shot to No. 1: “Comedown,” “Glycerine,” “Machinehead,” “Swallowed,” “The Chemicals Between Us” and “The Sound of Winter.” Rossdale is currently serving as a coach on the hit television series, “The Voice UK,” and recently signed a publishing deal with Roc Nation.

Wilco Fires Back At Internet Commenters Attacking The Band

0

In a post on Wilco’s Facebook page, Jeff Tweedy addresses commenters who have attacked the band for protesting President Donald Trump.

Dear fellow citizens who are being mean in our comments section,
I don’t know you so it’s hard for me to accurately guess how much time you spend on your devices commenting on and unfollowing “celebrities” and moderately well known music figures. My assumption is that it’s more than even you would care to admit. Since I don’t know you it’s extremely difficult for me to weigh the degree to which I should take you seriously. Still, it’s easier to infer things about you than it is to take on board your criticism of me. For example: When you say something about Bill Clinton it makes me realize that you’re old (or at least as old as I am) but it means nothing to me because I don’t care for the man and I don’t know where anyone would get the idea that I do.
Anyway, it occurred to me that being in the position I’m in – where people devote their time and energy to negatively comment and insult their Formerly Approved of Musician™ (F.A.M. – I think that’s going to really take off as a phrase in these upcoming years) for lending his support to things he and his band mates and all of our families have feelings about – I should take advantage of the opportunity to occupy your time and energy as often as possible to infiltrate your minds. Not because I have much hope of changing your opinions (again, I don’t know you, so I’m not sure what your bag is) but I mean, MAYBE our sincerity about the things that concern us can inspire some deeper investigation into those concerns. I suppose that’s why we share our opinions on Facebook, social media, etc., but I think it’s more often than not just a helpful reminder to like-minded people (our bubble?) not to despair and to try to remain hopeful. It’s a place for us to model some coping strategies that have made us feel better as citizens and to remind people to participate.
Speaking of bubbles…sure, we live in a bubble. I’d love for more of you to share our bubble though! It’s awesome! In our bubble I know cops and rappers and grocery store cashiers and artists and garbage collectors…so many decent people that don’t really care that much about people being different than they are. If you can trust a reality TV star billionaire when he says, “believe me,” surely you can believe me when I say you’re welcome in my bubble. I grew up in what I think might be something like your bubble. You should at least try this one! Come on in!
Or….maybe you just get off on getting people angry and it helps you blow off a little steam and feel a tiny bit more in control of your life. Good for you. Or…maybe you’re serious about all the hurtful things you’ve been saying. If you ARE serious, I would like to welcome you back to our little corner of the web to spit and foam anytime you like. I can take it. I’m not afraid of you. There are more of us here and there always will be. So please come back! We’ll keep laying out dishes of warm outrage for you to lap up in the form of our vision of a better world, causes we believe in, actions we’re taking, etc., and in turn we’ll have peace of mind in knowing that you aren’t out in the world acting on the anger so evident in your hastily typed and misspelled defenses of a man who has been elevated to a position of immense power but in whom I’ve yet to see any evidence of virtue. You’ll be here where we want you and the most vulnerable among us will have one less danger to encounter.
With love (seriously),
Jeff Tweedy

Randy Lennox to receive 2017 Walt Grealis Special Achievement Award At 2017 JUNOs

0

The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) today announced that music industry veteran executive Randy Lennox will be awarded the 2017 Walt Grealis Special Achievement Award for his longstanding commitment to Canadian Music.

The Walt Grealis Special Achievement Award recognizes industry leaders who have vastly contributed to the growth and development of the Canadian music industry. Named after famed Canadian publisher and trailblazer Walt Grealis, this year’s award will be presented to Lennox at the 46th Annual JUNO Gala Dinner & Awards presented by SOCAN on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at the Shaw Centre in Ottawa, Ontario.

With a career spanning more than 30 years, Lennox has been a driving force in Canada’s music scene. As President and CEO of Universal Music Canada, he helped to sign or elevate the careers of some the country’s biggest recording artists including Hedley, Shawn Mendes, Drake, Justin Bieber, Shania Twain, The Tragically Hip, and The Weeknd, among many others. Lennox continues his commitment to Canadian artists in his current role as President of Content and Broadcasting at Bell Media.

“Randy Lennox’s business savvy and ability to recognize talent has made him a force to be reckoned with in the music industry,” said Allan Reid, President & CEO, CARAS/The JUNO Awards and MusiCounts. “Not only has he been an innovator but his passion for providing quality entertainment has helped elevate the careers of some of Canada’s premier artists. We could not be happier to name Randy as the Walt Grealis Special Achievement Award recipient this year and to celebrate his incredible career.”

“I am humbled by this tremendous honour,” said Lennox. “Thank you to CARAS and all of the talented people I’ve worked with over the years, including the incredible artists that help define our culture and make our country proud. I look forward to continuing to help our stars shine brighter than ever, here and around the world.”

Lennox began his music career at Universal Music Canada, working in various positions until becoming President in 1998 when the company merged with Polygram Canada, and then became CEO in 2001. With Lennox at the helm, Universal Music Canada was named Canadian Music Week’s Music Company of the Year for 15 consecutive years.

In 2015, Lennox took on the role of President of Broadcasting and Content for Canada’s most successful content creation company, Bell Media. There, he leads Bell Media’s CTV and English-language specialty channels and oversees all of the company’s independent and in-house productions in English Canada. Lennox is also responsible for the recent launch of Bell Media’s live theatre division, and extends his music industry commitment via his introduction of the iHeartRadio brand, including live music events.

Complementing his longstanding commitment to music, Lennox is a key contributor to the production of THE JUNO AWARDS and the IHEARTRADIO MUCH MUSIC VIDEO AWARDS, and acts as an executive producer for Canada’s Walk of Fame. Lennox is also on the board of directors of CARAS and Canada’s Walk of Fame, and sits on the board of governors for Massey Hall, Roy Thomson Hall and the culture advisory board for Ontario.

Lennox has been recognized by Macleans and Toronto Life for his talent and production experience as one of the Top 50 most influential people in Canada and Toronto, respectively. In 2010, after being awarded the Music Industry Executive of the Year seven times, he was inducted into the Canadian Music and Broadcast Industry Hall of Fame. In 2014, Lennox was announced as International Label Executive of the Year by the Worldwide Radio Summit.

Lennox has also initiated and raised millions of dollars for the music industry and related charities. He co-produced “Wavin’ Flag,” a single which raised over two million dollars for disaster relief efforts in Haiti and won the 2011 JUNO Award for Single of the Year. His ongoing artist involvement also saw Lennox credited as executive producer of CTV’s Olympic Winter Games anthem “I Believe.” Lennox also acts as founding director for the Smilezone Foundation, a Canadian charity that aims to improve the lives of children facing illness, disabilities and physical and emotional obstacles.
