Breakup parties – they’re the new going out!

0

There was a time when going through a breakup meant lying on your bed surrounded by chocolate and tissues, drinking wine and watching chick-flicks – well, that time has passed. In the 21st century, women are more likely to go out and have fun than wallow in self-pity, and the divorce party is the ultimate expression of that.

The terms divorce party and breakup party first came into circulation about ten years ago, when divorce rates were high and girl power was at its peak.

While some divorce or breakup parties are held jointly by both parties and intended to bring friends and family together to avoid any rifts or damaged relationships, most are held and attended by women.

They often involve elements reminiscent of a hen party and aim to celebrate newfound singledom, rather than mourning the loss of a romantic relationship – booking agencies often field enquiries about hiring upbeat, empowering acts to perform at such events.

It’s not for everyone, sure, but if you’re planning a divorce party we’ve got a suggestion to make sure it goes with a bang – instead of just playing Gloria Gaynor’s I Will Survive, why not book the woman herself?

If you’re interested in a celebrity appearance from one of pop’s true legends at your divorce party or breakup party, contact Gloria Gaynor’s agency to find out more about booking her.

David Bowie’s Isolated Vocals For “Fame”

David Bowie’s Fame was written by Bowie, Carlos Alomar and John Lennon, and it was a hit in North America, becoming Bowie’s first number 1 single in the Canadian Singles Chart as well as the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. The song was one of the most successful singles of the year, ranking at number 7 on the Billboard Year-End Hot 100. The song is one of four of Bowie’s songs to be included in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.

Bowie would later describe the song as “nasty, angry”, and fully admitted that it was written “with a degree of malice” aimed at the Mainman management group with whom he had been working at the time. In 1990, Bowie reflected: “I’d had very upsetting management problems and a lot of that was built into the song. I’ve left all that behind me, now… I think fame itself is not a rewarding thing. The most you can say is that it gets you a seat in restaurants.”

Music Fans On Bandcamp Raised More Than $1 Million For ACLU

0

Bandcamp held a fundraiser donating a share of sales to support the pro-immigrant and pro-refugee work of the American Civil Liberties. 400 independent labels and artists joined in, and indie music fans responded, spending more than $1 million, which is 550% more than a normal Friday (already their biggest sales day of the week). All of Bandcamp’s share of that (~12%) goes directly to the ACLU. The other 88% (less transaction fees) goes directly to the labels and artists, more than 400 of whom have pledged to donate their share of sales today as well. They joined a lot faster than the online retailing site could keep up, thanks to big releases from Anti-, ATO, Barsuk, City Slang, Epitaph, Father/Daughter, Fat Wreck, Kill Rock Stars, Merge Records, Mexican Summer, Miracle of Sound, Rhymesayers, RVNG, Sub Pop, Four Tet, Neil Gaiman, Lushlife, P.O.S., Speedy Ortiz, and all of the hundreds more.

You are all amazing.

I really like what a guy named Richard Rutherford had to say about this over on our Facebook post, and think it’s a great note to close on:

“The bands you like and the books you read and companies whose products you enjoy are all run by people who hold opinions on how the world should work and how other people should be treated. Some of them are going to make those views more specific than others, but everyone’s got their line-in-the-sand where they’re not going to be able to keep it to themselves any longer. In a world where everything is influenced by political decisions, ‘staying non-political’ actually means defaulting to the status-quo and endorsing what’s happening in the system – expecting people who sell you things to do that, no matter how harmful the system might be to them and things they care about, is unreasonable. This applies to you too, of course – you have every freedom to stop supporting Bandcamp and to explain why you don’t agree with them, but by doing so you are being just as ‘political’ as them – we all are, that’s the point. Pretending that you’re advocating some higher plane of art when you’re really just maintaining the status quo is dishonest and unhelpful. It’s not as if Bandcamp ever even pretended to be apolitical. Their entire business model is a reflection of their social and ethical convictions, which they happily explain every year when they publish their accounts.”
